Switching to Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello xda comunity,
I would like to begin by saying that I've been using Nokia phones so far no matter what their OS was just because of the hardware. Long story short, I am getting dissapointed by my new Lumia 800 and I want to switch to Android as soon as the next Nexus with JB is released. I can see that between Windows Phone and Android is a huge difference regarding hacking and tweaking because Android is an open source.
My question is: Without any knowledge about the Android OS, will switching be easy ( keeping stock OS and ROMs and Kernels ), or I will spend weeks to try and find better ROMs and get into hacking my device??

Switching is easy , no need to be anxious nexus devices especially are easy

Is there any difference between using a phone bought from the store ( stock ) and using it with custom ROMs, Kernels, stuff??

Yeah, it can be. Some roms are really similar to stock, but with some tweaks to improve performance and battery. But other roms are completely different, just take a look at miui. Both miui and cm supports themes, so you can change how it looks to your liking
For many phones custom roms also gives the user access to newer android versions than what's avaible officially, though that is probably not the case with a nexus device
Kernels can be tweaked to improve performance and battery and also usually supports overclocking, so you can let it work on higher speeds to improve performance, but this reduces battery life.

Yeah.. one of my biggest concerns about moving to Android is losing the things that Nokia is known for: Battery life and Strong Signal. Will my future Nexus last a full day without any "battery saving app"?? Are there any problems with the signal?? I know my questions sound dumb, but I'm used to hate Android and I don't trust myself right now

Well you're battery life can be extended to 2/3 days with moderate/light use, but frankly, dont expect to get nokia levels of battery life. However I'm sure with the right radio/modem you can get great signal. Plus there are loads of tweaks to improve connection speeds/signal etc so you'll be fine there.
As mentioned earlier, a custom rom, especially the really modified ones, can improve your battery life, speed, ease of use, amount of features and the look and feel of your phone immensely!
As for ease of coming to android, it's pretty easy. I got my phone, watched a few tutorial vids/read some threads and had my phone rooted and running a custom rom in a matter of hours. Nexus/Samsung devices i find are especially easy to use/customize

[Q] Are custom kernels superior?

I have been wondering how individuals can make custom kernels that outperform the stock Android kernel made by Google's finest.
I use a custom kernel which gives better speed, battery, extra mods etc. but it has been made by a 21 year old student.
Why don't Google just build the kernel like that in the first place? They've got the know-how, right?
I think a lot of it is that the kernels that come stock work best with the phone in general. Sure, you can overclock and everything but at the end of the day that ends up decreasing overall life of the device by adding extra stressors on the device.
Not saying that that's even relevant anymore, given that the 2 year contract is definitely short enough to beat the hell out of your phone without too many major repercussions at the end of it. I think they just like investing in the long term.
Agree. Stock kernels are most stable.

Also agree stock kernel is better all round in most cases but of course you get better performance with a good custom kernel.
You do get instability and worse battery in most cases on custom. Depends what you want out of your phone. Most of my roms I release with stock kernel.
I think everybody is just obsessed with over clocking when in most cases is not needed

Custom kernels are like teenagers and sports cars. Eventually you grow out of it and want stability. However custom kernels are awesome and thanks to the devs who tweak then.

Overclock maybe yeah, not needed. But undervolt, it can saves battery life..CMIIW.
They sure are mate, they sure are!
But, they "could" mess around with the phone and its functionality "if" its not the perfect one!
Mostly, the battery life "if" its overclocked!

Worth going back to GB?

I'm just generally asking peoples opinions, not which rom is best, or which provides the most battery life. But just generally we all know there has been slight decrease in battery since ICS and Jellybean, and I do remember having at least a bit more battery life than I do now when I was on GB. So people's opinions, does anyone think it's worth going back to GB?
No. It's like asking 'Would you rather go back to Windoze 3.1 ?' (A: Only if I can go back to 1993). Making an absolute statement like 'Battery life running GB stock is better than running ICS or JB stock' is nonsense. For some people & some phone setups, sure, they might well get better battery life running GB stock. And for a whole bunch of other people, that won't be the case.
So it's not a particularly meaningful question to begin with due to the variables involved.
Bungle is right.GB is very old.A lot of apps are made to support Android 4.0/4.1 +.With GB you will lose this
Battery life was better on gb but jb is so much faster, smoother and better looking! so its worth the extra battery usage
Haha well I do like the extra performance and looks but I'd also like the extra battery life, trying to find a balance in ROMs and kernels just to find my phone to last a whole day without being used and losing 50% battery is really hard for me D:

for me GB is an escape pod for people who needs a lot of ram and would like the old vs the new, since the JB uses up a lot of ram even from just stock apps but lacks style and interface, it's ugly when you look at it from a person who has a JB. S
Rooted stock GB for me,with speedmod kernel.
I wouldnt use anything else.
Why are you using GB theunderling? What are the exact benefits?
I'm also thinking about going back to GB

I use it because it works as it should and has the best battery life;for me.
Ive tried loads of custom roms and Ive found theres always one problem or other,or the battery life is poor.
This isnt criticism of developers work, but I just use what I said earlier with the Samsung bloatware removed.
And these type of threads arent advised,as theres 1000s of different setups available which work differently for each user;thus can result in arguments.

