I have had 2 different vibrants now and they both have done the same thing. I haven't been able to isolate the problem to any one thing so I ask if there is anyone else experiencing the same problem. My network connection just freezes. I can't call or text and I have no data. If I try to make a call, it freezes on dialing and the only way to get it back is reboot. This is happening about twice a day and is really a pain. The only way I know it has happened is by trying to make a call and it freezes. I don't know how long it has been that way and when people try to call me, it goes straight to vmail. I put a new SIM card in thinking that was the problem, but it didn't help. I have searched everywhere trying to find a fix. TMO CSR was absolutely no help at all. Shocking.
BTW I am in an area with no 3G coverage. I am on EDGE all the time.

Since you have had the problem now with two different phones it could be a result of some app(s) you have installed, or related to your coverage. Did thr problem start after having each phone for some time?
I am working on ruling out an app. Weird thing is, I have had winmo for over 3 years in the same area with no probs. This is my first android. I am uninstalling an app at a time to figure out if it is one.
****Update****
So I uninstalled the ESPN Scorecenter app. I haven't had a freeze in over 24 hrs. Guess I am going to have to find another app to follow the games while I am at church.
are you sure u r in area that has only Edge? have u try to Lagfix the fone?
goodluck.
This just happened to my wife's Vibrant. This reminds me of when I had the T-mobile Shadow, where suddenly, it would not be able to send or receive data or calls BUT the phone itself shows no indications of any signal problems. It's as if the cellular software component has frozen and so the signal bars are frozen to whatever state they were and thus tricking you into thinking everything is fine until you try to make a call or someone calls you on a landline wondering if your cell phone is dead.
I suspect it's due moving into a poor or zero signal area and the phone tries to make a data connection. I really have no idea how to fix this other than to hope there is a firmware update to resolve this. The only fix is to reboot the phone (flipping the phone to flight mode gets one to a state where you can't turn flight mode off... which indicates a lost of control to the cellular component).
I am consider finding a way to reboot the phone nightly, which will help if this happens overnight, but I wish there was a way to detect this more immediately so it can reboot when needed. Perhaps an app that monitors the carrier signal strength and if the signal level is perfectly the same for a long duration, then a lock up of the cellular component is suspected.
Okay, here is my problem: Every once in a while I will completely lose all signal on my phone. It wont pick up 2G, 4G, nothing. Wifi and bluetooth both seem to work though just fine. I've searched and haven't found anyone with the same issues so I'm wondering if it's just my phone or if nobody has commented on it. I first noticed this about two weeks ago, when my phone refused to find service. I was stuck with the little X next to the signal meter. I figured I was just in an area with poor service and didn't think much of it. An hour later, still, no service. This time I went outside where I know I have good 4G service and nothing for 5 minutes. I enabled airplane mode and disabled it, still nothing. Turned the phone off and back on as a last resort. Still nothing. I ended up finishing the day with wifi calling as that still worked. Sometime later my phone began receiving service again so I thought it was a fluke issue.
Then, just yesterday the same thing happened. This was when I rebooted my phone (which bypasses the fastboot feature) and service was restored right away. I called T-mobile and they said there weren't any network issues in my area and they had never heard of this issue before on the Amaze.
So, this is where I'm asking if anyone has heard of this before. I'm running a stock ROM and it hasn't been rooted. Thanks for any comments!
This might help just a touch. I do live in an area with decent service but my couch and bedroom are deadzones for some odd reason. I bought these signal boosters for 2 bucks figuring "what the hell, I'll give it a shot". No more dead zones, and data went from E to G. Not a miracle worker but for a couple bucks it keeps a signal at least.

