Hi everyone! This is my firt topic so please don't be hard on me if do something wrong. I recently flashed CyanogenMod 9 rom on my Galaxy S2, and I love it. The only thing I cand't seem to figure out is when I try to set a wallpaper, it forces me to crop it. Why can't I just leave it the way it is? Is there another way to set wallpapers without having to crop them? Thank you in advance.
Resize your image before you load it onto your phone if you find the crop is cutting out some of the detail.
The image is 480*800. I don't need to crop it, because it's the exact size. It really starts tu bug me. Why can't I just set it without having to crop it, like before?

I will try that, but I would like someone who uses the same rom to tell me how they do it, without having to use other apps. Why would they make it like this? I don't understand.
I tried Quickpic, and it forces me to crop it too. What am I doing wrong?

I shouldn't need to use other apps or launchers to do this thing. The fact is I use static wallpaper, not scrolling one (if I would use scrolling wallpaper, it wouldn't be a problem, as it lets me to crop the whole wallpaper), and therefore I downloaded a few wallpapers from xda (480*800) just for this purpose. On the stock rom, it let use the whole wallpaper, without having to crop it. On this rom, it forces me to crop it, and I can't select the whole wallpaper. Sorry for my English, if it doesn't make too much sense, as it isn't my native language.
That's the way the rom works. I also use CM9 & don't have a problem with this 'feature'. I choose wallpapers where I don't need to worry about details being cropped out.
Choose another wallpaper which doesn't crop out the details you want to see. Or use another rom if it's bothering you that much.

After hitting the same problem myself today, I did some fiddling around and I've figured out the reason for this behavior. Trebuchet launcher supports rotating homescreen. As such it requires your wallpaper to have both horizontal and vertical way of being displayed. The native resolution (or better, aspect ratio) that will allow you to select whole height of the image for CM9 wallpaper is 960x800 (or 6:5 ratio). I'm not quite sure why it can't be just 800*800 (maybe some limitation for when you have scrolling wallpaper enabled ), but that's the way it is.
Hope this makes things clear.
Here is your solution I hope
Download picspeed wallpapers and then install like a normal app. After that find the pic you want and try again. New options to choose size are available with your standard romantic or you can use the app. After I installed the app I unistalled the app and still was able to use the features but you may need to leave app installed

Hey everyone - having a slight problem with my all-time favourite wallpaper (which I brought along from my Symbian device) in combination with GO Launcher Ex.
Whenever I try to choose it as my homescreen wallpaper it gets zoomed in and very pixelated - TouchWiz doesn't have that problem.
Unfortunately Google & site search weren't able to provide a satisfactory solution ..so, anyone have an idea how to get it working?

Try to get that pic in 480 x 800 resolution, it will fit perfectly for portrait mode wallpaper.

Cheers mate, seems to have worked!
Blew the pic up to 480*852 first and then cropped 52 pixels from the top (only black anyways).
Resolution still seems to be fine enough.
Guess another possibility would have been to make a new all black 480*800 image and copy mine into the centre of that ..
Mmh. Will try that aswell.

Crap. Just installed the newest version of GO Launcher and back to zoomed wallpapers we are - regardless of size. Only way to fix it is to switch back to TouchWiz and then back to GO Launcher again - which sucks.

What if you use Wallpaper Set and Save or Wallpaper Plus? They come out very sharp when I use apps like these.
I have noticed this bug as well. I can get it resolved by going back to the default launcher temporarily, set the wallpaper there, then relaunch Go Launcher, and it seems to be correct. It only happens to portait pics where there is no background scroll though.
Could it not be due to the wallpaper being in scan mode (as you go through the 7 screens the background image moves along)? Because in my HD2 (in SD Android) would select a square-ish area from the centre of the image I wanted as a wallpaper. When I changed it to the same image for all screens, then the selection of the image was in the same shape as the screen.

Are those Apps? Haven't heard of them before and might give it a shot - however there's probably also a certain increase in battery use associated with that method, something I'm not sure I'm prepared to accept.

Yup, exactly the same here. If only it weren't for the GO Launcher Calendar widget, I'd try another launcher or stick with stock TouchWiz ..

I have unticked that option, the background isn't scrolling.
Meh..

The problem seems to be known but possibly not recognized as a problem by the GO Dev team:
After the research, it seems the wrong of Android system. Because the API we use to get wallpaper of system give us the zoom wallpaper.

Also, another possible solution seems to be https://market.android.com/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture - however, Live Wallpaper = more juice required.
Same here happened. I just switch to TW luncher and back to GO luncher
Actually, installing the latest update of the GO Calendar widget seems to have fixed the problem.
When I installed it the wallpaper first bugged out again but when re-setting it, it worked fine without switching to TouchWiz. Perhaps that'll work for someone else, too.

Had same problem, stopped using stock gallery to select wallpaper, and started using qpix to select wallpaper, and it works fine for me now. Seems problem for me was the stock gallery app I was using to select the wallpaper.
Currently having the same issue and neither TW or GoLauncher is playing nicely with me.

I am having a problem I am using GO Launcher Ex and my backgrounds appear to be zoomed in a little bit even though when I'm setting the wallpaper it is fully zoomed out with the orange box. It has only recently happened because it never did that before and it happens no matter what wallpaper I set.
Android 2.3.6 CheckROM GT-i9100
Anyone have any answers?
Thanks.

