I been having an issue trying to create a backup using Rom manager but have not been able to create one that will allow me to recover through recovery. all backup file were being created as IMG but all recently I've noticed Cache, data and system no longer have the extension IMG, it now has extension .ext3.tar is this correct? Is there a way for me to recover using these files?
Starting with version 5, Clockworkmod Recovery uses a new (faster) file format, which uses tar. The new recovery should work with older backup files, but the old CMR won't work with newer backups.
Have you actually tried restoring one, or are you just assuming that because it's different it won't work? It should work fine, as long as you have the newer CMR currently installed. If you restored an older backup, it could have also restored an older version of CMR, which would then prevent you from restoring a newer backup.
You can update CMR from within ROM Manager, and then should be able to restore newer backups.
You can also download the CMR .img file from http://www.clockworkmod.com/recovery_images.html and install it using the fastboot utility. This thread has info on how to do that, but has links to the older version of CMR.
Thank you for replying. Looks like when i was backing up, i was using an updated backup and would try to restore with an older apk attached to the custom rom.
I just created a backup and was able to restore it without any issues. Thanks again for showing me the light
Found this thread through a Google search and just thought I'd add my 2 cents.
I used Bionic Recovery Bootstrapper to install CWM recovery (v4.0.1.5). Later, I used ROM Manager to flash the updated recovery (v5.0.2.5). Made some backups. Flashed old recovery using Bionic Recovery Bootstrapper again and tried to restore the new ext3.tar backups I made.
ROM Manager has trouble rebooting to recovery, but Bionic Recovery Bootstrapper can still reboot to the recovery, even though it was the one installed with ROM Manager.
Thanks for shedding some light on this. I am going to reinstall ROM Manager, flash new recovery, reboot to it using the reboot button of Bionic Recovery Bootstrapper app, and restore my backup!
Edit: ROM Manager doesn't have problems booting into recovery anymore (not sure what I must've been doing wrong previously) so I guess I am not even going to use Bionic Bootstrapper anymore, since ROM Manager downloads the most recent version every time.
Hey everyone!
Just got my phone back from repairs since I received the white light of death. I noticed a lot of people here looking for a Rogers Nandroid so I decided to upload mine.
Features:
Stock Rogers Rom Version: 2.3.5
Rooted using SuperOneClick (Zergrush)
CWM on Boot
Updated SU Binaries
*EDIT
New Instructions for Restoring
After you download and extract the folder, change the folder name from Rogers Stock to any other name without a space! - This will ensure you donot get the MD5 Mismatch error when restoring the backup!
[*]The renamed folder needs to placed in "/sdcard-ext/clockworkmod/backup/<here> ". sdcard-ext is referring to your external sd card. If you don't have one then your clockwork recovery folder should be in your internal sd card so it should be placed there instead.
After restoring, Please do a data+cache+dalvik wipe or a factory wipe from settings in order to wipe any of the settings left from my backup.
Link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3350670/Rogers%20Stock.7z
Tips:
If your phone is stuck in AP/Fastboot mode and you want to restore to Rogers ROM
Download RSDLite and either the Retail.BR/Vivo LATAM fastboot files from the development section.
Restore your phone to working state by using RSDLite.
Root and install CWM on boot.
Finally, boot into CWM and restore Nandroid in order to return to Rogers Stock.
If you have ever used a RetailBR/Vivo fastboot on your RAZR, you will be able to restore this backup but you won't be able to receive the 2.3.6 Rogers OTA. In that situation, you're better off using the 2.3.6 RetailBR fastboot from the developers section and restore that using RSDLite. Do not restore this backup over the 2.3.6 fastboot as this backup is 2.3.5!

Thank you, this is very useful

Yes. It should work fine for any Rogers Razr. You should be able to boot into CWM and restore. Make sure you don't have any SU backups using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper as I believe it does break the Nandroid Restore.
Will this fix my contacts force close problem from removing yahoo? It would be great if it does!
Thanks heaps!
Did you just freeze or did you uninstall a system app? If its just a freeze, then you'll have to unfreeze the app in order to fix the force close. If its an uninstall then yes this should restore all the apk's back to your phone as they come out of the box.
THANK YOU DUDE!
its not a fastboot, but it should works the same, right? i have safestrap installed might try this out...

