[Q] Repair scratch? - Sony Tablet S

Has anyone had the unfortunate luck of scratching your screen? Mine got scratched by accident by a headphones twist tie. I don't even know how it got in the case with my tablet as I kept it apart from anything that could damage it until I could get a protector... I think someone might have tossed it in there not knowing what they were doing, i.e. thinking they were helping me not lose the earphones...
Anyone know the best way to try and repair a scratch on the tablet?

It has a protector from the factory, and that is probably the only thing scratched. Search this forum for instructions on peeling it off so you can replace it.

Wow, didn't even realize it had a protector on. After I had ordered one and had it waiting to try and fix the scratch. Thank you for pointing that out!

Hey cool really thank you didn't realised this!!

Anyone want to see the inside of a thunderbolt?

Here is my sad story.....dropped the T-bolt for the first time and the digitizer cracked (had it in a case even). So I ordered a new one from repairs universe and they advertised that it would come with a guide. It did not, but the digitizer arrived quickly. So being an electrical engineer I decided that I could probably do it anyway.
I managed to get it apart and learn the hard way about a few things not to do. I manged to crack the LCD :-( I looked an no one has them :-(
My model used a Sharp lq043y1dx04 according to the sticker.
Anyway, I have figured out how to take the T-Bolt apart and figured that while I wait for a new LCD to become available I could at least share some pictures with the community. Being a new poster though, how would you suggest posting pictures?
***Update - photos are here, let me know if there are any that you would like to see better: s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g378/bscythe/ ***
Finally, I do not recommend anyone try this....you need to remove the LCD in order to replace the digitizer. The LCD is double sticky taped to a metal tray. To get the two apart you must do a lot of prying which can destroy the fragile LCD. If you are going to try it, I'd recommend a 4" wide razor used for scraping windows to insert along side the LCD to use to pry with. Be careful not to cut the ribbons though!
I'm a mechanical/acoustical engineer...
For pics, I would use photobucket...
As for the screen and tray, usually they are one piece, is there any kind of tabs through the board that look like they may hold the tray in?

Me too!
Thanks for posting, OP.
Well I hope that my misfortune is at least helpful to others at some point since I could not find a teardown to reference before I tried fixing the phone myself.
I was able to get a new one from work (thank goodness for the large number of available upgrades on our account), but still plan to finish fixing this one when the LCDs become available. Putting it back together will be the easy part....I'll take better pictures during the process too.
Did you happen to notice where the cell and wifi antennas are located?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
They are located in the battery cover. If you take it apart you will see the metal tabs on the battery cover that connect to the phone for the antennas.
This is the first phone I have ever purchased insurance for. My nexus one took a few tumbles and survived but I would hate to try to replace this phone at retail price. At least ebay had nexus one pretty available for reasonable prices.
Good luck maybe you can still purchase the insurance through VZ.

Well I dropped mine too and the digitizer is cracked bad. It still works and tape is holding it all in place but I need to get it fixed. I have taken apart laptops and fixed them and am a mr fixit in many departments, so I hope I can do it without cracking the lcd. I ordered the digitizer and am hoping to get some tips from you. Is there any way you put a step by step together that could guide me through this process? I would greatly greatly appreciate it.
I looked at the pics and with the beveled edges of the tray it seems to be very hard to separate the lcd from the tray with a flat blade. Does the LCD have to be detached from the tray? Also, since the bottom part of the case is a molded piece do the internals slide up and out?
Thanks
I'm sure that isn't the only antenna.

[Q] Worst nightmare - dropped my atrix and cracked the screen HELP!

So i've been an Atrix owner for about 2 weeks now and my worst nightmare happend today. I was buying a drink from a vending machine and the phone slipped out of my pocket and fell SCREEN FIRST onto concrete.
I quickly picked it up and noticed THERE WAS A HUGE CRACK in the screen!
I AM SO SAD RIGHT NOW cause i bought the atrix outright from AT&T
i dont think the LCD panel itself was damaged but the glass on the surface only. The display looks perfectly fine still so i was curious if anyone knows how to switch out the glass part? What tools do i need?
I found this one ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorola-MB860-...838?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588d7db4fe
is this the right part?
or do i have to buy the entire LCD, cause its much more expensive:
http://cgi.ebay.com/AT-T-MOTOROLA-A...507?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33666a4883
also, does anyone know any reputable sellers that sell LEGIT parts such as the digitizer? I'm not sure if i can trust these random ebay sellers...any suggestions would be appreciated
i attached some pictures to show you what happend - i still can't believe it happend
i'm also really surpirsed the gorilla glass broke so easily. The drop was at MOST 1.5 feet..