Wireless Coverage
I have 2 brand new Amaze 4G for a few months now and had no problem with the coverage. I know the coverage is good with full signal bars and have not found any issue with coverage.
Sometimes, different phones have different received signal sensitivity. Also depends on user behavior. If you are always using a handsfree device (cable or BT) and your phone is in a bag, then your coverage is reduced by your action. The best coverage you can ever get is when you have line of sight (unobstructed) to the cell towers.
There are a few issues with your problem:
1-Poor inbuilding coverage
2-Poor coverage in your area
3-Network optimization issue
4-Hardware issue
If you are going from 1 bar to no bar, then most likely you have coverage issue. You lost signal since the level is already very low.
If you are going from full bar to no bar, you might have hardware or network optimization issue. Try your phone is the city or area with known good coverage first. If the behavior persists, then you have phone problem.
I used to manage wireless network for carriers.
same issue
I've had the exact same thing happen to me. Red x, no signal except wifi, in places where signal is not normally an issue. Battery pull doesn't work, return to signal seems arbitrary. Had the same thing happen with my Desire. I have no answers, but you are not alone.
Yup, it happened with my first Amaze. I got it back in January and started playing with it - rooting, custom ROMs, etc. Then later that day, the signal just died on me. I thought I must've screwed something up, so I flashed back to everything stock. No luck. I waited for half a day, then it randomly started working again at night.
You probably noticed tha tI said that happened with my first amaze. That's because after that signal issue, I discovered that my camera stopped working. I returned it to T-Mobile and they sent me another one. This one is working great though.
Well thank you for all the input so far. Id like to say that this isn't my first cell phone and I'm not new to weak or poor signal areas, especially from T-mobile. I was using my phone at work at the time, which has anywhere from no signal to 3 bars depending on where you are. This wasn't one of the cases that I was standing in a dead zone when I checked my phone. I had no signal for several hours, including over 30 minutes of standing outside trying everything I could think of. I have had excellent signal outside in the past, exactly where I was "Hiding". I got the Amaze because I was tired of playing with my old HD2 and having to work around bugs and possibly not receiving calls. So far, I'm not happy that the radio seems to quit responding all together and leaves me without a phone (minus the wifi calling but I'm not always around a hotspot).
I also experienced a dramatic signal loss at home, going from full signal strength to maybe one bar right around the time that I first had issues. I don't know if this is related or if this is a completely different thing.
I am 99% sure this is an error with the phone - probably software related with the radio driver(s) or radio firmware. I guess I will try taking it back to T-mobile and seeing if they could exchange it for a new one. I was just really wanting to avoid that as I finally got my phone setup how I like it. Again, Thank you for the input and let me know if you are having the same problem or if you know of a solution.
I am on my third Amaze and also tried a Galaxy SII X due to the same problem at my home. Even the Samsung did the same thing. In my house and especially in the driveway, the signal varies wildly between -85dbm to as low as -111dbm. The frustrating thing is once it loses the signal, it doesn't seem to reacquire it without a reboot.
I'm with Telus, and they said they will check on it, but I'm not holding my breath. In my immediate area, outside my house, the signal isn't great, but it will usually hang on. I have been to different cities, and all has been well with it. Coming from a rock steady 2G Touch Pro II, I am disappointed as well..
I am new here to this site, but I am having a similar problem with my Amaze. At work I always have a weak 4G signal, but the last few days it has been gone altogether. I have full phone service (4 bars) but no data. The 4G indicates I have signal, but I can't connect to anything on the web. I called HTC and they had me pull my battery and sim card so they could send a "reset signal" to my phone. After my phone came back up I had faster service than ever, but it only lasted a few minutes and went away again. I am thinking this is a phone issue. Oh, the Amaze is my first Android. My only previous smartphone was my Nokia E71x.
I know if I have WiFi calling selected, an x will show up on my signal if i turn WiFi on. I've personally only had slow data in the area I work. I blame it on the fact that it is a busy corporate park with lots of hotels, cuz my signal is fine elsewhere. Try calling tmobile and seeing if they have known tower issues in your area. I know I had that problem with sprint and they sent me a free airave. Maybe tmobile could do something similar if its.a known problem.

It's most likely a network issue. I get the same thing, it will timeout/refresh the network where it will not get a signal for about 30 seconds a few times per day. I blame the network, since the same thing happened to me with my mt4g

Thank you! This fixed it for me. It was happening only today while I had WiFi enabled, it would turn the mobile radio off completely and the box would be grayed out so I was unable to turn it back on. I had my sim updated today to enable wifi calling so after I read your post, I turned the wifi calling off and the mobile radio signal came back immediately. Strange bug.

