Are you referring to the gtalk service? If you are, it have something to do with gmail. I have tried removing gtalk and the gtalk service provider and it caused my gmail to stop working. What i ended up doing is just remove talk.apk. The app doesn't actually run until you click on it.

so I guess I have to be rooted, yes?
yeh, i believe its the actual gtalk service. ive been getting people messaging me when I never open up the app.
thanks for the reply!
The Talk service is responsible for the majority of the background communications for all Google apps and even some of the Market functions.
If you just want people to stop messaging you, go into Talk and change your status to Invisible or Busy. You could also try insulting their mother on a regular basis.
you cant download apps from the market if that service isnt running, I advise not to f*&ck with it.

But as already mentioned in this ONE PAGE THREAD, if you stop it from launching, you might not have background syncing working properly or have the market work properly.

I know I know google it.. Well I have and no one has the same thing.. That I can find anyways (There is an ocean of posts) every time i get a text message i get two notifications from messages. I have searched and I don't have any secoundary text apps and its not my rom cause my friend has the rom to and doesn't have the same problem. Below is a screenshot hope this helps and thanks for your time
Also when i click on the NEW MESSAGE(S) nothing happens it just closes the notification bar
Looks like you are using handcent. Turn off incoming notifications in your stock messaging app.
Blundered from my Dunderbolt
As stated above "I don't have any secoundary text apps"
Please read my whole post
You definitely have some other app that is notifying you.

I am using Virus Senseless so I doubt its htc sense.. But like I mentioned my friend has the same setup as me but doesn't get two notifications.
I had this same problem when I was using Thunderbolt Kang and I did a full wipe so I am not sure.
The icon looks like the handcent notification. I know you said you don't have another sms app installed, but that's what mine looks like.

Try turning off the default SMS app and see if you only get a single notification.
Also, try clearing the defaults on the built-in SMS app, then try texting someone through Contacts app. It should give you a list of SMS apps to text with. You would be able to see the other SMS app there.
That looks like a general inbox notification for an app that groups things like gmail, email, sms & mms.

I did this just now and no luck the only thing I had pop up under contacts was google voice so I uninstalled it and had no luck with this either. Still got 2 notifications..
The only other thing I have that affects my systems is ringopro but I uninstalled that too and had the same problem.
not sure why you haven't thought of this, but why not just click the notifications from the bar and see exactly which two apps they direct you to. turn notifications off in the one you don't use. problem solved?

I can only open the text from the one with a smiley face in it
I found the problem at a long and tedious process of wiping and restore each app at a time
Come to find out Beautiful Widgets 2 was causing it... Well thank God I was able to find it and thank you guys for still pointing me in the direction of it being an app... Who could have guessed
I had a problem similar to that. This is what I did.... I went into setting for my sms app. Turned off all the notifications than restarted my phone and than after booted up go back into settings and turn them back on. If that doses work back up all your apps and such than restore your phone.

I'm using Go Contacts as my default call app. Although whenever I get a missed call the notification doesn't disapear from the bar.
I need to open the main Contacts Samsung app for it to disappear or clear the bar.
I don't seem to find any configurations to change this.

bump... still no workaround for this?
I use Go SMS not Go Contacts so can't say i have this problem.
Best thing is to send an email directly to the developer regarding this, actually if you do a search there is a massive thread relating to GO and their various apps on XDA although you'd probably be better off just emailing the dev.

I have the same problem on Desire, redux2
Any suggestion?
Same here on HTC Desire S. It is really annoying.
Maybe this is the problem:
Since Android 2.3, Google prohibited third party application (i.e. non-system app) to make use of MODIFY_PHONE_STATE permission. One of the consequences is that all 3rd party phone dialer application can no longer clear missed call icon at notification bar. (Even at Android 2.2 or older, we need undocumented API to do so)

It now comes installed with Facebook and i don't want another camera icon in my app drawer. I'm using touch wiz so using another launcher is out of the question. I've checked Tibu and it doesn't see it. I'm sure others would find this info useful as well.

