[Q] Email Client Question - Downloading Mail - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

When I use the stock mail app, or k9, for my pop account I get the mail just fine. However when I download the mail on my desktop the mail on my phone disappears. I'd like it to stay on my phone. I have turned sync off for that account and leaving the mail on server is not an option. Is there a setting I am missing to tell it to retain a local copy on my phone or is this just not supported?
I feel a bit stupid not finding it ;-) anyone help out?

Sounds like it might be your desktop mail application that is taking it off the server, not your phone. Have you changed your desktop mail app at all? I'd double check its settings, and make sure under the advanced, or account options on your desktop mail client, that don't delete from server, or the such is checked.

My desktop app does indeed download it off the server. I wanted to see if there was a way to keep the copy on my phone even when this happens. I was hoping turning off sync would do this. I had this ability on the iphone, so just looking for something similar.

[Q] Recomended email app

Anyone recommend a "one size fit all email app" like the iphone, for Att S2?
I'm using Exchange, yahoo, gmail. I have lots of folder in my exchange mail and the stock Mail is sux.
Moxier mail is good but only have 1 email acc. I need an app that can put all mails in one place and showing folders instead of coupel apps for emails.
Thanks
I use Gmail for all of my accounts. I set Gmail up to retrieve (pop) mail from my Yahoo account and my other email address forwards to Gmail. I have labels set up, which allows me to organize it. I've been doing this for a while and it works really well.
What about Exchange, all folder will show or i have to go settings and choose specific folder to view? it's a pain in the bu.. . I really like the way iphone's emails handle.

I've never used Exchange, but if you were able to successfully configure it for pop retrieval, it'd work just as your other email addresses, in terms of how you view them (outlined below). Otherwise, perhaps forwarding is an option. For the email address I have forwarding, I set up filters (scans incoming emails for defined rules) to apply labels (e.g., when the sender or recipient is ______, apply this label). It's something you'd have to toy around with, but I've gotten mine set up pretty well.
All emails would show in your Gmail account inbox (with labels on each one, if you've done this) and you have the ability to specifically select a label to only see mail with that label. This is something you can do online or on your device via the Gmail app (viewing individual labels). I've tried just about every email client and I've found that this method is what works best for me.
Good luck.

I was set up like this as well for quite some time - and it worked well. Recently switched to using maildroid, which I like, but haven't customized to get more functionality than I had with gMail yet...
What's wrong with the stock mail client? Seems really nice to me. Should support all of those account types and you can switch folders very easily.

Back in my Captivate days, I found the stock email client to be unreliable. Ever since then, I've been avoiding it.

The problem is with stock email. My folders didn't go in order some + subfolders.... Moxier mail gives exactly the folder in order like the outlook also display the number for new email....like the MS Outlook in computer.
I just reinstalled Moxier mail and use stock mail for yahoo, gmail also. Oh well, no choice

Touchdown is a pretty good one, but you have to pay for it.
I used to use enhanced email on my cappy

The stock email client is very nice and seems to work very well with Exchange. From what I've seen so far:
1) Tasks will sync
2) Folders are supported, much nicer and easier than with the Captivate
3) Flags are supported
4) Various display options such as first line preview, threaded emails, etc
5) Out of Office settings can be made from phone.
6) You can search emails on the server, not just those on your phone
7) In landscape it'll do a preview pane on the right-hand side. Not bad.
Try it, you've got nothing to lose. Seems pretty nice so far. The only thing I am missing is the ability to "check" multiple emails and take an action on a group of them (e.g., delete them all). You need to do it one-by-one. But so far it works well.
Anybody know if the stock email client can be set up for "push only" so it doesn't poll every x minutes for new mail?
Another vote for enhanced email. You can bypass exchange security rules

Enhanced Email is what youre looking for. I'm a huge Exchange user and this program easily integrates and works just like it does on iphone. You can choose which folders to keep in sync and it will notify you whenever a new message arrives in sub-folders.
The only problem I have with the stock email app is that you can't "Select All" and delete. That capability, and the ability to forward emails by clicking on several contacts and adding them , as the stock program does, are two features I really like; however, I can't find an email program that has both capabilities.

