I am on AOKP and wondering if it matters that I am still on the KH7 modem from stock? I can still makes calls and data is fine so is there any downside to not switching to a CM modem?

I cant really remember why we have seperate modems. but if its working...
But there are newer modems that you can test, might be better than what you have, but it might not, all depends on location really.
There is no difference in tw /cm modems aside from the scripting used to flash. The modem.bin contained within are the same.

as long as the modem you are using works for you, its fine.
Different modems will give you different service levels, data speeds, call quality, etc...
I don't really know why modems are different in quality but I do know there are lots to try. There's even a gmap in which users test different modems on certain roms and state what has worked best for them in their home area. You might try this to see what suits you best.

My SGSII i9100 came with the KI3 modem, which worked flaswlessly (6-8 mbps down). An upgrade to KL1 saw identical performance. However, the newer xxLxx modems that are included with most of the ICS roms are really slow. Not only are speeds dismal (50-150 kbps on a good day), the phone is basically unusable. Play Store takes 60 seconds or so to come up, if it comes up at all, browsing is beyond painful, news apps take forever to load, etc, etc. If I go wireless or flash back to KL1, speeds are back to fast and the phone is snappy. I have tried probably 20 different APN configs to no avail.
Any idea why the newer modems don't work on my phone??? Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated!
if you are really concerned about your data downloading speed, flash KE7, the best I ever used...
I am using KL1 and all is well now. Must be a Houston area issue with the LPx modems. Thanks for the reply.
Modems are very much 'black boxes' (to use Entropy's words), only Samsung knows exactly why different modems work well or not well on different networks in different locations.
It's impossible to say X modem will work well for all people on a given rom in every possible location. They don't work that way. Like you, I also got pretty crappy reception/data speeds with the newer L modems, so I've stuck with KJ1 which I've been using for 5 mths. Being on an ICS rom has nothing to do with anything.
The usual procedure to follow if you do ever have signal/connectivity/data issues is to simply keep trying different modems (being CWM flashable this is simple/easy to do) until you find one that works well with your carrier/location/etc.
I've switched roms and now I want to find the best radio module to use. All I can do now is burn them one by one and work by hunch about which is best. Is there a more "scientific" method (tool)? Something that will test against a known source or something and give me a number I can compare?
You have to let the radio settle for at least 3 days to get an optimum result.. the only thing i can suggest is for you to try and compare the radios you've personally tried.
I don't think there's a "scientific way"

You don't have to 'let the radio settle for 3 days', however, when you test a modem, you should probably test it in different locations/at different times of the day to get a proper guide on how it's going to perform with your carrier.
Carriers sometimes have different equipment at different locations in the same city/whatever, so you might find you get crappy reception/performance in one location whereas it works really well in another area.
Having said that, if a modem is going to end up really crappy, you can often tell the moment you start using the phone after flashing the modem/rebooting; reception will probably be really bad right and/or data speeds terrible/no data from the get go compared to the modem you were using/testing previously.
There's no science involved. Either test a bunch of modems out & see what works well with your carrier/in your location, or ask someone else using the same carrier/in your area what modem they're using.

"burn" them??
I'll take it you mean "flash" them. There is a difference.

On my i9100 I have a really strange signal problem my suspicion is a hardware issue.
Let's start with the actual problem, from the title you can tell its signal related, it constantly is really low but in some places full. In places where other people on android get full signal I get no signal what so ever. I have tried a custom ROM (super nexus JB 4.1.2), I've also tried a few modems giving each a few days to test but they all act the same so I don't really know what to do in software terms. Any ideas anyone?

If you already tried different modems (and RILs?!) it could be a carrier or hardware issue.
If you want to read a little bit more about modems and RILs, have a look here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1881304

Yeah I used getRIL for the RILs and as I say there's no difference, also I've tried sims from different networks in my phone and doesn't make a difference but they work perfectly in other phones so it mist be a hardware issue

I have a Samsung Galaxy SII, the i777. I have rooted it and loaded ShoStock3. I love the ROM except I'm having trouble downloading apps from Google Play. The research I have done suggests that I need a better modem. I have downloaded and flashed six different modems. Each one just as slow as the last. I'm in Salt Lake City, Utah. I know that the location can have something to do with the modem as well. Does anyone have a suggestion on which modem would work the best? Also, if you happen to know that there is a separate problem and that it's not the modem, will you please let me know? Everything else seems to load fine, it's just trying to load apps from the market that I'm really noticing it is really slow. Thank you everyone in advance.

