Hi,
I've noticed that there seem to be 4 different versions of the SGS3: i9300, i747, i535, and T999. I assume that since they have different hardware, they would require different firmware, and thus, different ROMS. Would I be correct in that assumption? If so, where would be the best source of i747 custom ROMs and Kernels? I am only able to find customizations to the international version.
Please let me know if I have missed something.
Thanks in advance
In the US forums.

You got it weird to me that some forums have model numbers and others don't.

Hello all, now that Sprint has confirmed the release date for their version of this awesome device, I'm wondering if there'll be a separate forum for it, or will this be it?
Any clue? I tried searching for the device on xda site, but it isn't listed yet.
Because it's not even out yet, i would bet there's enough differences with the hardware that international sgs2 roms won't work as it's, and modems defiantly won't

Exactly. That's why I'm thinking a new forum section may get added specifically for it and (maybe) other US variants.
All I need to know is am I ok with stock international Rom on Art&T
No.

What should I do to get it on the AT&T network?
I have already purchased the phone and the sim card from AT&T is already on its way here.
I have tried searching but I only find threads on rooting and flash custom roms but I havent found one that states which rom would work for International phone on ATT's network
Any help would be appreciated. Cause I am now worried I bought a $700 paper weight I cant use.

The international one WILL work on at&t, I think the op was kind of misleading.
It seems slim thought you were asking if international roms will work on US S3.
Tbh I thought the same.
Any rom in the development section here will work on your phone. No problem.
Just as long as its the international model, GT-I9300.

My bad. Yeah, it's one of those confusing sentences. If you have I9300 then whatever is in this board will work.

Sorry for the poorly phrased sentence, I am a product of NYC public school system. And thanks to you both for your replies.
Are the roms like cm10 and others compatible with the korean gs3 as they have the same hardware?
Apparently most i9300 roms work on the 3g model although you need to flash a different kernel.
Would refer to the korean s3 thread on this forum.

The guy who first replied to your question's right.. idk why u had to answer: ????'
Go to the Korean s3 thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749214 i am pretty sure that will help you become a flashaholic as i had the korean version of s3: shw-m440s, i used to convert a lot of kernels for that model.
Cheers!

My understanding is that on the I777 the modem and the kernel are combined in one partition. Although I've installed several different roms so presumably different kernels, my modem has stayed the same: I777UCKH7
Is there an advantage to trying different modems? How would I do it?

Yes, and there's already a thread in the development section addressing all of your questions.

That thread is 3 years long and I apparently didn't read enough of it. Had an unfortunate experience. Oh well. Back to the way it was before - minus several weeks due to a bad backup.

Can't believe you have flashed several roms and the modem hasn't changed. Most of the newer roms I have flashed have included the latest ucmd8 modem.

If he's been flashing AOSP-based roms they won't change the modem, so it's conceivable he's had the same modem across different flashes.

I was on supernexus for a while now I'm on carbon. My modem has always remained the same. That, however, is currently the least of my problems.

I may have misunderstood what I read. I thought it meant the modem was always linked to the kernel so it can't be flashed separately. Now I'm just plain confused so don't mind me. ;p

You can flash them separately because they aren't in the same partition.

I'm confused about why you'd pick one over the other. Are you looking for newer/faster? The best one for where you live? The one that runs best with your Rom? I had a lot of problems after I tried to flash the ucmd8 - May have been coincidental but either way the modem didn't work.

Can someone direct me to information about modems? The development thread referenced above lists a number of modems, but doesn't tell anything about them. Is one better than another? Is the latest one always the best one? The development thread used to have a map, but it has been removed. Are some modems better in some areas than others? I am trying to find the one in my area (central California) that has be best reception in a limited coverage area.
I am running the latest version of AOKP dated 6/24/13 and the baseband version (modem?) is i777UCKH7.

You answered your own question right there - flash them all and give each one about a day to see how your reception is. The map you're talking about was removed ages ago because it became corrupted.
In the end no one can tell you which one is better for you; just because it's the latest modem doesn't mean anything at all, in terms of reception/quality.

Thanks. It sounds like there is no reason to start playing around with modems unless you are actually having reception issues and then it's totally trial and error. My modem (UCKH7) seems ok here (southern CA) so if it ain't broke...

I hope this question is not a stupid one...
I want to say that I tried searching and all guides come either outdated with broken links or just designed for a different model.
I have a Galaxy Note SGH-i717R which is a canadian version. I cannot find a current working rooting method that will guide me through installing a CWM or TWRP recovery plus let me flash CM or any other KitKat based ROM.
I have downloaded:
CWM-TOUCH-i717-6043.zip but I know I can't install it until I root. But all rooting guides are outdated and do not work.
I have a good idea on how to root and install custom roms, I've done it on various phones including on my Nexus 5 and 7.
Can anyone give me a link or a quick breakdown of what I need?
I can't stress enough that this is a SGH-i717R not SGH-i717, i have a Canadian Version.
Thanks in advance!

With all the different variants of this device, no two are as similar. There have been many to flash the US version to Canadian model. I see no harm, but it is your device. Have you read the Super Everything thread?

Kingoapp.com. The i717 is not on the device list but it works....I have used it many times when I have screwed up my phone testing and had to go back to stock. What os are you on now. ICS or Gingerbread?

I think i've read that thread too and i think most of it did not apply to the R version of thsi phone. Also someone was mentioning that the phone since it is a canadian variant..will reload the stock ROM back on under reboot. Is this true?

Its running 4.1.2
And its not i717 but i717R.... something about the Canadian R variant make its almost impossible to flash with AT&T versions of the ROMs. OR I am not reading the threads correctly.

It's been so long since ICS, I'm not sure if you have to flash JB before going to KK or not. Look for any thread with JamieD81 on it. He's from Canada so his should work.

Its not really a big deal weather i get CM on this phone or not, but since I have it as a spare phone next to my Nexus 5, I really want something more modern running on it.
Again, thanks for help.
