Hot Galaxy S2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have come to believe that our galaxy phones would run hot during CPU intensive tasks such as web browsing with lots of flash GPS, data usage and webbrowsing. What I don't get is that, why is our phone hotter than for example an iPhone when during CPU intensive tasks?
Surfing the web on data doesn't get as hot on the iPhone as my galaxy s2

One possible reason is due to the fact iphone 4s CPU is clocked at 1Ghz compared to ours at 1.2 Ghz. You can try clocking down, it doesnt completely make the phone cold, but I found it helps. Im my case at least, all my apps work just fine even at 1 GHz.

Can you describe where the heat source is? Mine is just around the camera. I've found out in fact many custom roms cause this. Resurrection, sensation, none worked without heating. Though with stock rom, I've rarely had heating problems (only while charging). So I assume custom roms do not help much in this sense.

Just to confirm, you have the i9100 correct? Not the AT&T or Tmobile SGS2?

Yea around the camera. That's where all the heat comes from. I don't remember stock at all as I quickly changed from stock to AOSP. But every AOSP rom so far has the heating problem. I just underclocked my phone to 100mhz to 900mhz. And also step down the GPU.

you could have tried changing modem and kernel.

Exynos
Its actually the problem within Exynos chip-set ,its get super hot ( 50+ degrees Celsius!) during intensive task ,other phones use different SoC,i think samsung already solved this issue in S III ,hopefully ^^

galaxy note 1.4ghz so galaxy s2 safe oc?

Hi, i know this is a stupid question and i have tried to do some research before hand. I have never overclocked any of my android devices, as the worrying that it will decrease you phones life span has always worried me, and the fact that overclocking my old htc desire actually made it unstable. But because the galaxy note had the exact same exynos processor as the s2 but clocked to 1.4ghz. does that mean it's perfectly safe to overclock the cpu to 1.4ghz?
The reason why I am asking is because the galaxy note vs s2 videos on youtube show the note to be noticeably faster in everything. Thanks very much

I run my device at 1.6 with absolute stability. Believe it or not, a lot of the processors released in todays devices are meant to handle much higher speeds, but for battery purposes, they dont push the limits. But to answer your question, yes, its perfectly safe to push it to 1.4, and you probably wont notice any more battery drain then your already used to since they make some battery saver tweaks in the aftermarket kernels. I use Siyahs kernel and its awesome.

Modern Combat 3 Laggy Singleplayer (SGS2)

Hi guys, the game works fine for a couple of mins, until the phone starts heating and well , it starts lagginggggg. Multiplayer works fine, but single player is just killing me. Problems only occur when phone starts to warm up. Anyone facing this issue?
More info : Strafing and scrolling "view" seems to be lagging, as though frame-rate just dropped or something. I've reinstalled and uninstalled, downloaded data and still, the same outcome. Multiplayer is as smooth as
Please tell me this isnt just meeee
im alone?????
Ive only played the first mission. it does not lag or overheat like you mention, although i do notice the frames drop in some areas becoming slightly laggy.online gaming is great.i hate that the game crashes and restarts sometimes in online play
Have some apps running in the background?
I also experience UHT moment when i play gameloft games.. but theres no continuous lag, only stutters on some area..
You may also need to check that your governor wasn't on conservative..

Hmm, im on the latest version. 1.0.1. What im getting is the BLURISH effect when scrolling views. Im pretty sure its a framerate drop. Ive got MC3 running alone, no background apps. Its literally killing me. Ive tried 5 different kernels, and Im sure im not overclocking or underclocking the cpu. Im using stock rom though. Would cyanogenmod help improve the gameplay? Any good roms that still preserve the samsung qwerty keyboard?
I have this issue too. I have a Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100, Noble Black, 2.3.5, stock ROM, kernel XWKJ1 (also stock), NO ROOT
At some point (fire or many trees or something) the game is lowering the FPS. I didn't noticed that for example on Sensation XL (which has 1.5 singlecore and even higher screen resolution than my phone has) and i didn't saw a single lag.
I made a video about this problem and posted it on youtube here it is:
I suppose this problem is related to my stock ROM or even my stock kernel... something similar is happening with backstab but there it's not that annoying since it's not a FPS game

YES YES Im not alone. Thats the problem. I wonder if its due to the stock rom...
Got the game no issue here. im rooted on slimrom with siyah kernel, not overclocked but undervolted so it doesnt heat up so much. Fyi shadow gun is a really good game as well
looks like an iphone but powered by android baby!!!!
No issues here.
Well,it even happens on my device, which is overclocked, both the CPU(1600MHz) and the GPU(400MHz).It seems to only happen when there is smoke on the screen.Doesn't happen in any other case.
Feel like flashing a new rom. Gonna get a usb jig first...
Btw, any roms to recommend?
@androidkid:slimrom running touchwiz?

