[Q] A few questions about SGS2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to buy used sgs2, im living in Serbia(if someone doesen't know, Serbia is in Europe), i heard that some sgs2 have something bug with mmc chip, but i also heard that just sgs2 for USA have that chip bugs, am i right? and if i got that mmc chip bug what that means? Please answer me !!!

anyone ?!

Frankly, I have no idea what you are talking about. "MMC chip"! what in the world is that?

Re: the emmc bug, don't worry about it. Honestly. Several things need to happen for your phone to get borked as per this post. Buy the phone if you like it/want it, this won't be an issue.

I'm still little confused, can i root sgs2, flash new rom-s, change kernels ? and do other stuff without bricking my phone ?

You can brick anything if you don't follow instructions, or try to flash firmware meant for another device.
Read, follow instructions, and above all else, only use firmwares/kernels/bootloaders/etc that are meant for whatever particular model of phone you end up buying.

Ok, thank u both, ur answers are very important for me

The galaxy s2 is almost indestructible. Just don't mess with the repartition box or pit files in odin unless you are 100 % sure what you're doing. And make sure you are in the right forum. Eg if you have a i9100 don't flash a I9100G zip or vice versa.

Plus, if you buy your phone in your region, i highly doubt that it will be incompatible.
Another thing, 2 days ago I did my first root, flash, load of roms upgrade, heck I flashed my phone 18 times (binary counter claims) because I was afraid I had broken it and HEY!
Now I have ICS with a custom ROM which works great!
Just follow instructions like kilometers4 said and you will be fine!

How do u mean "if you buy your phone in your region, i highly doubt that it will be incompatible." , incompatible with what?

Right. I'm going to make this really simple for you, OK ? So make sure you read it really really slowly.
1) The 'emmc bug' - forget about it. Don't ever mention it again. It has been blown out of all proportion on here by people who should know a lot better. If I see you mention it one more time in this thread, I'm going to post an epic facepalm pic. You don't want me to do that, do you ?
2) When Bolio said 'I highly doubt it will be incompatible with your region', he meant if you buy that used SGS2, it should work OK in your region with your carrier. Nothing else. Just like the emmc thing you're trying to see something between the lines which isn't there. Stop being paranoid/difficult.
3) As CTomGee said, people who brick their phones on here tend to be the ones who don't read or follow instructions. If you do read/follow instructions whatever you do with your phone (rooting, flashing custom roms), you should be fine. The chances of you bricking your phone increase with how little you read/follow instructions.
Now then. This thread has seen enough ridiculousness. You have enough information to enable you to make a decision whether to buy the phone or not. If you don't, read the Stickies. Either way, decide.

ok

buy i9100
dont buy any other version the the original. they all suck, nothing compared to the real thing.
GALAXY S2 I9100 , no 777, no 989, no i9100g.
i dont have any bug and everything works like charm

New to I9100, couple of questions.

Hi everyone, I bought a galaxy s 2 I9100 from somebody Nd the phone is great. It is already rooted however it doesn't have clockworkmod recovery installed. How do I install it on my phone? And when I do can I install any I9100 rom or does it have to match my kernel version XWKDD? Thanks sorry I'm a noobie to this phone
The easiest way to get it is to flash Chainfire's CF-Root kernel.
But, just a word of advice: don't flash anything until you read and understand the basic procedures for flashing a ROM or kernel, etc., because it's NOT that difficult to understand, but you can mess up your phone by doing dumb things, most of which are already covered here. So, give yourself some time to absorb the basics before jumping in and getting yourself in trouble.

Ah, well, then you should be fine. The basics are the same for all the S2 variants. Just know not to flash any of the G series ROMs (and avoid Re-Partition in Odin) and you are all set.
Like I mentioned, it's not that complicated, as you apparently already know, but almost every time problems arise, it's from following advice from another forum, at least from what I've observed anyway. They'll say something about "I followed this guide...." and include a link to a four year old post in some other forum about the wrong model or something and act stunned when they brick their device because they followed the bad advice.

I'd suggest you start with a stock ROM, such as the latest KK5 and use the CF-Root kernel (as in my signature). You could always venture into custom ROM territory later, after you get a feel for it.
I tend to gravitate toward stock experience myself, and I love JKay's mod which works well with stock ROMs, but there are some terrific custom ROMs here to choose from, if you feel so inclined.

Rooting The Samsung Galaxy S III (NOOB Q&A)

Hi there guys, I know you guys will make fun of me and everything but I felt that XDA is the best place to ask this question.
If I root my Galaxy S III will i void my warranty? Also, if I root my device will i be able to restore my original factory (carrier) firmware and everything as if it wasn't ever touched.
Finally, how easy is it?
Yes it will void your warranty, and again yes you can restore it back to all stock.
Do post your questions in q & a thread next time
《tapatalked from galaxy s3》
Yes, but you can always delete flash counter with triangleaway app and then flash original firmware from www.samfirmware.com . So you will have phone like out of a box and with warranty.

