Kinda annoying feature. Anyone know how to disable the screen turning on when getting a text?

Mine doesn't do that are you running a stock rom, and what carrier?
Mine doesn't do that either on Sprint.
Yea mine doesn't do that although I wish it did like my og EVO did

I'm on stock Rom. But every ttime I get a text, my screen lights up for about 3 seconds
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Since you didn't answer the question of which carrier, I am going with that its Sprint from the model number in your signature.
My girlfriend's S3 is also doing this on her AT&T variant. I haven't been able to find an answer.
I have an AT&T one and it won't do it for email or text and I really would like it to. Must be a setting. Someone has to know.
You have to change the stock app. Stock messaging app is bad anyways. Look into GO SMS Pro or another app of your choice. The app has what your looking for then disable your stock messaging app.
For email just use the Gmail client. This also has the option for it.
Its all about the apps folks. I don't think the stock app has a way to have the screen to just remain off.
I think he is using blazer Rom from phantomhacker cause I also notice it. Sprint version btw.

Workaround
Found a quick fix to this that is way better than defaulting to another SMS app. Simply download "SMS pop up" from the play store, make sure its enabled, and under additional preferences untick "screen on pop up" and then under notification settings untick "enable pop up" (unless you want the pop up of course). You will have to untick the regular SMS app notifications under settings but its a fix that's working for me that still keeps the stock messaging app intact.

That will stop the screen from waking every time but won't turning notifications off in sms settings also prevent the phone the phone from letting you know at all that you have a message?
that is a nice woorkaround but too bad we have to use double the battery and 2 apps running at once to stop it. There has go to be a solution !
I made a thread about this yesterday. It happens to me everytime. On vzw
I'm running ATT variant and my screen wakes up when I get a text. Im currently rooted and looking through the messaging defaults with root explorer. Im sure theres a setting in there that is set to 1 or true that is doing this or vice versa for everyone else. I havent had an android device for quite some time so it might take me a bit to find it. If someone is a bit more experienced than me they'll probably find it faster.

Following what I wrote: If you disable the stock sms notifications under messaging>setting then the phone will not recieve any notifications regarding new messages. This is why SMS Popup is used instead. It uses a notifications service in conjunction with an optional popup to notify you when a new message arrives. If you enable notifications in SMS Popup, you will still receive notifications when new messages arive. SMS Popup is the service that will receive and notify you of the message, not the stock messaging app. It also has some other features including color customization of the LED light and selecting a specific SMS vibrate pattern. Like I said if you disable the "Enable popup" setting under the "notification" menu in SMS Popup it can serve as a intermittent workaround. As for the need to install it to accomplish this simple setting, it has a low battery and memory footprint as it is mostly a simple service and not a fully effective SMS replacement application. I have spent countless hours trying different solutions to this issue and this seems to be the best most effective workaround I could find whilst dodging SMS replacement apps like handscent and chomp. It was imperative for me to not have my screen light up in my pocket as I choose to go without a lock screen. Hope this helps and is a worthy solution until some development ushers in a new more efficient solution. Cheers!
There's got to be a way using root privileges to stop this. Heck we can stop the annoying wifi pop ups.
Thanks srath16 for finding a hackish way around.

I completely understand now. That's. Cool. There got to be a more in house way of doing this, but that would work in the meantime. Thanks for sharing.
This happens to me also and im running on Verizon at the moment would love if someone could find a way to fix this.

Right. This isn't an "issue", it's just a feature that Samsung has deployed that some like and some don't. Being able to turn it on and off though would be nice.

Since the Evo 3D cannot be rooted yet I am hoping that this is something that can be explained and someone has had similar problem and has a answer.
I have had te Evo 3D since launch day and Handcent is probably the first app I installed on day one ad seemsed to be working just fine until a few days ago.
When I get a voicemail it use to go to the stock visual voicemail but the last few I had gotten my notification started coming from Handcent. It would say I have a message and to call to listen and it would have a 480-970-0000 # to call. Now if I am not mistaken that is a Google voice number but I haven't ever used google voice even though I have a google voice account.
I kept trying to go through Handcent to see if all the settings were correct but I couldn't find anything out of place. Then I did the only thing I could think of and that was to remove handcent and my visual voicemail returned.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to correct it?
I want to keep and use Handcent but I can't figure out why it just started interferring with voicemail.
Can anyone explain this oddity? I hate the stock message app and hope there is a solution because I don't want to have o continue using it and want to us Handcent.
Now I haven't tried to use GoSMS to see if it will work with it but isn't it on the exact same format as Handcent? They are so similar I wonder if they aren't really the same app just different names.
you have to uncheck handcent's setting making it the default messenger. the native sms app has to get the trigger for visual voicemail.
thanks, I was wondering if that would do it. I did uncheck it and voicemails seems to be working properly.....
Where exactly is that option to "uncheck handcent's setting making it the default messenger" can't seem to find it. I myself am having that problem.

