So I had a USB OTG cable from Motorola, it works on my Xoom, but when I try to use it on my (Sprint) SGSIII, nothing happens. I don't get any "USB Connected" messages, I don't get any prompts to mount anything, and My Files doesn't show any new devices. I've tried the cable with two different flash drives, a camera, a camcorder, and a hard drive. All of them work on the Xoom, but none work on the SGSIII. I am rooted and have a custom recovery, but everything else is stock. I downloaded USB Host Diagnostics, and it says that the phone claims it should work (Kernel, Android API, Rooted API all claim support, but no device detected). I don't know if its that the Motorola cable is unique to the Xoom, or if it is just slightly different on the Xoom such that it doesn't work with Samsung's new connector. I don't have any other OTG hosts to test the cable with. Is there any way, without flashing a new kernel (just got my phone up and running, OTG would be nice but not worth the trouble of reinstalling everything, esp if it isn't going to work), to get the OTG working?
Thanks!

That's not true. I have a cable that works with my Sprint SGS3 and I'm sure it's not a samsung cable.
@OP: This is also with the stock kernel so the support is there.
Hmmm, yeah I've been looking everywhere to see what's wrong, but all I get is that it should just work. My guess is either my phone is broken, or the OTG cable I have is just slightly different and the phone doesn't recognize it, but the Xoom does cuz it was made with the Xoom in mind. Can someone suggest a cheap OTG cable that you know works on the SGSIII? Thanks!
i got mine from buy.com for like 4 dollars shipped came from Cali got here in 2 days :highfive:

Its definitely all the way in, the plastic casing of the cable is flush with the bottom of the phone. No luck =(
Just bought a cheap one from Amazon that qualified for prime 2 day shipping that I ordered along with my SanDisk 64GB card. Worked fine on the thumbdrive drive I tested. It fits in real tight though, I'm going to file down the two tings so it's easier to unplug.

There is no "samsung" or "moto" OTG cable, Its either wired right or not. Micro USB has 5 pins, not 4 like normal USB. The extra pin is what determines if its an OTG cable, a "factory" cable, and so forth and with OTG, that pin is wired to ground. I have a handful of $3 OTG cheapo adapters that work with everything I have thrown at them with my S3 and that includes class complaint, bus powered 5 in 5 out midi interfaces so unless the sprint device is horribly crippled in this regard, I'd say OTG works like a champ on the S3
personally, i bought a few of these: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B005QX7KYU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
just tested them with a whole range of devices (mouse, keyboard, usb drives, an ipod, another s3, a ps3 remote, a dslr) and works flawlessly
It was the Moto cable
So I had to go exchange my S3, there was dust on the camera sensor, and the Moto OTG cable didn't work on the replacement. I got one of the cheap amazon OTG cables, and lo and behold it works now. The Moto one works on the Xoom with no issue, as does the generic one I bought, but only the generic works on the S3. My guess is Moto did something slightly different with their cable, maybe used a pull-down resistor on the sense pin instead of shorting it to ground or just something that causes the S3 not to recognize it.

Why would HTC not put a standard micro usb port on this phone? I didn't realize until i had the phone at home or i may not have bought it. I have several useless cables now. Love the phone, Hate the charging port!
Most phones are geared for standard micro USB now. My moto miscro usb charger works on the Rezound, and so pretty much every cable I own does. So your problem is?
I never even tried to use one of my old chargers. the one that comes with the phone has that weird slit and looks totally different. i just assumed that they were different. I will have to try it out.
Havn't gotten my Rezound yet, but if it's anything like the Touch Pro 2. The stock adapter provides 1A of power and has a notch in it to prevent you from using that charger on anything unworthy.
Any Micro USB will work
I have a Touch Pro 2 and it took me 2 years to realize I could use a standard Mini-USB cable with it. I repaired and rebuilt my original USB cable when I could have just used one of the hundreds of regular ones lying around.
Point: I brought a standard micro-usb cable to the VZW store and made sure it worked in the Rezound before I bought it. It fits perfectly.
IMO HTC makes these ports this way so they can sell the HDMI adapter and other accessories and since they hold the patent on the plug shape they wont have any competition and it will be very difficult for hackers to reengineer a standard cable.
I hope this helps,
Dan
Why can people not search? This has been discussed. It is an mhl port. Your microusb chargers will work fine. And to the person who suggested patents, run a Google search. It isn't a proprietary HTC plug. The galaxy s II has the same port. Monoprice sells an adapter for $10. It is easy for companies to make 3rd party cables.