Also, if you don't have the tools you might want this kit.

It's about the same price and those are both going to ship from Hong Kong. So expect a wait. I didn't find any sellers in the U.S.
There are some that would ship from the U.S. without tools but the price is more like fifty bones instead of 30 something.
Good Luck

Nah, they are more than capable. I replace digitizers frequently and I rarely have to break out my "good set' of tools. Yeah these are simply cheap lumps of plastic. But they work. And these tools should be safer to use than almost anything that the average person, who doesn't do this sort of thing regularly, might have on hand. I just didn't want him to order a digitizer and attack it with a butterknife. I was trying to be subtle about it tho... We don't want anyone to scuff their bezel now do we?
I am always on the lookout for great deals on tools for this. And I look forward to your recommendation for a tool set.

Warranty covers a broken screen? Reason I ask is because I would rather have MOTO replace the screen (or the phone entirely) than me replacing the screen and voiding the warranty. I do not have insurance
I broke the glass on my phone 3 weeks after I bought it and didnt have insurance on it. I called motorola and they sent me an rma. I sent it in and they sent it back to me fixed in less than a week. If I remember right it cost $90 for them to fix it.
so it was only the digitizer after all?

A friend and I splurged on the $60 iFixit tool kit because we made some spare cash on the side repairing classmates' phones. It works well, although I still don't know if I would justify the price. It seems that the major complaint on reviews for replacement electronics parts are the parts that come with them, if at all, so maybe getting a better set is worth it if you replace digitizers frequently. Replacing the Atrix digitizer/screen is a fairly easy task compared to other phones until you get to putting the new screen on, at which point trying to get the cables back into the housing becomes a pain.'
Good luck!

Ugh I'm going to have to do this. My digi. Is farked as well. Now, is there a video to put this back together?. I agree that taking it apart is not the hard part at all.
iFixit will have a tear down guide.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
Surprisingly there is no video to put it together...
Let me tell you from experience that it's damn near impossible to put it back together without tearing the digitizer ribbon straight off the screen while trying to slip it through that tiny hole that you pulled it out of. I've replaced two screens and I still don't think I can get it right.
My screen cracked twice while still under warranty, so I played the clueless n00b after I replaced the glass (cracked screens are not covered under warranty) and claimed the phone wasn't working and I couldn't figure out why.
Strange thing is, I also couldn't find a place online that would do replacement digitizers either. I didn't look for long, but if you don't have an option of a warranty return, I'd pay the $50 or so to let someone else do this for you and get it right...
YMMV...
I recommend taking it apart completely, you can attach the digitizer to the bezel/chassis and then you don't have to deal with trying to slide the cable through that tiny hole, you can just clean the digitizer, clean the lcd, put them together and then put the entire mounting plate back together and it just clips straight in...essentially you make this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/180835204777?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
completely removes the chance of tearing the cable off the back of the digitizer...which is pretty common, sort of adds the step of getting the mounting plate off the fascia bezel...but its not to hard, be careful when popping up the volume/buttons camera cable area, that cable tears easily.

[Q] Replacement bezel/housing? *FOUND!*

My front bezel/housing as a few minor nicks that are driving me crazy.. does anyone know a place to source a replacement bezel? I can find them for the I9100 all day long -- but nothing for the I777. I found a few places that sell the LCD/Digitizer/Bezel combo -- but that's a bit pricey for something I don't need, heh.

Had a dream last night my phone fell onto concrete and shattered everything to pieces. I fully blame reading your post as it was the last thing I read before going to bed.
As for what you're trying to find for replacing, parts are currently very hard to find. Hopefully more replacement parts will be made available as time goes on. I know I'm regularly looking because part of my business is smartphone repair.

Do you think it'll fit? Its stock black? How do you get it off anyway?
Why wouldn't it fit? It's an OEM piece. It should be the same color as stock, too. The only thing im not absolutely sure on is whether or not it will have the AT&T branding (I hope not!)

Its just the outer bezel, there's no branding. The touch screen/glass is what has the branding.
For those interested:
The good news is, its definitely an OEM piece. The bad news is that there is no way to replace it without breaking the LCD. The amount of force required to separate the LCD from the adhesive holding it to the bezel is outstanding.
Yes, I broke my LCD. Kind of frustrating since I only had a couple nicks on the bezel originally. That was the straw that broke the camels back so I ordered a Galaxy Nexus instead.
Hope this information helps someone else...

