[Q] Does screencast recorder work with SGS3? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been thinking that i could get galaxy s3 but i want to know does screencast recorder (check it on google play store) work with that device? any1 have tried? And does it record 720p video 30fps. Some1 could try with free demo and upload the vid somewhere.

I've just bought Screencast.
I have a rooted s3 and stock ROM.
The video won't work - although the still screengrabs do work very well.
I posted a message to the developer and he said that it will work with the s3 but it needs tweaks - and to look here on XDA.
I don't see anything.
I notice that other people are saying that there are issues with the stock ROM as well.
With my s3, it starts recording but them stops very abruptly after a few seconds.
Every file if just 44bytes long and won't play.

This my experience with the demo as well. At the time I thought I probably just did something wrong...
Anyone know of any similar apps?

There are quite a few which do still screenshots - but it is mainly screencast and also ShootMe which can do video as well
ShootMe has not been updated to be compatible with the s£.
That leaves Screencast which the developer says is compatible but needs tweaking - but doesn't say what teaking it needs.

It does work sometimes and maybe it's coincidence but I found if you start recording and pull notification bar down while Screencast is still open then press home key to exit notification I found it always keeps recording.

Thanks for the tip.
I've tried what you have suggested and it doesn't work for me.
Still gives me heart to try a few more permutations.
---------- Post added at 03:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:00 PM ----------
Strange, ONce it has save its runt (44byte) file, the big recording button in the app goes to grey again - but the button the notification bar stays red as if it was still recording.
I really do wish that the developer would engage with this discussion. He's the one making money out of it, after all.

Looks like Shootme does work. The Market says it isn't compatible - but it is. You have to download it from some other source.
I got mine here http://rs20p1.rapidshare.com/cgi-bi...75D423511C1703F2A732A85F08C6E98E793B05368EB42
It certainly isn't as nicely featured as Screencast but it does video reasonably well
I would still like to get screencast working
---------- Post added at 05:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:46 PM ----------
Well don't ask me how - but Screencast has started working - and it is very very good.
I don't know if any of this had anything to do with it, but I downloaded Shootme and that worked.
Then I uninstalled Screencast and then downloaded and installed the demo version.
That didn't work either - exactly the same runt files as before.
I uninstalled it and then re-downloaded and installed the full version. The whole thing started working.
It really is very good. you can change the frame rate and have very smooth video. You can access the files from within the app. You can have mouse pointer appear to show your finger movements and key presses.
I hope that it doesn't stop again.

It's almost as if Screencast needs warming up before you can use it on S3, because after a few failed recordings it seems to sort itself out, so I'm guessing there's a settings or log file that gets rewritten in such a way that makes it work.

Well Screencast stopped working.
I lost root - don't ask me how.
I had to re-root and screencast wouldn't work and went back to its old buggy self.
Zero interest from the developer

is there another aplication that works??

I just checked my Screencast and it finally works. The trick is that U have to reinstall it.
My version is a paid one and I have similar issues as You, guys. I was very close to uninstall this app and to look for something different (actually & unfortunately we don't have any choice - I was looking in Google Play and I couldn't find anything), but decided to give it a one last shot
Btw, give it a few sec. when You start the app.

Any updates with Screencaster and the GS3? I still can't run it successfully.
Did you guys find any other option?

I've been trying to get screencast working on the sgs3.
finally getting some success using high setting within the app & also going into developer options in settings and turning on
disable hardware overlay and/or force GPU rendering. Im still playing about with the settings but its working so far.
Hope this helps.

[Q] ICS and Youtube app = not working?

Hi, after upgrading to ICS everything is working much better, except for the youtube app. Pretty much every time i click on a link it says "unfortunately, Youtube has stopped" especially when you use the search function...
Is this happening to anyone else, or can you offer a solution?
I've rebooted, cleared data etc....
Any ideas?
Mine does the same thing.

yea does that for me too. youtube app is unusable. until they fix it i will just use youtube.com
im also rooted and on ics.