I installed Enhance email. However, it looks alike stock mail (may be I haven't explorer it much). I do like Moxier mail because it's giving me the interface just like Outlook (folder is in order same as my work laptop). Unfortunately, Moxier mail only have 1 account. Wish i can add other acc then it should be PERFECT

[Q] Email - POP3 Server Issue (Deleting from Server)

Hi. Is there a known glitch with the Android Email App where it takes emails off the server when in POP3 configuration, even when you have the "Don't Delete From Server" option on "Never"? I'm experiencing this problem. Is there a fix?
Thanks,
-Adam
IIRC "Don't delete from server" is a traditional client config setting that controls whether or not the email is deleted at the time it is polled by the POP client. It does not necessarily control whether or not the client later reaches out and tells the server to delete an arbitary message, and I think this ambiguity is the issue.
My guess is Android is deleting the message from the server when it's deleted from the phone. See the last few posts here.
The workaround I see folks using is to set the "last N days" setting low and letting them fall off the phone's view rather than deleting them.
I haven't used POPn in a while so input welcomed from more knowledgeable folks.

It takes an email off the server as soon as one's delivered (into the inbox). I'll check out the link. Thanks.

I just read through the link. I took the advice of setting up the email client on my computer to leave mail on the server, but it still gets removed when I receive it on my phone.. maybe it's time to call T-Mobile.
But the desktop client leaves it on the server? If so, sounds like an Android problem and I figure TMO will be useless. Hopefully someone else jumps in to clue us in. I don't have a pop+webmail account handy to use for testing (and I'm running CM7).
Are you running the stock T-mobile ROM that came with the phone? Would it be acceptable to try some other (free) POP3 client from the android market?

When I receive the email on my desktop, I can't get it on my phone.. even though I have it set to keep the messages on the server. This is weird!
I know that POP3 is kind of outdated and IMAP is the new popular standard. I'd switch it over to IMAP, but I don't like how when I delete messages from the Inbox, they reappear the next time I check my email.

Yeah, I'm running the stock ROM. What POP3 Client would you recommend from the market?
Thanks,

Actually, I think the weirdness is on the server, since the desktop client won't leave them there either. If you share who the mail provider is someone might chime in with info or a fix.
Dunno any 3rd party pop3 apps, as I don't use them.

Email Sync/Push question

So there are two email apps in the S3, Gmail and what appears to be the stock Samsung email client.
in order to use Gmail (push) it seems you have to keep "Sync" enabled in the options. the question is, is enabling this consumes battery by constantly polling/syncing, or is this Sync another name for Push (as in server notifies device rather than the device polling)?
I am trying to figure out what is the best way to setup push. using the Samsung email app, it appears to be true push without the need to have "Sync" on the device enabled.
the gmail app is the closest thing to "push" for all non-exchange email clients.
so i'd say if you use gmail and not exchange - use the app
both email clients can be configured for push, but gmail requires "sync" option enabled on the phone. the samsung email client doesn't require Sync to be enabled for push email..
i think i will stick with samsung email client.. seems better for push email without having to enable Sync (which might use more battery).
thanks guys
helped me also!
Guys, if you know what you are saying here, you have the solution I'm looking for since I got the S3.
The samsung galaxy s3 email client has no push option, at least I haven't found it. It used to have it in the S2. So enlight me please, how do you push gmail, yahoo, etc on samsung email?