I was told It's by design. It saved battery life by not constantly searching for a mobile network it won't use (due to wifi calling). It's not like you can hand off the call to the local network. I do notice that if i start walking outside, once my wifi hits a low signal it logs back on the network.

There is actually an option to specify how the WIFI calling works: either all the time or only when cellular signal is gone. Sounds like you have it set to be on all the time. This means that if you have a good WIFI connection, the cellular radio is shut off and all traffic goes through the WIFI calling app. The other option (which I use) only uses wifi calling when there is no cellular signal.
I have lost cellular signal 3 additional times since my last post. Its not just that I'm in a bad spot and I have no signal for 30 seconds. This goes on for 30 minutes or more - up to several hours. I have found that rebooting the phone fixes it as I believe it completely (as much as possible) removes power from the radio and requires it to be completely re-initiated during the reboot. Simply shutting it off doesn't work as the quickboot is enabled and most likely doesn't perform a complete re-initialization of the radio. My only guess at this point is that there is some kind of possible leftover code from development which never was removed from the radio (this happens more times than not). It could be a timeout or simply causing the radio to hang because of 1. excessive heat generation, 2. excessive power drain, 3. buffer overflow, 4. excessive RF transmit power... In any case, one of those issues could trigger an event in the radio to cause it to simply stop responding.
I am in the process of trying to get T-Mobile to get me a new phone as I am outside of the 30-day window. I have also confirmed it with them that this was not a tower issue.
Thanks

Hmmmm who is dear? Lol.... Ne ways, well first off, I commend you for digging this thread up rather than just starting a new thread without even looking first :thumbup::thumbup: I can't say I've ever seen someone who hasn't even been a member for 1 full day do that. Shoot, I see senior members start new threads or pointless threads without searching first, so good job haha.
Ok, back on topic now, if it's only dropping when you go in your room, then I don't think it's anything wrong with the phone. Not sure who your provider is, but u may be able to call them and have them look up your address and tell you what kind of signal u should get outside your house, and what to expect inside your house. I know t-mobile does at least

Well your situation is a little different than other peoples in this thread if u can't connect al all. Ok wait so first off, it won't connect to a network at all? AND you only paid 50 bucks for it...? Sounds a little fishy to me bud, why did he say he was selling it...?
Next thing, I don't know why a t-mo rep would tell you to root the phone, rooting has no effect on your signal strength or your ability to connect to a network.
And lastly, is the phone a T-Mobile branded amaze owhat carrierr...? and will it not connect at all, period, or can u make calls just not data...?

If the normal connection won't restore after the wiping cash & dalvik cash, you probably have to consider this awesome app:

i thought this would be the best place for a problem i started having about2 weeks ago. i am on vodafone uk.
i used to get 3-4 of the 4 bars reception while sitting at home(as an example). suddenly i was getting 1-2 and sometimes none (all blank).
i thought i would try and eliminate things one by one so here is what i did...
checked with my sim in another phone and another sim in mine. from memory the other phone having my sim was slightly down but not much and my phone with the other sim didnt really change much.
i checked with vodafone by calling them, they said they couldnt see any problems on the network, birmingham uk, but would send a new sim, after getting the sim activated when it arrived, no better. their onling forum is still waiting for a response back from their technical whether there is any problems. i dont see how the phone department can instantly tell me when the technical need many days to find an answer.
i thought it could be the rom so i first updated lite'ning rom to resurrection remix and then to a later version of RR and no change. the newest version of RR has a different kernel, flux i think, than the siyah in the 2 previous roms but again that different kernel didnt improve it. lastly i even changed the modem/radio trying to different ones to the default, xxlpx and kh3 and again no difference.
the only thing that improves it is turning 2G on instead of 3G. the bars go back up to 3-4. even with 3G on previously as i never changed it before it was always fine.
i know this is a long post but i wanted to be thorough as i really appreciate any help as i am now lost as what could improve this.
Mispost
anyone?
I have been having a similar problem on Three for about five weeks now. Despite numerous reloads of Android and modems etc I was getting no results, 5mb dl speeds have dropped to around 150kb despite having a good signal.
After many many calls to so called customer service I have discovered that a new cell tower near to me has been activated as part of the network expansion program and because this cell is closer to me than the one I used to connect to I now get a stronger signal from this so my phone always chooses this. Problem is this cell has only got a 2mb feed INTO it, its a TMobile/Orange cell now being shared with Three....so I am basically fooked.
Check with Vodafone if they have done anything similar recently near you. Three are adamant there are no problems my end, technically they are correct I suppose, its all working, I just cant access the net without it timing out constantly now.