I had this problem too and this fixed it for me as well.
In the handcent sms app hit your menu button, go to settings => application settings => default messaging application => disable.
If you intend to only use handcent as I do, make sure to turn off your notifications in the stock messaging app so you don't receive two notifications per 1 message.
Also, on a side note, I had a problem with sending picture messages over handcent, they would always seem to get hung up and not send, but when i tried to send on the stock app it sent just fine. Anyone else have this happen to them?
Thanks for the help, found it!
Also, I get the same problem sometimes when sending picture msgs, where they get "hung up" as you mentioned. Usually when that happens to me, I cancel the picture mail then resend it again. That sometimes works for me.
i have the same problem with gosms but i dont have any option to disable it as the default messaging app

Actually I just went through this and there is a solution that lets you use Handcent and Visual Voicemail.
In Handcent the latest version allows you to make Handcent your default SMS/MMS app. Of course the natural thing to do is select that. Well that's what messes up VVM and causes those annoying text messages instead of the actual voicemails being sent to your device.
Just select "Disable" for that feature. (turn off all notifications on the stock message app so you don't get double notifications).
Next go to VVM and click on the menu and select compose. Put your own phone number in the TO: address field. Next, record a short 1 or 2 second message. Then press send. This will cause VVM to begin working again and in a few seconds any voicmails that are waiting will be sent to your device.
By the way, I've sent the folks at Handcent an email letting them know of this issue. They have yet to respond.
Thanks for the workaround mvansomeren, this was driving me NUTS! All temp fixed thanks to your instructions. Hopefully Handcent will release an update.
I know the feeling! Glad it worked for you as well.
Coming from the IPhone, there was one application to send and receive text messages. At my last count, my phone came pre-installed with about three different programs to send/receive texts.
So my first question is what program are you all using for Text Messages and why do you like that program over any other?

My guess is you will also get recommendations for Handcent which I have used in the past. I think you will find those are the top two.

Yeah, GoSMS and Handcent are the big two if you're not liking the stock messaging app. Both are nicer in appearance, have more features and have plenty of free or cheap themes available in the market.
I am using Att Messenging for voicemail, but it also notifies me when I have a text. Is there any way to use it for voicemail but not text? I dont want it (att app) to notify me when i gets a text. I want my messenging app to do that instead. (i hope that makes sense)
I am in the same boat as you. I love the note, but I am not as comfortable with the fragmented means of doing things such as texting...Too many overlapping ways to do something simple like texting or emails.
Hell, I am having some difficulty in getting calls...I am not sure if I have the ringer too low, or what, but I miss so many calls it isnt even funny. I always go back and look at ringer volume, but it always appears to be where I left it. But when I am at my desk, it rings through just fine. It must be a volume thing...
But, I am having a fun time learning...

I use Google Voice. Free unlimited texting. It doesn't do mms, yet. But I rarely used that anyways.
I no longer pay for texts.
ears ereatun
Does MMS still go through to your phone like it currently does? In other words, do all SMS go through Google, while MMS go through ATT?
If data is shut off mms does not go through. So yes, MMS goes thru ATT data even thou they say you are not charged data to send mms.

I wouldn't call it fragmented. There is more choices on the Android OS and that IMHO is a good thing. If you like the stock SMS app then don't install any other SMS apps. If you like GO SMS or Handcent be sure to turn off notifications on the stock SMS app so you don't get double notified.
I just don't think there is any fragmentation. The user can freely choose what works and doesn't on his or her phone.
I use the stock messaging app. I also use SMSNotifier from mapeapps.com. It does everything I need as far as repeat notifications and a few extras.
The problem is that you cannot turn off notifications in the "Att messages" app.

You can install the AT&T Visual Voicemail apk from another thread in general, I think. Then you remove att messaging. Then you have to call att, and have them reset your data plan to one with visual voicemail (even if it was already done). Then you can connect the visual voicemail app.
Alternatively, you can just use youmail, Google Voice, or Phone Fusion for vvm.
Hi guys,
Basically I want the benefits of Smart Alert (the vibrate when you pick the phone up if you have a missed call or message), but because the default messaging client is rubbish, I use Handcent SMS. Unless I want to deal with the double notification from Messaging and Handcent, I can't seem to find a way to get Smart Alert to work with Handcent SMS.
Does anyone have any ideas as to if this is possible?
Also, a quick secondary question that may need it's own thread. On my SGS1 I used Tasker to sync my podcasts in the morning by turning on WiFi and Autosync. I tried to set up the same script I had before, but Auto-Sync 'is unavailable on this device' which is really grinding my gears.
Thanks xda, keep up the great work.

