[Q] Flagship vs. Value vs. Dreaming - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, everybody... I'm new here, but have been following the phone scene for months and its just killing me trying to decide what to do Currently i have a Samsung Intercept running android 2.2 that i've had over a year now. At the point when i bout that phone i had no knowledge of cell phones what so ever and was simply buying what i thought was decent and cheap. At that point i thought iPhone was king and that i was settling for android. Little did i know how wrong i was. Over my year with this phone despite it being low spec and very cheap i have come to love android and can't imagine giving in to the clutches of apple.
Short Version: I need to get a new phone very very soon. I can't decide between the flagships(and if i go flagships which one do i want) aka SGS3(US), HTC One X(US), SGS3(Int), HTC One X(Int), Sony Xperia S(ICS now), Sony Xperia Ion (wait for ICS update 1st), the best "values", Sony Xperia Arc S(ICS and $269 shipped), Motorola Droid Razr XT910 (no ICS yet and $419.99), Galaxy Nexus (about to get Jelly Bean, pure android(i greatly dislike skins) and $399), and then there's the dreaming aspect(meaning should i just continue holding out for what i really want), and what i really want is, vanilla android(ICS or newer), on screen keys, maxx size battery, S4 processor(or equivalent), 12+ mega pixel camera(or high quality lower pixel count as i know pixels isnt everything), HD screen, and a cool design. What do you all think other than i'm over thinking this whole deal? Thanks...
Long Detailed Version: Around May or April i started looking for phone replacement options. I had my heart set on a razr maxx and i was planning to switch to verizon(i was and currently am on virgin mobile). Then i went home from the Verizon store planning to order a raz maxx and switch with in the week when low and behold i mistakenly found a thread on the Razr HD. At that point the rumors were that'd it be out with in a month so i was going to wait for it. While waiting i continued researching every possible thing about current/future cellphones that i could. One thing that i found that i'm glad i did was the straight talk sim card program. My current plan is to get a micro sim from them asap, port my number and activate my service with them and then use that card with whatever phone i decide to purchase. The problem is i can't decide. Usually i hate to ask for advice on something as personal as deciding what phone is the best for that person but i am at my wits end after pondering the question for months. Needless to say, I need to get a new phone very very soon and I can't decide between the flagships(and if i go flagships which one do i want) aka SGS3(US), HTC One X(US), SGS3(Int), HTC One X(Int), Sony Xperia S(ICS now), Sony Xperia Ion (wait for ICS update 1st), the best "values", Sony Xperia Arc S(ICS and $269 shipped), Motorola Droid Razr XT910 (no ICS yet and $419.99), Galaxy Nexus (about to get Jelly Bean, pure android(i greatly dislike skins) and $399), and then there's the dreaming aspect(meaning should i just continue holding out for what i really want), and what i really want is, vanilla android(ICS or newer), on screen keys, maxx size battery, S4 processor(or equivalent), 12+ mega pixel camera(or high quality lower pixel count as i know pixels isnt everything), HD screen, and a cool design. I really dislike skins on android, but it looks like i might have to settle for one anyway. I tried a One X at my local ATT store and it wasnt horrendous but i still disliked the skins from an astic view(it looks ugly to me, i prefer simple and stream lined). I havent been able to try a SGS3 yet but from the videos i've seen the "nature based" touch wiz looks corny and annoying as well. I really would like on screen keys but all the manufacturers appear to be ignoring googles design ques with the exception of Asus but by the time the padfone gets to the US it'll be long outdated and on top of that very expensive for what it is. I almost just want to get an Arc S(cheap, ICS, looks cool, but rather low specs) to hold me over and be done with it until something i truly love comes along. If i could find a way to get a Sony Xperia GX over here that'd due but that's not going to happen so what to do, what to do... What do you all think other than i'm over thinking this whole deal? Thanks...
For reference here are the models in question:
Flagships-
SGS3(US)
SGS3(Int)
HTC One X(US)
HTC One X(Int)
Sony Xperia S(Int)
Sony Xperia Ion(US)
Values-
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S(US)
Motorola Droid Razr XT910(Int)
Google Galaxy Nexus by Samsung(US)
Dreams-
Motorola Droid Razr HD
Motorola Atrix 3
Sony Xperia GX
And just FYI i had links to the specs/price on all of theses phone but was unable to post my thread with them due to being a new member, however i saved the links and will post after i reach 10 posts.

