"In many cases users of uncertified devices have been able to download the Flash Player from the Google Play Store, and in most cases it worked. However, with Android 4.1 this is no longer going to be the case, as we have not continued developing and testing Flash Player for this new version of Android and its available browser options. "

Looking ahead, Adobe will be blocking Flash runtime downloads. “Beginning August 15th we will use the configuration settings in the Google Play Store to limit continued access to Flash Player updates to only those devices that have Flash Player already installed. Devices that do not have Flash Player already installed are increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store after August 15th.”

While I agree that HTML 5 is strictly better, that does not mean that all the creators with hundreds of hours of experience in Flash are simply going to switch. Even with the dominance of the iPad in the tablet market and the popularity of the iPhone there is still tons of content being developed in flash. Here's hoping that android dropping Flash support will be the kick in the pants the internet community needs to get moving onto the HTML5 bandwagon.
This seems to imply that it's not just Google making the decision and Adobe is on board. Even so, I worry that manufacturers are still going to bundle it with devices in an attempt to differentiate from the iPhone.
Of course, this wont matter if Jellybean faces the same dismal adoption rate Ice Cream Sandwich did, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.
Posted this last night in the Original JB thread. Even though will never be supported with 4.1 I almost guarantee it will work fine if installing manually be who knows.

Look on Adobe's website... It all makes sense as to why they aren't due to past comments made by Adobe. Now what stinks is the extinction of New installations of Flash on ANY Android OS after August 15th but devices that already have it are allowed to keep it. Oh well, just make sure you install manually after getting JB. I am almost positive it will work due to sane source code and only very minor differences in newer revision of Android OS

Companies that fail to adopt technology are pretty doomed to fail in general.
What's better about html 5? Usually if something is so great people and/or businesses would want to use it. In this case it seems like it is kind of being forced on people.
Another way around it which I'm pretty sure will happen is that when Devs make their custom ROMS, they'll find a way to bake in flash so it won't be an issue. But since our phones came with it, I'm not worried in the least
As a SysAdmin view THANK GOD! they are getting rid of it. Flash is clumsy and very vulnerable, I think that they should focus (and everyone else) in HTML5 and other technology that will deliver better results without the burden of hogging resources and killing security.
Don't get me wrong, its a great technology and it ushered us to an era of great content but its about time we move on.

It's not that HTML5 is better than flash; there are arguments going both ways. The reason why *most* people like HTML5 is because it does not require a special plugin to be downloaded in order to view the specialized content; your browser does all the work necessary. In order to view flash content, you MUST download the Adobe Flash Player plugin. This is how why Steve Jobs chose not to go with Flash (aside from his personal vendetta that he thinks Adobe stole Flash from him); when asked why he refused to use flash, he said that HTML5 can handle anything flash can and more.

So in reality, what does that mean for the end user? There are still a lot of sites I can visit and run video on my Flyer, but not on my iPhone. Just because Adobe is migrating to HTML5 and Air, does that mean all of these sites are going to convert their pages or just leave them sitting out there as abandoned orphans?
Flash will continue in use for a good long time, but Adobe will not be doing any further development or updates. HTML5 will become the standard for webpage browser video.

Adoption of HTML5 was inevitable as all the browsers started to support it. Flash was a great gap filler and now its time is past. Adobe is not going to support it if its not going to make money for them.

Depends on all the trojan writers. 99% of all their stuff is running through flash and pdf, so I guess they'll have to update.
Flash apps will be around for a while then slowly die out (like Netflix) as everything transitions to HTML5 which will be intrinsically supported by all browsers.

This!!! Steve Jobs or not, even we we ask app devs, Flash is a big battery and RAM hog. May take a few weeks for some to get over it but we'll survive. I'd say, good riddance.
Adobe has been announcing the end of mobile Flash since before ICS, so it really should not have come as a surprise to anyone.
Everyone who has flash installed will continue to get security updates for some time so it's not "puff - gone" but in the second stage of being gradually phased out.
You can take a look at Skyfire for mobile videos on flash

I disagree.
When Apple decided to not include Flash, HTML5 technology was not even on the horizon and most browsers were completely unable to directly display videos or use Javascript with any decent performance.
Due to various efforts -some based on Apple's refusal to include Flash- HTML5 is now ready for mass-consumption.
However two points remain:
- legacy flash Applications are now officially dead for Android too - this includes Flash Games and Flash Videos.
- HTML5 is far harder to develop for and due to various extensions neither really much more secure nor better at battery-saving.
I restored adobe flash 11 from a back up from my oldold phone.. Works fine.. On phone now can't attach but if you want it I can upload when I get to a computer.

