Hi all,
I have an Evo 3D GSM phone
Hboot 1.49.0018
LOCKED
PVT SHIP S-ON
Cid HTC__102
Software version: 1.20.401.8
Now I want to update it to ICS. And as a post by Anryl, I should not use OTA method as it would upgrade my Hboot to version 1.5.x, which will not allow me do any further tweak. What he suggested is to install the ICS update via CWM.
Now the problem begins. I could not find a way to install CWM. There are many tutorials out there in this forum. One says do this, another one tells you to do that. For someone like me, who with his first ever HTC phone, would be confused. Which way should I follow?
As per my reading until now, the easiest way for me now is:
Step 1. Downgrade my Hboot to 1.47.0007 following Flashmaniac's guide.
Step 2. S-off using revolutionary.io's tool.
Step 3. Install CWM as instructed on revolutionary.io
Step 4. Follow Anryl's guide to upgrade to the official ICS while Hboot stays at 1.49.0007 and CWM untouched.
Step 5. Enjoy my Evo 3d with ICS.
Step 6. In the future, if I want to install any custom ROM, just go to CWM and install.
Please help me confirm it will work, and help tell me if I was wrong.
Thanks a lot.

Hi,
yes, that is exactly my way I did it 6 months ago.
Downgrade HBOOT, use revolutionary (s-off and cwm will be installed), after that you can use all custom roms here in the community to run.
It sounds confusing, but after the first time it is simple

I seem to be in an unusual state with my phone. I downgraded to hboot 1.4 with the software downgrade method, but I can't seem to get root or s-off now. I've tried revolutionary, and it says failed to get root (as I'd expect since I don't think it was made for 2.17) and I found and ran ControlBear, and it says I need root (I think ControlBear is for the wire s-off though). I can't seem to find any steps here though, and would appreciate any advice on where to go now. What step am I missing? I want to get root, and clockwork so I can install a custom rom or two.
Or would this belong in the Q&A thread?

you have to be htc unlocked with a stock rooted rom to run controlbear
But, I have hboot 1.4, would I be able to downgrade to 2.08?

Yes I think, when I followed unknownforce's guide to downgrade there was a step to run the 1.13 RUU.EXE ( version b4 2.08) and then use revolutionary...so the phone will have hboot 1.4 and software vertion 1.13....
So my needs was to install GB instead of ICS which my evo 3d got in official way from HTC. After one week of reading and trying different ways with no success I did it just a few minutes ago. I know my task it very rare, but it must be posted and here is the steps.
Situation: EVO 3D GSM with official ICS, hboot 1.53 S-ON and CID HTC__E11
Goal: have GB on it instead of ICS
1. S-OFF your hboot 1.53 using method D described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28131331
Note. Don't worry if it will not work from the first time even after 10 times. Just keep trying and it will work
2. Now you have S-OFF and able to install custom ROMs, but you can't install GB because it needs hboot 1.49. It is possible to downgrade hboot with these simple tools created by Flashmaniac:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22494488&postcount=1
But it requires GB and not works on ICS!
So here is the trick: you need to install GB with hboot 1.53 and make your device boot loop. Yes, boot loop it for always. Install LeeDrOiD, as I like it more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245424
After installing you'll have your phone boot loop and this is what we need.
3. Now you're able to run Flashmaniac' tools, because GB is installed (even can't be load)!!! Go through all that steps described by Flashmaniac and finally you'll have hboot 1.49 and S-OFF
4. Now you are able to install LeeDrOiD GB, just install it once again from SD card and it will work well for now. DONE!
Thanks for this i was also considering going to S-Off and very good of you to post such nice guide.
Very High Quality of you.
Thanks again. :good:
Now I have my "new" hboot . Although Flashmaniac tool dont run exactly, but ... worked
Can confirm, that it works
Can i downgrade without HTC dev unlock? I can not unlock it because of new motherboard
Very nice tipp.
When you proceed to added E step, and after you download PG86IMG.zip and flash it in bootloader it will automatically install HBOOT 1.49.0007 and GB 2.3.4, really nice work. :good::good::good:

I did everything, except flashed other GB ROM then LeeDroid. Had bootloop and all that s****. Though I do not understand if I have to execute Flashmaniac`s tool while bootlooping or while in bootloader/Fastboot USB?
Thanks
Thanks
Hey! A while ago I rooted my phone using the revolutionary method. Later I reverted back to stock and locked the bootloader. However the S-OFF remained. A few minutes ago I had 1.53 HBOOT and ICS stock. But now I got HBOOT 1.49.0007 and I wanna use revolutionary tool to unlock bootloader yet again. But now it gives me an error saying, "Failed to get root! "
Is there another way to get rooted WITHOUT using the HTC method since I already got S-OFF and 1.49.0007 HBOOT? I don't feel comfortable using HTC's method....

I think the "Failed to get root!" message is because HTC patched the tacoroot exploit in the ICS builds that was being used for temp root with the GB builds.
Why do you want to unlock the bootloader? If you want to run the additional fastboot commands you should be able to just flash the JBear version of the current bootloader, or does that cause problems on the GSM model?
ramjet73
Since you are S-OFF you can flash whatever bootloader you want. I don't know revolutionary method, I was using jbear to get S-OFF. After S-OFF i flashed RUU and I was on stock 1.53.007 locked bootloader with S-OFF and i couldn't root my phone. I've flashed hboot from this site:
http://unlimited.io/jbhboots.htm
There you have 2 versions of GSM Evo 3d hboots. After that you can do everything with your phone. Good luck!

I contacted unlimited.io's support in the IRC and downloaded the ICS HBOOT - 1.53.5353 and flashed that. Now it seemes to work!
Anyway, thanks for your answer! If they wouldn't have responded then you would have been my savior!
Okay, problem number two.... I have flashed CWM now and I installed Super User inside recovery mode but I don't get root access? I downloaded the signed package from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991929
Any ideas?
I have tried to repair premissions after the install of Super User. I have also updates Super User from Market after Install due to force close after the fresh install from CWM

Follow method B (steps 1 to 14 if you want to be on rooted stock) and it should be ok. If I remember correctly, there is a 4ext recovery to download, maybe try this one. Good luck!
I used HTCdev to unlock the bootloader, to root it, and i have installed TWRP 2.3.3 recovery. I have HBOOT 2.09 right now too. I am currently running MeanBean 3.0 right now as my ROM. I am currently S-ON and want to know the proper way to go about S-OFF so i can flash the 3.16 firmware and update my radios and pri. What would be the correct steps now to S-OFF so I can do this?
The system requirements, necessary packages, and instructions are listed on the unlimited io website
Just follow these instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964309

Thank you!
i want to make my evo s-off but i cant. i'm on yodas ics rom. so i do it by wiretrick. my hboot ver. is: 1.53.0007. i cant downgrade it please help.
Start by reading the instructions more carefully. the wire trick only works on stock RUU, you should have read that on the website when you downloaded joupunbear. Then it will work

ok so what should i do ? i cant do wire trick. i tried to downgrade hboot with hex editor but when i open .img there are only 00000... no more values. now what to do ?
You must flash the RUU for your phone and carrier in order to even get started with the wire trick. To be safe, that is. So go ahead and grab you the stock RUU and then flash it. Once you're done, you can get started by following the instructions given on Juno's site.
Harmonia
Harmonia ROM working for me.
Since you are s-on do 'fastboot oem lock'. Then run the ruu (it must be ics) and follow the onscreen instructions, all ruus are there -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906172. Then s-on with htcdev, flash recovery, do a backup, s-off with wiretrick (go to unlimited.io, all the required files and a guide is there) and finally downgrade hboot -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1906172 and I recommend to flash 4ext touch recovery since I have never had any problems with it. After hboot downgrade go into recovery and wipe all partitions except sdcard. Flash the rom. You're done.
See this thread for hboot downgrade