Yup had this too. Not with all of them though. Some it shows some it doesn't.
Settings, Apps, ALL, YouTube... then force stop, and clear data! Mine was doing that until I cleared the app data and now it works fine!
If you're rooted, you can just use Titanium Backup and "WIPE DATA" on the YouTube app!
mine works fine without clearing any data
nup, mine still likes to troll me ...
mine seems to still be working fine. everything loads up alot faster.
YouTube does that on my phone running ICS too. It is an issue with ics and not the tablet.

Did a Force Stop/Clear Data, and so far so good, but I was only seeing "You Tube Stopped Working intermittently, so I cannot verify this as a valid fix until I test it some more. Seems promising, as quite a few app issues get fixed this way after updates. Sure beats the early TF101 days when you needed to jump though all kinds of hoops to fix YouTube and NetFlix
THe crashing happens only for HD videos , for other videos it works fine for me .
Even clearing data doesn't help with HD videos.
Even the glowball app crashes as soon as i open , this used to work fine with honeycomb.
---------- Post added at 06:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:21 PM ----------
Update: i was able to update the glowball app from market and that fixed it
tried to do the same for Youtube, but couldn't find the youtube app on the Market.

Hi there,
I am facing the same issue as yours from today evening. I am however facing it on the Galaxy Nexus running ICS 4.0.2. The YouTube app is constantly crashing, regardless of whether I play videos via the widget or via the actual app. I am also unable to see my videos from subscribed channels in the widget or the actual app. Only videos from Most Discussed or Recommended are being displayed.
The app was working fine until last evening and I have force stopped, cleared the cache and all saved data + restarted phone several times. No effect. It does not matter whether I am on 3G or WiFi.
Any suggestions?

Yeah, like for me. worked fine yesterday. Have no problem with the stability, just the sync don't work
And just now it's started to worked little. can now see my subscribe channels if I go under account.
on the start, main screen most discussed and recommend are showing. here is used to see the newest from my subscribe channels
Start to think that Google are doing maintenance or upgrade and there for its not working as it should.
Have we been able to watch live video with the app before???. and movie categories?? all this under the search button

Whats up people Iam loving my Prime now rooted with Vipermod. I started using the youtube app today and noticed non of the problems posted here but did see that when I scrolled the mouse across the screen it flickered at the top and that when I stream with bluetooth it takes while for it to load and keeps on reloading the video after a couple of seconds even if the video has loaded already. The second I take off bluetooth device video streams fine in HD with no reloading. Wanted to see if anyone else can test this out as well.
Yeah, mine started working again... i played with the HD settings and turned it on and off before it crashed.. and now its working. Hmmm

Are you talking about the Youtube app Hd settings and that when your turned off Hd the it would not have a problem streaming youtube. Dont think you were referring to my post but wanted to ask.
i just turned off hd in the bottom left corner of the video before it could load... then watched it for a bit... then turned it back on and it all started to work again, in both standard def and HD. I have no idea why it worked, but it seemed to
this, unfortunately, does not fix my problem. Ironic enough, everything else for this tablet WORKS so far.
Also, not sure if it's truly fact that ICS is not supported, or ASUS messed up somewhere... Either ways, here's the problem: (click the screenshot provided)
It clearly says on my other devices Youtube is already installed. However I went to Market on my TFP, and it won't show up. I go on site and the screenshot is what I get.
So, who exactly is at fault? Google or Asus?
Also, I had this bug since first ICS rollout.

[Q] Regarding the video player in browser on CM11

first off, i apologize if this doesn't belong here, but i cannot post and ask in the main thread for CM11 in development, as i don't post much, working more on the less you talk the more you listen mentality. However i cannot find anything regarding the integrated (i call it integrated as i cannot find any app which obviously related to it which i could get rid of), which is the video player when playing videos from other websites than youtube, it opens the video with this plug-in like video player.
Now in cm10.1 i could choose to open it with any video player i had installed, after updating to CM11 it just opens it up with that plug-in like player, which is really awkward and slow to use... and i want to get rid of it, however i failed to find anything regarding it on forums or google, not exactly sure what to look for, but did search for everything i could think of, there seemed to be a mention of this without an answer in the development thread though.
I checked settings in both default browser and chrome, opera mini just downloads the video file, which i don't want either. tried disabling java, basically dug through all the settings too... reset my app defaults etc.
If anyone has solution, or suggestions to solving this, please let me know as i spent few hours digging on it with no success :silly:
I am on CM11 nightlies, galaxy s3 i9300. And well any suggestions are appreciated... just want the selection for what to open video link with back.

