[Q] Can not create a New Folder ~ SOLVED - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I have found a problem with creating a New Folder.
Tap the menu key and select 'Create Folder'.
This then creates a new folder and asks for a name.
You then name the folder and finish.
However, each and every time you then try to open up the folder it drops back to wanting you to rename the folder.
In other words you simply can not open the newly created folder.
Has anyone else come across this or found a solution?

Nope works fine here
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

So it works fine for you norpan111
This is now becoming annoying......
EDITED
Sussed it and how so embarrassing..
Once the folder is created you then have to place an item directly into it.
In other words you can not open an empty folder.

[Q] How to make Archos Gallery not display .hidden items?

On my other Android devices I can simply put a . in front of folders that I don't want the gallery to display (such as avatar pics and shortcut icons and what not) and it wouldn't. Then I could use eStrongs file manager or similar to browse to them when I needed them. I popped a 2GB MicroSD card I had laying around that already had some files on it from another Android device and ALL of the folders with images are showing up in the gallery... even those with a . in front of them.
Is there any way on an Archos 101 to set the Gallery to NOT display items inside of a '.' folder? Seems this is default with other Android devices so I'm hoping it's at least an option on these.
Ideas?
Thanks for the help.
Moved to general as not android development.

Create a 0kb file called .nomedia. Place it in the folder of items you don't want shown. That should work.

Doesn't appear to work. I searched before posting this and found a few things about .nomedia and thought maybe you had to rename the actual folders w/the images within to .nomedia to hide them? Seems like this would be a PITA way to go about it.
Am I doing something wrong? Any other ideas?

It should work just fine. Did you name the file specifically .nomedia? No ext name. Did you reboot to see if that helps? Did you put the file in the folder of the items you don't want showing?
Here is some more specific instructions (I didn't write them):
1. On your computer, open Notepad or any other text editor
2. Save the blank file with the filename “.nomedia”, make sure that the Save as type is set as “All Files” instead of “Text documents”
3. Copy that file to the folder on your SD card containing picture files you don’t want to show up in the gallery. (Example: If you want to block aDyno image files from coming up, place the .nomedia file in the sdcard/aDyno folder)
4. Reboot your phone and hopefully the unwanted files should no longer be viewable.

Alright, w/more information I tried it again. I created a file just using a file browser on the device. This time around I created a file in Notepad on my PC called .nomedia and made sure the filetype was set to 'all files' before saving and that there was no extension (deleted the .txt) and then copied that file to my Archos 101. I first tried in the folder on the SD card that contained all the folders in question. I rebooted and it didn't seem to help. I then copied the file into each folder and rebooted. Still no dice. Whenever I open Gallery all the folders and images are still there. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to clear a cache or something or delete any tumbnails or ?? I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I keep searching and am coming up with nothing. This was SO easier on my other Android devices as I just put a period in front of the name of the folders I didn't want to display and it was done. Simple as that. This is a royal PITA and I feel I'm not making any progress.

Do either of these allow you to simply hide w/o signing in or encryption? I found two other programs & both required this which I don't want to deal with. Just seems odd that others are saying this is working for them & I'm not having any luck. I don't mind installing an app as long as it works but I'm not sure why my Archos 101 would be different than the rest.

[Q] Gallery Generating Items?

I've been a lurker on the forums for a while now and I think this will be my first official post...
I'm having an issue with the Gallery where it would make copies of items in my Gallery. For instance: I will have a folder called "Pictures" and inside this folder I will have other folders for various photos and stuff. Sometimes when I'm in the Gallery it will show 3 of the same picture of all my photos. Whats up with this?
It's a bug with some phones running Froyo. In your DCIM folder on your SD card there is a file named ".thumbnails" and the gallery keeps copying the files in there. I have found a pretty simple fix for this. (I'm sure there is an easier way but this is how I did it)
Open your Files app and make a new folder named ".nomedia"
Connect your phone to your computer and mount it.
On your computer move the ".nomedia" file into the .thumbnails file found in the DCIM folder. (Make sure you move it and not copy at this point. If that file stays there you won't see any pictures / music etc.)
Now copy the the same ".nomedia" file and paste it in to the .thumbnails file found on your external SD card in the DCIM folder (provided there is one, if not, don't worry about this part. You'll only have that file if your pictures automatically are stored on your external SD card.)
Unmount your phone and after the media scanner is done you should have no copies and never have the problem again.

+1 rramey23 is correct this is what i found to be true as well
Thanks! This helps a lot. I just have a question. I'm how come I'm repeating the step twice? Would it be easier if I just create a folder named ".nomedia" on my computer in the DCIM folder or will this have to be done through the filer app?
Nevermind I see what you mean. Will this make it so that Gallery doesn't read files from within this folder even if there are files there?
You have to do it from the File app because you can't create a file on your computer that has a . before the name. At least I know I can't on my computer. Plus when you do that on your phone it changes the "folder" you just made, into a ".nomedia file." As far as I know we can't do that on the computer.
Having a .nomedia file in a folder will make both the gallery and media player not look there for files. But you can still access them through the Files app.
Hope that all makes sense.

So will it rename the ".nomedia" to ".nomedia file."? I put it in the .thumbnail folder and it still shows dupes.
I put the ".nomedia" folder that I created into ".thumbnails" but it still shows the files in Gallery.
You're not creating a folder called .nomedia, it's a file called .nomedia. You can create an empty text document and name it .nomedia, or an even easier way is to do a search on your phone's SD card for an existing one and just copy and paste it into the .thumbnails folder. I did a search on mine and had over 60 .nomedia files.
When you make a folder named .nomedia, it changes to a FILE called .nomedia. The Files app doesn't see that newly created file. Which is why you need to use the computer to copy/move the file where you actually need it.