While, i've yet to get any feedback i believe i've narrowed my choices considerably. I feel rather ignorant actually that in 2+ months of research i did, i didn't come across someone explaining launchers and locker widgets. It never ceases to amaze me how the more you find out, the more you realize you don't know. Needless to say last night i did see a video explaining app based launchers and locker widgets, so now i don't think it really matters if it has sense or touchwiz. I'll just use a launcher app such as nova launcher to get vanilla ICS on it along with a locker widget to get the stock ICS lock screen. I know a few things such as the main settings and the notification bar will remain unaltered by a new launcher but that won't bother me at all i don't think. Anyway... I went ahead and ordered a straight talk microSIM last night and it should be here in three days. I decided against getting something "old" and cheap, and i'm sick of just sitting around "dreaming" about my perfect device so it looks like it'll either be the SGS3 or the HTC One X for me. The current question being, which one of these is the best, and then which one is the best of each device as in should i get the US version or the international version? I like the way the SGS3 looks the best(because i don't like the matte finish on the HTC) but i like that the HTC is available right now for a cheaper price then the SGS3 until the US varient hits ATT stores. That being said the US and INT version of the HTC are about the same price and the INT has 32gb of internal storage so i think if i go HTC ill get the INT version along with the coolness factor because i like to have different stuff then the average person has and i can almost guarantee no body in my area has an INT phone. What do you all think? Thanks in advance :good:
Afterthought: I was just on amazon and see they brought their price down on the SGS3 pre-order to $549 like it should be so now the question is, should i get an INT HTC One X right now or pre-order a US SGS3. Decisions decisions...

[OPINION] Xperia Users who are considering Samsung Galaxy S3

Hi Guys,
I have used Xperia X10, Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia S and I am finding it really difficult to think about another brand !!!
I just want to know the opinion of Xperia users (Xperia S/Arc S), do you guys thinking about moving to Samsung Galaxy S3?
Actually I have used Xperia S for a short time & returned the set due to:
1. Built Issues - lower part (below the transparent strip) was very loose, the phone looks very fragile, once dropped, its gonne (i hate using cases)
2. No Physical Button - I really missed the physical button (I know its personal choice), galaxy S3 has one single button.
3. Still lagging - the phone still lags, Xperia promoted this too much but I can still lag while switching screens.
4. Camera is not so good - I find my 8MP cam of Xperia Arc far better than XS.
5. Everybody hates the flip covers - common problem.
Regarding Galaxy S3 - I know its not beautiful design but it has got power, I have Galaxy Note and I know its a beast.
Note: I just need opinions so no arguments or word wars please
i never thought of samsung, moreover iproducts are costly.
And main thing is i don't have any problem with my xperia s currently and i am happy with it.
Not the galaxy s3. If the problems I have with the xs are not solved I would consider the one x.
Wouldn't think of it.
My reasons in a nutshell:
Too ugly (blah design), bad screen (pentile so not true HD), not much of an upgrade (more cores isnt always better).
by the way, there was already an opinion thread on the S3 made, and it got closed because it went a bit....south I guess.
you can see more opinions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1637191
and I hope this thread won't turn out like the last one, but yea...
I want powerful phone this time, dont want to buy n to make my phone wrking better by rooting !!!
It should run smooth...
I am waiting for SG3 & XGX.
I really liked the smoothness of HTC One X !!!
Good option.
from xperia PLAY
Well if you want power above all, the One X or the SGS3 wouldn't be a bad option.
I don't know if it's still a problem though, but the One X was a battery vampire I hear.
I myself have thought about a Razr (not easily available here) or HTC phone (One S) before moving over to the S. I don't really like sense though, but the design of HTC devices never hit the spot, so picked the S in the end.
I don't know how you will be lag-wise, as android itself has a sort of lag by design. You may have returned your device within 15min I read, but you didn't really give it enough time to win your heart. It is a powerful device without even needing to do anything to it.
But yes, for benchmarks above all, those two devices would be the best option currently. Or you can wait for the Mint to release and not have a brand dilemma at all . For actual daily use, I am not sure you will see a difference, as the S is already mostly butter smooth and has the design factor as well.
My reason was this..
PURCHASED XPERIA S and RETURNED within 15 minutes !!!
Guys,
Today I make up my mind n decided to purchase xperia S, enough waiting for GX/Hayabusa..
But once purchased, while playing with it, I found that the lower part of the XS (below the transparent strip) is loose, I can move that part n looks pathetic
I went to the store, he exchanged immediately with another one, that too was not looking very solid !!!
Its just me unluckily or luckily saw that or its design/built issue