I do not want to start a new thread for this though it goes bit offtopic. I was reading on day 1 of my purchase and decided to actually use the device and be sure does it have immediate issues as is so I decided to not do anything to it. Now I am bit more interested as I mostly have not had any problems that I could list as immediate hardware problems. I read first that there is way to reset one counter but not other, and how I understood it was that there is counter for ROM flashes and one for Kernel flashes, and one for ROM flashes. How I read it was that the Kernel counter can't be reset as of yet but ROM flash counter can be reset.
There is a method to root that does not include flashing a insecure kernel what to me feels like something that should not rise that permanent counter, right?
Also is it more recommended to try something like Android Revolution HD 6.0 or Cynogenmod rather than just plain root?

There is a reason why rooting invalidates your warranty: it's very easy to mess with stuff you shouldn't. You may delete files that the OS needs to boot (fixable through recovery, or a reflash), or overclock and overvolt your CPU and GPU so much that your processor burns. So, if you do root, make sure you read guides for anything you do, and that you understand what you're doing.
It's just like driving, actually. If you know what you're doing and pay attention, you will be allright most of the time, unless when someone else screws up and you get unlucky. If you know what you're doing but get complacent, you may miss a sign or something like that, and the chances you get in an accident increase (a good example is the famous brickbug from the Note, SGS2, Tab 7.7, etc: Samsung screwed up, and root users who didn't pay attention could brick their devices. Those events are rare, though). If you have no idea what you're doing and are just following to online guides the letter, your car has just became a weapon of mass destruction. Accidents will happen, sooner or later.
So, be careful, and make sure you understand what's going on whenever you see the SuperUser/SuperSU notices. If you do that, you will be fine, and (as others already said) you will be able to get the software 100% "unrooted" if something ever needs warranty.

Which devices' ROMs can be flashed on the SGS3?

Simple question...which other devices' ROMs can also be flashed on the SGS3?
I know for a fact you can flash just about any other devices' firmwares.
Deeeeeeeeeerp. Seriously?! Only the i9300 firmware works on the i9300. God!!
Quick and easy answer for you, none
Unless of course there is another phone on the market with the exact same hardware as a s3.

Sorry? I can flash i727 ROMs on my T989. If that can't be done with i9300, please say so.
Normally rom developers will state clearly which model is compatible. So just make sure you read instructions as clear as possible.

hmm... i think it's possible to brick your device that way. i was gonna flash s3 omega rom on my htc desire to gain those new things everybody is drilling about but then i decided to sell it to gain 150Euros(yeah that right, i sold it for 150e ) and to buy s3....
Dont even try to flash some rom that is from another device.... instead sell s3 and buy that device you like more....
HMMM... what device is better than s3 !?!?! - Yup.... NONE !!!!!!!!!
I9300 international version as this forum is only I9300 firmware can be flashed .
However some users in NA have tried to flash firmware from here on non I9300 phones . Success you would have to ask them but they only report bricked phones here .

Don't you have enough Roms to play with?
If you don't want to throw 600 bucks through the window just flash Roms designed for our device.

Correct, that's why I asked. See, I own an SGH-T989, and I-727 ROMs are perfectly safe to flash on it. I was merely wondering if if I9300 has also has a counterpart, which based on the replies, it seems like there isn't. I'm not going to flash random ROMs because I'm well aware ones that aren't safe can hard brick. That's all I wanted to know.

[Q] {Q] UK Orange I1900p running 4.0.3, rooting and Jelly bean

He there,
I will open by saying I am a complete novice at this but can follow instructions to the letter as long as I have them in front of me.
I have a Galaxy S2 on the Orange network currently running ICS 4.0.3
I have tried rooting it, following the instructions from one or two threads here and seemed to achieve little success "Titanium Backup says NO!"
Thankfully, I haven't bricked it XD
I was wondering if any of the experts here could give me either a link to working instructions on the method to root and perhaps even install a JB based kernel to this particular device in the S2 family or would be so gracious as to spell it out for me here?
Many thanks.