My .nomedia is still a folder.
Hi,
Try this easy step from philyew on T-Mo forum:

Hope it helps.
You can also use sgs tools and run the clean thumb script.

I searched for other .nomedia files and copied them from application folders and stuff but still doesn't work. I'm still seeing 3 of the same pictures.

So I have just found that I have 2 copies of all my pictures in my gallery. I tried running the script from SGS Tools, no go. Cleared the data in Media Storage and that cleared it up. What a pain...

[Q] installed app. app disapeared. cant reinstall

ok.... I have Samsung Fascinate.
PWGB2.0 beta3 ROM
I found the zip containing on here(XDA) somewhere containing the BuddiesNow app for my phone and installed it. I then found the BuddiesNow for Vibrant tweaked for the Fascinate. I went to /system/app and located my BuddiesNow I had placed in there 1st and renamed it .bak
I then placed the Vibrant BuddiesNow app in the /system/app folder.
It worked great. I discovered I liked the Vibrant BuddiesNow app much better.
*************
ok... now my issue. I picked my phone up ealier this week and went to use my Vibrant BuddiesNow app and it was gone. I then long pressed the blank screen and pressed Widgets from the list that popped up. I scroll thru the list and BuddiesNow does not show up in the list.
I then open my file manager and navigate to /system/app folder and BuddiesNow is not in there. Not even the .bak file version.
I then go to my SDcard and find the copy of the Vibrant BuddiesNow app I had originally stored in a folder there and tried to copy it to the /system/app folder. The error message pops up saying that the file already exist and cant paste the file here.
I then booted into recovery, tried wiping partition cache and dalvik cache.
That did not help any. Got same result when I tried to move the file to /system/app folder again.
I then thought I would be cleaver and rename the Vibrant BuddiesNow in my SDcard folder to [BuddiesNow.apk.grid] and then move it to the /system/app folder. AND THEN AFTER PLACING IN THE /system/app FOLDER, RENAME IT TO .APK
That did not work either! It also diappeared.... now I have BuddiesNow.apk,
BuddiesNow.apk.bak, BuddiesNow.apk.grid, all in the /system/app folder and all invisible.
I had the file manager settings to SHOW HIDDEN FILES from the beginning.
I also have tried the SEARCH function in the file manager but it shows no results. I have tried installing many file manager apps and attempting to see if a different file manager would show the files but none did.....
I tried to write this episode as short as possible.. this is the best I could do to cover al the bases...
what could be a fix????????? PLEASE ADVISE! I LOVE MY BUDDIESNOW!
Come one...anyone? I love my buddiesnow app. Please help me out here
hard to belive
hard to believe someone has not seen this before and has an idea how to fix it...
I love this forum anyways

OVERWRITE FILE is not an option to choose... in this particular problem with this
particular apk disappearance, the option to overwrite is not there.
I have had the overwrite option at other times but not now with this issue fo who know what reason.
I am going to factory reset I guess and start over.
hasn't anyone else had the same issue?
Not sure if this would be helpful but when I had a similar issue I just used titanium backup and found the file that "already existed" and removed it. Also, you can use any file manager that allows you to sort by date modified and look for any buddynow files that may be in a folder that you didn't think about looking in
did you maybe moved the app to your sdcard ? sometimes app's widgets wont show if you move them to sdcard. If you did so move it back to the phone's memory

I used the search function in the various file managers I have tried & even searched the entire phone (and also the /system/app )for he disappeared files and got no results...when I get some time next week I am going to sit down and factory reset my phone and start all over.
if it works I will not try the vibrant version of buddiesnow on my phone again,
I will just use the fascinate version of buddiesnow. (the vibrant version sure was nicer tho)....

[Q] Data Folders on Home Screen

Is there an app or widget that will show me what files are located in a folder? For example I have a folder called DOCUMENTS. I want a widget that will allow me to scroll through the files in the folder, pick a file and open it in one of the Office apps. I know I can go to a File Manager app and hit a few directories and get it that way I am but just looking for a short cut to a specific folder.
I am ONLY looking for a single folder that I have my project files in for work.
Here is an app that kind of does what I am looking for (searches the SDCARD for predefined files) but doesn't work on ICS as I tried it.
Data Folder

I solved my problem of putting a shortcut for a folder or file on the home screen.
The answer is here:
Shortcut for Folders-Files on Home Screen
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1463707
I am a little surprised this functionality isn't built into Android already for shortcuts or in the more "popular" file explorer apps.

[Q] delete strange folder created by Easy Unrar

I installed Easy Unrar, Unzip & Zip from Goolge play to unzip a zip folder on my phone. It didn't work at all, besides, it created a folder (with strange character name) which can not be deleted. It's 0 byte, can be opened but is empty. Can not create anything inside. I tried deleting with Astro file manager, nothing happened, the folder still there. I tried deleting from my PC, it said the 'Cannot delete the folder. Storage is protected. Remove the write-protection and try again'. The strange folder is on my internal memory. I don't have a memory card installed. Please help.
I can delete any other things on my phone. The file name of the zip I tried to unzip is not English, which I suspect might be the problem?

help
ive encountered this too. can someone help us or did you already fix this? I think it has a chinese character like.apk but when you open. it opens as if it was a folder. but you cannot delete, rename, move or copy. even through desktop operations failed. and also its shows the date accessed in a year 1970. i tried to edit my date settings hoping that I might delete it but this note 2 has a minimum of year 2000. help thanks
Try to install clean master and open it. Press junk file and standard. Allow it to scan. It shld have a residual folders place. Just scan it with standard and advanced. See if it is still thr. Btw. U can unzip zip files with File Expert.
