Overview: We have developed an app that allows customers check in using an NFC enabled card with a stationary Nexus S. The app sit ready to read a card, when a card is tapped, the app reads the unique ID for the NFC card.
Problem: The challenge we have run into, is that the Nexus S locks up after scanning 50 to 100 tags. The app continues to function, and so does android, however neither our app, or the native app within android will read a tag. It is as though the scanner has been disabled. I have tested it using 4 different Nexus S devices running Android 2.3.6.
Debugging: The only solution I have been able to find is to either: - power the nexus s off and then power it back on - disable NFC and then re-enable it through Setting --> Wireless & network settings --> NFC
If either of those are done, the scanner works again and app continues to work as normal until it locks up again after 70 or so scans.
Any idea how to fix this bug, or work around the issue?
Update: it appears as though this is not just with our app, testing the "Tags" native app that comes with the Nexus S also has this issue.
Do you see any output in logcat relevant to NFC?
There are multiple apps in the market for this, but this is one of the first I've tried and so far it works very well, and the dev has a thread here on XDA and does a good job with support there.
Basically it reads any NFC tag and from that ID you can do multiple different types of tasks within the app, or you can call Tasker tasks to do things. The possibilities are nearly unless, and you don't even have to write a NFC tag to do it. His examples include using an old ski pass or hotel card.
I'm currently supplimenting my Tasker time or GPS based contexts with ReTag for Bed, Car, and Work modes. Simple to set up, still playing with more options. I have 10 MiFair 1k tags to play with, but any NFC tag will do.
See his thread here for specifics, and any issues anyone finds, but otherwise, discuss here! He has threads in several forums, but he prefers the "main" thread be the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477138

Anyone know if a hard shell case would interfere with the back cover NFC antenna?

Not too likely, might decrease the range a bit. A metal back I would assume would completely stop NFC from working, but I've used several TPU cases, and one case with a harder plastic back, and no problems with NFC with any of them. None of them are "indestructible" otterbox type cases (thick plastic) however.

This one works fine with NFC on my Note.
I've been seeing videos of NFC tags and was wanting to know what is the real benefit from using them ? Some people turn on WiFi, Bluetooth, brightness and so on by swiping a tag on the back of the phone. I can see a real use for payments, can anyone shed some light on the tags . I've seached the net but was wanting to get you guys opinions on tags.

There's a lot you can do with NFC but really not much use right now. There are apps that allow you to program a tag with what ever info you want, there are apps that use NFC to launch tasks like set an alarm, switch profiles etc. Right now I'm helping a friend promote his group and at are events he has me and his promoter give out NFC bracelets that have his info and a link to a mobile site with free music and concert info. If you have a bracelet already we can also keep track of the concerts you have been to and he picks a few of the fans who come to multiple concerts and let them back stage to hang with his band. Pretty cool stuff
The tags are a neat gimmick and I use several. I have one in my car that I swipe when I get in and it turns off wifi, turns on bluetooth, and resets my volumes for car use. When I get home, I have swipe it again and it turns off bluetooth, turns on wifi, and resets my volumes for home use. I also put a tag on my Aircrew ID, so I can swipe my ID on my phone and enable or disable airplane mode. Now I could do all this manually, but a swipe of the NFC tag takes less than a second. Plus my employer requires my phone to be password locked but I can swipe a tag and execute these functions without unlocking my phone. Lastly, it is pretty cool to show off the capabilities of your phone in front of an IPhone geek.

I have one that users can tap and it automatically connects their phone to my protected wifi network. It gives them everything needed to log on.
I have another in my nightstand that sets my alarm when I place my phone on my nightstand at night.
Finally, I have one under my lightswitch as I leave that turns on/off wifi
I actually just ordered a couple last night, I can't wait to get them. They threw in a free keychain too, which is cool cause I'll probably use it as my "car mode" invoker. The guest WiFi tag is a cool idea, I might have to give that a shot.
+1 on impressing your iFriends , it's hard to deny how cool the technology is...

I have a car mount that can fit a wireless charger and my phone. I'm looking to put nfc tag on the charger or near it so my phone detects and realizes its in the car and kicks off a script which launches pandora, enables blue tooth, enables location services, disables wifi, and launches my car dock app and/or google search so I can say "navigate to the beverage center" thats all for now. another thing I want to attempt is if it location senses i'm home it asks me if I want to shut off my wifi thermost and if it senses I'm away it asks me if I want to turn it on. I can put two nfc tags on my dash, one for turning heat on and the other for off but that would require me to remember. lol

autovice and takser if the phone is plugged in have the nfc tag also trigger autocontinuos voice and use that for voice commands
Hello,
I am working in our company with CAT S40. We have 10 of this devices and all show the same behaviour:
1. I turn on the NFC option to read NFC tags.
2. I Start an app which can read NFC tags.
3. I am reading with the app several tags
4. I make a power off of the CAT S40 and turn it then on again (or make a restart)
5. I am starting again the NFC app and I can not read any NFC tags anymore
6. I go to the setting and checking the NFC settings. The NFC setting is set to ON.
7. I turn OFF the NFC settings and then turn them ON again
8. Now I switch back to the NFC reading app and now it is possible to read tags
Has anybody experience with this behaviour and how can I solve this issue?