[Q] Recommended ROMs/Kernels for Battery Life and Configurability

OK, I realize that everyone has a different idea of the best ROM and/or kernel, and I fully expect to try out a few different ones to see which is best for me. However, I am hoping that I won't be irritating anyone by asking for suggestions on where to start. I don't need a lot of extra features, but I do like to be able to configure as many settings as possible--that is the main reason I chose Android in the first place. I also want to maximize battery life. Based on my experience with SlimBean on the Nexus S, it and SlimKat will be definite contenders, but which others should I consider? And are there any specific kernels I should look at? It will be a couple of weeks before my LGOG arrives, so there should be fairly stable 4.4.2 based ROMs by then, but I don't mind using 4.3 ROMs if they will provide better performance. I have been using a Galaxy S II for the last several months, where NeatROM is the only real choice if you want good battery life, so I'm a bit out of the loop.
I have been having a similar issue with trying to maximize performance and battery life at the same time. I have found that using android 4.3 really does make a huge difference in battery life and it makes all the animations, I think, look more fluid. Now as Kernels go, I cannot recomend one in particular, but look for one with eco mode or just change your processor setting with Trickster mod. I use only 2 cores, the ondemand governor, and keep my frequencies between 1026000 and 1512000. Hopefully this helps.

Is the oneplus X worth getting if I don't want to root my phone?

I'm not really into tweaking and messing with my phone so I just wondered If the Oneplus X stock experience is a good one or not. I heard some worrying issues like a weak version of the 801 proccesor, games lagging in european version(I live in Israel so its probably the version I'm getting) and camera lags. If someone can clarify on those issues a bit more and tell me if the phone is worth getting without rooting, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.
I love the Oxygen OS and am running the phone completely stock but most of the users here like the CM, though it's very subjective. I like minimum tweaks and simple and fast UI. Oxygen OS is perfect for me. Now for the bugs that the phone suffers is mostly software related and will be fixed in a couple of updates. And no need to worry about the "weak" 801, it still is the "801" and the performance is fast and smooth and will be even better with future updates. Battery life for a 2525mah is damn good. It gets me through the day with 20-25% still left in the tank. Camera is not the greatest but decent enough to get the job done. Though the video recording if really crap even my old and ageing Xperia SP can do much better than this. But overall i love it and am enjoying using it for almost a month now. Hope this helps

Definitely helped Thanks!
I would say that the oneplus x is worth getting especially if you don't want to root your phone!
I usually root and fiddle around a lot with my phones, but with the oneplus x it took almost 1 month until I couldn't resist and just had to root it. The phone is basically bloatfree and fast out of the box.
I had to root in order to improve performance. In stock the phone lags, especially in games.
I only rooted to flash the kernel and for some other stuff like greenify and adaway, but Oxygen OS isn't as bad as some would say it is, bugs here and there but its clean enough.
OnePlux x 'S CPU is 8974AA,This is a waste of CPU power
I usually root my device on day one of my purchase. I have always used my devices with rooting / jailbreak and i find it much comfortable rather than a stock. With root you can throw out the bloatware and customize the phone as you need. So i prefer rooted phone always.
But with OP , stock ROM seems to be packing all the features needed without bloatware. So if you can live with popup adds in apps and chrome, OPX will provide you a great experience. And with OPX price, it is always worth getting it :good:

It is worth changing the device rom?

Hello everyone, I just bought this phone and I wonder if it shows a lot of difference when installing any of the roms that I have seen through this same forum.
The aspects that interest me to know are above all that such is the quality of the cameras in other roms, is there much difference in the battery? And how about the overall performance of the phone?
Finally I would like you to advise me what would be the best rom for this device and if there are links to other posts to root and install twrp (I am currently in stock 10, in case the procedures change)
Thanks for reading!

In my opinion, stock Android is really boring. You can't customize it or tweak it in any way. Evolution X has a better battery backup than stock ROM.
The camera performance in stock Android is fine. You can get even better quality with GCam. But, the oversaturated screen ruins the photography experience.
With evolution X, you can calibrate the screen. You can check out the values I use. ->https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a3/review/color-saturation-accuracy-t3962056/post82758721
In my opinion this greatly improves the overall phone experience.
I waited for a while before i flashed evox bcz I didn't want to miss on the ota updates and official support but those really suck and flashing a new rom is just much better and you don't loose anything really, for me everything works much better than stock rom, battery and performance are much better and the customisation is gold
I really liked the stock ROM, but for me the phone was randomly rebooting on Stock. This happened a few times while I was navigating while driving and it was infruiating so I made the switch. I'm quite happy with crDroid right now, since it has less bloat even than the stock ROM, but if you're not having any issues on stock, I'd suggest to stay on stock because there is a learning curve with flashing custom stuff on every phone, you will have to brick your phone a few times to properly install a custom ROM and that requires time + patience. For me it was worth it, since the phone doesn't randomly reboot anymore.
In my opinion, the best custom rom till now is MIUI 11 with Magisk installed. It's super fast + tons of great features. I'm sure we'll get MIUI 12 also, since its been released for CC9e. Give it a try and you'll love it.
Changing ROM is good, personally I bought this phone because of Stock Android with minimum bloatwares. However with stock Android comes a price of customizations. With a custom ROM, you can achieve all that and still control many features of your phone. I have changed ROM to EvolutionX and it's pretty good ROM which I am using as a daily driver. It got some bugs thought but so does stock Android 10 ROM.