Sorry don't have an answer, but you're not the only one. I've been trying to find a way to remove the redundant camera and messenger app icons as well.
I've figured the best solution is to reinstall an older version, but then we'll never get any of the newer patches/updates without a solid solution.
Dont use the stock app. Use the app called "fast facebook" it is locally made from here at XDA and makes facebook browsing way better.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.fastfacebook.com&hl=en
I just noticed the new icons and wrote a quick app to remove them. Unfortunately it doesn't work since 3rd-party apps can't get access to "android.permission.CHANGE_COMPONENT_ENABLED_STATE" (which makes sense) and can only disable icons for their own application. Going to see if root helps...
Root did the trick, Facebook Icon Remover. Hope it helps and let me know if you run into any issues.

oh my... thank you!
Could this be extended to other apps with extra icons?
How does the icon removing work? I uninstalled facebook with root explorer from /system/app since I barely use it, deleting every apk I could, now the facebook icon is gone from the launcher but the camera/messenger are still there, and there's no apk named after those. Where should I look in my system folder?

It certainly could. There is a little detective work involved with figuring out the package/component names (they are hard coded in this app) but I am already working on extending this to allow the disabling/hiding of any application icon.

The app is using the 'pm' (package manager) command to disable two components (activities) in the Facebook package. It probably won't work if you've already uninstalled it. The components should be part of the com.facebook.katana-2.apk package (that's how it was named on my devices, both in /data/app/). You could try reinstalling Facebook, using this tool and then uninstalling to see if that removes the icons.

ICS users can simply select the 'Hide applications' from the action bar in the application drawer and then tap the applications to hide. You can then select 'Show hidden applications' from the application bar to un-hide them. I don't have an ICS device on me and only have one day experience with it (just got my Galaxy Tab 2 yesterday) but hope this helps. If not let me know and I can provide more detailed steps tonight.

Nevermind I removed manually the fb.katana from /data/app and its folder in /data/data and everything disappeared. Yay!
The only thing left is in Settings>apps managemente>all, there's still the com.facebook.katana listed even tho I already uninstalled all updates, weighting 0.0B and with the SD card icon. I tried to look for it in the SD directory but I found nothing. It's not a big deal in the end but I'm a perfectionist.
This also happened for Gmail and Google Quicksearch Box, while for Wisepilot after a reboot the broken SD link was gone.

I may have been given incorrect information regarding the "Hide Applications" being a stock option in ICS. Can you try the attached apk and see if it works for you on ICS? If it doesn't work then any logcat output you can send would help me troubleshoot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jtb.alogcat if you don't have a way to view/save logcat logs already).
Thanks for the apk. It did work on my HTC One S.

Nice, I'd happily donate for that!
I've tried your original app on my Xperia X10 (2.3) and it's worked as described.
I tried your app on CM 9 on Optimus 2x and I get an error when trying to hide both.
"An error occurred while disabling Camera icon. Verify your device is rooted and try again."
My device is rooted, I even got the Superuser popup asking for permission.

Unfortunately even ROM reinstall couldn't fix it, so I guess Google stores it online, but I didn't see an unhide option.
Does anyone found a solution?
Anybody got an update on this? I tested the hide option on my WIFE and can't get her back! yeah, I can type her name in and create a new hangout, but that's a lot more effort while driving than simply hitting a big icon of her face!
Thanks.

Unfortunately I didn't found an option to this. I think it's pathetic.
Me neither. I really dislike hangout. Beside that stupid bug, since I installed hangout even when I don't have any nerwork, I'm considered online 24/7 to people even when I just wish to be left alone and not be reachable offline. I checked there is a hangout/gtalk session that stay active 24/7 I tried the tricks to kill it with pilgrim but it comes back.
This is really uncomfortable. I sometimes just wish to be offline or invisible, I'm actually thinking of disabling definitely gtalk/hangout...

There is no readd because he is in my contact list (phonebook, gtalk) just hidden from the recent hangout list. I can send a message too and vica-versa.
It's not a big issue for me, I just think it's pathetic that there is a hide option, but no unhide or manage hidden contacts or something.

I just tried that but the ghost idle away session is still active even after disconecting from app. And l checked in gmail the other active session button and made sure to disconect them all. But I'm still 24/7 idle away. I hate that, specially right now where I really don't want people to see me or try to contact me. I have to block them so that they don't see me online it's pathetic ! Like hunfatal said. F... hangout.
I have the same issue and it does not appear that google implemented a way to unhide them.
