Hello,
As my sister is visually impaired, i was searching for magnification tools on an android device.
Her problem is that when she writes a text, she can't see what she's typing because it's too small.
Actually, a fully magnified android interface would be great, but I don't know if it exists...
She has no device yet, because we don't want to spend money for a one she can't use.
So if you know a device that integrates such features, or some usefull apps for visually impaired people... (She don't want screen readers, also).
And well, if an iPhone or a Windows Phone is better, you can say it
Thanks,
Fabien
ps : sorry for my english, i'm french
You could just get a large android device (e.g. Samsung Galaxy Note).
Well, i have a HTC Sensation, and it's not better, because the font size is adapted to the large resolution...
As someone who is in the same shoes, I highly recommend Handcent SMS. Completely adjustable font sizes on every single thing. I love it. No more eye strain or anything.
Handcent SMS is definitely a good option as you can easily customize the text size.
If you root the phone (not for everyone) you can adjust the DPI that will affect every app on the phone. You can see the effects in some of the images here: bit.ly/vfhzHn
So, i've searched a little on the market, and here is what i've found :
- Launcher 7 (for big icons on the launcher, and for its simplicity)
- Handcent SMS (all font magnified)
- DW Contacts (in order to magnify the list of contacts and the dialer)
All this apps helped a lot for my sister, but if you see how I can improve...
Thanks !

^Else if you have a device which has CyanogenMod7 in it, then you may simply use Spare Parts to increase the overall font size.
I guess it is also available in the market for other ROM's as well, not sure about that!

It is available: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.droidgram.spareparts&feature=search_result. Another usable app is LCD Density Changer: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.beansoft.lcd_density_changer&hl=en.
this is my solution
I made a app these days and now i published it on market
it is called ScreenZooM. Search for it (icon is a magnifier with a big green +)
i will atach a qrcode image
i can't post links
Is it possible to make the sms txt smaller then the smallest size in the default sms app. Something like the smallest font on whatsapp
Thanks people
Using the stock ROM I don't think you can. It would be great to know if developers can tweak this in the custom ROMs, I also think the smallest font is still too big .
You have system fonts on small as well??
Settings>Display>Font Size
You can.
Just use the volume rocker when you're reading a text.
You just have to enable it first in settings, by hitting the menu button when you first open up messaging.
I've installed over 50 editors and reviewed 100s in the Play Store... none of them do everything I was looking for. Maybe I missed it.
Editor requirements:
Toolbars at the bottom.
Dark theme (option)
Dark paper / background
Autosave
Insert image (prefer in-line but thumbnail might be OK)

Opens to last edited and in edit mode.
Trial/free version available for testing before purchase.
No pushy popups asking me to download other things.
Clipboard - easy to use.
Bonus:
Cross platform version in Windows (web version.ok)
Wont freak out if I use AI Keyboard to paste text.
Links - between docs / pages / to web.
Save as text only.