I have been using this method, too. I wonder if Tasker could mimic the effects of Smart Alert?
When I get a text while the screen is off, it shows up in the lock screen like it's supposed to. But if I pull the text down to the ring to unlock the screen, it will open up the text conversation at the 1st message in the convo instead of the most recent one. So I have to either:
A. Scroll all the way through the conversation down to the bottom, or...
B. back out to my list of threads and go back into the one from the person who just txt'd, at which point everything behaves like normal (showing the new text.)
Does anybody else get this?
I've had it happen a couple of times, not often though. Might be a silly question but have you rebooted the phone? I had a glitch when I first got mine with the audio and when I did a hard restart (with the fast boot option off) it fixed it. I've actually just left fast boot off because it starts up plenty fast no matter what.

I get this all the time. Not really a solution but an alternative to scrolling, you can touch the screen when in conversation and on the right a slider will appear and you can just slide this to the bottom. It scrolls by days so its much faster than just flicking through.
I don't know if anyone else has this problem but when I get a picture message, the date and time of the last text on the main thread screen (where you can see my conversations) for that conversation thread is always that of the pic message and only updates to the correct date and time of the last text when the pic message is deleted.

The messaging app is quirky as hell. It redraws on me SO many times; it's so frustrating. It constantly shows people's phone numbers before switching to the names. I also experience the bug mentioned in this thread quite often.
It's a shame, really. The messaging app is beautiful and I LOVE that it natively does group MMS - something I'm shocked that Google has yet to implement when it's a much coveted feature in iOS. Being a college student, I see group MMS used quite often, especially with group projects.
I would switch to another messaging app, but I'll miss the lock screen functionality. I also find the UI of most alternatives to be pretty ugly.

Man, I thought it was just me. Like another poster mentioned, the app is beautiful, but glitchy. Has anyone else noticed it switchingover to 3G and not switching back? My wife has a razr and has good signal when I drop to 3G. Seems like software, so maybe new radios will fix it?
I too experience redrawing and time being incorrect when a mms is involved in a thread between someone. And switching to the middle "sms/mms" tab does fix it. Also sometimes I'll have to back out to the main messaging screen and then go back to a thread in order for it to update. Example: I'll get a text, I go to the thread and then get another text from the same person right after. I know so because it shows up in the notification bar, but it won't show up in the thread unless I exit it and come back to it so it can refresh.
here's HTC's response as to why it redraws:
"As far as the SMS application, I have noticed that. To be honest with you, the SMS application just like the People application is only an application that is designed to read a database, it doesn't actually store the information. Not only this, but as you may already know, SMS is sent through the network as number only, so when the phone gets the message its actually nothing but a number and the contents (data/text). So, when the phone receives the message it places it in the dialer storage application's databases. Then the messaging application polls that database to load all the available message threads, then the message application polls the contact storage database to cross-reference all of the contact information with the information in the message, and finally it links the storage information from the contact database to the message"

very good point. and any other phone does this too. dont know why its a big deal here?
another issue I have noticed is if you are using the voice dictation with Google now to send a text to someone then that text may not show up in the messaging thread between you and that person.
Not to go too far off topic, but have any of you guys tried Handcent SMS? It's a free SMS/MMS replacement app that is so much better than any preinstalled messaging app I've used on Android.
You can have new messages show as a on-screen pop-up that can bypass the lockscreen and directly show you the message and let you reply from the pop-up. It also does group MMS (among many other options I won't go into detail about).
It's extremely more customizable than any Android stock messaging app I've seen, and it's the first thing me and all the friends I've told about it install on their new Android phones. Set aside 30 minutes to set all the options the way you want it, as there are many of them.
Stock htc one looks better in my opinion. I used to use go sms pro on my old incredible with aokp rom

Handcent just looks like a failed attempt at knocking off the iPhone messaging app. And its just heavy. The HTC one is polished and extremely smooth, and customizable to a reasonable extent.

So, I used to use Handcent for all my SMS, MMS messages until recently. Too many bugs on updates and it just isn't reliable. Unfortunately Handcent had some good features I can't seem to get working (or even if they are possible) on the the stock HTC app. First is custom notifications for texts. Handcent you could select a different tone for each person you sent/received messages from. Very convenient to know if my phone was in the other room if it was my wife, or just a nitwit friend. The other option is a mark letting me know the other person (if they are a VZW customer) received the message or not. You can select an option to notify you but I don't need a second notification sound telling me the other person got it. The check mark is enough, but I can't get it to work without the extra sound. When handcent was installed, I got the notification of a check mark in the stock app without the sound, but the second Handcent was deleted it no longer worked.
I'm sure there is a setting I'm missing or something. If the phone is not capable of this, is there another app anyone recommends? It really sucks that Handcent has gone downhill.

AFAIK the stock app is very limited. Have you tried gosms? they offer everything that handcent has + more.
Hey man, thanks. Go SMS is similar with all the features I'm looking for. Thanks.
I had the same problems with Hanscent. Really liked it for a long time. Finally tried a different app for SMS. Take a look at CHOMP. I think it does all the stuff you need. I like it a lot.