Your luck, probably early batch. 12w11 here, the build is rock solid, even port flaps.
Same here. No build Quality issues at all. Mine is 12W16.
The port flaps also seem well built. As for lag, I don't think GS3 would be noticeably smoother in daily usage than XS. XS is already almost on par with Galaxy Nexus and Htc One X in terms of real life usage even with Gingerbread.
ICS update should make things even smoother.
As for the GS3, nope I won't buy a Samsung phone ever. The GS3 design is a joke and its too big for my taste. Plus has an inferior camera, and a much less sharp screen with over saturated colors. No thanks
These no. 12w11, 12w16 are written on back right? After removing the back case???
Or is there any way to identify the batch seeing the Box itself!!

Mate are you serious? Haven't we already had a thread like this that got kicked to the bottom of the forum?
Found here THREAD CLOSED
Again this is for the General discussion thread not for the Xperia S forum.
Not starting a flame war, just stating fact via my opinion.

Im staying with my XS.
Main reson is the design that looks like no other mobile out there.
And i a everyday use, i dont think ill notice the difference in dual vs. quad power.
The screen size is allso a problem for SIII. Its not the size of the boat, its the motion of the ocean thats important.
We've been through all this before!!

[Q] New phone now or wait?

Hey guys I'm looking for a job at the moment to hopefully get enough cash for a new Android phone, and I should have enough money in about a month's time. I have the HTC One S right now and I'm just not happy with the screen size and the build quality. I'd like to go into more detail about my current phone but I want to keep this as short and sweet as possible. I'm not happy with the fact that I HAVE to use a case in order to keep my phone from shattering if I drop it, so I want a cheaper construction. I also am quite disappointed in the screen size and pixel density, for trying to compete with the SGSIII on T-Mobile, a 720p screen should be a minimum specification. I don't have to try at all to see pixels on my screen, and after seeing the Nexus 4 at a local T-Mobile store, I was quite jealous. So basically what I'm getting at is that I can't get the new phone just yet, but if I land this job within the next week, I should have it by mid march or near the end, so I want to know which phone I should get that won't be outdated by the end of March, has a large screen and is on T-Mo of course, or if I should even get one at all right now, or just wait until a brand new one comes out this summer or something. Let me know what you guys think and I'll be sure to consider your advice, thanks so much for reading ! :fingers-crossed:

Wait for some time about march-april or maybe June as all major companies are releasing their new mobile flagship in this period
Samsung - Galaxy S4 and Note 3
HTC - HTC ONE
Sony - Xperia Z
L.G.- L.G Optimus G Pro
all of these will have full HD screen i.e 1920*1080
Samsung specs are still not released but
Sony Xperia Z specs... http://m.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z-5204.php
HTC One specs.... http://m.gsmarena.com/htc_one-5313.php
L.G Optimus G Pro specs...... http://m.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_g_pro-5254.php
Well all of these would be Best of their Kinds
But u should wait for Samsung as they always come with Best....
Xperia Z has shatter proof screen... Also it is in rumours that Galaxy S4 will have unbreakable screen that means
No need of case type things.... good luck...
Thanks for the replies, however I just discovered that I basically have no choice but to get a Nexus 4, (which is amazing don't get me wrong) because I really don't want to save up $600 to $700 for a carrier phone, plus I hate hate hate hate hate hate having carrier branding on the front and back of my device. I don't want T-Mobile, the company that takes my money every month to be engraved on my phone... So thanks again for the advice but I think I'll be going with the Nexus 4. I guess I'll just purchase a 3rd party made bumper for it when it comes in the mail
Buy an otterbox from their website. Not sure if you can but you can get one for the n7.

