Not able to connect using kies - rooted ATT Galaxy S2 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I am rooted galaxy S2. I have received an alert from ATT saying ICS is available to download. I am not able to connect using Kies. I have tried the following with no luck after reading tons of posts here:
i) checked/unchecked to USB debugging mode.
ii)dialed *#7284#...checked/unchecked usb mode there too, no luck.
iii) updated kies drivers ,still same issue.
ONLY option left is to factory reset my phone. IDK if i am facing this issue because i have rooted phone or something else. If anyone had SUCCESSFULLY upgraded to ICS on there rooted phone, please let me know...

if you are rooted and you have clockworkmod recovery, and you want the stock feel ICS, flash the ROM that I have linked in my signature. Its look is pretty much stock ICS but it is a HELL of a lot more smooth and has features that the stock does not have.
to answer your question, yes, at one point I did update using KIES from a rooted phone. After you have tried to connect, run the connection wizard from the KIES main window after you disconnect the phone.

are you rooted on stock GB 2.3.4, 2.3.6 or rooted and on a custom ROM?

Thanks for prompt response. Sorry for my limited knowledge, i dont know what does Stock and ROM means. I dont remember how i rooted my phone. I just want to get the latest official ICS update.

if you want the latest ics using kies turn phone off, pull battery, you'll need your s/n #and model, then put battery back in, open kies, go to tools, go down to firmware upgrade and initialization, it'll then ask for your s/n and model name, must match,, click ok, before continuing, hold, both volume buttons and plug into computer, it'll then go to download mode, to enter download mode, push volume up button once, you'll then be at the downloading screen, then follow on screen prompts, make sure you have a stable internet connection for your computer

doesn't using that method wipe all user data tied to the system? internal sd data remains but you lose all your setups.

Guess I don't understand. If you are rooted use the app in play store to keep root and use mobile Odin to flash the update. Then you can retain root on a terrible ics

[Q] Read all the posts I can find and I still can't flash with odin! Please help!

Hi everyone,
I brought a new galaxy s2 phone about 4 weeks ago and it has spent most of that time soft bricked since I tried to update it to the newest firmware, K14....
I am using windows 7 starter, 32bit. I have installed kies, uninstalled and re-installed kies, tried uninstalling kies and just using the drivers.
Recently I did a clean install of windows, installed kies, as more drivers seem to be recognized and downloaded odin v1.85. I restart the computer, start task manager end all processes that say kies, run odin as a administrator, put the tar file in pda, only auto reboot is selected. I then plug in the phone, in download mode, wait for yellow box and press start and the process only goes as far as boot.bin.
I have tried all of my usb ports and the only difference is the number of the modem installed driver and how far along odin gets. With two ports it only goes as far as setup connection which was as far as anything went before I re-installed windows. I have replaced the usb cable and made sure the phone battery is fully charged. The phone was put into usb debugging mode before it was bricked. I have attached a picture of what drivers get installed when I plug in the phone. The firmware I am attempting to flash is the uk 3 version off the firmware page of this website.
Please can somebody give me the solution it is driving me nuts!
Sorry for waffling but I figure you need to know what I've tried so that I don't waste anybodies time.
Thanks guys
Did you try a different stock rom? Did you try a different pc? Or if you want to, flash a CF-root kernel. Then boot in recovery and flash a rom of your choice.
The flashcounter will start and stock roms can't be flashed this way (at least as far as I know).
Is your phone a I9100 model?
I ask this to make sure you are trying to flash the correct firmware for your device.

Possibility one bad firmware file or wrong file ,
Or not using Samsung USB cable .

Hi Lenny,
Yh, i have tried it on my desktop which runs 7 home premium. Clean install with same results. Tried the K14 firmware a few times but that never got any further than setup connection. Don't understand the rest of your post sorry. Can you do a flash for dummies thing? And is there a firmware you would recommend trying?
@ aceofclubs -the box says i9100 and so does the sticker in the back.
@ JJEgan - the first cable I used was the one in the box and while the one I have replaced by ebay, they had good feedback. The K14 firmware was given to be by a user of the galaxy s2 that he had successfully flashed with.
Does the phone look to have installed correctly, the guy who gave me the firmware said he had abd appear in device manager, which I haven't got. Also after the phone is finished installing drivers if I click in the system tray, the green icon that shows devices that are present is not there and neither is the phone but if I go into device manager samsung composite device is.