Because it has another much weaker GPU, therefore it has much lower graphical quality settings. It's like playing on Low and the GSII on very high.

Well, even if it is so,it's unacceptable,as it's definitely a fault on Gameloft's part. The game is,once again like other Gameloft titles, more or less badly coded. It uses too much GPU.I can play ShadowGun with 16x MSAA(Using CF3D) for hours and the phone just gets warm, while I can't play MC3 for nearly as long and the device burns. Before anyone tries to say that it's because MC3 has so super awesome graphics,it's not the cause. Our GPU doesn't overheat, even when overclocked.Excessive heat is only generated by the CPU.So,try playing ShadowGun and MC3 with 500MHz or 800MHz CPU.ShadowGun still plays as awesome as before, while MC3 lags.
We should contact Gameloft me thinks...

Try the map where your using a minigun and escaping with a truck/car (dont remember the map name)
the fps drops from stable 60 to under 20 impossible to, win the level through with hard
Hmm which governor are you using? i just know that lulzactive is kinda bad if it comes to gaming. try out some stock governors like ondemand, conservative or performance.

Why samsung galaxy s 2 i9100?

Basically, i got this phone(GS2 i9100M) a week ago and found way too many problems that i cannot fix. So, why exactly does so many people like about this phone compared to other variant, e.g. GS2 T989 with snapdragon processor? I mean, my brother has the T989 and i also had it before too until i sold it to get this. It seems like i've been experiencing a lot of problem from this phone that does not really occur on the T989. The default music player is faulty which causes auto reboot, and the phone constantly heats up; even when viewing photos from the gallery! What attracted me to get this phone was people's opinion about the CPU and GPU also the gorilla glass, but i dont really notice a big differences in speed between the two phones. The T989 also doesn't heat up this much or this often. Feel free to share your experience people, and would appreciate if someone can offer me some advices on how to fix the heating up issues.
First, its better to talk n read at 9100 forum section but since im a 9100 user, ill share it here
Yes, on day one i got my 9100, it gets really warm even when not charging and got a lot worse when on charge. Its mostly the media scanning process which seems unstoppable on the earlier build when the SGS2 was released
I first noticed that its solved when using XXKG3 firmware and above. And also, undervolting to around 50mv reduces the heat too. A normal 9100 is capable of undervolting up to 175-200mv but it depends on phones are some silicones are made better and its not a constant result. What samsung made is setting the voltage at all the same safe level to avoid reboots. U have the option to undervolt it to reduce heat or even underclock to 1Ghz since 1.2ghz is quite overpowered and u want to conserve the battery and make it last longer.
Try Siyah kernel and learn to tweak using voltage controller and extweaks. There r guides given in SGS2 section here on XDA and it is well compiled.
Cheers

bershote Legiflature;
Thanks for your reply. I've posted in the wrong section by mistake. Someday I'd consider rooting the phone, but at the moment I don't want to take the risk because I'm still kind of new to smartphones and don't know much about it. What's your opinions on ICS? Do you think ICS OS release will solve most of these problems?

My i9300 is slow and laggy

I've been on latest stock for a while, but it became slower and slower during time, so I've decided to root and in give few ROMs a try. I've flashed OmniROM and Android Revolution, but my phone is still much slower and laggier in comparison to Galaxy SII (on neatrom) or Galaxy Nexus (on omnimetal). Even Galaxy S1 with latest CM works better.
I've also noticed that it takes very long for MMS to be send, perhaps it's somehow related?
Any ideas what else could I try? OmniROM and Android Revolution should be fast and snappy, right? What could be the problem then?
I've heard that some i9300 phones might have hardware defect that causes similar problems. Is that true?