Just an update: I found that switching back to twlauncher fixed the problem with the wallpaper! Switched back to Go Launcher Ex and it stayed fixed. Weird.
In case that doesn't work
Hey I found that my background would not scroll if I swapped to the tw launcher and then back, and it seems that its the default wallpaper selector. I use wallpaper wizardii and choose the scroll option when setting wallpaper and it works great.
I've got an image that is exactly 960x540. I'd like to use it as wallpaper, but the selection box does not allow me to select the entire image. When I view the image on the phone, it fits perfectly, but the darn thing will not allow me to select the entire photo as wallpaper. Instead, it forces me to crop about 50% off the vertical axis. I must be an idiot. In case it matters, I'm running CM7 VALPHA3. I've tried it with both ADW and LauncherPro, but they both yield the same results. I tried it both with wallpaper scrolling enabled and without. Someone please tell me I'm missing something simple!
Thanks in advance.
There's an app called wallpaper wizardrii that let's you set the wallpaper however you want it. I use it and it works perfectly!

yeah there is an option to set it as the wallpaper exactly how you see it, so no cropping.

Thank you! Work great.
The resolution that the phone wants is 1080x960, this is because of wallpaper scrolling, doesn't matter if you use the scrolling or not. So if you resize it to 1080x960 it will use the whole picture without cropping.

Download Wallpaper Wizardii from the Market. It's free and let's you set your whole picture as your wallpaper.
Hope this helps.
I've run into the same thing. It's the way you set it. Try a program or another way.
If you are by chance setting it from a browser, make sure you're tapping the image to download it before tapping to set as. I have found a few times where I had the thumbnail open instead of the actual pic.
I always use third party launchers, and I really haven't had an issue with it... even though I do have to crop a bit.
Why does it ALWAYS crop my wallpapers, even the factory ones too. I can't find a setting that will disable this and my wallpapers look like ****. Does same thing on aftermarket launchers too.
Some have had luck with certain wallpaper apps and launchers being used in conjunction. What works for me is using an app called "PicSpeed Wallpapers." Download it and then go into your gallery. Find a picture you want as your wallpaper-> menu> set as-> PicSpeed. Here you'll have an option to have it scrollable (doesn't work for me), vertical, or horizontal. Horizontal makes them look like "normal" again. Kind of an extra step but worth it. Hope this helps
My wallpapers look fine. You shouldn't have to use another app. There must be a setting somewhere. I don't think that is standard.
I seem to remember something coming up the first time I opened the wallpapers, but didn't read it and accidently clicked the "do not show me again" box. Any way to restore the wallpaper settings to stock?

OK, I think I figured this out. If you long press on the screen you can pick wallpapers and that is how I always have done it. Now the other way to set the wallpaper is to click the menu button (the physical button) then click wallpapers, then the type of wallpapers and when you select one it gives you the resize option. So play around with that and you should be good to go.

Do you have any other picture management apps installed?
Ive tried both ways and I always get the prompt to resize the wallpaper to the truncated version.
Ive also tried ADW launcher, quick pic, wallpaper wizardii. Nothing seems to work. No scroll. Very annoying.

My guess is that scrollable wallpapers lag this phone so bad that they just disabled it in the kernel. The GPU in this phone is way underpowered for the screen resolution.
adw launcher has always had this issue...had it with my streak as well. i talked to the adw dev about it and he was aware of the issue but couldn't fix it as he didn't have a test unit (and probably didnt want to be bothered with it). i assume other launchers would have similar issues (due to landscape transition sizing)
always used a live wallpaper or found a higher res patterned picture that could be cropped without too much pain.

I'm totally stock and rooted but I don't get the resize option on the screen long press way. Strange!!
No matter how I choose my wallpaper, it does this. If I choose a wallpaper I downloaded for 1280x800 sometimes the orange box is the size of the entire pic and it looks great. But it shouldn't do this with the stock wallpapers.
Something else, If I set the wallpaper during Go launcher and then switch to TW the wallpaper will resize itself and looks perfect.
Hello
I've been having trouble with setting a wallpaper from the day I bought this phone. I've now tried 4 different roms over the past couple of weeks, those being AOSP, AOKP, ParanoidAndroid and Sammy Stock, none of these allow me to set an image as a wallpaper without cropping it, even if I choose pictures that have been resized in Photoshop to 720x1280. This is quite frankly getting very frustrating, to the point where it almost makes me want to buy an iPhone (yeah, forgive the blasphemy). One of my main reasons for buying the S3 was it's gorgeous screen.
Is anyone else having the same issue? It doesn't matter if I use ES File Explorer, Gallery, the Album app from Xperia, the phone always forces me to crop. I've searched a couple of threads for answers, and tried taking a screenshot of the wallpaper I want, but still I need to crop it.
best regards, Tim
My standard answer to this question is to use Image2Wallpaper from Google Play .Or and PicSpeed Wallpapers .
jje
This one works for me without cropping in TW
All background with this resolution should work with no issue...
Thank you both for replying, I will check out those apps mentioned
I've included a screenshot of the wallpaper that was attached to your post, here's how it looks on my S3, currently running Paranoid 4.1.1.
De-crop yourself!
Put your finger on one of the blue point and move it. You should be able to select the full picture...
You mean making the selection rectangle as small as possible or the other way around?
Cause it's stretched out to it's limits in that screenshot
You should be able to make the selection rectangle bigger (at least I can on stock rom...)
Maybe something with the rom you use or with the gallery app included in this rom...
This also happens on my stock rom, and every other rom I've used so far =/
Thanks for trying anyway

This same thing happens to me every picture I choose, no matter what size or shape! And when I try to adjust the cropping, proportionally the shape stays the same, It just always cuts some of the pic out. Is there a way to take a photo , image etc. and place it somewhere so that it shows with the rest of the stock wallpapers instead of picking from the gallery??
Btw: I'm on Clean Rom 2.1 w/ Clean Kernel