No you dont need a ADB neccesarily for flashing. ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is a tool that comes with the Android SDK that allows you to control and interface with your Android device. Well do u have the phone specifications before bricking it, like Model No, Built, CSC, Kernal Etc.
First try to uninstall Kies and Install the latest version, so that you have the latest drivers.
Check the Intratech thread on Stock ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) and download the correct rom.( I presume you have I9100 Intenational Version of S2). Open Odin 1.85, do not change any options, brownse and put the stock rom u downloaded into the PDA section and click on start button, you should be good.PM me if you have any issues.
The above didn't work. Here's what I got:

AS you have the yellow box in Odin you have the drivers all the firmware in that link works .
run odin as a administrator, put the tar file in pda, only auto reboot is selected. I then plug in the phone, in download mode, wait for yellow box and press start
Lets do this the right way just to be sure . Open Odin put the tar file in PDA
go to download mode at first screen download mode on phone follow instruction ( vol up from memory ) after next screen connect Samsung USB cable to phone and PC .

Thanks, think I've done that anyway but, just to check, what do you mean by next screen?
The screen when you are in download mode and press volume up.
Yh that is what I'm doing, thanks tho. Can someone please give me a reliable link to an older version of Odin to try? At the mo I am using v1.85, this the latest version?

So close! I plugged the phone in and got as far as cache with the green progress bar showing just the tiniest bit. Left it for over an hour but the bar didn't move at all! Encouraged I restarted the computer to try again only to find that now the computer and odin won't recognize the phone until I uninstall and reinstall kies and always hangs on cache. I restarted in the first place as the phone never shows in the system tray. Sorry to be a bore but have you any idea why everyone else can plug in and flash and my machines refuse to! I welcome any ideas you have. Thank you.
Instead of Odin, you could try Heimdall. Maybe that will work for you.

hey hope everyone had a good christmas and new year. Still no joy, where do I get PIT files to flash with the newest version of heimdall to go with our firmware? The newest version won't let me add files until I enter a PIT. I tried version 1.1 but I couldn't get it to recognise a compatible device.
On the odin front: I thought I'd cracked it. It started flashing, took hours but I had half a green progress bar and then it just seem to freeze. Also this seems replicable a few times and then I get stuck at setup connection again. I then have to do a system restore to get it to flash to the furthest point again. Does this give anyone any clues? Or does anyone know of any heimdell packages I could try? And the long shot, any way of getting firmware on to an sd card and flashing that way when a phone is soft bricked?
Sorry if I'm annoying you but there has to a way round this. I brought a rooted one to use while this is sorted, love the phone but need to know I can update and be able to sort it out if things go wrong.
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

[Q] at wits end with updating

I've read just about every thread on here with people having issues updating and nothing has worked for me. I can't seem to get kies to connect to my phone to use the emergency tool (tied just about every method here). I'm thinking it maybe best to try my hand again at reverting back to gb and see if kies will connect. I'm not sure what tools I need to go back to gb, rom, modem etc, and which order to flash them at. I've downloaded to my pc the big rar file located in the dev sticky section for unbricking but when I place the file into odin and run it, it fails...what do I do?

There is an issue with Kies updating if the modem file does not match what its looking for. If you have changed in ROM/rooted, etc there is a chance you have installed a version of the modem it deems unfit...and refused to update.
Follow these instructions to update your Note to the official ICS unrooted AT&T release;

Here is the simple way to do it and you can do it through Kies no matter what Firmware you are on.
1: Take battery out and write down the serial number exactly how it is written.
2: Put battery back in and cover back on.
3: Restart phone.
4: Place phone in Download Mode by holdin volume down and power buttons at the same time then when you get to the menu screen it will tell you to press volume up to continue, do that.
5: Run Kies, connect your device and inside Kies click on tools, in the dropdown menu click on Firmware Upgrade And Initialization.
6: In the popup screen type your serial number exactly how it it written under the battery and then type SGHI717 with all caps for the model name.
7: You will get a popup about downloading the firmware upgrade press ok.
8: Another popup will ask you if you agree, check the box about how you read and agree and click start upgrade.
Now Kies will download the firmware upgrade and your device will be upgraded to ICS.
FYI...Need to enter the dash in the model name = SGH-I717