Np, and yes it should work. In the odd case it goes wrong, you'll have to use the RetailBr/Vivo fastboot and restore using RSDLite since those are the only two that can be flashed onto the Rogers xt910.
Quick question....
Whst do you use to flash this? Bootstrap? Which version?
Coz i just realzed gsm phones doesn't work with safestrap...
Yep bootstrap is the way to go. You should install bootstrap and then cwm on boot. Make sure you copy my backup to the clockwork recovery folder on your external sdcard, go to backup/restore and then select it and let it restore. If you want your user data to stay, i believe you can go into advanced and do a /system restore only.
Also make a backup of your current one before you try this incase you encounter any errors and cant restore my nandroid.

So bootstrap really works only owith extrnal sdcard, huh? I installed it last night n I can't make a backup coz it cant mount sdcard lol...
Guess I'll stop by Canada computers tmrw!

PS: 3am reply? From Toronto? Nice
You can use internal sdcard as well however its not really suggested. I believe under mounts and storage you can go and mount the other card.
Thanks for the Rogers' backup, dude! I wish they would release ICS or 2.3.6 at least

tried doin this but gives me MD5 mismatch
Sorry I forgot to check up on the thread. You can bypass the MD5 mismatch by renaming the folder and removing the space in the folder name and it should flash perfectly.
Thank you for putting this up I just have a question if there is anyway that I can use this to restore a bricked phone. I can't go beyond AP fastboot
No you cannot use this as a fastboot however you can use the Retail.BR fastboot flash that to get phone working. Then root/install CWM and restore this nandroid in order to get back to stock Rogers state.
hey Evon, another quick question:
dont u need to unroot to get official Rogers OTA with your Nandroid?
I'm not sure about OTA's. I believe you can still be rooted and receive OTA's however you must be on the stock Rogers Rom in order to receive the Rogers OTA. I could be wrong since there has not been any OTA so far from Rogers so we'll have to wait and see.
How to switch recoveries
Index
1. Benefits of BMM and SS
2. Switch from SS to BMM
2.1 Basic usage of BMM
3. Switch from BMM to SS
This little guide is a work in progress! Within the next time I will insert pictures, detailed explanations about several features, etc. For now it's only a quick switching guide for SS users or beginners.
Who wants to know everything?
Whirleyes, the creator of BMM provided a great virtual BMM on his website! It works like you had a working BMM on your computer, you can browse through the menus and get detailed explanations. A user tutorial is also available which explains everything!
Find it here: http://www.projectlense.com/BootMenuManager/Tutorial/
Any help is welcome to extend this guide. Otherwise give me some time to finish it. Thx!
1. Benefits of BMM and SS
BMM:
BMM is a full featured recovery system and is recommended for developers or advanced users. While a high featured recovery is nice for developers it can be a big disadvantage for normal users. If you don't know how to handle BMM you can brick your device very fast! But besides of that there are many benefits, such like the possibitlity to flash roms to the stock or 2nd system (webtop partition) - which aren't virtual systems. A generic partition provides better performance and it could affect the behavior of some tweaks too. For me it provided also better battery life.
The system Keeper can be used to install root to your selected system, unroot or also install BMM after flashing to the stock system - after flashing to stock system BMM will install itself autmatically! So it protects you from loosing BMM.
An additional feature is the compatibility to Safestrap! You can boot your Safestrap Slots with BMM, or restore nandroid backups from SS to one of your BMM systems. I'm not sure if this works with SS vice versa.
Based on CWM 6 Touch
Multiple Boot (Select any system on startup)
Boot modes (Kexec, 2nd-init, Insecure adb)
6 Rom Slots (2 generic, 4 virtual img-slots)
Backup (Fast, Full, Selective)
Restore (Fast, Full, Selective)
Wipe (Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache, Battery stats)
System Keeper (Backup, Install, Uninstall Root, Install BMM)
Mount (Format ANY partition, mount partitions - e.g. for use with Filemanager)
Stock System flashable
2. System uses the Webtop partition (which is unused since Moto ICS! That means there are 1,3gb of unused space! BMM uses the webtop partition for userdata. Only disadvantage is: Userdata size is limited at 1.3gb)
Virtual Slots (Create partition images with preferred sizes)
Custom Install-Binary allowed on all slots (e.g. usefull for updater-script commands using Busybox, Aroma Installer, etc)
File Manager (Aroma Filemanager, Root)
ADB
No Rom-side hardcoded slots! Roms will work on every slot!)
Firmware Flashing Section (Stock ONLY:
- Backup Kernel
- Restore Kernel
- Flash Kernel
- Flash Baseband (Radio.img, bp.img, lte.img)
- Backup CID
- Erase CID
- Restore CID
Safestrap:
The main intention of Safestrap is to be SAFE for users. The stock rom system will stay untouched so you cannot brick your device. But the use of virtual slots isn't always an advantage. Roms running on virtual slots can cause lower performance. For normal users who just want to play around or test a new rom SS is the best choice. For users who want to try their own developed stuff or just take the best out of their devices, the best choice is BMM.
Based on TWRP Touch
Fixed Dual Boot (select a slot in recovery as default boot)
Boot modes (Kexec, normal)
Backup (Full, Selective)
Restore (Full, Selective)
Wipe (Data, Cache, Davlik Cache)
Mount (mount partitions - e.g. for use with Filemanager)
5 Rom Slots (Stock + Only virtual img-slots)
Slots for Kexec Roms are hardcoded!!
Virtual Slots (Create partition images with preferred sizes)
File Manager (TWRP)
ADB (?)