I am having the same issue with my phone. I get only one bar (sometimes none!) whenever I'm home & I'm on WiFi; however, I get full signal strength when I'm out & on 3G.

i thought it could be the cell tower thing as there is only 1 vodafone one in quite a large radious, about 2 miles, and many of all the other networks. i dont know why vodafone are happy to have 1 compared to at least 3-4 each for all other providers.
this morning i drove that 1 mile to the vodafone mast and ran fresh network and surely that would have connected to that as i was 5 meters from it. still no better. ??
Just try NELP3 modem once... I had done similar issue once.. Now my network is better..
is nelp3 okay for uk though?
Try flashing another Modem. Im from Germany but i had similar problems. A new Rom would do too i think

Number of options, tower may be having problems, maybe some form of interference, try a different modem, try different sum card if you have one spare?

i do have the same problem as above, no signal in the building and 50% signal outside building. I swithch my SIM with fren's (he use another telco), and his SIM not work on my S2 and my SIM work on his phone (not SIM issues).
I tested many modem as recommented , LP2/LP3, LP9, LPX, KI3, KI4, KF2, no luck.
I flash different ROM, (some old version that work before), from CM9, AOKP, Sammy. no luck.
I restore old back up ROM. no luck
Fix permission, no luck.
any advice ?
OK next step is to flash a different modem
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
i've tried a few modems including the ones people believe better, all have this problem so far.
it may be the network mast in my case. i discussed with vodafone what 3G mast i was connected to and then which 3G mast is next closest. i then went right next to that other 3G mast and the signal was full bars, no fluctuation at all. this surely means it is either, 1-the network mast i keep locking to having problems or 2-all the modems i have used favouring battery over strength and not getting enough power to get a good signal.
is there a way of finding out which modems are better for battery and which are better for signal strength?
Umm not that I know of, best thing to do for that is either research the modems for better strength or battery etc, or just test some yourself, however that is time consuming,
Personally I think it is just the mast having problems, however I may be wrong
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
i thought i would add a little research to this thread, not too much but just my experience with 3 specific modems.
the background is that recently i have started getting very poor network signal as i believe the closest 3g mast to me is having problems. if i turn to 2g its better as the phone then connects to the closest 2g tower which gives better network signal.
i know that a modem should be left for 2-3 days before judging but i thought that if a modem is currently better than another then that is only likely to stay the same with time as long as they were given the same short period of time.
i used the app network signal info and did 3 5 minute tests for each modem and then averaged the percentage of the signal and also averaged the -dbm also.
i first used the modem i currently had on there, BUKI1
- average percentage was 19%
- average -dbm was -103
both very poor scores
the signal was very jumpy up and down also
i then flashed the custom modem, i think by krs007, M250S
- average percentage was 44.6%
- average -dbm was -90.66
obviously a huge increase
the signal was very steady, hardly changing from that average
lastly i flashed NELP3
- average percentage was 30.66%
- average -dbm was -97.33
better than at first but not as good as M250S
i am now going to let M250S bed in for a few days while keeping my eye on here for how NELP4 performs but so far i have a huge increase in signal in a previously very poor area. as this is also due i believe to the tower having problems, hopefully it will only get better.
Try downloading OpenSignalMaps from Google Play Store. For starters, you can determine the approximate location of the offending cell tower (if the cell tower was indeed the culprit). Sometimes, i realise that the phone tends to stick to certain cell towers when others are in closer range and could purportedly provide a better radio link. For this, the app provides a refresh feature that allows you to manually trigger a cell tower refresh. I am aware that most apps requiring connectivity have this feature but i don't suppose you can call the refresh on trigger.
Hi Marc
Tracked down a copy of M250S(dont know if its the same as you have installed though), and very briefly, as in 30 secondsish, I had 4 bars and dl`s around 5mb again!.But midway through it dropped out and that seems to be the pattern. Seems to be having problems locking onto a cell, signal bars frequently grey out, maybe its a compatibility issue with CM9, I dont know.
Anyway, let us know how you get on,
Cheers
Chris
it probably is the same as i dont think any others have that name.
it probably just needs to bed in for a few days. i have noticed mine go between 3g and H quite regular but it always does that, i havent had any dropped calls or similar so far.
My phone - I have ICS - S-OFF Amaze with Energy ROM and I had tried to apply blas0id tweaks.
The problem - In certain areas I don't have phone signal for a few minutes, then suddenly it will show 4 bars for a few minutes. In general the signal seems fickle.
Before ICS upgrade, when I had GB, I always had 4 bars in the same places. I *think* I had good signal with ICS before I did blat0id tweaks, but I am not certain of that. (ICS and the tweaks were within a few days)
My wife's Iphone still has excellent signal in those places. Tmobile Mytouch also has excellent signal in the same places. So something has changed on my amaze and not the cell towers.
What I have done so far -
1. went back to stock ICS by flashing the img file. That did not improve the signal. So then got back to energy
2. Tried another ROM - speedrom. No improvement in signal
3. Tried few apps like fresh network. They did not help
Please help me
What can/should I do? I love my amaze, but if I dont get consistent signal, I will have to replace it
Are there any tweaks that I can try?
How about the custom kernels that have been made for ICS recently, would those help?
Is there a way to increase the power to look for and catch on better signal? I can trade battery life for better signal
Thanks
I have same issue but with WiFi only. I never had GB I hope there is a work around