Backup any data you need from internal sd card then format internal card this solves many issues with lag especially when you switch between alot of roms like I do.

GTI9300 will be faster if you flash aosp roms like cyanogen mod or paranoid android. Prepare to lose some samsung features tho and have some extra bugs.. the trade is worth it imho.

Or do a mega wipe. Its mean full wipe + wipe system and internal SD And flash a new ROM
I can vouch for the Revolution HD ROM
About a month ago I switched from the pre-installed T-Mobile ROM to Revolution HD 51.0 on my Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) and I have no regrets. Compared to the T-Mobile Rom, it is extremely fast and with very light battery consumption. In addition, I have not yet encountered any bugs.
The Revolution HD ROM is so fast that I have now begun using the search feature in the dialer - before, it was just as slow to scroll with the alphabet and finding the contact as it was using the search function.
The battery consumption is incredible! With light usage, my battery goes down less than 0.8%/hour. Even with high usage (>1.5 hour talk, ~1 hour WiFi/mobile data internet, >3 hour Bluetooth hook-up to my car, a handful of written emails and >30m sudoku per 24 hours) I have not been using over 1.4%/hour. I have gone from recharging every two days to every three-four days! My record was 97 hours without a charge and still 18% juice left in the box.
I use GPS navigation once in a while in my car and that consumes a lot of battery, but then the device is always connected to power (I haven't gotten around to try GPS navigation without charging just to check the consumption on Revolution HD).
I am not a techie, so I have disabled background services very conservatively (I killed most social app stuff, but I let services with cryptic names be) and I am using the Lightning browser which is fast and very light. In the beginning, I had a bit of trouble with battery performance until I read that the Power Saving feature must always be on. With the T-mobile ROM, the screen was a battery hog even when set on auto, so I set it manually - on the Revolution HD ROM, the auto brightness works well and conserves battery. It should also be said that I live in an area with good signal reception and coverage is good in most places I go (in areas with low reception, the device will automatically increase the juice for the radio unit).
I am very excited about the Revolution HD ROM, but I cannot tell you how it performs if you do a lot of social networking stuff (I primarily use the phone for work).

One solution is to format the internal memory like @tallman43 suggested.
Another reason maybe extra heat on processors. Did you notice this or the temperature is normal?
You can try flashing a different kernel and see if it makes any difference.
MMS sending is more dependent on network speeds so it could be unrelated.

try neatrom Lite v75 full with boeffla kernel and if u can find archi profile (performance) and u could clock to 1700 on boeffla config....i am now on resurrection remix rom 4.4.2 and phone is fast as hell ..it has minor bugs tho..
u can try AOSP NeatROM v 5.8
very stable and smoth. u can get free ram 400mb++

Phone gets really hot on certain roms

Hi all,
I seem to have a problem with certain roms on my S3 that will heat my phone up excessively after just a few minutes use, while other roms don't.
I used to use Omega Rom V43.3 and JKay and that never once heated up to the extent that I would almost burn myself. I decided to try Revolution HD, Glamour S5 and Blisspop and my phone would heat up with all of them.
I am looking for a new rom as Omega Rom is really outdated and I am missing out on newer updates.
What would cause this? Is this Kernel related? If so what Rom or Kernel would reduce this?
I use the screen on the lowest brightness setting and don't use too many apps at once, Spotify, Facebook, Whatsapp etc.
Does anyone have an idea? I would have asked in a dev thread for one of the roms but I don't have the required 10 posts.
Thanks!

Underclocking is hardly the solution. I'd check for CPU-intensive apps. One of them must be running in the background. Check the battery stats for clues too.
Its ROM code issues
The rom is probably taxing the hardware more
Is 60 degrees celsius a normal temperature for a phone cpu to reach? This seems really high to me as I am almost burning my hands. It's really uncomfortable. Battery reaches about 43 degrees celsius.
Using Boefla Kernel and Android Revolution HD rom. Tried Blisspop with Archi Kernel and it would get just as hot. Omega rom the same thing.
Screen is on it's lowest setting and I tried undervolting as well, no luck. These are all fresh wipe installs
Is it just one of those things that some S3's will heat up more than others or is this temperature a bit too high?
Thanks
So long as the device doesn't shut down it wont do any damage. The main problem is comfort. Have you activated power save mode?