2. Switch from SS to BMM
I will only describe the process for installation and the basic usage of BMM. Advanced users might know of find our how to handle additional features - otherwise you can still ask here.
If needed make a full backup of your slot and place the backup somewhere on your computer or wherever it's safe.
Boot into your stock rom
Open the Safestrap app
Hit "Uninstall recovery" and wait for the process to be finished
Open Play Store and search for "Bootmenu Manager" (Make sure it's the version 0.3.4!)
Download and install it
Open the new app and allow su rights
In the appearing menu hit "Install" and finish the process
When done, BMM is installed
2.1 Basic usage of BMM
I will describe the step by step process to install a rom.
But Whirleyes postet on his website an awesome "virtual Bootmenu" where you can brwose through the full menus! It's great, so you can get in touch with it and see how it looks like! You can find it here:
Virtual Bootmenu Website
Reboot
Wait until the BMM splash screen appears, touch the screen and select "Settings"
Now select a system you want to prepare (for rom installation)
- System 1 is your Stock System
- System 2 has limited userdata (max 1.3gb)
- System 3-6 are virtual slots, similar to Safestrap
For System 2 you will only have to prepare the Cache partition. This can be done by hitting the "ACTIVATE" button in System 1 settings
For System 3-6 you have to create the partition images - similar to Safestrap - just pick your preferred sizes.
After preparing your system, you can go back by pressing the "Back" hardbutton until you see the splashscreen again
Now enter "Recovery"
You will see several options (similar to CWM)
First you need to switch to your prepared system
Tick "Switch System" and select that system you've just prepared. You will notice that the color of the buttons has been changed (Each system has its own color!)
Now are able to flash a rom
Select "Install zip from sdcard"
If needed "change the zip location" to int/ext storage
Navigate to your rom zip, select it and confirm
Repeat the last 3 steps for Gapps or whatever you want to flash
When done, enter the "reboot options" in the main menu
You can select whether to reboot as usual, reboot directly into your preferred system, reboot into bootloader or stock recovery)
Otherwise just perform a normal reboot and select your system at the splashscreen
That's it!
3. Switch from BMM to SS
I will only explain how to uninstall BMM safely and install SS!
Boot into System 1
If needed make a full backup of your slot and place the backup somewhere on your computer or wherever it's safe.
Open the BMM app
Select "Installer"
Select "Uninstall"
When the process has finished BMM is removed
Make sure you have the Safestrapxx.apk on your sdcard
Open it and select "Install recovery"
That's it.

*Thanks Whirleyes, the creator of BMM, for the great work!
*Thanks Hashcode, the creator of SS, for his awesome work!
Great initiative!
It would be nice to add for BMM users
system 2, in order to be used, it has to be activated first:
when device boot, do not press recovery, but settings, system 2 and activate
for flashing kernels, there must be NO SPACE into the path like
firmware/kernel.EU.JB/boot.img

The system 2 thing ias already there - but for all systems.
Safestrap only has 5 slots (stock + 4 virtual) you might also want to note that safestrap kexec requires specific slots.

File manager?
All,
I have recently made the jump to BMM. I am enjoying using it once I had it figured out..kind of. I am up and running with stock/2nd slot and a third vurtual. How do you get the file manager working once in BMM? It gives an error saying aromafm is not installed? Is this an additional add on? If so how do you install it so it works in BMM? TIA

If you have an accessable recovery installed you can restore your system (resotre nandroid, flash rom, etc). But if you cannot boot into any rom you have to flash using RSD.

Ok, I"m using liquidsmooth on slot 3, but still can't restore my stock rom to stock slot. I messed it up by flashing cm10(JB) accidentally on stock slot, while I had an ICS stock rom installed on it.
What if I don't have a nandroid backup? What rom should I flash to go back to stock ICS on stock slot (XT910, Latam)?
Thanks in advance!
you should know before you flash something... Look inside the firmware super thread.

