[Q] SIM card undetected(empty efs folder)!!! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My previous phone was Walkman W8 and i used to root the phone and install custom rom and stuff and i was using the custom romed phone for a long time..
Then i got Samusng Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G and stared custom roming and rooting stuff.. After losts of soft bricks and hardbricks i managed to install rootbox rom with codeworkxx custom kernel in it..
But when i booted the the phone then the phone didnt detect sim card i tried restoring to original OS it sill didnt work..
Then i came across efs problems in xdaforums.. So i tried to use efs pro v1.7.14, backed up my efs and tries to restore them.. It didnt work then i downloaded a efs.img online for my phone and tried to restore my efs with that.. I didnt work also..
I tried to restore my backup and efs pro showed me this error...
Checking Device Connection... Device Connected!
Checking ROOT Access... Okay.

I ended up in empty efs folder with some upgaddr file...
I appreciate any kind of advice.. I am a semi-noob...Now i am using my old SE Walkman W8 till this gets fixed...
Thank You

take it to warranty
I have the same issue and i made lot and lot of reasearch about the EFS folder, IMEI recovery, etc etc, and i concluded that if you still have warranty return the phone to stock and take it to warranty (mine is with samsung warranty since yesterday).
I'll update you if they could fix it.

So I guess there is no other way then..
Anyway thanks for the reply.
My flash count is 7 will they accept my warranty if I restore the phone to its original self and give them...
Is there Anyother Way using Odin to repair my phone..
Badly want my s2 back

OK. I looked here and there and got my efs folder back...
But still my Sim dosent work and also have a problem with baseband version, my phone says base-band version unknown..

You need to flash another modem, but before that enable Flight mode.

Well if you still want to put your phone in Samsung for warranty flash an ICS ROM and then use Chainsfire Triangle Away application to reset your Flash count.
That way you wont have problems with Samsung.
You have the application in Market or in a post in this forum, market its 1.75 € if you get it from the forum its free.

Guys thanks for the replies...
:fingers-crossed:
But some how i got my S2 to detect my SIM card by flashing stock modem..:good:
The modem that worked for me was DZKL3 stock modem... now my unknown baseband is solved.. And my phone detects the simcard but still not perfect have lots of bugs..But even though my cell detects my sim card when i try to call or sms i get "Not registered on a Network" warning...
Now i am stuck up there....What to do from here

Have you tried to switch operator in cellular networks settings?

Yes, it says unable to connect when i select my operator...
But the sim is perfectly working in my other phones..

Bump... Just checking for solutions from xda members...:highfive: By the way I flashed full stock ROM wiped SD card all stock setting... Still no use... Just "unable to connect t network" error popping up...

Is your IMEI 004999010640000 ? Whatever you do, don't post your IMEI (important) if it's different from this, a yes/no answer will do.

YES!

In that case you have the generic IMEI. Your original IMEI is gone. Sounds like your carrier blocks access to devices with non-unique IMEI's (lots of carriers around the world do this; some don't).
Restore your EFS backup if you have one (lots of threads on here detailing how to do this), if you don't have one it's either a service centre job (which you'll probably end up paying for), or you can contact a member on here called Odia by PM who might be able to recover your EFS/IMEI for you (for a small donation; much cheaper than paying Samsung/an authorised repairer to fix it).

Thanks Mate:highfive: this helped me a lot! Hope this solves my problem...:victory:

Sorry for posting this again...
I think i already know my imei number so is there anyway that i can restore my imei number through terminal, or using an external application....
If so can u guys help me... Thanks...

Without an EFS backup, no. Only Samsung/authorised repairer can fix it (Odia can sometimes as well with whatever form of magic he uses to recover them).
IMEI's are a unique device identifier, I.E your IMEI is unique to your phone. Changing IMEI's or transferring them to other devices is illegal in most jurisdictions throughout the world.

try this

I lost my efs backup thats y i am stuck up here... otherwise i would have restored it long time ago...

I didn't say that. I mentioned it because whenever we get these threads on here, the conversation invariably turns to 'can I change my IMEI or transfer it to another phone', that's all.
You only have the two options. I'd recommend you contact Odia via PM & be patient.