IMHO this MHL situation ROCKS. Micro USB is so fragile. In fact, my wife's DINC's port is all slutted out and barely works anymore. This MHL connector is longer and tougher than Micro USB and you get a solid 'click' when you insert the connector. Seems much more solid and reliable than any other design I've seen yet. Backwards compat with Micro USB is just icing.

This is known issue with Motorola phones having to use certain micro USB cables. Not all will work on a cellbrite machine or for data transfer. Not every USB cable is the same. I am not sure the technical reason for it, but BB cables do not work. For what it is worth BB uses USB A to micro USB "B" cables.
The easiest way to tell if the cable will support debugging mode. The charge only cables will not trigger the debugging mode in the status bar.

Completely untrue. I have never unpacked my Razr's charge/USB cable. It is still in its box. I use the USB cable from my first-generation B&N Nook to charge and transfer data. I sideloaded over 20 gb of data onto my card with it and use USB tether with it.

well according to the quote above, BB cables do work.
And ive been charging my Razr on my BB Tour cable just fine all day.
OK some Blackberry cables do not work. This isn't even a debate. Just Google. There are several articles on this that go into what causes it. Most micro USB cables do work just fine. So don't say that "well I used these hand full of cables" so I'm going to pass that off as scientific proof that you must have a defective phone.
What idiot would pull a random cable have it work and say well that proves they all work?
It's mostly a problem with Motorola phones and some HTC. It has something to do with the amps (or something) the phone needs out of the cable. While all micro USB cables have the same number of pins, apparently not all have the same number of wires connecting all the pins. This is what I have read, I have not actually stripped a cable to find out.
I do have daily experience transferring data through all kinds of phones and we have a couple of cables that will not work on the Droid 3, X2, Bionic, or Razr. They are not defective cables because they do work on some other phones.

No problem here either, I've used cables as different as
2 metre könig usb cable with fake gold plating (really cheap brand)
0,7 metre cheap plastic cable I found in a box at work
The two original moto cables
A hair thin samsung original cable

I searched up "MHL hdmi" and got a few threads from other phones forums on XDA; half were before our phone came out or the cable was available.
My question is which mhl adapter actually works on our phones (i777)
I've seen a large variety out there; ranging from white to black, 2 cables or 1 cable +inlet for power cable, "samsung" imprinted mhl adapters, and OEM ones.
I've read some distort the phone screen while connected to the tv, others cut off wifi while connected, some OEM can use remotes to operate the phone, while others didn't or OEMs not performing properly.
I've seen generic ones from $6 up, OEM logo'd ones at $6 and OEM packaged ones at $33+
Do we have a specific model/brand sure to work without error? Using TV remote is a plus. I've seen some for sale with wireless mini keyboards (bonus) and that catches my eye

I'm personally just using one random black one I got on ebay, seems to work fine.
I would THINK MHL is a standard, and though some might not function QUITE as well as others, they should all serve their basic purpose.
I haven't seen any that don't require USB power though, mind linking to the one you've found? Maybe link the ones with the Mini Keyboards...? I'm interested.

It works with ics. Try this, plug hdmi cable from tv to adapter plug power cable from wall adapter charger to adapter. Then plug into phone. Also what kind of mhl adapter do you have? I personally went through a few and ended up with getting the samsung one for me it works the best. Others had flaky power adapters or reports of doa. Anyway try again like that if it doesn't work try changing hdmi cables I've seen people have that as their cause as well. Also I can tell you that mhl and blue tooth and wireless work awesome on ics better than gb. I can even use it with a ps3 controller etc..

I don't think it works on AOKP or CM9, without installing an extra app. I've been using it on SHOstock 2 just fine. I think the TW ROMs have the support built in. I know 2.3 MIUI does not support MHL.
It only needs the power adapter if your TV does not support MHL. If your TV is MHL compliant it will send power over the HDMI port and charge your phone. The standard is still new, almost no TVs support it yet. You can still mirror the screen over HDMI with a MHL adapter, but you have to power the adapter. MHL compliant TVs should be able to control the phone through the TV, but because those TVs are as common as unicorns I haven't tested it. With a non MHL compliant TV all it does is accept the input from your phone. You must still navigate on your phone. But, you can use a Bluetooth keyboard and/or mouse to control your phone wirelessly.
I got the cheapest MHL adapter on eBay that shipped free from inside the US. I think I paid ~$7. Its worked fine for me over the past 6 months.