Is there a how to thread for using bmm? I can't find anything recent with step by step instructions. I managed to get a rom flashed, but I'd like a better idea of how to use BMM/Aroma.

Thanks so much for the post!
Here's what I did...
I uninstalled BusyBox and reinstalled using busybox_v1.19.4_wraithdu--installer_script_v14.zip.
I uninstalled V6 and started again with V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-Update9_RC11.sh.pdf.
I ran the script (su,boot), 99supercharger.sh.
I experimented...
I uninstalled V6 and reinstalled using V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-Update9_RC12-BlackDog-63457_Fix.sh.pdf, then 99supercharger. No joy
I successfully ran Ultimatic Jar Tools. No joy. Still 75%.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
not sure
Ultimatic Jar Tools, should only fix, ics and jellybean roms
could try selecting local prop instead of build prop
what happens if you
run 99superchager.sh
don't reboot
rerun supercharger
if you get 100%, then smanager isn't starting at boot
options
see if you have a /data/99SuperCharger.sh , if so try running that one at boot
manually run 99superchager.sh after every reboot
make a Script Manager widget for /data/99SuperCharger.sh on your homescreen and simply launch it after each reboot.
use a different script program
I've tried both build prop and local.prop.
When I run /data/99SuperCharger.sh I'm told no need to rerun. Apparently it's already running.
Maybe I'll reinstall gingerbread 2.3.5 and try again.
Here's what I've done...
1. Wiped back to Factory Reset
2. SBF to Gingerbread 2.3.5.
3. Ran SuperCharger Startup Kit except for BusyBox. BusyBox 1.19.4 was pronounced ok in V6.
4. Ran V6 script.
5. Ran 99SuperCharger.sh with Boot engaged.
Still get: Lose 25% - build/local.prop ADJs NOT Found.
I do not find "BootLog_SuperCharger.log" or "Ran_SuperCharger.log!" to post.
Help. :crying:
"Lose 25% - build/local.prop ADJs NOT Found"
is not a 99SuperCharger.sh issue, the build prop is not getting edited, for some reason
some possible fixes
have voodoo rootkeeper installed? if so try deleting su backup

Haven't tried this one yet: DX2Batchroot_2013.exe.
try an older v6: Good idea.
eclipse 2.3: I may give this a try first unless I shouldn't. Thoughts?
not sure what the problem is, but sometimes system files get stuck.
I think best option is install a rom or restore someone elses nandroid.
can't tell you if eclipse is better for you or not, too many variables, how you use it, apps you install...
but for most people, eclipse is better, than stock
the other option, restoring a nandroid.
I am currently uploading a nandroid of 2.3.5 stock with v6 installed, will post link when it's ready, but will be another 40mins or so (slow connection)
> I am currently uploading a nandroid of 2.3.5 stock with v6 installed
Wow! Thanks!!!
Do I install with RSD Lite software or do I need to download another app?
Restoring a downloaded nandroid
Download nandroid zip file Sendspace link, or DevHost
verify md5 checksum: 7f29ec299e550708e5c051040221a762
unzip with 7zip or other file compression software
move folder 2013-08-17.14.00.17 to Clockworkmod>backup Folder on phone, if you don't have a clockworkmod folder create one, open it, then create a folder named backup in clockworkmod folder
Installing BSR/ Bootstrap recovery
1. Download BSR onto your computer http://www.mediafire.com/download/y19y123n6tauq7s/MOTODX2_Bootstrap_signed.rar
2. unzip it and place it on your external sd card (with your phone in usb mass storage mode.)
3. on your phone go to Settings-->applications and make sure "unknown sources" is checked.
4. use your file manager app to locate it it
5. press it and choose package install, and install it.
6. you will now have an app called system recovery, open it and press "install recovery"
***Important: In order to enter BSR/System recovery YOU MUST BE PLUGGED INTO A WAll CHARGER, not the computer or anything else, A WALL CHARGER***
restore a backup
1. Once you are sure you are plugged into a wall charger press "Recovery Mode" inside the system recovery app and in a few seconds your phone should reboot into the recovery menu.
2. Once you are in the recovery menu press volume down 6 times and "backup & restore" should be selected. Press the power button on top of your phone to select it.
3. select restore
4. select where the clockworkmod folder is, external or internal, then select 2013-08-17.14.00.17
5. confirm restore, yes
6. After the restore is complete you should be back at the original bsr menu and "Reboot System Now" should be highlighted. Select it.
7. You have just successfully restored a nandroid.
Shadow,
I'm so proud of myself. With your excellent instructions, I've restored a nandroid!
I opened V6 and indeed it was working at 100%. Several features were not activated; so, I turned them on. I suspect you already know what happened. I bricked my phone. I think my version of V6, BlackDog is not the same as the one on the nandroid. Or my old backup data files on the SD card caused problems.
I decided to experiment. I SBF'd back to 2.3.5 and installed Eclipse as you suggested. How nice! I love it. It's running perfectly.
I attempted to install V6 with Eclipse. Nothing would install.
I'm enjoying Eclipse so much I may just leave things as they are... unless I get the experimental bug and play around with CM7. I understand I'll have to SBF back to 2.3.4. Who knows. I may even restore back to the nandroid.
Thanks for all your help!