Modems are good in different places. What's good for me might be awful for you. Have you done a speed test?

You've already flashed 6 different modems, you should know by now which one is the best for you out of those 6.
If you don't like them all, try some more and pick out the best.
Have you tried KH7 or LL6?
Side note: why can't you use Wifi for Google Play?
You are I assume flashing modems for this device right? I only ask because obviously the i9100 modems wouldn't work for us. (And I'm pretty sure calls don't work with them) also, if you are flashing all these modems and they ARE for our device, and NONE are working properly, I would look at a fresh flash of the rom of your choice wiping everything again or going back to stock to eliminate hardware error possibility.
I did verify that they were all for my model and network. None of the six were any better than any other. I also noticed none of them worked on the 4G network. I tried to download an app to do a speed test but after 30ish minutes waiting for it to download on each modem so I could test it, I gave up.
Shoman94 changed to UCLL6 modem on his latest build. Are you using this one now?
Or you can select all the modems from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336958
They seem to be working OK, at least for me. I have tried at least half of them although I am still running ICS (CM9.1), not JB like you.

In the Settings of ur phone, since u r runnin SHOstock 3, do u have the Mobile data box checked under Data usage ? And do u have the "Set mobile data limit" box checked under Data usage (this could hinder u) ?? And under More settings/Mobile networks is the Network mode set to something Other than the "GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode)" (this could also be the problem)??

So, I un-rooted my phone but from what I understand, even doing that won't re-set my modem. It's still working slowly. My biggest fault here was not doing speed tests from the beginning and not noting down what my phone came with. If I could find what modem my phone came with, I would root and load it back on.
I really appreciate everyone's help and suggestions.
Is there anyone in Utah on the 4G version of the SII that could tell me what their modem is?

Check your APN settings, that can cause plenty of issus for data.

Hello people,
For the past few months I'm having this issue which I find extremely [email protected]!!
Every few minutes, my phones just loses internet connectivity - the 3g signal appears to be normal during all the time, thing is, whenever I try to use any internet application - it just hangs. and then, after a minute or so, connectivity is back(again, for a few minutes).
I have tried flashing so many versions of modems - some improved it a little but most of them didn't help at all, or even made it worse.
Hopefully someone could help me with that as I'm that close to give up on this and buy a new phone.
Thanks in advanced.
Nir.
Which firmware are you running on your phone? What modem do you have right now and where do you live? Do you have problems with all apps that use internet-connection? Do the problems dissapear when you use wifi?
Just some information would be usefull

Yop.. forgot to mention a 'few' things...
Model: GT-I9100
Rom: RootBox V3.8
Kernel: 3.0.31-CM-g7ce58e6
Baseband: I9100DXLPB
Android version: 4.2.2
I live in Israel, bought the phone in Thailand.
I tried flashing all available Israeli modems(from various cell phone providers) - none helped.
Problem disappear when I move to WiFi - as 3g connectivity moves to background...
Thanks.
I assume you've read the Rootbox threads to see if other people experience signalproblems?
Did you compare the connectivity with other roms? Stock-based roms for example...

I've been hovering the internet for weeks in search for a solution..
That's not a RootBox issue in particular as I tried using various roms...

That seems quite weird.. The only thing I can come up with is 1) a hardware problem, or 2) you live in an area where the signal is crap
Hopefully someone else knows anything.. Good luck.

Neither of them thanks anyways.
Anyone else...?
If you've only tried flashing the modems bundled with stock roms from Israeli carriers, you haven't done nearly enough. There are literally dozens of modems available, you need to start flashing as many as you need to. This isn't going to fix itself magically.

I haven't flashed only Israeli modems but others as well. I've tried around 20 so far...
Question is, which direction should I choose? should I look for Thai modems or IL?
That depends. I know Israeli carriers sold (still sell ?) the I9100T, are you sure you don't have one of these ? If that's the case, I'd be trying modems bundled with roms released by the Australian & NZ carriers which sold the I9100T (I have one), and yes, the Thai ones as well.
If you do have an I9100, then keep trying any/every modem you can get your hands on. If it's not a carrier-side issue, this is really all you can try, unless you want to start messing around with RIL's as well. I've not found any difference in connectivity doing this personally (tho many people have) but if you get to the point of trying every single modem & you're sure it isn't a carrier issue, you might as well try. But I would leave this till last given many people find their connectivity messed up even worse by flashing an incompatible RIL.