Ummm thanks, I think. But this is exactly what I didn't need. I need follow able instructions not vague statements in broken Internet speak.
Is there anyone out there willing/able to do that?
What you "need" to do is read the rules and stop expecting to be spoon fed.
Maybe Sun90 thought you had done just a teensy weensy bit of the donkey work for yourself,so youd understand what hes saying.
Ahh yes, this explains EVERYTHING.
For your information I have tried doing the legwork myself. What that got me was clockworkmod SEEMING to install but then being informed by titanium still informing me my phone was still unrooted.
I had wondered where I was going wrong since I am already aware there are specific complications with my particular handset. If you had read my original post rather than just jumped in to attack me then you would have known that.
But then I am not surprised at this reaction, a friend warned me there are a lot of snarky jerks on here that like to shoot people with valid questions down, I had hoped to prove him wrong. Maybe I still will, in part.
Well a friend told me theres a lot of lazy twats that come here and expect to be spoon fed....not prepared to spend their own time learning.
People help other people out here, and the normal courtesy is to thank people. Now if you dont understand what they mean,a normal person would ask them to expand on or explain their answer......not be a sanctimonius git like you.
Now,read your 1st post again, some crap about you can do stuff/guides if "its layed out in front of you".Then you say youve had that twice and youve still failed. Now you want someone to spend their time with attempt no.3.
Hope you like your orange p model,I stupidly bought the plain unbranded one....lol.

Hi guys! I'm a noob, and I have some questions

Hi guys!
First of all, I'm sorry if my english sounds wierd, not my main language.
I'm not here to ask witch rom or kernel are the best, just some help.
Recently I got an S2 - GT-I9100 with stock 4.1.2 room. I'm loving this phone, and I kinda like the samsung's rom even tough it consumes a lot of battery. I'm kinda curious about CyanogenMod and using moded kernels, but, I'm kinda afraid of messing up everything and brick my phone. Checked if I had the eemc firmware insane chip and I got it, so it makes me even more insecure of trying out new stuff.
Now for the questions:
I have this phone locked to a carrier, can I still flash it?
Can I flash it even if I have the eemc bug without any problems?
Can you guys recomend a really good newbie guide with each and every step to flash and install a new kernel? (I've looked around this website and the internet, but, those that I find kinda' dont explain everything in an easy way)
I've instaled clockworkmod on my phone, but it says it dosent suport it. why not?
Can I have a custom kernel with sammy's stock room?
thanks in advance.
1) Yes, you can flash custom firmware if your phone is carrier locked
2) Yes, you can flash your phone despite having a chip susceptible to the EMMC bug, which only affects phones running rooted stock 4.0.4 firmware
3) Do not attempt to flash anything to your phone until those guides make sense. Right now they look like they 'don't explain things in an easy way' because you obviously don't know a lot about Android, and in particular this phone. If you take the time to read/learn, the guides very quickly will become easy to understand & you'll know what you're doing. Flashing without knowing what you're doing leads to busted phones & dented wallets.
4) Without knowing exactly what you flashed, I have no idea. If you want to root your phone, there is a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has all the info you need. It honestly doesn't get any simpler than that thread. If you don't find it easy to understand, as I said above, don't do anything to your phone until you do.
5) Yes, you can run a custom kernel with a stock rom

If you flash Philz kernal for your software build its a safe kernal from the brick bug. If you download the zip file it will not only put the safe kernal on but also root it. Link below

If you're running rooted 4.0.4 stock & you do a factory reset, there's a fair chance you'll brick your phone. For the technical version, Google/XDA search is your friend.

Hi once more!
Can I ask you for some more help? I read the post about philz kernel, understood what I have to do and I want to thank you about trying to help me. I'm sorry to bother you once more, since I prefer to be certain.

I got stock 4.1.2
Baseband is I9100BULS1
Kernel version is 3.0.31-88955 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT KST 2013
Compilation Number is JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
So I guess the one that I need to download and install is:
<< 17.04.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v4.93.6 with CWM 6.0.3.1 based recovery >>
XWLSD (bootloop fixed)

Also I got SuperSU already installed, this means I have to unistall it and do this or can I install this kernel anyway?

No worries, Im happy to help.
If you already have superuser just download the "tar" file and flash it with odin as thats just the kernal.
Your build is LSD, download that one. which is philz 5.06.1
Your LSD build is quite old, have a look on samfilmware for your region as im sure you should get atleast LSW. Theres also LSZ and MS1 builds out.
Sorry here is the one you need

Sorry for being such a pain in the ass.
Well tbh, this phone is second hand, and the guy that sold it to me, had a custom rom on it but I asked him to flash it back to stock at the time. it came with stock 2.4 or something, but I updated it trough kies to 4.1.2. I looked around samfilmware and I only saw the build I have right now. I dont think I can update it
So I only need to get odin3, put the cellphone in dm, flash the new tar and thats it?

Correct (4.0.4 being ICS). Even if you have a susceptible chip, the firmware has to have the bug which causes the chip to be scrambled/corrupted, which means anything before 4.0.4 or anything after (or anything custom for that matter) poses no problems.

I'm at work right now, so I can only do it after work. So I just need to, follow the instructions on the NEAT ROM post to flash it? They dont say how to backup your things tough but I searched in this forum and found how to do it-. So I only need to use the cwm to back it up. Does it back up EFS folder too?
You have been so far a really helpful dude, thanks mate! Was kinda afraid of posting something here, but turns out there is really nice people around here!
Btw if the mods want I can just PM you for some help instead of posting here.
