First, let me say I searched threads and forums looking for someone who had same problem and could not find any posting similar. The only one I found that similar was about the APN. I created a new APN using the settings I found in that thread, but it has not helped at all.
Got a pop-up/update message on phone yesterday about upgrading to ICS. I was running a stock HTC Amaze - not rooted - on Simple Mobile, and it was working great.
Upgraded phone to ICS OTA and love the new interface but having two problems, even after setting up the phone to run on the Simple network.
1. Phone is slow and will only run/display 2G whereas it used to be fast and say 4G.
2. Wifi tethering seems to be gone as it will not allow a tethered device to go to the page requested. (I have found threads about how to address this issue, so it is not a big concern like to 2g/4g speed issue.)
3. My android smiles are gone now......all I have are normal smiles. :-(
Any suggestions on what to do would be GREATLY appreciated.....
under mobile network settings, set your network mode to wcdma only.
I don't know much about the tethering issue, been on custom roms for a while, but apparently its a paid feature now. unlock your phone and install a custom rom, and you wont have that issue anymore
Could be a bad flash, though it doesn't really sound so, just sounds like they restricted a few things on other networks.
Fixed and working great....thanks sent to both who posted replies!!!!
Glad to see you got it fixed. If you don't get MMS, make sure you change your APN to the Simple Mobile APN. T-Mobile and Simple Mobile has slightly different APN settings.

Yesterday, I successfully updated to android 2.1. I have confirmed that the APN information is correct and that there is sufficient network coverage. I have activated data in the settings - yet I cannot seem to get a data connection. Unless I activate WIFI, neither facebook nor mail will update, and I also cannot open websites in several browsers (opera, fennec, standard browser, dolphin).
I also don't get an icon for 3g or hsdpa connection.
Anyone having the same problem? Or even better... a solution?
Best,
-Mike

I would say it's your carriers networks are down. I had a similar problem but the 3G symbol was there and it just would download anything. I then disabled juice defender and it works perfectly.
If you are running the nordic kit this seems to be a fairly common problem. One of the guys over at phandroid fixed this by going to the SIM Toolkit and downloading settings, but I did not have this option. I was able to get it working temporarily by fiddling with the APN settings, but then like you it just failed to work any more.
I have flashed back to 1.6 and am now going to update with generic uk firmware.
So - I tried the Sony Ericsson option in the settings (topmost menu entry) to automatically download settings, I tried setting them manually, I tried auto-configuring via the apn-options... nothing worked...
then, suddenly, without having changed anything - I get a 3G signal. Seems to have sorted itself out for whatever reason. Will update in case anything changes.

Worked for me.
Alright, the issue I'm having is that the Mobile Hotspot will not stay on with PiCrust. It starts up fine but a few seconds later it drops 3G connectivity all together and I have to reboot to get data back. I've tried with wifi on and off before using.
The question I have is about the "entitlement" mod used for tethering. I have read online that the reason the iPhone was able to be detected was because the methods were using an alternate APN so all AT&T had to do was cross reference those accounts to see if they were paying for tethering. So my question is: Does the entitlement mod use the same APN for data and tethering?? If so, I would think this would answer most people's questions about the validity of the method. I know no one has confirmed that AT&T has detected this method but it is still relatively new.
EDIT:
I have been doing some more research and I have noticed some people are having issues with the new android market. Is this common among people using the new market?
Hey, everyone. Using your AMAZING n00b guide and overall lurking of this website for several months since January I've done quite a few awesome things with this phone. Currently I am running Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0-Ba2tF-Olympus (any further information how I got there can be provided if necessary). I'm having a slight issue though. I've noticed that sometimes I'll randomly have no data or cellular service what-so-ever. To gain access to data and cellular service at that point I will then have to restart the phone, wait for it to boot, turn on WiFi, wait for that to connect, use an application like Browser or Facebook to test connectivity, if data transmits then I'm good, then AND ONLY after I go through all that can I disable WiFi and connect through regular data and cellular channels. I was wondering if this has happened to any of you and if anyone had any idea on how to fix it?
If you need clarification I'd be more than happy to try and sort my explanation out for you.
Thank you all in advance and I hope to hear from you soon!
Hello,
Did your APN settings are good ?
You can found it there : Setting / networks / Mobile Networks / Access Point Name.
Where are you from, what is your carrier ?
Regards.
I am thinking you need to flash a new radio.
I have a rooted / unlocked i717 that I recently flashed to the T-Mobile rom and ICS Blaze modem outlined in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30335211
Everything went fine and overall I've been happy except for my phone works a little slower and my battery discharges slightly faster. I noticed today however that I cannot use my phone as a hotspot with the Wi-Fi hotspot tool enabled nor FoxFi. I can see the access point, it will ask for a key, but never connect. When I was using stock AT&T GB before (on T-Mobile as well), I was always successful with FoxFi. It worked well.
Is this an issue with using a T-Mobile rom on my i717? Should I change my rom to the AT&T official ICS and then flash the blaze modem or is it time to visit a custom rom? I use my phone heavily for work, so I don't want to experiment with anything JB at this time. I need something rock steady. I wanted to add that I needed to move from the stock GB because I was getting a annoying reboot issue monthly that made me reset/reload the phone each time. Thanks!

Enter that code into the dialer and turn off "wifi sleep"...
It may just fix your issue ..g

Nope, no luck there. I did notice that under FoxFI, the SSID no longer appeared to my laptop after entering that code. I have noticed that the T-Mobile Tethering and Portable Hotspot tool that is part of the rom does allow my laptop to connect to it but I don't get an IP address. I've been searching around and I have yet to find anyone with a similar issue. I'd hate to go back to GB at this point, but I may have to this weekend if there is no answer as I have a business trip next week
Thanks for your help though!
I did some more reading with some similar issues with the GSII and read about a app called "Wireless Tether for Root Users".

It works great so far. I am relieved.
Hey, so I have a Samsung Galaxy S running CyanogenMod 9.
I want to test if my 3g is actually working or not. I used to use the 3G internet on the phone until I changed plan without mobile internet and now I've changed back. The problem is there is no 3G connection now.
I've been onto my network's forums and followed their instructions for setting up APN's etc. and the settings are perfect (even though I never changed them since the last time it worked)
So my question is that is there some way to test if your 3G hardware is actually functioning?
Bump. Does anyone know anything to test if your 3G h/w is working?
Bump. Anyone?