Found a workaround
This was dumb luck, but when I was trying to play around the app opensignal, it wanted me to set 2G for some of its functionality, since that functionality does not work over 3g. So I went to setup and set Network mode to "GSM Only" from "GSM/WCDMA Auto"
And walla! right after that my signal jumped from 1 bar to 4 bars and has stayed there. I went back to WCDMA and signal dropped, so now I change the network mode only when I need 4G. Its a pain, but at least, the signal is good when I need it.
So with that information, can someone help how I can tweak something to get my 4G and also good signal?
Thanks
try updating the radio if you have done so, even though you are going to have to go through the process of locking the device again and unlocking the bootloader again, that would be an idea to try, we still dont know what changes R2 radio update has done but its deff worth a shot

yup, that's what this setting is supposed to do, but it increased the quality of my phone signal, that is what I am trying to make better/consistent. Because even after all the bells and whistles, calling someone/receiving the calls is the primary purpose of the phone for me and if that doesn't work, the phone doesn't work for me

My amaze won't get 4g in my house whatsoever, only switches to 2g when it feels like it.

A new sim card is a good idea.. so is removing the back cover and cleaning off the contacts with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Taking something and SLIGHTLY bending out each of the gold contacts so they make better contact with the case, making sure there is no debris.
Another thing to look into- there is a TON of hacks for cellphone signal that can be done in build.prop.. playing with those settings is probably a good idea.
The last idea- the signal is actually NOT different. The number of bars it shows you is now just more ACCURATE. You still lose signal in ONLY the exact places you would have before.. but now when your phone would show you as having 1 or 2 bars(on gingerbread) right before you lose all signal, on ICS it shows you as having NO bars because you truly have almost lost the signal. It is VERY accurate, now that I am in an area with bad signal.. I have actually flashed gingerbread again and things did NOT get better, there was just fewer bars that weren't as accurate. But I lost signal in the same spots, and would lost 4g in the same exact spots..