I've tried that, did reset them, no effect. Was one of the first things i tried... just to be completely clear i want the dialogue to select app when encountering video files online flash or mp4 or whatever to choose what to open them with instead of the attached screenie...
In the same boat... using CM11.. I am trying to set 'Avia' as my default player (to play videos through chromecast)..
however couldn't find a way to set this.. and AOSP/Chrome/Dolphin browser starts to play videos (and flash videos) using internal video player inside the browser itself.. and somehow I couldn't find the default internal video player in the Settings -> Apps section. I even disabled 'Gallery' app.. any idea would be appreciated.

Screen Recording - With Root/Without Root

Considering the fact that remix os is based off of the work of android x86 project, has anybody been successfull in using a screen recording app? I have tried almost each and everyone and failed.
So, can anybody give me any pointers so as to have a decent screen recording app.
PS: SCR, the best recording app, has failed. So, please dont suggest me that. Works on my phone though, so I got that going for Me, which is nice.
You can try Telecine. I haven't tested it on Remix OS yet though.

Thanks for the reply though. Maybe, once we know all that does not work, maybe we would find the one that does.

Okay, so not being an a-hole or anything, but since I am, I will ask again, has anybody been able to use a screen recording app or anything of the sort? ANd please tell me something that you have tried and tested, not suggestions but give me the name of the app that you have personally tried on your remix installation.
I have even tried the adb method. Does not work.
abd shell screenrecord /sdcard/screenrecord.mp4

If the adb method does not work then it means that Remix does not have it baked in. I recall now that the same thing happened with DuoOS, apps didn't work but I didn't try the adb method.
adb works in Bluestacks based on Android 4.4. I have not tried the new one based on Android 5.

Jesus H. Christ! Has nobody even bothered to try screen recording or screen mirroring? Would anybody be kind enough for a solution or something? This is pretty ridiculous, the jide forum is infested with questions and nobody answers them and on xda too, nobody from their team even bothers to look into some crucial matters.
Guys, seriously, anything that can move this matter into the right direction will be appreciated.

It sadly does not. I am on the newest version and because my hdmi out does not work, I decided to try screen recording apps. Sadly non of them work, rooted or not.
Apps tried:
- AZ Screen Recorder (App doesn't open at all)
- ADV Screen Recorder (Does nothing at all no matter how many times I push record button)
- Lollipop Screen Recorder (After hitting the record button it thinks for about a minute or so and then freezes requiring force close)
- Mobizen: Screen Recorder (Force closes)
- Unlimited Screen Recorder (Won't start. "Error while setting up recording perameters. Try using different settings.")
- Smart Pixel (Force closes after about 5-10 seconds)
Like I said, I wouldn't need to use these apps if the hdmi out worked because then I could use my Elgato hd60... But not only does that not work, but neither do these apps and neither does rooting.
Anyone else got anything working, fix or suggestions on alternative ways to record?
You guys have to remember this project just went from alpha to beta, it isn't mature enough to do everything a regular Android device does, let's be patient and wait for features to come slowly. I also wanted to record the screen and had no luck but I'm hopeful this will be implemented in the future.
Well, it has been a jolly good time with remix. The jide team really has been working hard to push updates.
However, it pains me to say that a simple screen recording feature with inbuilt sound recording has still not here. Lollipop supports screen recording, why has that feature not here? I mean, I know I am being an unhelpful basterd, but seriously, how hard is it to just give that ability to the users?
Please, give us a barebones way of screen recording with sound. Really, its been a long time, and honestly, is it still on your to do list?
I've tried an alternative approach, to record streams. I have SlimTV working on my mobile, but it its not working on remix 102, the app runs and displays the stream fine, hitting 'record' button tries to record but fails immediately, have not tried on rooted 102.
On my mobile I extract stream from Kodi log, or use SlimTV as external player.
Would be interested if anyone has any similar ideas for recording TV etc.
In the latest updated if you open the included terminal app and cd /system/bin then type screenrecord "then_a_filename" it will record the screen.

