OK so I noticed there isn't exactly a lot of development for the Streak, personally I don't like butchering existing roms, I would rather build from source, this is what I do for the HTC Desire and is hopefully what I intend to do for the Dell Streak.
Android has been built from source for a variety of devices within the XDA community so why not the Dell Streak? Well this is where I am hoping to change things.
I've started work on a vendor so we can build Android from source for the Streak.
My work is available here
If anybody else has experience and wants to contribute please let me know.
I estimate its about 80% complete at the moment and I'm hoping to get it provisionally finished by tonight or tomorrow, and then I will try and build Eclair as a first.

I'm trying a froyo build for the Streak now, wifi and bluetooth will probably be broke initially but I'm hoping that the graphics, sound and radioif will be ok.

Brilliant news! Let us know how it goes!
cool, a few of us have been trying with the codearoura git.
there's issues with building a valid boot.img and it looks like the 1,6 kernel is a mashup of various ones..
I think its time to start applying pressure to Dell to get them to release the source code now..
AdamG, I am using your custom ROM on HTC desire and its awesome. I'm really glad that you are gonna be working on Rom for dell streak which I'm getting in few days time.
Your work is awesome. Thank-you.

I wouldn't recommend using the codeaurora git, the people who work on that submit most of the patches to gerrit, so the AOSP git contains most of the enhancements of codeaurora.
Dell should of released the kernel long ago, all other major vendors have done it and I don't see what makes them any different.
Everything would be fine if Dell released their damn kernel source (like their lawfully required to)
Regardless, i'm looking forward to your work Adam! I'm having ROM-flash-withdrawal symptoms
Just thought I would add, I think we will lose the camera completely if we want to use Froyo, the older 1.6 libcamera.so is not compatible. The new 2.1 release from Dell might work, so if anybody has 2.1 on their Streak let me know.
I use my streak for media, surfing and gaming so I'm up for getting rid of the camera if I can have flash 10.1 and jit. Looking forward to your release.

can all those who are registered on the dell community forums ( I can't login) please make a formal request for the source code for the streak.
Remind them that they MUST release it and quickly to be compliant with the GPL..
that other companies manage to get the source code out the same time the devices are released, and that the streak has been available in the UK for quite a while now..
If they don't comply with due haste then we will get gpl-violations involved..
the more that post the better..
Well I got froyo built for the Streak, but the boot image is stuck in a boot loop so I'm trying to see what the problem is at the moment.

thanks for the link, I applied those changes but its still boot looping, I think its something more to do with the init scripts.
Adam, If you get a froyo rom out I promise the first thing I'll do after booting into it is install the Paypal app and buy you a beer ;-)
I'll buy u 10 !

great effort, guys, I'll follow this with interest. I was contemplating buying the Streak whilst visiting the USA as it's so much cheaper than the UK, but then I found out even off-contract they're locked to ATT!! I'm sure with some community effort the Streak will become recognised as one of the great android devices.
might be worth dropping a note to this blog

about this new initiative?
**UPDATE**
Brad is doing some amazing work on the Android msm-2.6.32 (froyo) kernel. He still has quite a bit of work ahead of him, but you can follow is development on his site at: http://brad-smith.co.uk/streak/. I think we all would agree that Android 2.2 + Streak = AWESOME!!
I will post more info as it comes in!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I gotta get some sleep, but before I do so, I wanted to share my accomplishment.
With the help of XDA and all of the guys hanging out in freenode/#dellstreak, I have finally got my Dell Streak to boot 1.6 from the Qualcomm's source/AOSP using a compiled kernel.
Nothing works at the moment (i.e. sound, proximity sensor, wifi, bluetooth, ect...), moreover, this is only a proof of concept. The real goal is to get 2.2 (Foyo) booting. If you want to help with development, please visit freenode/#dellstreak IRC. Here are some screen shots... More info to come later...
excellent work
Nice work
WOW!, I don't even know what to say... Congratulations! Really looking forward to all your work.
"All our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike -- and yet it is the most precious thing we have"
Very Nice! (in Borat voice)
U da maan!!!! thanks for opening the doors of ROM flashing frenzy.
very good job. i was having a play with this myself but couldnt get it to boot
Great work! I'll be following your progress religiously.
yup ill be dropping in helping out esp on froyo builds once we have a good kernel to use as im stronger in porting android than i am building kernels
/me edits signature to add dell streak porting to the list
awesome job
Great work! Hope you have time to update the guide on how to build it soon.
Excellent work! I'm really looking forward to where this goes. If you need any beta-testers later on, hit me up.
My Hat off,Well Done
So what comes next?
I came across this site: h ttp://jaxov.com/2010/03/flash-10-1-preview-on-dell-mini-5-tablet/
Is a demo of the Dell Streak running flash 10.1. Not sure if it is running froyo, but since flash 10.1 runs only on 2.2 I would say it is running 2.2
Would be nice if we could find that rom.
Anyone with a friend inside Adobe ?