Yes, installing it from APK will work fine. Make sure you'll use e.g. Titanium's "fix market link" feature so you keep getting important security updates.
Jellybean also supports Flash btw, you just have to manually install it =)
I had a trial with the S4 but returned it due to my eyes hating the display compared to my old Samsung Infuse super clear, bright display. I had disabled every bit of bloatware and successfully installed Adobe flash player, and could play flash videos on sites through certain browsers (Boat and Dolphin). I must be able to watch flash American Sign Language videos so I would like to know of others experiences with the HTC One worked well, or not, for flash videos after installing flash player as I had on the S4.
Thanks...

Yes, that is what the S4 stock browser supposedly did also but in reality it did not. That's why I'm wanting to know of users real life experiences playing various videos on different web pages before I buy the ONE. The display of the ONE is so far superior to the S4!

Thank you... I just spent the day trying to find a live HTC One in the 'big' city area of Vermont. There were plenty of S4, but only mock-ups of the ONE. Best Buy, Walmart and several AT&T stores only had the fakes.... and the AT&T corporate store was beyond rude and ignorant!
The most important videos need my login info. On the following page there is a video on the top right side and also the lower right side, http://www.lifeprint.com/that that would be a good start.
Another site is http://www.signingsavvy.com/browse.php
Type a simple word in the search box and a video should come up to play.
That would be a big help. Thanks...

Unfortunately, most of the American Sign Language sites, especially those with thousands of word sign videos. ASL is completely visual, no voice. An ASL site programmer I know said it's been an absolute nightmare since the new phones and tablets have been phasing out flash and there are so many different platforms dealing with it differently.

Couldn't test the second site, as it says a login is required to search.
Thanks for trying...

I know Lifeprint.com is trying, but they and many of the other sites have such a massive amount of video files from decades of individual vocabulary word signs, etc. It is a major job that has not gone smoothly. Think of changing format of each word in an unabridged dictionary (visual only). On each and every ASL site I use there are people writing in daily about their devices not able to play the videos... Mac, Windows, IOS, Android, and all of the individual variables from before and after the flash/HTML5 upheaval. Most of these people are not particularly cyber-tech savvy and just need to be able to watch the videos to learn ASL. I have severe hearing loss and can not use hearing aids so I have been trying to learn sign for several years. In the beginning the issues were only my own brain not being on board to learn ASL easily,.... now I am beyond frustrated with the videos and sites I depend on almost every day not working as they should.
My Infuse is in the dark ages (Froyo) with flash, but I can play most of the videos and use the ASL sites. When I had the trial with the S4, I could watch some of the videos and sites after installing flash player and a specific version of Dolphin and Boat browsers. They had many quirks though.... a video would show up but be unresponsive to touch, or the video show would play and act fine but not be able to be zoomed so it would be too tiny to see clearly. Before I had installed Flash Player none of the sites worked at all. My friend has an Iphone and Ipad and is often unable to use the ASL sites and videos. Some sites I have given up with but some I must be able to use.
Most youtube videos will play on the new phones. It's the non-youtube videos that I need to be able to watch and interact with.
AT&T had my returned S4 sitting lost somewhere in their warehouse until I had a chat and they found it. Now I am waiting for them to process and say I am able to update. I also keep hoping that HTC quality control will be improve and the Ones will come through with fewer issues. My old Infuse seems to be working better since they reactivated it with a new sim so maybe I will just wait a bit longer rather than adding another possible $36 return fee.
I use Maxthon browser to play flash websites. You can set it up to play flash always when you go to settings. It's free on play store.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, Minicoop. I had tried Maxthon browser a few times on my Infuse, my Galaxy Tab 8.9, and the S4 trial. It did not handle the specific videos I need to play well at all. I have really seen that since html5 has become the norm, all browsers that supposedly play flash websites do not play the videos I need to watch without issues or at all.
Just a confirmation about not using tools to root.