someone posted this on another forum:
I am writing this because I want to help all these people who want to have push email when using the stock Email application on Galaxy S3 and other Android phones. I used to have a Blackberry and I find it extremely easy to use the push email option.
It is really extremely easy. This is the step-by-step process:
1. Go to phone Settings.
2. Go to Accounts and Synch.
3. Select Add Account.
4. On the screen that shows up, select Email.
5. On the next screen write your email account (eg. [email protected]) and
your password.
6. Click on Manual Setup (DO NOT CLICK ON NEXT).
7. On the next screen choose Microsoft Exchange Active Synch (yes, this is the correct one, do not be surprized!).
8. On the field Domain\user name, make sure that you have your complete email address, preceded by a \ (ie. \[email protected]).
9. Your password should also be entered (it is done automatically, but if it
is not, add it yourself).
10. In the field Echange Server use m.google.com (check with other email providers what you shoud use - I use a gmail based email service so I can not help you here, but I am sure that it is easy to find out).
11. Check Use Secure Connection and uncheck Use Client Certificate.
12. Click Next and OK if an information box pops up.
13. Change the Account options as desired and click Next.
You are all set. It works like a charm for Gmail accounts, you should make sure it works also for other services / email providers.
Good luck!

I personally use yahoo, and I still haven't found a way to make it work yet. But, gmail, according to what I've read so far, it should work just fine.
I already gave a try to the method above. It works, bute it has a few drawbacks:
1. It uses more data, more battery, more awake time than the push email client on the S2.
2. It works only for gmail, not yahoo. Because yahoo is greedy and wants money for an Exchange feature.

Best Outlook app out there

Hello,
I am looking for an app that can synchronize my work mail (I access it on my PC with MS Outlook). Please tell me the name of a software that can at least do that, if not access calendars, schedules, etc.
Thanks in advance
If you even tried to setup the stock mail app it asks you for type of account. Select Exchange and enter your info. If it doesn't work your server needs to be setup to allow mobile active sync. Also depending on the policy on your server you might need to pin lock and encrypt.

K9-Mail has the option of working with Exchange accounts, and I believe it's the best mail app. Maildroid is another option, but you'll have to pay a fair bit to get access to all of its features.

Hotmail Folders

Hi,
I have a Hotmail account and wandering if there's any way to get my other folders to sync same as inbox? On the stock email app for my Mate 10 pro I can't even add the folders and Gmail lets me add them but can't get them to sync like inbox (have to manually refresh).
Sounds minor but bugs the hell out of me, there must be a way without using a 3rd party app?
Cheers in advance.
Use the Outlook app from the Playstore. It really uses push notifications and not "check every 30 minutes" or something like that.
Hi,
I have 3 hotmails accounts synchronized on the stock app of my mate 10 pro with multiple folders.
You can select the folders you want to synchronize in the stock app (sorry, my phone is set in French): go to the three dots at the bottom of the app - parameters - select your Hotmail account - folders synchronization
Here you can select by folders how you want to sync them.
Hope this helps
PS : automatic push (real time notification) is working without any issue on the stock app.
Hi @freedamdam, thanks for your reply.
I don't have that option, do you definitely use stock email app? I have the normal folder screen on left showing inbox, sent, drafts, recycle bin, etc best t not my personally created folders? The 3 dots takes me into settings but nothing in there re folders.
Also, when you set up your Hotmail did you select Hotmail or use Microsoft exchange or other? Not sure if makes difference? Just don't understand why you can't view your folders!
Thanks
Wayne
Yes, I'm using stock app, no root or whatsoever, as I was also on my P9 with the exact same options for hotmail folders.
But I think you got it,m right, you have to setup your accounts as Microsoft exchange, not Hotmail, so as to get real time push and folders options I believe.
Let us know if this works.
Dam
OK thanks again for reply
Tried adding exchange account in settings but keep getting couldn't connect to server? Tried googling settings for exchange and tried couple but still get same error message.
I'm missing/not doing something obvious here can't for life of me see what!

Thnx for the tip. Added the account as an Exchange and there is the push option.
Any tips on how to set up as exchange? Mine either gets stuck "connecting to server" or "couldn't connect to server", tried using my email as domain, imap-mail.outlook.com as server and 993 as port but can't set it up.
Cheers

Hey,
I don't remember exactly how I did but as far as I can recall, it was rather simple. But in the parameters, here is what I can see :
Server : m.hotmail.com
Port : 443
SSL/TLS
certificate : none
Hope this helps,