[Q] SCH-R760X low in-call volume

I bought a Galaxy S2 from a guy about 2 months ago. The model is SCH-R760X and it is running GB28 version 4.1.2. I am using the phone on the Page Plus service and the guy had to do something to the phone so it would work on that carrier. The in-call volume is really low and I have to press the phone really hard up against my ear to hear anything. I done some research and found a article that talks about going into the service mode and turning the volume up. I tried doing this but when I open the service mode it is just a blank screen that says service mode at the top. I went through my files and noticed that it says 0.00kb beside it. I'm guessing that the application is still there but all internal files are deleted. I have the volume turned all the way up with the volume keys on the side but it is still very low. All other volumes are ok its just the in-call volume that I am having trouble with. I have tried many volume booster apps and haven't found anything to work yet and of course I cant get in touch with the guy that sold me the phone. I use the phone for work and having a hard time hearing customers through out the day. I absolutely love this phone and I am hoping someone can help me resolve this problem. If anyone at all can help me or give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated. If there is any information that I have left out or you need in addition to help resolve the problem then please feel free to ask. Thanks in advance.
Firstly, install dori kernel if ur rooted. If not root your phone first.
And once u have dori kernel go to stweaks and then sound and increase the master volume to 3db.
Also baseband plaus an important role here. Try different basebands and hopefully you would be laughing

MAKE SURE USB DEBUGGING IS ENABLED! go to [settings]-[applications]-[development] and usb debugging, check the box. Thanks to side_road for pointing this step out!!!
Droidroidz, for the sake of simplicity, i reuploaded your kernel to my min.us account, so that all the download links look the same (except for the samsung usb drivers). Thanks everyone for all the help. Especially sickin. this is essentially the guide he made for FB14 many moons ago.
As usual, by following this guide you agree that you are an adult acting on your own free will with the understanding that any modification of software on your smartphone could potentially cause irreparable damage including but not limited to: soft brick, hard brick, universe imploding, etc, etc. and that you will not hold me liable for any and all damages or undesireable consequences of following this guide. That being said, this is pretty harmless and difficult to mess up.
So, without further ado...
1. Download droidroidz’s kernel located HERE
2. Download Odin located HERE and extract to your desktop.
3. Depending on your phone, download FF18 stock kernel located HERE or FF24 stock kernel HERE
4. Power off phone, make sure it is completely off.
5. Press and hold power + volume down, (PRESS THE VOLUME DOWN BUTTON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN PUSH AND HOLD THE POWER BUTTON) release when the odin screen comes up
6. Press volume up to accept their conditions or whatever they want.
7. Open odin, click on the “PDA” button, and select the droidroidz-v0.2.tar.md5
8. Connect your phone to your computer.
9. Make sure that odin shows a yellow com # in the ID:COM box on the left. If it doesn’t, you need to install drivers for your phone. These can be found HERE. (bottom of page, Manuals & Downloads tab, under Software, it’s the USB driver. 25.31MB in size)
10. Click start, this will flash the kernel to your phone.
11. Once it is finished, it will automatically reboot. Disconnect your USB cable
12. After it finishes booting, open the market and search for superuser. There should be a listing that needs to update. Install the update.
13. Search again for busybox installer. Download and install that app
14. Open the busybox installer app, close or ignore all the popups and crap. We just want to hit that button that says install busybox, all the drop boxes and options are set by default and do not need changing.
15. Once it has completed, power off your phone again.
16. Press and hold power + volume down again, release when the odin screen comes up
17. Press volume up to accept
18. Open odin, and this time under PDA, browse to SCH-R760_STOCK_KERNEL.tar
19. Reconnect your USB cable, make sure that odin sees your phone again (the yellow COM port on the left)
20. Click start, this will flash the stock kernel back.
21. Once it is finished, the phone will reboot.
22. After it finishes booting, you should be golden, but to confirm you can go to the market and search for an app called root checker, this will test and make sure you have root.
23. Congratulations, was that so hard?
I found this from another topic and was wondering if I could use this process to root my phone. I would imagine I need to download the stock GB28 kernel instead of the others listed here. Is that correct? And still use the droidroidz kernel in the beginning?

[Q] Stuck in Odin mode "Could not do normal boot."