I'm a fellow Nexus 10 owner. I love my device, but I'm a bit tired of facing applications that are low-resolution and unoptimized for the incredible display we have on the Nexus 10. Even tablet-optimized apps are lacking. Aren't you frustrated? Hence, I thought we could do something about it as a community.
Which is the purpose of this thread!
Here's how it will work. This first post will serve as a compilation of all the petitions made to any and all developers to optimize their applications for tablets, and also the Nexus 10's display. Any subsequent posts in this thread shall be for petition requests and discussion, which I will personally put together and post up to the petition site being used for this purpose (Care2 as of this thread's posting). I will then add a direct link to that petition to this thread, sorted by category. Feel free to make any suggestions or to criticize! I will also start us off with a petition I have already created myself: to the developers of the Bloons TD series of games, Ninja Kiwi.
I'll try to keep things simple! Keep on topic, please, and try your best to sign each and every petition. Its the only way we'll be able to actually push developers to optimize their applications for tablets like ours! So, without further ado, let us begin!

This is likely Google's job, not ours. In any event, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are three that immediately spring to mind. Not because they are low resolution -- not sure what you mean there -- but because the layouts are so clearly designed for smaller screens. I shouldn't have to opt for Friendcaster, Tabstagram, and Plume.

No, it's the app devs job. The point of this is to show them that there is a need for this to be done by enough of their user base to merit the work hours it will take them to implement it. What they don't know ends up hurting us. It is actually an excellent idea.
A dedicated Facebook app should be a priority. My mate has an iPad and I found myself looking longingly at the sickness of the dedicated app. Something needs to be done to put a stop to this sick perversion!

You'll excuse me if I seem overly cynical about this. I used to be a BlackBerry user. Well over two years ago, some folks on Crackberry launched a campaign to bombard Reid Hastings, the president of Netflix, with email to get Netflix on the BlackBerry platform (the OS 6 devices like the Torch had then fairly recently come out). If you are familiar with Crackberry, you know that they are a rabid, fanatical horde. Nothing happened. Then came the petitions -- change.org and the like. They are still going on more than two years plus later, and despite the fact that BlackBerry now has quite decent phones and a decent OS in BB10, there is still no Netflix on the platform.
EDIT: Holy! I already have 4 signatures for Facebook on Android Tablets and I haven't even posted it anywhere yet! That shows something.

I think your points make sense, but they aren't a valid reason really to cause Netflix to develop for BB10. The marketshare simply isn't there.
With Android, however, the market has shown that it is a valid platform (and I hate to say that as if it was an option - c'mon. ANDROID IS AWESOME! ); it makes sense for them to update, and it only helps us out. We need to show them that we actually CARE. If they understand that, then they will update for us without question. If they have any business sense, that is.
Same with BB10 (which is, quite frankly, a very nice OS - it even has NFC Beaming support between BB and Android devices). If they had the market AND Crackberry screaming like it was/is, they would get a proper app quite quickly.
This deserved a quick update post: the petitions for Facebook and Instagram are now online. Facebook already has a few votes!

BB's problem is definitely rooted in market share, something that Android in general obviously has no problem with. But the numbers dwindle considerably when you're talking about Android tablet market share, and then on top of that, you've got to consider how many Android tablet users really care that there are some apps that are just scaled up phone versions. Apple cared enough to do something about it -- remember that was one of the criticisms of the first iPad, i.e., that it seemed just like a oversized iPod. Google has not been responsive on this front (nor on others for that matter).
Anyway, I don't want to discourage anyone, so have at it.

Don't worry, you're not discouraging (me, at least).
Android Tablet market share has been steadily on the rise - in fact, it rivals the iPad. According to many statistics, they are slated to pass (if they have not already) Apple devices in tablet market share by the 3rd quarter. I listed 3 (or 4?) links in all of the petitions.
As for Google, they have been doing a great job lately. They added dedicated tablet sections to Google Play, and have been pushing developers to adhere to the guidelines constantly. I say keep up that pressure!

Thanks! We need more people like you here. Keep it up!
As for everyone else, keep an eye out for new petitions; and, most importantly of all:
SIGN THEM!!!!
We have hundreds of views on this thread, yet most people don't seem to want to take 60 seconds and sign the petitions, oddly enough. And this is a Nexus 10 forum. Keep it up, anyway! We CAN do this with enough time.