Toolbars: App buttons should be configurable, always. Buttons for menu/bold/saveas/new could be at the top, bottom, left, right, or floating, per the user preference. I'm really disappointed android has not done more to assist users with reaching across their over sized screens. Almost no apps have this, and only a few place the controls in the obvious place = next to the keyboard = where the user is most likely to want to tap. S5 ships with quick screen sizing ability built in, seems Samsung is ahead on this one. And I don't think it's asking a lot, it's just a matter of moving the bar to a different place, it's too easy!
Theme: A dark theme uses less battery and is easier on my eyes, especially when it's dark out. The theme is the part around the edit area, strictly speaking. This would include all menu's and toolbars. There are great editors out there with dark themes and dark paper but the menu's open super bright, and whats worse is they'll put light gray text on them in wee little fonts with lots of space to make it bigger... and then ask for $$? No.
Paper: A dark paper is super easy to read in any lighting conditions, and uses less battery to display (the display takes 50%+ of most phones battery power) When printing, white paper is best because it is cheap and readily available, and printers are not generally equipped to print light colors on dark paper. Since most people are addicted to printing things they look at 0-1 times, we may be stuck with this for a while. In any case, I want dark paper. This has been a feature in editors for a long long time but is mostly missing from Android.
Autosave: This is a must. If it uses the "save every 10 seconds", it should also save on exit without prompting if I close in only 5s.
Insert image: My preference would be to have text above and below, not around, and not as a layer that is under typed text. If it's attached as a thumbnail, it should be easy to see and tap to zoom.
File Types: My favorite is RTF. It's been around a long time, compatible with most things. Any fairly common windows format is fine like doc or even pdf. I want to avoid special formats that wont work anywhere else. I don't mind if the program has this ability but if it cannot open/save in other formats by default, I'm not interested.
Opening: It should open to the last document opened, and ready to continue typing. If it opens to the home page, then I want to see a recent list with the last edited on top, and one tap to edit. I found some really nice apps that took 5-6 taps to edit a doc. For example, Evernote opens to the home page, you tap to view, scroll to where you want to type, tap and ... nothing.... you have to tap MENU and then some symbol for edit, and then you start typing and it's not typing in the right place, it moved to the top or the bottom or whatever... terrible app IMO.
Fees: I have dropbox and other storage already, I'd rather not sign up for yet another one. Many apps work with existing sharing services just fine, while others require payments for this, generally 4-8 per month. I'm only willing to pay if it is the only one that meets all my other requirements, and it has to be the super ultimate editor and really amazing too.
TagSpaces might do it. There's no trial for Android tho....
Downloads include linux, mac, windows, android and firefox/chrome extensions.
Looks really cool but there's no trial/free version.
TagSpaces does not support themes nor paper color choices.
I'm using SlimRom, it has a great holo theme, and inverted google app package.
Build 7-187 did not invert google play for me.
Build 6-112 works great
The Slim Gaap downloads are here Slim 4-4 Gaaps, stable addon page.
Still looking for a full editor with all the features I mentioned. It's very strange how many apps do not have proper color options for the canvas, any dev who ever opens an app at night or in a dark room knows why. Special lighting apps like Velis Auto Brightness with super dark mode enabled helps a lot, but in a dark room, if the large white areas are bright enough to see the lettering on them, then it's bright enough to light the whole room.
Anyone who wants a longer battery life should be asking every dev to add night modes to their apps
Using the Samsung Messages app on my Verizon S9+, I am unable to permanently change the font size in the actual conversation screen. Yes, you can pinch to shrink and expand font size but that gets reset to standard size every time (unlike on the S7 Edge where it remembered your size preference).
Through Settings, you can globally adjust font size but the only Messages screen this affects is the main Conversation screen which shows all conversations. Once you click on a conversation, normal font size is presented. Frustrating for my old eyes...
UPDATE: Ironically, when you adjust Font Size in Settings, if you swipe the sample screen above the sliders, it shows you a sample Messages screen and the font size does change in the sample, but it does NOT change in the actual Messages app. Sounds like a bug to me as they are depicting what I want to do, just doesn't work.
I'd like to use the stock app as it has some features that are unique. There must be a way to change the font size so the setting is persistent, no?
Seeing the same also. Hard for my aging eyes to see.
And also finding it doesn't follow the global setting for size. Same as you.
Same issue. I don't think you can change the font size just for the Message app.
I when back to my beloved and trusted Textra SMS app.
It changes when you change the font size in display settings font.

As I mentioned in my post, this is not true. On my phone, changing the font size in display setting ONLY affects font size in the main Conversations view. Once you click on an actual conversation, the font size returns to the default tiny size.
You can get a newer version on apkmirror.com but it wont allow updating samsung apps for some reson. Anyone have the latest version of messages signed by samsung that will install?
They need ro bring back the S8 messaging app which has this inbuilt feature to adjust text. Wonder, why they ripped off that useful feature.

I updated my original post with this tidbit:

Hopefully Samsung will acknowledge this bug and release a new version of the app. Clearly the global Font Size Setting is supposed to do exactly this.
Same thing. Very frustrating

It's really not that hard to pinch zoom. Takes a half second. Sure, it'd be nice if it would stick but, c'mon man.
I had a problem with the Background colors in the Messaging ap - some of the themes I like to use are really awesome but when I get to the messaging ap, they used yellow fonts on a white background - nearly impossible to read. I either have to use a different messaging ap entirely (Mood is a pretty good one I found that has TONS of customization options) or just guess at what was written - or change themes.
It's dissapointing that I can't change the balloons or fonts in the messaging ap any more - would be nice if we could - and change font size too - so for now, I am using the MOOD messaging ap and while I prefer the Samsung Stock one better - Mood isn't bad at all.
Its not only internal Messages app, Viber and Hangouts has really small font in input line. Tried increasing font size, tried toying with DPI settings. No idea why its like that and only affecting text input lines, but hope some later update could fix that?
Hi Everyone..I just got the 9 plus and the messaging app is different than it used to be. It is just blue bubbles with white background. It wont let me change anything like before and the setting the background wallpaper for messages is no longer there....is that how everyone else's is?
I also switched to Textra for the all of the customization that it offers. It's a free download so I gave it a try and I've stuck with it since. Just my 2ยข

No, not "come on man". It should work as designed, and has worked since GSI-II.
I use Chomp. Let's you change all of the fonts and sizes, including the message notification pop-up.