So maybe I'm thinking on the wrong track here but if streak there is running flash wouldn't that mean dell had a 'working' 2.2 rom? back in "Posted by Jaxov on March 24, 2010"???
WTB vanilla!
I am really looking forward to not using the Dell UI as well as 2.2
Great work, I would love to buy you some beers

The Streak in the Video is totally out of Dell UI
great work i have been on the forum since before i bought the streak looking for any android developement activity and now its finally making a push, will be greatly anticipating your work.
i just graduated from a Captivate to a streak. im very happy w/ the phone/tablet considering all the great things this phone has that the Captivate doesnt. i know that there are little roms for this and i would like to help. so im trying to see if theres anyway that we can port a kernel from a custom rom and put it on our Streaks? im open to any intel you guys have to offer. i know when i had my samsung, i loved the speedmod kernel that was avail. just did a flash and boom, youre done. hoping that i can get some kind of build or foundation started here. any help would be much appreciated!
Cheers!!!

I'm not a dev, but I just recently left the captivate myself. If you want a custom kernel, I think you'll have to build it yourself. The Streak isn't like the captivate with many more users and devs, and the captivate had other phones to borrow stuff from. It also needed those things a lot more, since it had some crappy software issues.
Personally, I'm going to learn as much as I can about this so I can do my part and help with this great and under appreciated phone.

I've read about other programs useful for cooking, but as a newbie to Android/Rom dev'ing I'm curious as to which program would be best to begin Rom development for the Streak 5?
I too would like any info on developing roms. I recently traded my iphone 4 for my current dell streak. I absolutely love this phone.
If any dev out there could give any tips I would live to start playing round with roms. Makes for a great hobby especially with winter on the way.
I know theres alot to it, everyone has to start somewhere, it would be nice to start having more of s choice of roms for our device
Thanks in advance, thanks for starting this thread

I know that dsixda's Android Kitchen is compatible with the Streak 7, I wonder if one of the plugins will support the mini. If not, is there another feasible Kitchen prog to deodex?
That kitchen does work for the 5 inch Streak ROMS. Its what I used for Streakin' 354.
Yes title says everything
Can we have ics or honeycomb
Why dell is not opensourcing the streak 5 drivers
just wait. since dj steve is back there is a small chance...
Yes possibly, ICS is a possibility, forget about honeycomb though.
I dunno, I think dj steve had honeycomb booting on the streak 5. He may do it for the laugh ;-)
Afaik though, honeycomb doesn't have phone capabilities anyhow.

He's been able to boot HC for nearly a year now, but it's never been very useful since many thing didnt work.
Now that ICS is out there's no real reason to attempt to work on HC at all
ICS source code is going to be released soon.
http://www.itworld.com/mobile-wireless/224209/google-serves-android-40-source-code
Once it's released, I"m sure our dominant programmers will be all over it, trying to get ICS for the streak!
if you really want to help the initiative, donate to DJ_Steve's paypal account. He's trying to raise money to upgrade his servers so they can handle the ICS compiling. That would be the biggest help to getting ICS available on the Streak 5.
You can find his donation link here:

DJ_Steve started working on ICS yesterday, for the Dell Streak 7. He fully plans on making it, for the Dell Streak 5, as well.

I still love the Miui projet of Dj Steve, when post the first beta he promise he will take care on this. But. ..
I waiting and check this thread for every day to see a stable Miui version then buy a streak for replace my P100 because the resolution 800x480 of dell is a good choice for all my favorite game. ..But. ..Hope less. ..
