is the bootload unlockable on a stock ota 4.5.9.1 atnt atrix? i am unclear from what i've read. i just want to unlock and start going to roms. is that possible or the 4.5.9.1 is stuck? the reason i ask is i want to start learning how to tweak stuff for myself and maybe others, and if goes well, i move on to bigger things, so this is my dev phone, if you will. i can't have a "beta" phone. i need reliability so another phone is called for.
Yes it is, I unlocked it with the with the automatic bootloader unlocker in the ATRIX 4g general thread by mramirezusa. Give that a look. Its not that complicated either to root with the tool too. If you FOLLOW directions, you wont brick your phone.

So my question is, right now as it stands, if i get the Photon I can root it & run all the root apps & functions & still have 4G, but from the bits i read, if I unlocked the bootloader as well, Ill lose 4G, can sumone clear this up for me?

You are correct. But you can unlock the bootloader and then lock it back up. So its like this:
Root and Unlock Bootloader
Install CWM
Install one of the only two ROMS we currently have
re-lock bootloader
Install bootstrap recovery
install updates to whichever ROM you want through bootstrap
Enjoy custom ROM with locked bootloader and 4g love
It is really just an extra step until we get the kernel source code. This is an absolute great phone and we have great people in this forum to help you out. There are quite a few guides on how to do all of this, if you want to PM me I can help you one on one get it done if need be. Other than that, hope to see you around these parts

I don't know, I find it pretty easy to do, and I'm not very good at adb stuff. I believe there is a one click root tool also and it only takes like 3 minutes to unlock the bootloader.
So I think the whole thing is pretty easy myself. Up to you really.

One thing I want to ask.
This is what is keeping me from even rooting. how do I unroot? In case I return this phone?

I had an ogEvo as well and new to the whole bootstrap but most of this stuff just sounds complex. Really isn't a huge deal once you get your feet wet. I had the same reservations when getting the ogEVO but over time ended up doing about everything to it. Never borked it once.

Yea, it really isn't that bad, a bootstrap is more harmless than a real recovery actually. Its just like installing an app from the market really.
And on the borking the android phones. I think this is extremely hard to do because I had an OgEvo and I don't think I could have bricked that if I tried. I think Android is some of the most user friendliest software out there in my opinion. I even thought I bricked my Photon the other day, but I didn't, you always just find out it's user error 99% of the time!
At least for me it is. lol
As for the root/unlock process with the photon, I think it is very easy once you run through it a couple times. I may make a video so people aren't so scared to try it out.

if VZW released the DX2 in Europe (possibly with an unlocked BL) couldn't we use files off that phone to unlock our BL? (if any of this was released, of course!)
Also, the photon now has their BL unlocked, and the DX2 and Photon are cousins couldn't we try their method(s) to unlock our BL? Unless that's not possible at all.
Sorry guys, these are just random thoughts that have crossed through my head.
I don't think we could because VZW would probably put a different bl on the Europe version. And I think I read our kernel doesn't have an option to unlock it any ways, so we would need a new kernel that gets past the sig check, then try to unlock it. Could be wrong though. Still learning this stuff haha

Verizon Wireless, who is an American Subsidiary wouldn't release a phone in Europe, lol. And Moto won't release the phone there because A. It is old news now, and B. They are predominantly a GSM region.

I think so. But I'm not completely sure. I need to go back and read the bl notes thread.
But there are ways around it, like the theory of 2nd init starting a different kernel. So maybe some one could find a way around and we wouldn't have to wait for the SBF. But I think the SBF would come faster, if we get one.

true, if the photon has a sbf that's been leaked then the DX2 has gotta have one as well, or at least that's a theory

Yeah! Maybe some one can find another exploit that'll work. See if you can pull the update again and copy the update file to your PC and upload it to mediafire and post a link to it for anybody who's interested. I'd see if I could help, but I'm not at a PC.

the only thing on 2.3.5 we found was a faster non-delayed lockscreen, but there may be more soon!
afaik the only markets the x2 was released was the united states and mexico.
I could be wrong though.
In the many threads we have on unlocking the bootloader there is much discussions that have been beaten to death about unlocking using other phones methods. Bottom line it just isn't possible due to kernel differences and hardware differences. Check the "project thread" in development section for more info about why.
there was a LOT of discussion about it around the time we got the ATRIX ports as well.
And the ring able to start a second kernel after ours starts needs kexec to work along with 2nd init. I don't believe 2nd init alone will be able to start a new kernel. People had worked on kexec I believe but it didn't go far. We need more of a team to get something like this wiring but as of now we have requested a couple dev teams to help us out but were told "not working on x2 at this time....busy with other projects" or something to that effect. Hopefully we will get that leaked sbf that has our unlock one day....I did hear a while ago from a little birdie that an sbf was found that had oem unlock option but it didn't work/unlock wasn't implemented so hopefully we are getting a little closer.
**don't ask me where I heard it...and don't ask for any links for proof...I have NO proof for what I say....just take it as it is....believe if u want or don't believe if u want....either way keep your eyes and ears peeled and keep trying to find us that unlock option....this phone could destroy many others if we get unlocked***

That would be just a wasted effort. Waiting on a different unlock just so your warranty with HTC won't be voided is nonsense. In my lifetime i never, ever used a manufacturer warranty on a cellphone when most people carry insurance.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Admittedly, it would be a waste of time, but it's not completely absurd to this that some people may still want an unlocked bootloader without HTCDev.
In my case, I got my phone set up the way that I wanted it before regaw_leinad got his rooter finished and before flashable modswere out. As of now, I don't want to go through HTCDev unlock and lose my non-backed up data. I didn't wait on the Regaw rooter (or unlock it myself) because I didn't want a new ROM on it anytime soon. Now that flashable mods are out, I wish that I would have unlocked then.
All of that said, I don't consider finding another exploit a priority. Devs shouldn't worry about it when it's done for them.
I'll bite the bullet and unlock it eventually.