I think you mean, "It should work the way I want it to work." It IS working as designed. It's just that you don't like the new design.
That's not to say that I don't agree that it would be better if we could choose a persistent font size. I do.
But we're talking about a split-second pinch out to increase the size.
A split-second.
So, yeah... C'mon.

Thousands of people having to take a split-second to adjust for a design bug every single time? No. You're missing the point.

Are you the same guy who made the old grindrmod?
How this work?
It's good like "old" version?
So far works great, thanks! Is there anything new we should be aware of coming from the other version?
A couple of things :
- I do notice that not all profiles with chats have the orange border.
- would it be possible to add swipe across screens (I think previous version of app or mod had this)?
Thanks and great job!
Everytime it's opened, it can't get a location as 'I have no Internet connection' apparently, when obviously I have.

The mod introduced that far before the app did. One might argue that they took it and monetized it from @GrindrGuy. Does this mean that if the app starts mimicking other features introduced by the mod to monetize from them that the mod will just start taking them away? Nah, I'm against this move... You and GrindrGuy ultimately decide, but I wanted to share my two cents.

If you want to get "super technical" about it, this feature was introduced years ago in the original app but taken away around v3.0.
EDIT: Since I do not have Grindr Xtra, if someone would like to actually send me screenshots of what this feature looks like, I may be able to re-work it so that the module provides a similar feature that is not a direct replica of the paid feature.
I found a bug.

Oh, wow - didn't know that! Here I thought @GrindrGuy was the genius behind it!
Don't have Xtra, but something to bring back that function making it different enough might be to have a little circle with counter in it: currently app gives you a yellow circle with the number of new messages. You could play with that idea: just a yellow dot if there are viewed messages, or include the number (?).
Along the same lines, I have a suggestion: In my area you often get a few users who don't upload a photo and you just see the generic black profile pic with no user name. Would there be any harm / Would it be possible to give those profiles a random name (user1123) so as to know which user is which?
I'm still used to swiping left/right to switch between profiles and inbox. It's annoying you actually have to tap on those now. Dunno if you can revert that behavior.
Say you're chatting with someone and you want to go back to "nearby" view. you have to go back and then tap on "nearby". It might be interesting to have that navigation bar with nearby/inbox/favs persistant throughout the app, with it autohiding and showing back up when you scroll down. This way there's an easy way to always go back to home, and we also always see if there's a new message notification.
Another suggestion I had way back when was to further customize this navbar: for example, I'd love to order it to have first favs, then nearby, then inbox, and being able to swipe between the views. At this point it might also be nice to have the option of having the navbar either on the (new) bottom or (old) top.
Sorry for the long post! Thanks for your efforts, and it's also fun to think about UI design like this!

That's actually how the GrindrMod feature used to work, by "hijacking" the unread messages count to always display the yellow border regardless of whether the messages were unread or not.

I'd rather not alter the UI to that extent since there may be some underlying reason for them changing it in the first place (one person suggested that the toolbar was moved to the bottom in order to encourage accidental clicks on the banner ads).

Looks like the app attachment was removed from this thread? I'm running 3.24.x or something just so Grindrmod will work. I'm being told when I open Grindr that I can only use that version for two more days until it is mandatory that I update to the latest version. At which point grindrmod will not work.
So, I'm looking forward to an update =_=

Thanks! I didn't know it was a whole new app there. The links to it seem dead in the xda app with the xposed modules.
@GrindrGuyNYC, is it possible to amend the photo viewer activity (when tapping on a profile picture) to always show the Android soft-keys? Every time I tap on a profile photo to open it, I have to swipe up to show the soft-keys to go back. Starts getting annoying really fast. Thanks.
PS. GrindrMod isn't listed on Xposed module library when I check in Xposed Installer (I use the one by DVDAndroid). I had to go to the repo online to download and install manually.

@GrindrGuyNYC I'm on oreo 8.1 with systemless xposed.
The module won't show in notification bar even if I choose show always.
Another bug (on nougat too, with "standard" xposed) is if I swipe or open a new profile module ask me to undo last refresh.