I opened V6 and indeed it was working at 100%. Several features were not activated; so, I turned them on. I suspect you already know what happened. I bricked my phone. I think my version of V6, BlackDog is not the same as the one on the nandroid.

best to only use the RC versions, I may need to make a note, for others, to use the same v6 version.
Or my old backup data files on the SD card caused problems.

could be either or neither, not a bad idea to backup data on sd card and format
what speed class is the sd card? it's the number on the card in the C, or if it's a UHS-1, it will have a U with a 1 in it.
Thanks for all your help!

some of the Droid X2s are glitchy and just will not do some things
I may upload a eclipse nandroid, that has v6 installed, depends on how you use the device, if v6 helps or not.
After a while any rom will become less responsive, just the limitation of the phone and software we have to work with.
how long that will take varies from user to user, weeks or months.
When that happens best option is restore a known good nandroid or reinstall the rom.
eclipse 2.3 with v6 installed nandroid.rar
included V6_SuperCharger folder needed on sd card to uninstall.
Shadow...
I have the file. Thanks!
It may be a while before I can work with it. I'm kinda swamped right now.
I'll keep you posted.
Shadow,
Where should I put "V6_SuperCharger"?
On the internal SD card, should already have one, just rename the old one, or delete it.
I have a Verizon droid RAZR that the screen has cracked in many places. I have bought a new phone and have no plans for ever using this as a phone. What I would like to do is install a ROM over the stock one, not dual boot both. I was also wanting to get rid of all of the phone stuff, no Verizon apps, no SMS, and no phone logs. I would use this like a tablet and would love to save as much space as possible. I don't need the moto docks (I don't have one). Basicly strip this thing down to just bare necessities. Is it even possible to do this? If so is there a ROM that gets great battery life? Thanks for reading my question.

You can flash ROM on your stock slot and then delete the useless apks.
Try any AOSP ROM. It should work fine.

I have downloaded tonyt's aokp rom. I have extracted the rom to its own folder and have looked at the apps in the app folder. System>app. I am not sure which of these I can get rid of. I would like to get ride of anything that is VZW or phone related just keeping maybe the contacts. I dont know what apps should be gotten rid of with out breaking the rom. Sorry I'm a noob. All I have done was flash a few roms, never tried to remove apks before. Do I need a cellphone broadcast for location services like maps and for the in browser location? I have safestrap installed. It will not let me flash a rom over stock rom. I am trying to find a way to get cwm or twrp installed instead.
ok bricked my phone. Device would restart and get the red moto logo, then nothing, blank black screen. rebooted the phone and could not get to safestrap. Used Matt's utility to install jb and reroot phone.
The procedure that I used to install the rom on my stock image is as follows:
1. copied rom zip to micro sd card
2. booted to safestrap
3. wiped cache, delvic, and system
4. installed rom zip through safestrap
5. no errors got success
6. reboot got nothing
I think anything could still happen even if SafeStrap didnt indicate any error after installation, that's why backup is important, also this ;

Notice 2 - MAKE SURE you see "Update partition detail...." in SafeStrap log console before you press "Reboot System" or you will not get boot!

You will need to do a complete wipe when flashing a new ROM, including /data.
Use latest SS. And make sure the ROM is compatible with the latest SS.

How do I format the internal storage? I have about 3 roms I have running and I have games and apps that I have uninstalled that left behind folders in root folders and some apps that did not get uninstalled also left behind some data. I tried doing a factory reset and also tried using safestrap to wipe internal but it fails. I made a folder in my system folder and put 2 pics in it then factory reset, wiped system data, and checked every box in the advance wipe options and that folder (along with the others) are still there.

Every slot has its own /data partition.
After you activate a slot, wipe /data along with system and cache.
That is called full wipe. It will remove all your apps, files and user settings will be deleted.
Then flash your desired ROM.
