[Q] Fragility of the Home Button? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I've never owned a phone with a physical home button, but I've heard how iPhone buttons can break over time. How do you guys think the S III's home button will hold up?

Shouldn't be too fragile. I've owned only phones with physical buttons and never had one break.

I can't speak on of it will break. I don't think anyone knows that. I can say that it feels pretty solid.

Why does the US version not have the physical button?

I absolutely hate phones that don't have at least one physical button near the thumb (a-la iPhone).
This is what originally drew my to the SGSII.
So, I've been wondering, what is the thinking behind removing it and using the 4 "touch screen" buttons in it's place?
Is there some sort of market research that states American's don't like the button?
Is that why the vast majority of Android devices only have the "touch" buttons?
They don't want to look like iPhone
^^ and make Apple's case of shameless copying against Samsung even stronger!
Is that the official/real reason?
I personally like the screen to have no holes at all, like in Optimus Black.
In my opinion the hole for home button and top speaker in phones attract dirt and maybe make the screen less stronger.
But, I wonder what happens when touching home accidentally, will it show lock screen? If it is physical button you cannot push it accidentally. It must be frustrating that the screen is always awake when home is touched.
From a UX perspective:
When I reach for my phone, I usually find the home button with my thumb and press it to turn the screen on before I can even see the screen -- so when I can finally see the screen it's ready for me to unlock.
This is how I naturally first engage with the device -- not having the physical button interrupts this process and trying to find the side with the power button isn't as natural or quick for me.

The power button is too soft?

I found my radar(uk sim-free)'s power button is too soft , i even cannot feel whether i press it or not~
does anyone has the same feeling ?
I have a Tmo radar and agree the power button is very low profile. I kind of like that, once you use the phone for a little bit, you know where the button is. I wouldn't mind if it were a bit stiffer, but i'll get used to it.
I do not like my buttons to be flushed so I bought a case that covers the buttons and has distinct button marks on the surface and I'm happy now.

Power/Lock button

Is it just me, or is the power/lock button annoyingly hard to press sometimes. I wish it had a more noticeable "click" to it, or was raised just slightly more than it is.
I've had the phone since it was released and I love it, but I was just curious what other people think.
it is harder to press than my inc2 was, definitely. a minor thing, but yes, i've noticed it as well.
It surely is a pain. Coming from the OG Inc it was a bit difficult to get use to the power button being on the other side.
This is one of the good reasons to root so you can get wake with the volume buttons! It works so much better.

what he said. and my volume buttons are just as recessed as my power button so its lose/lose with me lol
I agree, I feel that it's also a little bit too recessed that you have to press it longer or harder. It may just be that it's new unit.
I have to say, having used Razr, I am a little bit disappointed with Rezound
I really wish the buttons were like the inc 2, those ones are the best that I've used on a phone. I wanna try to raise these ones, since I've already taken it apart multiple times, but I really don't know how I'd even do it...

I wish it was easier to press like other HTC phones.

One of the only reason I use my otterbox case is for the buttons on the case are so much larger.
i was close to getting a commuter, but it was so bulky i didn't even bother..but damn those buttons were great

I agree 100%, the power button setup has always annoyed the hell out of me.
Whoever designed that setup should lose their job.
Nothing was worse than the sunken power buttons of the thunderbolt. I am amazed that wasn't mentioned yet.

this is why I avoid the power button.
I use volume keys to turn on, and a widget to turn the screen off.
works wonderfully.
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who thought this lol

worried about my power button

my power button doesnt seem to stick out alot. it comes out very minutely.
is it supposed to be like that?
thanks
That's what she said!
Ok in all seriousness, I'd say my power button protrudes maybe .5mm at most. There seems to be a great variance in how the buttons are on this phone. Mine isn't loose at all either. (she also said that)
I just got Sprint to replace my previous phone because I thought there was something weird about my power button being so sunken. The replacement arrived in the same exact condition. I'm over it and will just have to get used to it. I'm assuming it's normal.
Sent from my badass Galaxy SIII.
looking from the back side of the phone, the power button comes out very little. from the font side of the phone, the power button is pretty much level with the bezel.
Mine is perfect. It's out far enough to feel, yet not too far to be in the way.
I think it's a Samsung Galaxy S design. I had the GS, the GS2, and now the GS3. All 3 generations had the power button that seemed to be sunken in.

I got one with a button that felt "squishy" when I pressed it. I'm coming from a Nexus S 4G and that button was nice and clicky. I exchanged the phone and I got one with a much nicer; "clickier" button. That was my only real concern... other than that, I'm not concerned with how far it protrudes...