I recently got my new Verizon Galaxy S4 and decided to play around with it. I got it rooted fine and got a few apps on there (like Titanium backup) and decided that, since I would eventually want to play around with ROMs, I would want to unlock the phone.
I looked around and found there were some options for me, the one I chose being the "all in one" option that roots, unlocks and installs a custom recovery mode for you. I went through this process and now get nothing but the Downloader Mode (could not do normal boot). Even if I pop out the battery and try to reboot it, I get this screen.
I later found that apparently the ME7 model currently will not accept attempts to unlock the phone and install a custom ROM or recovery menu. How do I fix this? I tried using Odin, but it doesn't recognize the phone as being connected. I am currently trying other methods like Kies, to see if there is any way to at least to an emergency recovery and get it back to normal.
EDIT: Ran into the same issue with Kies as I did with Odin, it does not see anything connected to the computer.
Do you have the correct drivers installed? Does adb recognize the device? You're in Odin mode when you try to use Odin to push something? I believe with ME7 you can Odin back to the official stuff.

I ended up getting it to work. I had to go here:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-013541.htm
and get files to get the computer to recognize the device. Even afterwards, Keis had no idea what was going on, and Odin saw it and was able to install a stock firmware I downloaded earlier, saving the phone.
For now I will be satisfied with just root access and will wait for ROM capabilities.
I hate to hijack a thread but I'm stuck here. My GS 4 (Vzw) was supposedly successfully rooted using TWRP, but now I have no way to enter any sort of recovery. The package I downloaded for the root does not have an Odin version to run. I've been getting the endless prompts to install the 4.3 update but there is no way to do this on my phone. I get the same "Could not do normal boot. Odin mode. Write protection enabled" message with the downloading screen. I try to boot into recovery via CWM or Goomanager but it always goes to the same screen. I can't make any backups or restore now either or I would just do a factory reset. Any ideas? I'm on VRUAME7.
Um.... there's no recovery available with ME7.... are you on the MDK bootloader?

You're said that you're on ME7 - what you need to do is to flash the "No wipe" ME7 ROM onto your phone. It's in the Development forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
You've got to update to MI1 before you can install the 4.3 update (MJ7).
ONLY flash files intended for whatever release you're running. You can't mix and match, can't go backwards, and can't skip updates.
Theres also an ml1 factory image in the dev section.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.

On that page I linked to, look for this:
Solution:
Download and run the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility so Windows* properly recognizes the SMBus controller.
Get the proper driver download according to your OS, then install it. This should allow Odin to see the phone for you to install a clean copy of the stock ROM onto the phone.
If you want more details I am sorry to say I cannot provide them. When things involve me fixing my own technology, it is a lot of rapid-fire troubleshooting and I just go with what sticks without really memorizing what I did (so if I run into this issue again, I have to re-research).

I just want to be clear on the state of the phone. Does it have any charge left? Can you access the download screen? If you can access the download screen you can just use Odin to flash your original ROM back.
(Hold power button and volume down button at the same time until the phone vibrates. Then let go of the power button but keep holding the volume down until the download screen pops up.)

Any luck? If so I just had a thought.
My phone the I717R (Rogers) in Canada can't use Samsung Kies to restore the phone.
However if your phone is the ATT version and it can enter download mode you should be able to use Samsung Kies to restore to factory settings.
You'll just need to enter firmware upgrade and initialization I'm pretty sure it's called. Then you'll type in the model and serial number found under the battery and Kies will do the rest.

Did you install Samsung KIES first? It should automatically install the driver you need.
Also when you put it in to download mode do it while the phone is unplugged, then plug the phone in.
Let us know what happens, sure we'll figure it out.
I did and it didn't detect it still there's gotta be something I Can do

Try this link.
That's from the Samsung site for the I717 driver only. See if your computer picks up your phone after installing that.
If that doesn't work you may just want to use ODIN. I'll tell you everything you'd need to know to do that just don't have time ATM.
Have you tried another USB port and or cable?

are you using the oem cable? i can only get odin to pick up on my device with the oem one, my generic one just wont work for crap with odin.
I have tried everything you guys far suggested it just won't find my phone

that sucks, sorry to hear that. i would start fresh and uninstall the sammy drivers reboot the comp afterwards, reinstall drivers reboot once again, put the device into download with out firing up odin and see if that will help. I've noticed this device can be a bit finicky when it comes to drivers or maybe we are a few of the unlucky ones lol. I too have been having drivers issues lately regarding mtp and its been driving me nuts.
