Hi guys,
I'm RMA'ing my Prime back to Asus to hopefully improve it's WiFi performance. I'm not really sure if there's anything they can do but it's just so terrible I can't live with it anymore.
The tablet is rooted (with Voodoo backup) but is not unlocked. If I remember correctly there is an option within Root Keeper to unroot. Is this all that I need to do in order to get it back to stock?
Also, the CS guy from Asus said that they might need to do a full wipe and reload of the OS. I'm guessing that I need to get the backup file that Voodoo uses to do it's magic off of my Prime. Anyone happen to know where that is kept and what it's called?
If they do end up reinstalling the OS I will still be able to restore root with Root Keeper, right?
Thanks in advance!

Hi I got my tablet few days back from asus RMA it comes full wiped and it has the 9.4.2.21 system version so the back up in Voodoo wont help you because you will lose root. Yes when you unroot the tablet it will be OK.

Wow, so I guess my only option to root if they do have to flash a new OS is to unlock and flash a rooted ROM?
There's no other way for me to recover root if I have the files from Voodoo?
Sorry, I'm not exactly sure about how Root Keeper does what it does.....

Now you dont need to unlock bootloader. The Viper tool will root your prime so you dont need to worry about rooting prime.
The Root Keeper keeps the root but when they repair your tablet the do a factroy reset and wipe so you would have a completly new OS like when you first time start your prime so the Root Keeper has nothing to do.

Thanks for the info Grilko!
I'm just a little confused because I had to do a full factory reset on my tablet last week and Root Keeper restored root afterwards with absolutely no problem. I'm just wondering what they might do at the service center that would interfere with it's ability to restore root as long as I kept a copy of the file and restored it when I got it back from RMA.
Anyway, that doesn't make a bit of difference if Viper tool can now root 9.4.2.21 but according to their post in the dev forums it still won't.....
just factory reset your prime, send it in
they'll send it back on .28
then just use this to root your prime

You cannot re lock it (if that is something that may disallow you to return it).
But they wont check. They wont be able to tell without trying to bootload something else
Being rooted isnt a huge deal.. (not as big of a deal as it being unlocked)
ViperMod does have an option to unroot
As for CWM.. ugh they wont notice that either
You should just uninstall the SuperUser app and call it a day
If they give you money, dont look back

ya i figured they won't notice the unlock just wanted to remove the super user app and cwm since it boots into it when ya do a factory restore
I tried running the Vipermod unroot but it just sits there as if it can't figure out what to do mind you same pc with the drivers installed I used to root the tf201 so how do I get the unroot to work with vipermod (saw somewhere someone said ya gotta reroot and then unroot not sure if thats right)
As for CWM recovery if there is a ADB shell command to remove CWM been trying to find someway just to remove it flat out.

Is your bootloader unlocked? If it is, you'd have to relock the bootloader and flash the stock recovery image.

try downloading Voodoo OTA Root Keeper then redo the process of updating. This might help, as it did with many rooted users.
My bootloader is not unlocked, and I have rootkeeper. I still get the dead android, even after a full system wipe.
Did you guys install the new google play market 3.1.5? If so try uninstalling the mareket update and then install the Prime update.
Updated perfectly fine for me from .15 -> .21
Used OTA Rootkeeper to keep my root
Only thing i've done is root, everything else is stock
C10 Serial if that helps
i thought the update isn't till tomorrow? ;o

Per your previous post. How do I re-lock booloader? I have a rooted prime, unlocked bootloader, and running a custom ROM. I have HDMI out problem which have recently materialized, can you post a link for a how to in this thread? Also, do you know if you relock bootloader, remove root, and install the orginal OTA update, can ASUS tell I had an unlocked bootloader with root if I RMA due to a faulty HDMI out?
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Probably OC and ATP tweak causing the trouble, because some system files (checked during install updated) are not standard any more
If you are rooted and you changed anything like deleting bloatware or changed your systemUI the update will fail... has to be stock
I have the same exact issue down to the dead android logo during 30% update process.
Again, NOT unlocked but ROOTED.
I have not modded any of the system file EXCEPT for the AGPS patch in the dev forum. I do not have the original files before the patch...someone help please.
Thanks,