[Q] mobile network not available problem

I got my samsung galaxy s2 this month. Everything is ok until the day before yesterday. When I try to make a call, it says "mobile network not available". I go to the setting--->wireless and network--->mobile networks--->select/unselect use packet data, there is no icon indicator it is activate as it should be. I tried the factory data reset, but the problem is still unsolved. Thus far, call/message stop working. Wifi is OK. Do you have any suggestion on that? Thanks.
Please check your IMEI, and your Baseband version.
If they are not available, you will need to restore your EFS, if you do not have a backup, you will have to visit Samsung Service Center, or repair the EFS yourself.
Do not use another phone's copy of EFS as it is illegal to modify or clone your IMEI number in most (if not all) countries. You can however use someone's EFS backup, and mod it with your phone's IMEI if you know how to.
Hi,
I'm in this horrible situation: no baseband, no IMEI. By ny chance, do you know how to get a EFS backup and change to my IMEI?
I appreciate any help. I was trying to make a call, the person on the other side could not hear me. I reboot and...lost my baseband. Checked IMEI, it was also missing.
Thanks

have u solved your problem? I got something quite similar...
In my sad experience, your only chance is going to Samsung and ask them to restore your IMEI. From what Samsung in BRazil told me, it should be in the same country of the device. As my device was imported from the UK, Samsung Brazil could not do anything, as IMEI database is Country restricted. I believe this info is correct as the representative was very helpful. It did not look like a lame excuse. If your device is not under warranty, it should not cost you more than U$ 50. That was the price here, and everything in Brazil is so expensive these days.
My solution was to buy another Galaxy S II in Brazil as it had been released here in between the time I imported mine and the time it got screwed.
Wish you good luck.

I have the same problem, but if I take out the sim and put in another phone, it works, and if I took another sim (from another operator) and put it in sgs2, it also works, just this sim not working in this sgs2. Is this operator controlled by apple and trying to block sgs2 devices?

Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Install the wipe version of this ROM (CheckRom v4)

I've got the same problem...
does anyone have came up with a good solution?
Try this
Root your phone.
Go to efs folder in root. Go to imei folder in that you will find a file named mps_code. Edit it using root browser from market. Erase everything and type your original imei no. and save it.
Reboot your phone and now check.
Cannot guarantee it but it worked on mine. Good luck

All I had to do to go to the Access Point Name ('APN') settings and change the Authentication Type from its default 'Not Set' to 'None'. After that, my internet is working fine.
It would appear this may be an issue common to a number of Chinese phones, so hopefully this will be of use to other people in the same situation.

Samsung sii - no imei , no baseband, no network

Hi
i was a happy customer with my SII, which i brought from india, everything was fine, until a week back, when suddenly my SII shows no signal, no IMEI and no baseband
i didnt flashed or changed anything ...
1. i tried using different SIM - no use
2. this sim works in other phones
3. factory reset - no use
4. all is done...
**** I DONT HAVE A EFS BACKUP ***********
please give me a detailed fix route for this issue. as i cannot take the phone to INDIA in next 4 months to get is repaired. i have my warranty still. but thought that something can be done from my side to get it fixed. please please lemme know how to fix this! :-(
I had this happen to me. I hadn't taken an efs backup and thought I was screwed, but I found an auto backup on my SD card called EFS_BACKUP. Check if you have this, if you do, use GSII_Repair from the market to restore it.

If your EFS is not total screwed and your nv_data backup is valid its possible GSII_Repair from market will work for you ...
Once you have tried all the guides and still in the same situation, check out this post

I tried already flashing the Stock ROM once, and hence i dont know whether there is still a backup of EFS is in place....
can anyone take a little bit more time in explaining the steps to solve this,
like does a backup from another gSII will help the purpose... ?
please let me know more details, i will be thankfull like anything.
How come this problem happens, when we do a complete flash does the EFS folder get replaced or the the flash doesnot affect the EFS part at all?
i feel its very strange to see such kinda problem..

what you call its as total screwed??
Will a backup from another Samsung Galaxy SII work ? for me?
EFS is a folder would be having NV_data and some other files. he's asking that the entire EFS got screwed or just some parts.?
I tried complete flash, means baseband,Kernel and system including User data reset.
i really confused about the relationship between the EFS folder and the IMEI,basband, blah blah...
EFS folder is nothing to with your blah blah nor your modem /baseband .
It is essential the details of the phone and its sole identity that is signified by the IMEI number individual to each phone . This IMEI number is used in the initial handshake each time you make a connection .
Lost or stolen phones can have their IMEI blocked once on the block list handshake is denied by the networks = no connection .

GSII_Repair tool from Market, Four steps in that tool, am Done ...........all is well now.
Really really helpful tool. Thanks to all who suggested this TOOL ;-)

u mean is that a nw problem? nothing to do with the phone?
its really p***d off me for fixing that issue..
handshaking happens only after the phone detects the sim card. but here phone doesnot detect the sim at all. so is ur point still valid?
my phone was brought from samsung authorized dealer so how come its possible to happen so?
looks like EFS is the area where full flash no longer having access to it!! if not then a complete flash should have sorted that out.
EFS are reference files containing the imei and phone unique info, when these files gets corrupted, then phone will b helpless.
though u have root access u'll never get RW permission inside the folder.
there should be a automatic recovery, the SW should have had in place if there are corruption. poor implementation.... bah...