Why do we all keep changing phones ??

Over the last few years I have owned the following phones:
Sony Xperia X10
HTC Desire HD
HTC Sensation
Samsung Galaxy SII
Sony Xperia S
Sony Xperia V
And now I have hat the HTC One X+ since November or December...
And I do actually still have all of them inclusive a few smaller android phones also...
Looking back, there is really not much changed from my Sony Xperia X10, and to today...
(at least when we talk about daily use)
At the moment I find my self in love with the new Sony Xperia Z...:-S
I am confused...
My wife have just about the same track record and also want the Xperia Z now...:-S
So why do we all keep using our hard earned money, when specs really don't change that much from one model to the next...??

For me it's a combo of the media and a desire to have the latest and greatest.
My previous phone, which I still use regularly as a work phone, was the Motorola Atrix. It was a beast of a phone and combing it with a lapdock made it a blast to use. But, when my gf upgraded her phone from a Samsung Focus to the SGIII, I felt dated, like my Atrix with its smaller screen, older processors, and older OS was insufficient. So to erase that feeling I purchased the HOX+.
The reason I selected this phone was because of the commercial HTC was running with the business man and the voice over guy who was boasting the phone's upgraded specs. I found the commercial to be very clean and crisp which led me to believe their phone would be as such. I've also had good experience in the past with HTC having owned the Tilt and Tilt II.

It's something I've never understood either, because the majority of folk (me included) will never use them to their full potential....some just feel the need to have the latest, infact when I got this one (One x Plus) about a week after I had I though, just what the hell do I need this for
For me it's definitely about wanting the latest and greatest. And also i usually MAKE money after upgrading. Every year I get a partial upgrade which costs me ~200$ for the newest phone, then I flip my old phone, which is usually only about a year old, on eBay for 250-400$. So in the end a make a few dollar AND have the latest. To me it seems foolish not to upgrade. I "need" a cell phone anyway, so extending my contract doesn't bother me, especially since contracts seem to be getting crappier. My current contract is better then anything AT&T is offering now.
I'm kind of the opposite. My first Android phone was the OG and I had that through my entire contract. The advances made in smartphone tech in the two years after the OG was introduced was substantial. Next I got the GNex when it first came out. I would have actually kept it but my new employer offered to provide me with a phone and pay the bill so it would have been dumb for me to stick with Verizon and the GNex just to stick with a phone that I'm entirely happy with.
And now here I sit with the HOX+. Have to say I'm more impressed with HTC's build than I was with the Samsung.

Farewell HOX+ Friends

I've been using my HOX+ since early January and in general (aside from broken screen) it's been an awesome phone, definitely one of my favorite Android phones to date. With that said though, as I mentioned in another post, Sense has been getting on my nerves after playing around with my dad's new Xperia TL. So, I made the [big] mistake of walking into the local Sony store and infront of me was an Xperia ZL. Needless to say, I fill in love with it.
A couple of days later I had my HOX+ sold and sporting a new Xperia ZL.
The top reasons the Xperia ZL won me over:
- Gorgeous 5 inch 1080p display within the exact same footprint as the HOX+
- Beautifully minimalistic skin that's UBER speedy
- Multi-colored notification LED (sorely missed since my GNex)
- Power button is positioned optimally for easy and quick access
- Dedicated camera button is sweet
- AOSP support (Cyanogenmod already available)
- Google Wallet works (with minor hack) / never could get it to work on HOX+
- Typing (on any keyboard) is much, much smoother
- Wifi reception is like night and day / 5Ghz actually works for me
- Google Voice fully integrated / VM shows up and plays in Contacts app
- Stock battery percentage by default
- Love the contacts application / HATED the Sense contacts app
- Love the hi-res full screen contact picture on incoming calls
- Battery - still testing it out, but so far I see huge difference in battery discharge rate
- Stock Android News & Weather widget...again another sorely missed app from Stock Android
- Obviously a speedier CPU and double the RAM is awesome, but honestly those weren't a deciding factor (because you'll keep chasing new numbers all year long).
Grateful for all the help I got while I was an HOX+ member. Cheers guys.
Can't blame you. I'm debating whether I should sell the X+ now for the S4 or bear with it until the fall.

