Hi guys!
This is my first thread post so bare with me I have a galaxy s3 rooted with CWM recovery on stock ROM. If Samsung releases a jelly bean OTA update to us soon, will i be able to flash it or will it brick the phone?
I know i can always flash a custom JB ROM that i know CM9 and AOSP are currently working on, but if i want to do it officialy through Samsung, will i be able to? Are there any risks?!
Thanks!
as long as youve used chainfires cwm ver1.5+ youll be fine to get ota updates but you will need to run cf root again after the update.

OTA's
Since v1.5, flashing OTA updates is supported directly using this recovery. You should however be aware that said OTA will most likely re-install stock recovery and remove this one. Furthermore, it may keep doing so every time you boot. CF-Root v6.3 (and newer) will try to disable this, it is advised you flash that. Just reflashing this CWM recovery will likely not help.

Hi I have the latest omega rom on my phone but when I try to software update on my phone it says that latest updates are installed even though I know theres a new updates.
If I try to update via kies it says my phone is not compatible to update (or something along those lines)
Can anyone tell me how to get the latest update thanks
You need to stick with stock ROMs if you want OTA updates and via kies, you should also understand all the drawbacks, risks and benefits of customs ROMs before you flash them.
Omega, like all other custom ROMs will break OTA firmware updates and kies. Go to the Omega thread, download the latest version and follow the chef's instuctions to flash it.
So far my experience with the recent update has been mediocre, Its been 2 days now for me and i'm ready to re-root my device and start tackling some of the bloatware to help improve performance or maybe installing some custom roms again(No Really this phone had better fluidity when i was running GB)....My questions is: now that i'm running stock 4.1 is the rooting process any different from when I was running stock 4.0.4?
I can't post links but on Galaxy note hacks there is a rooting guide specific to my phone...but not specific to the software version.
Thank You
Alex

That link is rather useless without explaining how to get recovery...
Op yes.
rooting jb is the same... use Odin to flash a custom recovery image.
Then use that recovery to flash zips, for root, or a completely different Rom.
Hi,
I have a Verizon Galaxy Note II I605 running Android 4.1.1 that I had originally rooted via Odin and followed instructions on the galaxynote2root website last Jan/Feb in 2012
I would like to upgrade to a stock ROM of 4.3 and keep root and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction in regards to which ROM to use and the steps to do so. I really only use root for the wifi tether and would like to keep the phone as close to stock as possible. I've gone through a number of different forums and posts but can't seem to find some good instructions with a corresponding recommendation on an Official OTA 4.3 ROM to use. I've found a lot variations on 4.3 ROMs, but most of them have gutted a lot of things or discussing having to flash firmware which makes me nervous.
Also, is it true I may be forced to take the OTA in the near future and potentially soft brick my phone if I don't either revert back to stock or install a 4.3 ROM which disables the update app. I'm not sure if the ROM i'm currently running has this disabled or not.
Thanks in advance for any help,
eugenikz
Beanstown or sophisticated rom will be the official stock 4.3, however your gonna have to flash the Official MJ9 firmware via Odin. You could take the OTA but the bootloader will be locked afterwards. There is root available with the OTA stock but you won't be able to load a custom recovery therefore no more custom roms.
+1. I did this with my note2. Was the same as yours. I'm now on sophisticated 2.0 highly recommended. I also updated recovery to Phils, which seems to be the conventional wisdom for flashing 4.3.

I Have the SM G925Z Version of the galaxy s6 Edge [Japan SoftBank]
I See many Roms that say "Works with many g925 Versions !" but the Japanese Z Version is never listed anywhere.
only the F T U V P etc etc versions.
If I use TWRP 2.8.6.0 to backup my current Rom, can I try these other Roms and safely return to my Stock Rom
if cell or wifi service stop working? If I try 5.1.1 Roms, I can not return to 5.0.2 roms?
Can I use TWRP to install a 5.1.1 rom that I download, even while my current Rom is 5.0.2 ?
or can I only install Roms using Odin Flash tool ?
My ZTE Warp phone was able to install Roms from downloaded Zip files with TWRP.
But I am not 100 % sure about the process.