Guys, OP here. This question/workaround is not about getting 4G. I am getting 4G just fine. Its about the phone signal (the bars). My amaze does not get good phone signal in some areas and when I set the network mode to GSM only (2G), phone signal strength and stability increases. and now I want to figure out how I can keep the setting to 4G and get a good phone signal

Hi SBD, thanks for coming in. I will look into build.prop (ro.ril properties I think) I will also clean any dust inside the phone, may be that will help. The sim card was new when I got my amaze .. but no harm in trying. So I will ask for a new sim card too.
However, in my case, I have a different experience. This is what I did in a weak signal spot.
Have 4G on. I get 0 signal. Can't make a call
go to 2G at the same spot, I get 2-3 bars. I can make a call
I used opensignal app to check signal strength in both cases. with 4G it showed 0. With 2G it showed 42%
Another test. On my route to drop kids off for their day camp, I was on a call (with 4G on) and dropped the call twice (bad reception areas) while going. I switched it to 2G and while coming back did not drop the call.
Before I found this workaround .. people called me and complained that it directly went to voicemail and I never got the call. (no signal). Since I found the workaround, I haven't heard that from anyone.
So I am convinced that there are some real issues in catching the signal with 4G on that get resolved in "2G only" mode. (may be it has to do with the kind of cell towers we have in our area and nothing to do with the phone)
will update if I find more

Yea, it should be lines that have ro.ril that youd eant to change.. and fortunately one of those that you can add(it isn't included by default) will do exactly what you need, default to 2g signal when 4g is too weak. I actually need the same thing, in Jacksonville we have great signal.. except in this new place I moved into. It drains my battery by trying to stay with 4g.. but I don't have time before work to find it.
Look for a tthread by "master&slave" titled something like "super build.prop tweaks" in the vibrant forums, I THINK they had that line.. otherwise google around for something like "build.prop signal tweak" as if it isisn't in that thread, there's a really good one on some other forum.
Also, I remember there being some app that requires root that allows you to toggle between GSM preferred and 2g only.. it changes it at system level, and I don't think it was on the play store, I think it was on Xda.
But yea, I understand your dilemma, and until we get an alternative radio to flash(which I don't forsee), that is the kind of workarounds you need. If you find a reasonable solution make sure to post as it will help me too!

I will try to figure out what these different ril properties control and which one to modify .. will report after my experimentation. I haven't found a good comprehensive explanation of all those properties yet.
Glad I'm not the only one...

I have had this problem ever since I got my phone in October (right after launch). Updating to ICS didn't help. i've been planning to root and try another ROM, but so far have been skittish as this is my only phone. hasoon, you say it's the SIM card? I am trying the switch to GSM only to see if it makes a difference. My problem is at home - I have terrible service and I live on a mountain with cell phone towers everywhere. My daughter's AT&T and my old AT&T Nokia E71x had excellent service there. I'll let you know if this helps. Maybe a trip to my local t-Mobile store is in order.
It's not the sim card. I noticed on google a lot of people have this problem with htc phones. It's just a bad radio.

We know. If you wanna help read my post number 16 or try some of the links he posted in 17.. we just need a decent workaround.
Hi
I wanted to buy this from gearbest.
Will it work on AT&T with all the LTE bands?

I'd like to say "yes", but have found out the hard way that it depends on exactly which part of AT&T's network you intend to use it on.
I created a thread which I haven't yet updated, which outlines some issues I had. Turns out that my X820 as well as a different LeEco X82X (can't remember - same model ) do NOT work with AT&T in my area at all, and I live very close to the antennae. However, when I travel out of town, the phones work great. AT&T can't seem to figure out why this part of their network is different, but something certainly is. YMMV.
At the moment, there doesn't seem to be a large enough sample size in the US to compare notes and find possible network issues with this phone.
I have it, and it works for me in North Florida in AT&T

I have more info on my issue with this phone on AT&T, and it's an odd one. LTE works great, but if I am directly under the antennae, or within line of site of them, 3G shows full bars, but it does not work and I cannot place or receive a call. If I walk a block away, and have a building between the phone and the antennae, 3G works perfectly. If I initiate a call where it works, I can move back to LOS, and call does not drop. No other phone seems to have this issue, so there is something very different in the 3G implementation in these phones which is responsible for this.
I wish someone out there had an idea as to what is causing this. One of AT&T's network engineers, who witnessed this first-hand, is stumped and I'm short on ideas to remedy it.