Same thing here, it just I don't feel that the new devices in the market now offers a wow factor for me to buy but for sure no more HTC for me till they get their things together.. Thinking about the s4 but it's no big of difference from the s3 (which I own along side the hox+) except the 1080p...

I'm tempted to do the same. I don't think HTC realize how many more devices they could sell by being more dev friendly and releasing AOSP compatible drivers. This was my first Android phone and I was hoping for so much more. I guess it just didn't really become as popular as it could have been, which is surprising for a "flagship" HTC handset (which it was when it first came out). My next phone will most likely have Nexus written on it.

Hmmmm, I am starting to hate HTC a bit now. Their S-ON policies and closed-sourceness! Look at Sammy phones for example. Unlock and done. I admit, I am tempted to buy a Sony phone now

It gets hot, that's true (and kinda strange.... )
The camera isn't that bad (and absolutely enough for the use you're gonna do of it, e.g. posting photos on FB)
If you are looking for similar sized phones you can consider the GSIII Mini, considering the fact that it hasn't got Sense customization, and for a HTC user it can be kinda disappointing (I used to have a Wildfire S, when I bought a Xperia go I was so disappointed of sony customized UI that I replaced it with the Desire X)
Just a thing... please improve your english..

I'd recommend it if you can get it for £180.
However if you're willing to go for a few quid extra I'd go for the GSIII Mini or a little bit more than that you could get a Nexus 4...
As Matyt said, the device gets hot and it gets pretty annoying and unpleasant.
We have received updates for this device, and most users now have a Jelly Bean update.
Moreover our device gets the Linux 3.4 kernel with Jelly Bean meaning we'll be able to run the next few releases of Android on our phone whether it's officially or unofficially.
We have lots of progress on the AOSP ROMs front as well, with CM9 almost fully working and CM10.1 in the works.
In terms of developer support, you can't go wrong with the DX
Thanks for your advice im geting more tempted to get the desire x now do you think there is a way to fix the overheating and do yuou think this could shorten its life?
once i again....
if you dont have too much money and want a nice - cool , fast phone...not in a shoe size...you better buy it!!!!
it gets hot but not in critical points....
for the money you will pay you will get a very good phone
and lately a lot of developers are working on our phone...so we will get jb roms aosp and others..which will make our phone twice faster
from what you ask...this phone suits you!! A LOTTT

thanks for all your help nice to see a bunch of friendy guys who know what there talking about who can give real advice
mine doesnt over heat until i play an intense 3d game. and that happens to all the midrange phones i know of. Its only major compromise is on:
- no front camera
- no digital compass
- no 720p video recording (although playback is possible)
But dont forget the positive things:
- fast processor
- Good camera lens and low light snapshots
- HTC Sense (although lite version)
- Ram is higher
- Screen colour reproduciton is v good. (although not very bright)
- HTC Sense
- JellyBean (Upcoming in some regions - Damn you HTC)
- Light and beautiful design.
I agree with neXus PRIME. I havent had the issue of the phone overheating.
The phone is absolutely amazing in my honest opinion. Except for the front camera and htc full sense. Although i would advice you to check this link regarding the white noise (hiss sound) on some of our Desire X.
But that has never annoyed me at all as i barely noticed it. And after some search on Google, the white noise seems to be a problem or some kind of sacrifice introduced on almost all mobile devices to compensate and even out other weird sounds. I think there is a video regarding this which is on one of the pages on that link thread.
There is nothing else to disregard Desire X as an awesome and handy and comfortable device for those of us keen on getting a quality phone within a budget.
And once again if you want to compensate for all the con points neXus PRIME has first mentioned in the above thread, then by all means buy a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini.
I have come from a Wildfire to the Desire x.
The perfect move.
The DX camera is 10x netter than the Wildfire
I am glad i Made the move.