Volume button

Got the tablet today, my up volume button barely protrudes, but the annoying part is I can barely feel it. I can barely press it, and i have to click it with my nail. I can use my thumb too if I try but there is just no 'click' or feedback
Is this normal? Anyone else ? Wondering if I should replace it or live with it
Thankss
please list model, color and place of purchase.
Mine is the same. 32GB White version direct from Google. I can use it without my nail but still barely protrudes.
Yeah same, 32GB black from Google. I have to take a second or two to press the volume up at times..
Its a 16 GB Black, from best buy
Its pretty annoying, not sure its worth exchanging yet. I always get some bad first batch luck (Nexus 7 and screen lift etc. hah)
Im constently searching for the buttons
Maybe a software solution can help.
A toggle in the quick pull down menu.
Anyway i will be putting a case around it.
Lets see wat happens.
Oh my word... Will it ever end?! I have never read so many negative things about a device in my life. I have two of these things en-route to me, and honestly, I'm feeling like I've just wasted my money. What a let-down this has been. I can only hope and pray that somehow, mine don't suffer from any of these issues. Judging by the number of people complaining, I can't see that happening.
Mine protrudes actually quite a bit and I don't need nails to activate it. Seems like there is a lot of variation here... Why can't QC be higher? Seems like they rushed this out tbh, and software doesn't seem entirely finished either. Random lags are annoying, ART doesn't really feel any faster than Dalvik.
Same. Just got my nexus 9 and the volume buttons are so hard to click... I got the n9 16gb black from hk play store... Also got some light bleed on edge of screen. And it gets quite hot in the middle after using for a while.
Kinda disappointed as I have the nexus 7 and 10 and thought it'd be a worthy addition to the family...
Hopefully some of these issues can get fixed

I have the same issue. Volume down and power buttons both have a tactile feel and 'click' when they are pushed. My volume up button is recessed slightly lower and has no 'click' to it. If not for the volume notification I would not even know that I was pressing it. The entire volume bar is slanting inward to the point where it is almost flush with the frame at the edge of the volume up side. The power key also has this same slant in it. Combined with the fact that the processor runs very hot (compared to my n7 and n5 and other android devices), I'm starting to feel like I got suckered by this whole "Premium Android Device" pitch...
I have the 32gb white wifi model
same issue
16gb black wifi from best buy. power button not completely straight with some play in it that wiggles. up volume button more flush than the down and hard to press easily without good feedback

I tried convincing myself it was ok.
It's not. A $500+ device should not have the flaws that I experienced.
Micro-stutters in the O/S, even outside of apps.
A volume up button that is practically inside the tablet, requiring a fingernail to depress. No tactile feedback on press.
Plugging USB in and attempting a file transfer makes the device unresponsive and a corner of the device heats up so much that there is no way it's normal (it's not scalding hot... but it is "very" warm).
lightbleed
This is a device I paid close to $600 for after tax+s/h. It practically performs worse than my 2012 Nexus 7. Completely unacceptable.
RMA for refund has been approved.
Buying this device right now is a total lottery/crapshoot.
My advice: RMA your device.
Manufacturing batch of my unit: HT4AB (32GB - via google play store purchase at Oct 17 launch)
Same here, lower volume and power button are clicky, but the top volume is so flush and have zero feedback. White 32gb playstore Canada. So far, lightbleed, volume rocker, lockscreen loop when charging, screen flickering, noise from the top speaker when closing the camera app and random heating when browsing in Chrome... RMA!
Got mine today, volume button is flush with the device at the top. Tried talking to Play store about rma, but they refused saying it cannot be done unless it stops working.
Nexus 9 power/volume button.
I am in the same situation. Pushing those buttons without looking is a challenge enough. Now, try taking screenshots. Nearly impossible. When pushing the buttons with a flat surface like end of a pen, function will not trigger, because actual click happens when the button is already inside of the frame. I did try asking Google for RMA, but because buttons are still functional, warranty doesn't apply. I love the device, but for more than $500, it should not have problems like this.
I have to say that ios system is better
Perhaps it's flush on purpose who you don't accidentally press it while in landscape mode? I hate the tablets that have the buttons sticking out...makes the buttons easy to accidentally press.
Also, what's up with all these trolls with less than 5 posts.

Haha, nice first post.
Same issue here. I'm waiting until I can guarantee the purchase of a B or even C serial number build down the road. So annoying.