[Q] GalaxSim unlock problem

Hi guys,
I've messed up and need help. Here goes...
I had a locked phone on the 3 network , a S3 I9300; and I wanted to unlock it. Simple I thought to myself.....anyways, I downloaded the voodoo unlocker after rooting successfully with Odin. Nothing happened it wouldn't read my T-Mobile sim card and I can't remember what I did exactly but I did press some buttons on that app in attempt to unlock the sim. I then realised that it was not compatible with the S3 and then I proceeded to use the GalaxSim app. I had to download busybox for that, after doing that I attempted to unlock it. Yipeee! Phone unlocked and everything green.....but not. I still couldn't register on any network(using manual method as well). I had even cleaned my SIM card(but not tried another sim card). I then unrooted the phone with stock rom and unrooted again to use GalaxSim......and pressed backup accidentally! That I means I am now with an unlocked efs folder as my default efs, I didn't check the IMEI number to see if it changed, but how I return it all to normal? Has my IMEI number changed or would it not show IMEI if I overwrote the EFS folder?
I need help, I'm confused.
What phone you post I9100 ?????
No or broken EFS then just restore your backed up EFS .
jje
sorry i9300.
No, the EFS I had was overwritten with the newer version when I reinstalled the app. Now I have only one EFS and that's the one currently installed(which says the phone is unlocked). The phone is not registering on any network. Is this a baseband issue or a unlock issue? The app is showing unlocked, it shows all the networks, but some are written as"forbidden networks" and I can't connect to any.
By the looks of it, the simlock will never return.

You cannot update an EFS with a newer version you can only restore your original backed up EFS .
Does the IMEI match that under the battery if not its a service centre repair .
jje
Oh and the platform is jellybean.
The imei is the same, but it is still "sim unlock". How can i redo the process?
your phone should be fine you restore your original imei or just copied your origanal imei again probaly for the best as you know you have a back up of it now
chances are your phones unlocked now and probaly just need to register the sim card with T-mobile to activate it
should always place the back up of your efs somewhere else aswell incase things do go wrong mem cards can corrupt
Both sims that i've used are contract. I can't register any. They all say disconnected on status settings.

another Imei lost problem

Hi guys, I know this is an another post on the same problem, but I follow all trhead on this argument without result.
I have an samsung galaxy s2 whit null emai. I lost it! But I have an old backup of EFS (I thinks it is corrupt because if I restore it, does not change anything )
I tried to restore whitouth success from this backup
I tried factory restore
I tried to recreate the EFS folder whit your two guides
I tried to flash the original firmware from odin whit auto reboot - repartition - F. reset time (I use the file from original firmware but I do not get even a generic imei, it stay null)
I don't know what I can do, and I can't pay 100$ for jtag box only for re enter my own emai
I have another samsung galaxy s2 where the software working (my sister's phone) but has hardware problems. Can I make a full dump of rom and pass it in my phone?
there is a way?
P.S. sorry for my bad english.
updating: I tried to put the EFS folder from my sister's phone to mine but the imei still remains null.
P.S. Sorry for the wrong section
Trying to put the EFS folder from another phone into yours will never work, and changing the IMEI is illegal in most places anyway if you use a particular piece of hardware that mobile repair shops/Samsung authorised repairers use to 'write' the IMEI back to the phone if you bork it.
If you don't have a good EFS backup, it's a service centre job normally, but there are quite a few threads on here which claim to be able to fix it. You might want to look at those; I can see you've obviously tried some things, unless you want to take it in to be repaired, keep trying stuff.
I don't recommend you try to fix this yourself with a JTAG box/similar for two reasons:-
1) You'll be paying for something you'll never use again
2) If you mess it up, it will be a service centre job anyway (or if you slip with the soldering iron, you could damage the phone beyond repair) which you'll pay for plus the cost of the box which you'll never user again.
So take it to someone who knows what they're doing.
No. Trying to copy details from another phone will not fix the problem because the IMEI is a unique hardware identifier which is assigned to the particular radio in your phone.
Same here!
I purchased this phone from a eBay seller and had it shipped to India. Didn't compare IMEI with the one under the battery (stupid, I know) when opening the package, or before flashing to JB firmware. Next thing I know, phone calls are not going and emergency calls only available, even though data network is working fine.
What I did after that (no particular order):
1. Flashed with stock GB, ICS and JB
2. Rooted
3. Tried fixing by steps in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021&highlight=recovery+IMEI
4. Tried fixing using SGII_Repair
5. Tried fixing using HC-kTool
All failed!
Next option looks like buying a SRS licence and changing IMEI to what is there under the battery. Would this work safely, and restore order to normal in phone? Anyone!! Phone is perfectly new, no signs of use, so assume that I was shipped a proper piece.