It important that you are 100% happy with your purchase...my advice go with your heart.
the Desire X is a nice phone has everything that you need and will receive updates for at least 4.X(not sure about official but surely unofficially).
about the heating that can usually happen due to prolonged usage at high frequency of the processor(our default governor is performance hence the reason slow down scaling and rapid fire upscaling).
this can be fixed by moving to interactive governor(better ratio of scaling) or/and changing the scaling governor to conservative.
though this problem might persist if you play games/use apps that have a high processor demand(usually very graphic intensive).
there so my suggestion is to look for a device that has the following points.
1.confirmed jb update(this gives it a better chance of getting 4.x future updates).
2.Strong developer comunity.
3.possible working method for rooting.
4.custom recoveries.
5.good specs vs price ratio.
for me the Desire X ticks all these boxes.
but in the end the choice is yours.
Good Luck,
Dark Passenger
The phone is far better with the JB update, from my own anecdotal experience. I was unhappy with it on ICS. I'm still not impressed with Sense Lite that we were burdend with, and had I known about it at the time I would have opted for another device.
There are many positives about the phone, it is very cheap and it works OK for the price. If I had more money I would go for a Nexus 4 though.
The other reviews above are good, but I'd add in the actual handset is not very comfortable in your hands, especially for extended periods, and the screen feels less responsive than the one on the old Desire (Bravo). It is very plasticy and the back cover feels very cheapo and fragile.
It's a grand Android phone, it costs next to nothing (comparatively) but the performance is fairly low end and there's an air of cheapness to the whole thing. My Nexus 4, GS3 and other devices feel far superior (though to be fair they are). My One X JB update slowed down some fairly basic functionality for me and I really didn't like it after it updated. I've a concern that HTC are rushing software or it is too fragmented for them to release solid ROMs for their devices.
I use the DX as my day to day out and about phone and it works fine for the most part. There's nothign major wrong with it, just a lot of little niggles here and there. Some of which were fixed with JB update!
If you want a very cheap phone for basic surfing, facebook etc and won't be installing any particularly big games you'll be fine with this device.
I went to get the desire X on sataday and was told by the shop that they do not keep them in stock as they are such a bad phone that they nobody wanted them but from what you guys said it sounds like hes talking out of his ass

NEVER trust retailers...
i never do i sent a nice email to there head office saying how there staff ignored evreyone in the shop untill they all waked out then when i came back an hr later the palce was empty and then was told its a rubish phone but you guys on here seem to be loving the thing so im just looking for somewhere elce to buy it from but there isnt any other place i can find that sells it so i may have to bite the bullet and buy it from them
Personally, i hate the phone. I regret buying it everyday. Hell, even my old Galaxy S was a lot better then this piece of crap. Don't recommend buying it.
I find it Amazing that some people take so much effort and time to come onto a forum and talk rubbish.
You can go onto virtually any forum, IPHONE, Galaxy 3 and 4 forums, you will always get people there with problems, mostly user related.
You also get the chops who also go onto the various forums and say this phone is the biggest rubbish just for the kick of it.
To the one who bought this product, surely you dont compare it to Top of the range Galaxy, Sony or Iphone.
Compare apples with apples.
The Desire X fits into its own market, It delivers just what is expected of it . Accept that or buy another phone that will suit your needs.

'Delivers what is expected of it' Yeah because when we spend $300 on a phone we all expect a software update that will break one of the phone's main selling points.

This is not, hate desire x forum. I like dislike a lot of things. But this phone ISN'T crap. I've tested many equally costing devices from others and they can be called crap. Let us all stay on topic. Our frustration with jelly bean update n bugs shouldn't make us so narrow minded so as to neglect all the good things about it.
Peace.
