[Q] verizon ota - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got an ota yesterday on my verizon lte galaxy 10.1 tab. Anyone get the same and know what was in it? It was not ICS despite my hopes, dreams, and prayers.

IPv6 and some MLB.com stuff nothing special..
droid life has an article. /2012/06/29/verizons-galaxy-tab-10-1-lte-has-an-update-on-the-way-build-fe01-addresses-minor-bug-fixes/

Questions go in the Q&A section

Just tried to apply the OTA over existing rooted stock (with pershoot's kernel) and as expected the update failed. I have a fresh NAND backup saved for good measure but I'm not in the mood to do all of the work right now to go back to bone stock just for this incremental update. I guess i will have to put up with the update nag screen every time i wake the tab up until it drives me crazy enough to do the update lol.

This worked for my Charge, so it might work for the tab...change the EL01 (or whatever build it was) entries in build.prop to FE01. There were 2 lines where this was done, but I don't have them on hand ATM. Hope that points you in the right direction.

This is what was found over at droidrzr, there was another leak 6.14.79.XT912 but the one I'm talking about was last modified yesterday and it comes with the Color for Facebook app preinstalled & last but not least its ANDROID 4.0.4. Discuss away.
EDIT: This was confirmed to not be able to downgrade you, not even to gingerbread. But people were saying temple run works perfectly. Link is at the bottom but BE WARNED, NOT FASTBOOTABLE OR DOWNGRADEABLE. FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK.
EDIT 2: So this is a New Leak 6.16.204 found by fellow member mattlgroff. Still 4.0.4 and still not FASTBOOTABLE OR DOWNGRADEABLE.

This is kind of on the edge but I'm thinking this might be the OTA just because it says release keys and is packed with Color for Facebook.

I'm pretty sure at this point all ics leaks after 75 take you off the upgrade path. Being on 84 and not being able to go back to gingerbread is fine. But being in 84 and not being able to install this is not. If fastboot files are released then once the ota hits it looks like I will have to downgrade to 181 and accept newer version. I am really hoping one of our very talented devs can come up w a way to make it attempt to just update from 84 to this leak or an ota without the need to do all the other. Its clearly not easy due to how the process is setup to install from moto.
That's why I never jumped to ics when they leaked in the first place. Sorry to hear of your hassle

I choose it. Its my fault. Not sad as 84 runs awesome. But I assumed I could update to newer. Not concerned about going backwards. Hopefully someone can come up w something. I have it downloaded and ready to roll in case
Link is broken now apparently...
The 4.0.4 leak has been confirmed to be unfastbootable back to GB. It will strand you like the .84/.85 leaks, taking you off the update path with no way to return. The 4.0.3 leak (.79), on the other hand, is fastbootable back to GB so it's safe to play with like the .75 leak.
All of this has been confirmed by the devs @ Droidrzr.com.

Just rooted yesterday. Just worried cuz there is no unroot method to date. If there is an update, we may not be able to take it. Is it true that it might brick our rooted phone if we take an update?

I had problems restoring saved WiFi access point data on my Nexus S when going from Gingerbread to ICS. If you're up to the challenge, you can easily open the backup in a text editor. If you hadn't set the backups to be encrypted that is.
Then on the GS3, with WiFi off, copy and paste the values into the following file:
/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
You can use Root Explorer or something similar. If you run into any issues, just go ahead and delete the file. It'll get recreated automatically on reboot. Good luck!

Root S3
Where are the instructions to root the s3, all i found were the ones for the non usa s3
*edit
Herp derp, found it
Hooked on phonics and a little bit of tinkering worked for me

Now that I'm rooted...

I know I'm a pain, but I have a few more questions. I'm unable to find the answers that are specific to this device.
I've decided that (at least for now) I'll be keeping the stock ROM that is currently on this phone. I have yet to look at all of the other great ROMs and decide which ones I'd like, and I will eventually do that, but not today.
One of these days, Verizon will be pushing an OTA update. I don't want to lose my root, but if I'm keeping JB, I want the update. Will Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper work on this phone?
Will I get the OTA with a fully debloated device?
What apps do you recommend for a rooted device other than Titanium backup?
As always, any and all help is much appreciated.
If you're debloating the stock rom (using TiBu to remove apps), your phone most likely wont update properly. OTA Root Keeper should work. This phone hasn't had a update so no one can confirm any of this.
Your best bet is to flash a stock based rom (Clean Rom or something similar) and whenever we get an update, the rom developers will update the rom.

I backed up using twrp to my sd card. I apparently didn't have enough space on the phone, so I did sd. Is that enough or do I need to backup onto my phone as well?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
When an OTA finally rolls out, you will receive a notification. It's not going to force you to update. Then to get rid of the notification, you just need to change a few lines in the build.prop to the newest build number.