I got an x829 yesterday (live in the US) and plan on using it with Straight Talk/AT&T (getting the nano sim now). Have you flashed yours to a newer/custom ROM and it still works with AT&T? If so which ROM?

I have two of these phones, and both have the issue I described above. If I were to guess, it probably has something to do with initial 3G handshake timing.
One of the phones is running Madsurfer's 21s. It may have been a dirty flash over stock China ROM, but I seem to recall that one being a clean flash (wife's phone, so I don't mess with it much.) The other is Small EUI by aurel V7, dirty flashed over Rom V6-X820 of Bshuy2003.
I have observed no real differences with regard to the 3G connectivity issue between either phone, with any firmware. I'm thinking it is something at a lower level which is causing this odd issue.
I haven't received my max2 yet but I have read through allot of these posts and I remember reading about using the #*#* code to force LTE and it helped mobile connections. Also I saw that 19s CN or 17s India eui has VoLTE support. Lastly I noticed that the posted 23s beta cooked eui that Steve Mars posted has new modem files. You may try that as well. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info, but I think the issue runs pretty deep inside these phones. If I knew more about the hierarchy of the software/firmware, where network negotiations are concerned, I'd have a better idea where to look for a solution. But I can say that I have tried virtually every ROM and modem file available, and this odd behavior persists. It's possible that it's specific to my home site, but according to the engineer, AT&T's sites are pretty standardized. The fact that other phones don't exhibit it, tends to point to something deep inside the Max2 as being the culprit. It's an insidious problem, as one might not realize that there was an issue, unless one happens to be close to a tower, trying to unsuccessfully make or receive a call, with full bars showing.
IIRC, the iPhone also had some strange issues on the AT&T network in the early days, and it took some concerted effort between AT&T and Apple to get it sorted out. The chances of of something like that happening to solve issues with these phones is probably next to nil.
Randy do you have LTE on your account? Could it be the eNode trying to promote you onto a better link and the baseband failing that negotiation?

I do have LTE on my account. The phone is connected, by default, to LTE, and falls back to WCDMA when making a call as it should. I have monitored signal strengths throughout the process, and they are very high, due to to my proximity to the tower. Locking the phone to WCDMA makes no difference.
When the phone doesn't have line-of-sight to the tower, and/or that LOS is significantly obscured, the UMTS signal goes below -60dba and the phone works perfectly. Thinking the signal strength was the key, the output of the tower was artificially reduced to below that level, as a troubleshooting test. It still did not allow the phones to work on WCDMA to make calls, even though it still showed a 3G connection with full bars. I'm not a telcom engineer, but it really seems like a timing problem, where the reflected signals work, but signals received directly from the transmitter do not. Again, the problem exists only at the point where the 3G link is initiated, either by the handset or the tower. Once a call is established, that session works fine, no matter the proximity to the tower thereafter. But once moved into the areas of LOS to the tower with an active call session and I end the call, the phone can no longer make or receive calls in those areas.
Short answer: sorta

Alright so I have been using this phone for about 6 months and it kinda sorta does. I am using the x820 one btw. I get about 80% up time with this phone. I can't really make or receive calls without the phone dropping them within the 1st minute. Let me explain further. So firstly, when I am on LTE (if not on 4G (I'll explain later)), and try and make a call, I will usually get switched over to 4G and then as the call is attempting it will completely lose service and say I can't complete the call. Then after that attempt, I will usually get my service back. And it will keep doing that unless I get lucky then if I actually can make a call then I will be lucky if I get a full minute or 2 before the call drops because of loss of service. Now for the later explanation. So basically I have noticed just because I am supposed to get LTE doesn't mean you will get the service. Also you will drop service a bunch and it gets very aggravating! I have verified my results in FL, GA, and TN.