Yes I have the same problem, I went online to buy the frame, they don't sell it. You have to buy the entire housing and it looks pretty complicated. I'm trying to return the phone and they wouldn't take it because of a scratch on the metal piece. Did you ever figure out how to fix the frame only? I dont even know how to take the phone it self out. Looks like the entire insides have to be transferred to the new housing. It sucks, should of never bought this dang phone. Thanks
Does anyone know how to do this without using the heat gun?
Sorry to bump an older thread, but i want to change the entire housing (including bezel) but using the same lcd screen on my s2, would heating the screen to remove it from the old housing ruin the screen? has anyone does this sort of thing before that can chime in? my bezel is cracked n scratched and is driving me nuts!
any help at all would be appreciated!
I have been seeing them going on Amazon for 15 bucks, I really don't know about the reliability of the seller but they are supposed to OEM off original phones.

wow ...never heard of anyone getting a scratch repaired or buffed out...I don't believe you can....its not a tv where the glass could possibly get smooth out or buffed.....under that light film is many electroids that make current for the touch....the ditigizer.....do u have insurance on it?.....and have that film that came on the phone stock?.....say it don't charge or ssomething...put the film back on and send it out.. lol....that's what I try...what's the worst it happen....say it got damaged in shipping....lol....it will get placed on a self till a tech gets a work order to fix it by then..it will be forgotton and you'll have a replacement....these screens have issues anyways I look at it that way......lol blacks are grey....
Im wondering if one of the scratch removing liquids would work.? I think they sell it at hardware stores, its sold as a car windshield scratch remover...
depending how deep and big the scratch is filling it with liquid glass fixer...would he loose touch in that area?...how big is the scratch anyways and how deep you think?
edit...there is a liquid filler and scratch fixer for acrylics we used to at work...it goes on liquid and dries clear...for minor cracks but that depends how bad it is,then we would buff the scratch out..but I don't know if that work on these screens..might cause more harm then good..
I've got the Best Buy Black Tie coverage but as silly as it seems, they will only take it back if the screen is completely cracked. Plus, I just got done modding the heck out of this thing so I'd like to keep it. The scratch is deep enough to feel with your finger nail and can be easily seen in the right angles. It's annoying enough that I stare at it. Ive already tried polishing compound for car paint and seen no improvement. Someone told me there are kiosks at the mall where watch repair people fix watch faces. It sounds like a good idea but after reading a post by a guy who redid his Captivate screen, I'm not so hopeful.

Try going back to AT&T store and see if they'll swap it for you since you're still in the first 30 days. I traded my black Note for a white one, just had to pay $35.
A cotton cloth and toothpaste or metal polish will get it out after many hours of rubbing.
Almost any screen protector over top should instantly improve the look and feel.
The Touch Digitizer Screen cover is hard to get now at a good price, but they will most likely drop to $50 before too long.

Yes, it came from china and I hope this screen will work when I replace my crack LCD screen on my phone. How did the screen cracked? Well, I have a desk chair with a roller on the bottom. I kind of roll over it :/ I feel so ashamed hurting my precious phone lol.
Did you get it yet? I've been monitoring this post, since I also have a cracked screen and don't want to spend $200+ dollars on replacing or insurance. Please keep me updated on this. Thanx in advance.

don't want to burst your bubble, but that is the digitizer only. i think its really really hard to separate the two from each other. that is why they are so expensive to buy. but hey, might as well try if it is already broke. i understand the lcd is fine btw. i replace screens pretty often and with Samsung, you usually have to buy them fused already. guess it couldn't hurt to try though. good luck to ya, you may need a heat gun and thin wire. keep us updated when it comes in. I'm sure we all would like to know how it goes. good luck
i looked at the listing again, and i don't see any digitizer ribbon. so it looks like no digitizer is even on it. just the lens, but maybe you knew that and this is what you're looking for?

just my opinion is to find complete digitizer and lcd fused together, or else you are going to have a bad time. they are very expensive, but it shouldnt be too hard to do as long as you take your time. if you found a digitizer+lens, with out the lcd, it will be really difficult. heat gunning then getting something super thin to slide down to cut between your good lcd and cracked digitizer without scratching the lcd. ive done it on an iphone 4 and the lcd was scratched from it, but it did still work and i didnt break the lcd. if you do lens only, im not sure if you will be able to get the actual digitizer off of the original lens without tearing it an then placing it on the new lens with out bubbling up or anything. i would hate for you to be out a phone for a while. good luck to you sir