As long as you have an intel cpu/gpu (gpu, haha!), you wont have any problems.
The biggest sh!t thingy is that why is a lollipop stable feature not present. I mean, lollipop has native screen recording feature, why is it not in the ROM.
I do understand that the way in which remix works on PC is different by the way in which it works on ARM phones. But seriously, dont you think that for error logging, screen recording in conjugation with screen shots are much bettter? That is the feature they should have worked before anything else.

Help: Camera unusable while navigation and music are running.

Not sure what to make of this, but it is a consistent and repeatable issue for my device. Please try it for yourself.
Launch Google maps driving navigation and audio from either Spotify or NPR One. Then try to launch the camera. The camera viewfinder stutters, the audio lags, it's almost unusable until I kill one of the three apps. In some cases the phone will kill navigation for me (or it will somehow die on it's own, not sure).
Very frustrating and not something I expect would be an issue for this high end device. Otherwise the phone is great but this is a use case I want to take advantage of and just can't.
Phone is stock. No root or any other mods.
Please open a regular thread.

You can open a regular thread here in the question section. The "Q&A format" you choose forces people to answer from a web browser.
This happened to me yesterday (wasn’t the first time...). I couldn’t figure out why the camera was so f——ed up until I read your thread. I had just driven somewhere using GMaps and streaming Spotify. I also use the Pixel 2 modded camera app and it does not have this lag issue after running these two apps, but still happy to know what the cause is for the next time!

Snapdragon S10/+/e owners please read: Possible bug with lag and stuttering

Guys, before you reply with any feedback, please read the following post and links in full. It would also help if you posted details of your device like the following, which is mine:

Summary: An intermittent stutter or lag (most notably during fullscreen 4K HDR playback, in my case) which only goes away when you activate certain screen recorder applications like Game Tools or AZ Screen Recorder.
Below is a list of posts that highlight this problem that I and a few others are experiencing. The common denominator here is the use of a screen recorder, which removes any present stutter or lag.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/help/lag-stutter-overall-choppy-t3914381
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/btwfbl/anyone_experiencing_stuttering_or_frame_drops_on/
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b79cw3/is_snapdragon_really_that_much_worse_than_exynos/
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b4nftn/snapdragon_s10_laggy_on_4k_youtube_playback/ (video evidence of problem)
The following two are from myself. My problem is that all 4K HDR content (could extend to other formats also but I need to do more testing) is stuttering or dropping frames. Screen recorder on and boom - it's smooth.
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/ch172q/snapdragon_owners_does_this_type_of_video_play/
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/help/sm-g9750-video-playback-throttled-t3950757
The lag returns as soon as you deactivate screen recording, which suggests that this is either a bug with the CPU or GPU not being optimized or boosting its frequencies properly, leading to these stutters.
I've put Snapdragon in the title as these posts all appear to be from Snapdragon owners, whether it's the US or HK variant. I don't recall ever having this issue as a last generation S9 Exynos owner. If you are an S10/+/e Exynos owner and encountering this issue, you could still try using your phone normally, with a screen recorder active and then without, to see if there is any performance gain (as crazy as it sounds, it might actually make a difference).
Below is a test I'm using to demonstrate this problem. It involves installing apps (namely YouTube Vanced and either one of two screen recorders I've tested it with), so it's not the most convenient. If I find a better method, I will update the post accordingly.
You will need YouTube Vanced. I'm suggesting Vanced because the original YouTube app doesn't let you view at 4K resolution.
Firstly, open Vanced and tap the account icon in the upper right. Go to settings, Vanced settings, Video settings and then toggle Resolution Checks to ON. Refresh and restart the app.
Now open Game Launcher, tap the three dots in the upper right > Add apps and add YouTube Vanced to the list. We're doing this for the screen recording function which I'll mention later.
Note: if you don't have Game Launcher or Game Tools, you can try AZ Screen Recorder as an alternative. Nice Shot does not work.
Once that's done, here's a 4K 60fps clip for you to try. It should be easier to perceive any hiccups with the higher frame rate. Please set the resolution to 2160p (tap the three dots in the upper right) and watch in fullscreen / landscape orientation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXb3EKWsInQ
Panning shots work best. For reference, see points 0:19, 0:46, 1:48, 2:14, 2:42, 3:04, 4:11 and 4:41 in the video. Does it look like it's stuttering or dropping frames intermittently?.
Now, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to show the navigation bar (you need the navigation bar enabled to use the recording function) and tap on Game Tools, which is the leftmost button. Tap Record.
While the screen is recording, are the stutters now gone? To my eyes, the video plays back perfectly while the recorder is active.