I connect the adapter to the HDMI cable then the power cable to the Adapter, and then I connect the adapter to my phone. The tv recognizes that I have the HDMI cable plugged in then the screen goes black. While I have the adapter plugged into the phone, the phone works fine, only there isn't anything being displayed on the screen. I try to launch several video apps, still nothing. The weirdest thing is when I unplug the adapter from my phone, it causes the phone to freeze and I have to pull the battery to restart. Is anyone else having a simular problem and may know of a fix. Ive done a few searches but havent been able to find anything. I appreciate any help that I can get.

Have you tried toggling on/off usb debugging?
My OTG cable works fine. The odds are either your cable is not true USB OTG cable (it must short out one of the PIN at the microUSB connector side) or the custom ROM you are runing does not have USB OTG support. I'm running leaked UCLD3 ROM.

Yes there is. IIRC, the PIN5 must be shorted to ground on the microUSB port on the cable to trigger the phone into USB host mode. AOKP ROM might be created to ignore suck requirement but that's not how USB OTG works.

Has anyone found an MHL Extension?
I'm looking to hook up my Rezound to my car's screen as opposed to using a car mount. I found this in another thread which seems like it should be able to get the job done:
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Adaptor-Jetstream-Tablets-Package/dp/B005LSOPN4
The problem is, the cable length looks to be microscopic. If my car's screen is just a display, then I will need to access my phone's touch screen so I'll need some sort of extension (will be nice to see Google Music or Maps there for road trips). I want to hide the equipment in a compartment underneath the arm rest, so if I can do this with 1 cable coming out of the phone, it would be ideal; I probably won't bother if I need to have 3 cables hanging out of my phone.
I can't seem to find an extension anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas?

You don't need an extension. It just converts your micro usb to an hdmi out. You just need a 3-4 foot long hdmi cable. Assuming your headunit is hdmi compatible. Which I doubt it is, I know mine isn't and I have to use an hdmi to rca converter from there.

I don't think that will work with the Rezound.

From my understanding, that won't work. It actually outputs an analog signal over usb, where the rez outputs a digital signal. You're more than welcome to try it, but others have reported it not working on other MHL phones.

Thanks for the suggestion.
The problem is that from what I read, the HDMI out gives audio that isn't all that great. Also, I'm looking to have a setup where I can just plug in a single cable and be good to go.
With a longer HDMI cable, I'd have this bulky converter, a bulky HDMI cable, and another cable coming out of the compartment to provide power to the device. Very messy.
If I can get an extension, I can just pull a single cable which will act as a charger, audio out, and video out. Much cleaner .

I agree. This is basically what I've read.

After doing tons of research, I don't think a passthrough - extension cable exists. Even if one did, it would have to come directly from HTC because the dongle I linked above is a custom 12 pin connection used. It looks like the Rezound has all pins, which is why, in the above post I linked, the user was able to get the extra audio port working.
I think what I'm going to need to do is pick up this cable, splice the dongle cable, and extend it using the bulk of the OEM flyer cable.
Let me know how it works for you, because that would be a lot easier than my current setup. Mine goes MHL----HDMI----ANALOG(RCA) CONVERTER-----INDASH.

If I go through with it, I will. I purchased the SGSIII for my wife (to upgrade her to 4G so she can keep unlimited data) with the hope she'll be willing to swap and take the Rezound. She kind of likes Sense, and I want CM9 (which is already on the SGSIII).
If she wants to keep the SGSIII, then I probably will do this. I'll still need a converter, but bing able to keep all that hidden away in the center console compartment out of sight would be completely awesome.
In something a bit unrelated, the SGS III uses a custom coverter, so I'll need to "extend" that in a similar fashion as well.
I will say this though, the clarity compared to the phones screen on any of these indash monitors SUCKS. I almost like just attaching my View 4g to the dash and using that over the indash monitors. But it is nice having that larger 7 in screen sometimes.

I have my flyer mounted into a custom mount in my dash. I am using that HTC mhl converter box, and only use the 3.5 audio out. All the video is still on the flyer.
I haven't tried that cable I posted a link to but I guess it wad worth a try.

You don't have any pics of your setup do you? I'd be interested to see what you have.

Did you ever find a way to hide your MHL adapter away from the phone, and just extend the 5 or 11-pin connection to the phone? I tried the older 5-pin MHL adapter with the 11-pin to 5-pin adapter tip for my SGSIII and it works. However, when I tried to use a standard micro-USB female to male extension cable (www .amazon.com/Micro-B-Female-Extension-Manhattan-307420/dp/B007TLEDTW) between the tip and the MHL adapter, it wouldn't pass any video or audio.
