Running at 200 dpi on CM9 changes the keyboard to go tablet mode. I love the phone mode keyboard but the button layout in tablet mode, everything feels off. Is there a way to always force the phone mode keyboard regardless of dpi?

Using PAD build(Paranoid android) you can force it to use phone ui with tablet dpi, you could also try Da's hybrid build. Short of those two unless you set over 214 its will be tablet keyboard layout.

Like so. That is phone ui at 160dpi.

Good luck then, hybrid is one thing, trying to force an app to render two different ui styles is another.

Using PAD, set messages to tablet ui 160 dpi, then set android keyboard to 320 dpi with phone ui. Might work.

Use Hacker's Keyboard. Phone or tablet mode it allows you to use 4 or 5 row layout and adds more keys. In landscape it has a number row which is great on the large Note screen. It's worth a try at least, it's free and open source (based on the stock GB keyboard but now has ICS theme).

When I goto respond to a text and press the message area for the keyboard to pop up the text message window increases to a full screen window instead of the smaller window it used to.
Looks like this below, Anyone know how to change it back to the smaller window
Go into keyboard settings. I believe its under landscape settings which is weird why its affecting the portrait mode.

Hmm.. I though I remembered a setting for that. Maybe try a factory reset if you are willing too.

Are we going to have any modification of touch wiz UI to have landscape mode on home screen? I'm really frustrated..... I really don't want to switch to another UI....
Have you tried to use a launcher?

It sucks that TW still doesn't have that.
I might never have swapped to Nova if TW had that feature.

Really??
I have used Nova for a bunch of different phones and I don't remember it ever FCing once. (it has definitely ran absolutely perfect in my N2.
Ultimate rotation control will allow you to force anything to rotate. I used it to get 180 rotation before we had ROMs with it baked in.

Thanks man! This is just what I need!
Alternatively, search for "Rotation Locker madmack" on Google Play for a free app that works too, pressing and holding "auto" when you start up the app will make it run in the background.

After 7 days of using this apk, it's asking me to pay for it.
I got it, and made my launcher get all buggy. Kept getting force closes, and my s pen stopped working.
Deleted it, now everything works fine...
This is my signature....
I FULLY endorse this app!I love it! I have had it since the time I bought the phone, and it's totally worth the money. You have complete rotational control and it has settings that allow you to set its function BY THE APP, so if you want your game app to run in landscape or portrait, you can set it to only work in one or the other! As an example, I'm an avid Flick Golf player and it only works in Portrait. If I rotate it to Landscape, it turns it off and makes me restart (reloads right from the beginning). By forcing it into portrait, I never have this problem!
This app is a godsend!!!!
Personally, I much prefer to just use a launcher like Nova or Apex that already has this function built into it as a standard feature.
If you don't want to do that for some reason, this app although it can be somewhat buggy at times is another option to gain that function.
Love this app. Must have for stock launcher. No errors so far.

just got it and its amazing!!! Thankyou
Been using this app for months, stable on Stock ROM, Rooted Stock ROM, and Rooted BeansV6 ROM.
This app does work pretty good, my only issue is on accelerometer based games, such as need for speed. The car with just go in circles. I tried disabling it for that app, and even for forcing orientation for it, and the best I could get was for the car to do circles in the opposite direction. Uninstalling the app and rebooting fixed the issue. Kind of a bummer, but at least most ROMs have alternate rotations included, so the app isn't necessary.

Lol, I totally know what you're saying. What you need to do is preset Need For Speed to landscape, but here is the important part! You need to rotate your phone's orientation to landscape prior to opening up Need For Speed. If you open it up from portrait and it has to switch, it throws the accelerometer off which is why your car will always do counterclockwise turns since it is emulating the motion of rotating your phone as well.
Trust me, I went through this but this solution definitely works!

Just curious what keyboard everyone is using. The S4 is defaulted to the Samsung keyboard which uses SwiftKey, but the S4 also comes with Swype. Are you using one of those, or are you using another? Maybe the SwiftKey or Swype from the market to gain some more options? Another keyboard?
What are you using, and why do you prefer it?
I'm using SwiftKey from the market. The stock Samsung keyboard does not have auto correct which is not something I can deal with.

I'm using stock 4.2.2 keyboard because I like the Holo UI look.
Kii. It has the option for the top number row like the stock keyboard, but it has autocorrect. I own Swiftkey also, but I hate it.
I use swiftkey from the market although the stock keyboard is kinda nice with the number row on top
installed the AOSP 4.2.2 keyboard. got so use to it when i was on my nexus, why change..
Check out the Swype keyboard I modded for a dedicated number row:

I prefer swype like interface.
I have used both swiftkey (before swype-like interface) and afterwards, swype, thumb keyboard, and Slideit.
I prefer using swiftkey slightly.
Swype is probably the best in regards to sliding.
Slideit is nice but has a slight lag that messes me up.
Swiftkey has some predictive stuff which can both help or hinder.
I think you can't go wrong with any of the above 3.
For tablets, I just use thumb keyboard.
for me either stock 4.2 keyboard or samsung galaxy s4's keyboard love them both
I like the stock keyboard and Google keyboard from the market. The stock keyboard is tough to type with after having a number of drinks

Haha. I use SwiftKey, in Pitch color scheme. Jelly Bean keyboard https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jlsoft.inputmethod.latin.jelly.free is great too. Just like the stock Google keyboard but with more secondary functions on the keys.
As someone who purchased both swype and swiftkey, I personally use the Samsung keyboard, though I must add that I took the apk from the international version and changed some things to make it work how I wanted it to. Currently I m testing the Google keyboard from the 4.3 leak and its pretty good, haven't used it very long though.

Wish Swype would for allow for customer autotexts (abbreviations). I use about 100 of these daily.
I used to use swiftkey before I came to the s4 but now I dont seem to think it looks good on the phone it just looks plan so as of now im using stock even though I serverly hate the keyboard because I keep making mistakes on it.

I've used SwiftKey for nearly a year now. I did try the 4.2 stock keyboard for a week or two but found my way back to SwiftKey. The predictive capabilities are phenomenal and can really save you time.
I like the stock Samsung key board. The numbers on top are great. My only concern is the dictionary. I have added words to the Samsung dictionary, but they still dont show up when texting. Has anyone had success with adding words to the dictionary?