First the s6 edge is a different style of device. To install 5.1.1 roms on the device you have to be on 5.1.1. Same with 5.0.2. Yes you can try any rom from the s6 and the s6 edge rom so long as you flash a special kernal for your device that makes the rom work on your device. If cellular data does not work, revert to your nandroid backup of your origonal os and flash another rom and you'll be good if that one works. Just repeat if the roms dont work or if you get tired of it then just stick with your stock rom which should be your nandroid backup.

Thank you. I can understand this, except for the kernal part, please explain.
How can I backup my current Kernal so that I can return to my Stock Rom backup.?
will a TWRP Nandroid backup do that automatically ?
how do I install the correct Kernal? with TWRP ?
for example, from the ROM installation , it says
[5]Install Zip from storage
[6]Flash The Capsule ROM
[7]Flash arter97 kernel
[8]Flash SuperSU
[9]Reboot
Im assuming 5 means, copy the rom to the phone, 6 means use TWRP to install,
so flash the kernal after the rom ? with Twrp ?
how can I backup my kernal first? so that I can return to my 5.0.2.
and last question, you said I need to be on 5.1.1 to try 5.1.1 roms.
the Japan SM g925Z is a 5.0.2 rom atm, they never updated to 5.1.
most of the roms I see are 5.1.1
Does that mean there is no way to upgrade to 5.1.1 while on 5.0.2 ?
or does that mean, if I flash a new TWRP and 5.1.1 Rom, I can just never return to 5.1.1 ?
Does TWRP Mean Kernel ?
maybe that is what I am missing.
I already have a working TWRP.
some roms do not mention flashing kernels in the installation, some do,
does that mean it does not matter? or does that mean that the installation guide is terrible and people are going to brick ---- if they dont know about it ?
Im not exactly sure the difference between kernel and Rom.
To answer your first question, the nandroid backup you do in twrp backs it up because it is a required portion of your rom. Which also answers your second question as yes.
The answer to your third question is you have to find a flashable zip of a custom kernal for your device. You can also try restoring your boot from the nandroid which contains the kernal and if that one doesnt work flash the custom kernal zip.
Next i need a link to the rom your trying to flash to check it out.
The only way to install 5.1.1 roms is to be on that android version. The reason is that android uses an sdk platform and 5.0.2 uses sdk 21 and 5.1.1 uses sdk 22 so those are incompatable with each other.
No way to update that device to 5.1.1 unless it is released for that device or unless the hardware sources are released for aosp roms which may be a while where samsung has not released them yet due to the new Exynos processor that they recently created.
No twrp is your recovery but it backs up your kernal with the backup.
Those roms are for specific device varients and will work without installing a kernal because the kernal that it needs is for the devices they are meant for.
The others that say install kernals are ones that didnt have the kernal put in the rom zip.

Either that or they didnt modify the kernals in the rom zip to the specifacations that they wanted so they fixed it and posted the kernal.

thank you, that does explain alot.
I am not sure which Rom I should try. None of them actually say sm g95z.
Which roms would you recommend I try first?
I am not sure any will work, they all appear to be 5.1.1 only.
which means my 5.0.2 system can not test any of them.
or more specifically, if I upgrade to 5.1.1, and they fail to connect to wifi or cellular, then I can not return to 5.0.2 I guess.
Do you know of any that are 5.0.2 ?
those should be safe to try I guess.
I just want to get rid of the 500 retarded A-- Samsung apps that auto update.
I dont need Sfinder X_x, I dont need quick connect, I REALLY dont want virus protection from samsung clogging up my performance.
I have read about build.prop tweaks and updates, but the sm g925Z version did not get 5.1.1 updates, so those fixes do not work.
I do have Root access already, but with TWRP 2.8.6.0 (Because its said that it doesnt trip knox).
but I can not un-install these fkn bloatware apps, even with root access.
This appears to be a 5.0.2 Galaxy S6 Edge Rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...edge-g925fxxu1aocv-v1-0-deodex-aroma-t3102974
but it says G925FXX, my phone is G925ZZ
I should be able to test it, and return to my g925ZZ TWRP backup pretty easily right ? since it is 5.0.2 ?
Just to confirm for other people.
I tested the VNRom 5.0.2 for G920F
it ran like S--T.
I used TWRP backup to go back to Stock 5.0.2 just fine.
no problems.

Hello, Have you found any compatible rom?