You can't relock the bootloader and flashing a stock recovery would brick your tablet.
experiencing the same issue here I own a C2 model with locked bootloader, ota rootkeeper, ez overclock and some debloating, so I got no idea what to do lol
Same here.
Stock, rooted, bootloader locked.
I backed up *some* of the crap arrived with the device, tried to titanium them back, no dice.
Are we forever doomed to walk the planet with .15 when everyone will flash there <something-yummy-starting-with-Z-here>.350?
Meh.
is it possible to flash a stock .15 ruu from asus which would allow us to update? although that way I'm afraid we would lose root and would need to backup our data beforehand..
I had this problem on the .14 to .15 update also. Just reinstall the .15 update manually using this method you can get the .15 update from asus site just make sure you get the right version
Then try the OTA again after redoing the .15 and it finally should worked
I did what this person did on his post.

Dude, you're awesome as sniffing cocaine off a stripper's behind.
Per your advice, I followed asus manual update guide (would have post link, but xda says I'm too noob to do so) after which I OTA'ed like a champ.
Thx mate.
I finally ordered my Prime and I want to make sure I have the right order of operation. I don't want to unlock the bootloader until I know I have a solid unit without any issues (in case I need to return or RMA) but I do want to root. So right out of the box I need to use ViperMOD to root. Then I need to get the OTA rootkeeper app and set it up. Then I can go ahead and perform the .21 update and then use OTA Rootkeeper to get root back. Is that all right?
Sounds right to me. However, it might come with .21 already installed. In which case, you'll have to wait for a root method for that firmware.

If it doesn't come with .21 out the box, don't let it update to it when it asks.
And the bigger thing to watch out for is after using ViperMod, download RomManager and update to the newest ClockWorkMod. Last I new it had an older version of CWM bundled in and it was causing problems.
And whatever you do, if you flash a custom ROM, DO NOT try to flash back to stock.
Do your research and rooting/unlocking and flashing a ROM will pay off.
Good luck
Hi guys,
first of all i'm sorry for my bad English,
second, i'm looking for solutions for 2 weeks in every part of forum without success!
i explain all the steps i've done before the trouble with my TF201 European version (32gb)
rooted with UnlockRoot v.2.3 success
installed all my apps.
trying to update to official update 9.4.2.21 (always fail)
i decided to unlock device with official asus app - success
again fail to update.
i decide to install CWM success
i load update 9.4.2.21.zip in my MicroSd (like a tutorial i read)
once i reboot in recovery, obviously, i can't acces to my MicroSd to load the .zip file
Panic---Solved learning adb command
i pushed .zip file into sdcard and update.
success with all update io've done but everytime loop recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514088
i solved with this guide...
try to Root the Tf201 with all of tools, like vipermodPrimeTimev4.5 (fail), UnlockRootv2.3 (fail), Sparkyroot (fail), TransformerPrimeIcsNew (fail)
the message is alway the same
i tried to reupdate OS but nothing, always it's impossibile to found busybox and su
tried to rerun Asus Unlock Device App
fail for possible internet connection (impossible)
is there any flash downloadMode like Odin for my GalaxyS, for every problems i had Odin was always the answer, the last but my MR.WOLF!
now i got my TF201 Unlocked (no more warranty) but Unrooted.
i love to use custom roms like i did with my galaxyS but now it's impossible to install CWM cause i'm not rooted.
any suggestion?
second step is to bring device to Assistance and pay what i need to have it clear (unlocked but clear) but i know that you got the solution.
thankyou all
Bad luck my friend

Yeah man, that's bolex!! & you are out of luck.
I missed the OTA rootkeeper as well before I updated . No way yet to root 21, as far as yesterday midnight from what I remenber.
I did bring the unit back to the shop and exchanged it into the last showmodel ( still on HC)
Now it is updated and rooted.
Hopefully -vipervoy_ will find a new solution.