Why not run tb to back up all your saved data, unlock, then use tb to restore it all?
I'm not saying that this is your solution but there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

[BL] Unlock without HTCDEV
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
The HTC Dev unlock method for the EVO3D was balls. It didn't do the trick and you had to spoof everything through Fastboot (cabled into your computer). That is a much more technical route and more dangerous for noobs. Also the recovery put on didn't always stick.
This time however with the E4GLTE the HTC Dev unlock is great and has provided everything you need to get rooted. There is a nice automated .exe (one single download) that will do the entire process for you. Takes about 10 minutes. Pretty sweet and you even get the super user apps pushed etc.
I've been kinda hesitant to unlock because of the warranty void, but a method like 18th.abn's method makes this noob even MORE hesitant! Unlocking my original evo 4g made this noob very nervous a couple years ago, but I love flashing roms and would really like to see what kind of performance can be unleashed on my new evolte...
There is also a one click method available now.

Ok, I've been using my Photon for a while now. I've been running the Rocko Rom with a locked bootloader. The other day it basically threw a fit so I went to reflash and it soft bricked. I finally got it back to stock and I'm considering unlocking the bootloader and trying CM. I used to run it on my Evo and thought it was pretty nice. My question is, are the unlocked Roms worth the bricking risk while unlocking the bootloader and if so, what does everyone think is the best Rom and it's pros and cons. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to give their opinion.
Honestly, if your phone isn't on the 2.3.5 ota with locked bootloader, unlock as there are many ROMs worth flashing. Rocko ROMs aren't supported anymore and there is little risk of brick if done correctly.

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently running a completely stock 2.3.4. Would you recommend a certain Rom that you've liked better than others? I've read that some lose 4g. If the Rom is good enough, I can handle that but I would really like to keep Netflix and ffc - I've read that some of the JB Roms lose those? Also, there are a ton guides for unlocking the bootloader, could someone direct me to a step by step reliable one as I'm still new to that aspect of phones. Thanks again.
-Unlocking the bootloader disables 4g regardless of what you flash. For unlocking the boot loader check the stickies. Lokifish Marz has a complete guide, maybe outdated on few things, but still the best reference on xda.
-As far as roms, peetrs hybrid in the Development sub forum has the most stability and netflix.
-If the Atrix ICS leak is of any use, we may see Netflix and the camcorder working soon in all the JB roms. I'm currently on CNA 3.6.6 and it runs like a champ despite having some difficulty flashing it without losing data (Wiping and Double flashing made it work for me). Lastly, almost all GB ROMs should install without a problem.

Great, thanks again. Do some of the Roms flashed bring back the 4g just out of curiousity or are they just gone? I'll probably try to unlock it over the next day or so and might come back here if I have questions as I don't have enough posts to ask questions in the dev forums. Thanks again.
Ok, little update. I've rooted my phone and everything worked fine. I then downloaded Titanium again and did a complete restore and have no again lost use of my home button. That is one of the original reasons that I attempted to reflash my rom. Problem is that I haven't put a ROM back on here, I've only rooted and restored.
4G will be lost when you unlock but is not a big deal for most people. You can get it back if you relock and flash back to stock.
Its not a ROM issue that causes 4G loss, its in flashing the bootloader through RSDlite. SBFing (like Odin and tar images) back to stock relocks the bootloader and makes it work again for some reason. I remember Joker saying its in the ril wrapper or something like that. What Kevets said lol

Hey, just thought id say congrats, and welcome to the real photon. I recommend you look at all of Th3bills roms over in the developers forum. Personally, if you are not too familiar with the unlocked and rooted capabilities yet, that you run AOKP. The biggest difference between the roms are the options provided to you in the settings, and i think you would find AOKP offers a lot without completely overwhelming you. Not to mention the roms are currently JellyBean builds, so its great if you like the latest and greatest out. Remember to always follow the flashing instructions step by step to ensure there are no force closes, etc. Enjoy your "new" photon. =)

Thanks. I actually found those very ROM's and I'm currently running miui.us. I can't believe how smooth it is. The biggest downside is that there is no app drawer so everything I download is on the homepages-too much like Apple, so I'm trying out Nova Launcher which is pretty slick so far. I'm still learning all of the jargon so would you mind explaining the difference between AOKP and others? Also, it really is like having a new phone, I can't believe the difference made between running locked roms and unlocked roms. It took my Antutu score from 50xx to 6687 lol.
Google Play Store (the latest versions) has the option to automagically put a shortcut/widget on the home screen(s) for new app installs, it's one of those things I can't stand personally and disable it. It's under the settings in Play, might help with that some.
The no app drawer is as miui feature, not something that can be disabled, I'm pretty sure