No no, I do not want to change imei! I want to put my imei xD and I think this is not illegal, I tried with my sister's efs only for using an clean EFS folder where I can work, I know all EFS are proprietary for each device.

Galaxy S6 G925F- "No Signal" After M IMEI Had Been Changed

Messed up with my G925F!!!
Hello , my phone suddenly was not able to make or receive any calls or joining 3G/4G network or SMS. In other words, I was out of service although my SIM had not problems to enter the PIN password and I could see signal bars.
After a little research I discovered that my IMEI and S/N number had been changed! Especially, the IMEI number became 350000000000006 (fake one) And I believe this is the reason my signal went off!
So , I just managed to download smart switch from samsung and choose "emergency software recovery and initialization -> device initialization" in an attempt to revert it to stock rom and settings (is this method unroot the phone too?)
But after this long downloading finished , the phone didn't boot , I only see the samsung galagy s6 edge logo stuck!!!!
So , I decided to root the phone again , following the guide here (link-->), zidroid.com/how-to-install-twrp-root-galaxy-s6-edge-on-android-5-1-1/
(in short words , I installed the twrp recovery with odin and I flashed 2 zip files required, from an usb-otg-flash drive, via the twrp recovery install button) and then the phone booted normaly , but the problem with the signal and wrong IMEI was still there!
I feel that I am on dead end , I don't know what to do , I am thinking about sending it to the location I bought it but I am afraid that the warranty is lost.
Please help me restore my phone back to normal
After repeating the whole procedure several times , now my phone does not recognize SIM card at all , as if it was never inserted , wtf?

So you mean that there isn't any way of backing up the IMEI number first before rooting or changing a rom/kernel/recovery to the phone in order not allowing this IMEI bricking happen again by means of restoring from its backup?
I googled a lot and some people suggest that they can backup EFS in some way. What is EFS exactly and how it is related to IMEI?
Also wouldn't be a good idea to find a way to backup my entire OS/firmware (not just IMEI/EFS) before doing anything , in case to save money and avoid the same bricking?
And yes , I have sent the phone to samsung service , it will cost me around 320 euros , because they discovered I changed kernel/rooted the device , and they will change motherboard.
I cannot help the phone without being rooted , I love rooting but I cannot understand why suddenly IMEI got bricked.....does it worth to take risk and root my phone again? But I want IMEI or entire OS backups first before doing that and I don't know how to achieve this without rooting first...
Please help me if you could.
You can backup your full os using twrp recovery
Also your IMEI
In SAMSUNG devices imei number stored in efs partition that's why people asking take efs backup before flashing any Rom

Me too! I have the exact same IEMI number! Mine stopped working after about a month. I tried to return to seller no response. I tried to send phone back they would not accept phone, so it is on it's way back to me. Once I get it back I will try what you did.
I have taken it to factory settings 3 times no luck. I will try your process once I get me phone back.
Thanks!

I did contact one of those fellows a reputable one that can change your IEMI. Well once he heard that crazy IEMI number, he said because it was changed once before to something like he doubted he could change it again and save my phone. To try he charges 100 US plus I have shipping there and back. Yikes.
So any advice you can give me I would truly appreciate.
Thanks!

Mine went down recently with the exact same IMEI and no SN. TWRP was failing to restore the efs partition damaging the files in the process. Long story short, I had to manually extract the efs files, copy them across and fiddle about with permissions but I'm working again.
That nugget rings true - always backup the efs before changing anything.
But for that reputable fellow to say that the IMEI had been changed before because of what it had become, and insinuating that the imei couldn't be changed more than once was complete twaddle. I wouldn't trust him near any of my phones.
On a lighter note I'm sure there's got to be a member on here would sort it for beer tokens
Happened to me, I thought it was faulty ROM and all but then I realized it was simply apn setting. Resetting it to default did the trick. It can be found in Settings > Mobile networks > Access Point Names

Since this thread is quite old and people keep answering , I want to end it like this:
Back then I didn't avoid to pay about 300 euros to replace its motherboard to a samsung shop. But I learned lately that the issue was due to an app called "USB OTG Helper" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.shajul.usbotg&hl=en) which allows you to insert NTFS USB flash drives to your OTG phone but also enables a system partition , including EMS files to be visible.
And you can guess what happened next , I deleted this system partition which this app made it visible and yes , my IMEI was gone!!! After some months , I repeated the same delete thing , but previously I had backed up via TWRP the EFS and MODEM partitions. My phone lost IMEI again , as expected , but after restoring EFS and MODEM , the IMEI was back!!
To sum up , never delete files or partitions that look like "system" like bluetooth and imei folders when you are root AND always have a backup of all your rom via twrp or something else before changing/deleting/flashing anything related to your system.