If you are not experiencing any such issues with your device, then congratulations, you have passed the test! Thanks for taking some of your time to provide valuable feedback :good:
Any non-constructive comments will be ignored and reported.
Yeah my S10 is crazy laggy, way laggier than my old S9+ ever was.
I still have it but I got a OnePlus 7 Pro instead of it, absolutely zero regrets. I'll try what you suggested, my lag also didn't go away after a factory reset. I'll reply again with the results.
---------- Post added at 02:10 ---------- Previous post was at 02:05 ----------
So my lag actually got way worse with screen recording, very stutter and no animations were smooth at all. The phone is a fresh install and I don't have a MicroSD card in it either.
Nope, no lag here and I would recognize it if I had it. I have to run a screen recorder from time to time and I see no difference with or without it. I have also never used One UI after the first 5 minutes of trying it. I also don't see enough people complaining to say this is a widespread problem.

Well that sucks, sorry to hear. Screen recording is the only fix from what I've found (if you could even call it a fix). I'm looking at the OP7P as a possible replacement, I don't think I can wait for an update that may or may not solve the problem.
Could I ask what was lagging specifically? Was it just the UI or video, or just everything in general?

Nope, no lag here and I would recognize it if I had it. I have to run a screen recorder from time to time and I see no difference with or without it. I have also never used One UI after the first 5 minutes of trying it. I also don't see enough people complaining to say this is a widespread problem.

It's not widespread, no, but I'm having it and so are a few other people. I only use Nova but One UI was no different so the launcher is not to blame, it's more likely an optimization issue that Samsung borked.
Should probably mention that I have the HK S10+, I don't know if it's particular to this model but the links in OP don't seem to suggest so.

Video playback is just fine, everything else is laggy. UI is a stuttery mess.
My S10 is not laggy, I don't know what others are seeing. I come from S7 Edge and S9, so I know how they feel.
Maybe we need to be more specific about our models when we talk. Mine is SM-G973U1 (unlocked US).
Standard UI, apps from the Google store only, developer mode active (for playing with Bluetooth codecs), build number G973U1UES1ASDB.

You're right. I'll include these details in the OP along with a small test to demonstrate what I'm experiencing. Also tried simplifying the post so that it's a little less sensationalist, seems to have annoyed the hell out of some people. Thanks for the advice!
This is mine by the way:
Model: SM-G9750 (Hong Kong S10+)
Build number: G9750ZHU1ASF1
Completely stock, no settings changed
Only YouTube Vanced installed (for testing purposes)

edit: updated OP
***UPDATE*** Okay now I've just encountered the strangest thing: When watching the video, if I keep my finger touching the screen (as in held down anywhere), the stutter goes away! The moment I lift my finger, it gets laggy again. Wtf is going on?
Before anyone asks, I'm caseless and have tried the Accidental touch protection and sensitivity options, those don't seem to do anything. Anyone able to explain what the real issue might be here?
Found a solution for me at reddit /r/galaxys10/comments/bgka23/lag_and_stuttering/
In short, you have to reboot after using DeX