One of these days I plan to actually try to learn some Android development; I'll be sure to make whatever apps I make optimized for the N10 though :good:
Hi everyone,
This is a post to existing ROM developers. A childhood dream of mine has always been to create a technology that makes any type of connected device intelligent in a general way. This is a goal that is now real in version 1.0 and is currently being integrated into an automation app.
You can see a CONCEPT video here (though, because Engadget never talked to me, the entire article is based on assumptions from the author. There is an awesome data privacy/control model in place and the tech doesn't "think" for you lol):
Doesn't look like I'm senior enough to post a link. So Google "Kimera Systems Engagdet" and the video will be the first result
And a recent tech meetup presentation with quick demo here (what tech can do today and how it is expected to evolve in 2014):
In the ideal world this type of AI is integrated deeper into the ROM to enable a real device experience rather than an app experience. And that's the point of this post. At some point we'll open up the framework (a API to a user's "personal cloud" - Because each user owns their own data and can host their cloud anywhere they want, each users API will have its own endpoint url) for anyone who wishes to integrate AI into their ROM, launcher, or app. But today we're too early for a general release and instead looking to partner with an existing developer who can see the long term potential.
If you're a ROM developer and interested in at least learning more, PM me and we can have an initial chat.
PS. Has to be for a Sprint Samsung Note 3 ROM. Why? I have that device and obviously for me to support you on development .... well, it would be ideal for me being able to run your ROM And also, since Note 3 is by far the absolute best device out there, I'm curious how you can innovate the user experience with this technology to something even better few people can imagine.
This sounds really interesting. I would like some more info if possible, unfortunately just that since I don't have an N3 (Sprint S3 instead).
And here's the link for others: http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/13/kimera-systems-wants-your-smartphone-to-think-for-you/
I thought google was working on this and it was named project "Majel", which is a reference to Majel Barrett of Star Trek fame for anybody in the know
Interesting!

Mind blowing, every time when I see something like this happening with technology I wonder that most of the things we saw in Si-Fi movies are about to come real. it's started, messing up with AI has started at right time and we are very fortunate to see something incredible in upcoming years.

Yeah, like Skynet and T1000 Military robots/drones. It will be awesome to be oppressed by our governments with AI! I cannot wait!

In short (okay, maybe not short) we built the technology to focus on
Allowing any connected device to understand the world the same way you do. That means "human-like intelligence' (and I believe we're the first one to have cracked that nut) and the ability for your devices to mimic your personality.
Complete data privacy. I hate the idea that 3rd party companies own and control your data and literally turning you into a product they can sell to advertisers. So we've implemented a "personal cloud" solution. The idea is that instead of all your Android devices connected to Google server farm, or Facebook server farm when starting your FB app, or Apple server farm for iOS etc....I want us to get to a point where all your devices connect to your personal cloud and that you can host your cloud anywhere you want so that you have full control over it. This means no one, including my startup, will ever get into a position to controlling the intelligence or data on the global network. Or in other words, no NSA and no Skynet.
This is the most important part: Devices need to understand "WHY?". Why are you doing this or that? etc. Anyone who can answer the question why exhibits real human intelligence. That is the main point of this AI.
From a practical standpoint, the AI really interconnects these personal clouds in specific ways so that they can "produce" intelligence. The result is an "intelligence briefing" that is sent to the device allowing the device to understand what is going on and why and provide information where the device can find apps, services, content so that device can automatically connect to the app. (no app stores or social networks or commerce platforms, just direct from user to service/product/app provider).
Kind went into the technical details here, but hopefully it answered your question
And thank you for posting the link

We designed it specifically to prevent government and hackers to invade your privacy. No Skynet!

I guess the real money in the future is to develop "psychiatric therapy centers" for electronic devices AI. if is going to be "human-like intelligence''... LOL now you're one step ahead of the curve.

LOL! If it is being designed by a man you better believe that! The ultimate punishment will be having the device deactivated and being forced to run the Palm OS for the rest of its life.

Yeah both of those OSs will make a phone feel retarded. It will be the equivalent of having a stroke for a cell phone.

Forgot Apple iOS lol, if it was forced to run iOS it might start uninstalling itself and cause your device to brick to prevent it from having to deal w/ the OS........software seppuku lol

Having to run the IOS will be for misdemeanors and the Palm OS would be for life sentences. The blackberry OS is for everything in between.

I had used the palm treo for a while. It was cool for one of the first "operating system based phones", but maybe going back, since after not using it for so long, I would probably have to concur lol. I need to pick one up and play with it again.

The Palm OS was my favorite back in the days but times change and we have to adapt and keep with the times. Palm OS was good for it's time. The funny thing is Android approached Palm first to throw their OS in their phone but Palm told android to F-off. That decision F-ed Palm and now they are no longer making smartphones.