My wife's Note 2 was stock w/ root and recovery. Sometimes in the mornings her phone would be in TWRP from where it had downloaded the OTA and attempted to install it. I imagine the S4 will be the same way.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
Just read in the root thread that the OTA updates your bootloader and prevents you from flashing the old kernel to root again. BEWARE - Do not update if you plan to keep root.

You'll only ever get in trouble/lose warranty if you return a rooted/modded phone. Research Odin and download a stock Odin image. If you ever need to return your phone, just flash that first and you're good to go.
Also look into an app called Triangle Away. I haven't checked this phone ik download mode yet to see if I've tripped the flash counter but Triangle Away is an invaluable app for resetting it (requires root on a stock rom).

Make the Jump!
To be completely straightforward -- you probably really don't want the new update. From what I've been hearing around the boards, it doesn't really provide any new important (at least not in my eyes) functionality to the device. If anything, it's mostly just a patch for holes that they unintentionally left. Those holes are what allow you to root the device so easily.
You're doing the same thing I did, by the way -- I hung on to the stock ROM for quite some time, and was a little worried to separate. However, I highly recommend just making the jump and going with HyperDrive. It's on release 5.7 at this point, and I've been using it as a daily driver for a few days now. I'ts really solid, you get all of your stock capabilities and functions plus MORE customization. Pretty cool, and much better than whatever Verizon will eventually push out in my opinion.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
I did decide to unroot for now, and go with the update. Sooner or later, after a good root method comes out, I will likely root again. Mostly, I just wanted to see what this update was all about. It's both good and underwhelming. It's good because the phone doesn't lag like it used to, but otherwise underwhelming.
Thank you, everyone, for your help. I'll definitely stick around on the forums. I really like the community here.
A rom would have fixed that lag.

Not Sure, but i can check it out, thanks for the heads up!
I have a question on something I don't fully understand.
I had RL7 for one night and LOVED it - until it rebooted and soft-bricked.
I found my way back out of that and flashed RLS8 and have it completely set up exactly perfect, however, random apps make my phone quit responding and some will error and say the app has crashed and needs to close.
So I started looking and the very first thing I saw was RLS8.1 is now out, checked the changelog and it looks like it fixes a bunch of issues, some of which I had been experiencing.
One thing that I just noticed though, is that it's built on ME7. I just checked and double-checked my About, and RLS8 is clearly on MDK.
So my question is really straightforward: If I flash to RLS8.1 which is built on ME7, is there a way back to any MDK ROM afterwards?
I'm not about to take a ROM in the ME7 line if it means that I will lose the recovery I currently use (TWRP 2.5) - and especially if there's no way back from ME7 to MDK.
Please clarify for me!
Thank you sbreen, for all the work you've done on this ROM - this is the first ROM I've put on my S4 since I got it - I did nothing more than root the day I purchased it a couple months ago waiting for something like Hyperdrive offers, and I have to say that so far, I've been impressed with it's speed and customization!
Thanks again!

If you want to you can flash to an MDK based Rom after flashing Hyperdrive. The thing to be concerned about when talking about ME7 is not the Rom per say but the bootloader lock out that the OTA has. Flashing a Rom (especially pre-rooted ad 99. 9% are if not 100) does not touch your bootloader so there is no worry about losing custom recovery or root flashing an ME7 based Rom like RLS8

Need help from someone experienced

I have a galaxy s4 for verizon. I rooted it around May 25 using something called motochopper which I think used a mostly stock rom. Around mid July I started getting a message pop up to update my system software. So far I have not done this because I read it would remove root. I would like to keep my phone rooted and either remove the message to update or else find out how I can update and then re-root. The issue is one time I press the install update by accident and thankfully it gave an error which prevented my phone from updating so i am not even sure how to do this. I am not very experienced with this sort of thing and I really have no idea about all of the different types of roms out there. Can somebody point me in the right direction to a guide?
I have the ATT I337 S4 but check out the Verizon forum every so often. If you have "root" and a "recovery" with "Loki doki" than I would flash a Rom u might take interest in.most roms have the update option blocked. Have a backup made in case u don't like what u flash.read and follow all install procedures for each Rom/kernel.

I originally used the app Titanium backup to freeze the update app (since I use Titanium backup anyway). Go to backup/restore and scroll down to SDM 1.0 and freeze it.
But I also believe you can disable the app by long pressing the update notification, clicking app info and disabling it there.
duckworth has the right idea. Freeze SDM 1.0 with TiBu and also freeze FWupdate. There is also a way to delete the downloaded update from your phone. Can't remember where its located though.

2+ years from now, you will probably have a different phone... the Galaxy S8 or Note 7 haha. It shouldn't be a problem and you could always flash a Custom ROM depending on your current build. Are you on MDK or ME7?