1. With Prime on .15 update (or earlier), get root
2. Install OTA rootkeeper
3. Upgrade to .21
4. Use OTA rootkeeper to get root back
This is the only way to have root on a stock .21 build.
If you upgrade to .21 before rooting and installing OTA rootkeeper, your cannot root (currently).

It's really simple, you must root before updating to .21, save your root with something like Voodoo RootKeeper, and then restore your root after updating. There is currently no way to do an original root on .21.
re
perfectly understood right now
the problem is that i'm already on .21 and i think i can't donwgrade right?
so i've to wait for next root system
thanks all

I lost root on my TF201 after flashing Craig Gomez's us-tf201-jro03c-10.4.2.15-stock-deodexed.zip ROM. In addition to losing root access, I still had Superuser installed, and it would not grant superuser permission to anything I was trying to use to fix the problem, such as Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, GooManager, etc. Also, Superuser did not even have superuser permission, but could not be deleted in the File Manager. Another big problem is that I could not boot into recovery, and I could not downgrade to ICS.
After trying a number of possible solutions that I found on this and other sites, I discovered Urkel's Fresh Start 1.0.zip. Here's the post:
<http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32677560>
If you are at a dead end, I highly recommend that you give this a try! Your bootloader needs to be unlocked, but I had already done that when I was still using ICS. I'm not sure if the unlock tool available on the Asus site will work with JB. All you have to do is download the Urkel's Fresh Start zip file to your computer, unzip it to the same folder on your computer where you have adb and fastboot, add the JB ROM that you want to use to that folder, and rename the ROM file to system.blob. You'll also need to install the drivers on your computer so that it can send data to your TF201. I used the drivers that are on the Microsoft site, but there is a link to some universal drivers in the post above. Connect the cable from your TF201 to a USB port on your computer, and after deciding which option you want to try, double click Fresh Root.bat or Fresh Start.bat. Fresh Start.bat will first install the TWRP 2.2.2.1 recovery (that's what recovery.blob is). It will then install whatever JB ROM you decided to use. I went with the 10.4.2.15 ROM that's now on the ASUS site. The Urkel batch file may then restore root access, but that didn't work for some reason in my case. I think my problem was not mounting \System. You can do this by booting into TWRP recovery that you now have, select the Mount button, and put an X in the top box. In my case it seems that the box becomes unchecked during reboot. I tried it several times and gave up, but there is another simple way to regain root access if you have made it this far. Download Superuser-3.2-arm-signed.zip and flash that using TWRP, and you will at long last have root access once again. I see that this file has already been mentioned in this thread, and it worked like a charm for me.
So why did I want root access to being with? It's because of that stupid GPS problem. GPS isn't really needed on a pad in my opinion, but things like that bug me (pardon the pun)! When I was still using ICS, I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, and then used GooManager to flash TF201_External_GPS.zip. This file allowed the GPS function in my TF201 to work just as well as the GPS in my Samsung Galaxy S2. Also, I see no change when I attach the GPS dongle. What does that tell you? I think for most people with the GPS problem, it's a FIRMWARE problem, not a hardware problem. I'm not having a wifi problem, but I suspect that this is also a firmware problem. If Asus is smart, they have someone reading these blogs to get some ideas on how to fix their problems. Instead, they've spent money sending people a GPS dongle that, at least in some cases, is just a waste of time and money. So I've reinstalled the GPS zip file, and my GPS works...so now Google Maps can tell me where I am. Thanks, I already know that most of the time. Another thing that seemed to help with the GPS problem...disable the stock browser and use the Dolphin browser instead. I have no idea why that should make a difference.
Since I am a noob (whatever man), I tried to spell this out so that it can be easily understood by other noobs. Good luck, hope this works for you.
