I am using Samsung Dive, I just tried it and it found my phone, though it needed wifi. I like it, it of course works and I'd be happy to stick with it, but am just curious if there are any potentially better options? I'm hoping for something that would work with just a GPS signal, if that's possible. Happy to stick with Dive, though.
Also, for backup, I'm using my Samsung account and daily backup. I'm guessing this is enough, is there anything again more effective?
Please note I am using stock and have no interest in rooting. Thanks for any help!

Cerberus is by far the best anti theft app out there.
Find it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lsdroid.cerberus
Afaik, Dive also has GPS tracking.
Samsung backup only does your settings. I'm sure you have already synced up contacts and are saving new contacts in your google account, so that's taken care of.
The only remaining thing is your apps and you'll have to be rooted for that I'm afraid, either to do a Nandroid or Titanium backup.

I use SMS backup/restore for SMS, very simple.
If you get Google + or dropbox you can instantly upload photos you take.

I use Avast! Mobile for antivirus and theft protection. Does everything Cerebus does, plus antivirus, all for free.
If you are rooted, nothing beats Titanium backup. With a Dropbox or Box or Google Drive account, it will back up your files to the cloud.
Anyone else use Android Lost? Seems good, but hard to say until you really need it.

Thanks, just installed Cerberus, however the Device Admin rights seems quite scary. I'm guessing without that enabled the app can't really do its job?
So when you say Samsung backup only does my settings, what do you mean? The settings of the phone itself? (Display, sound, etc.).
Yes I have Google account syncing my contacts, calendar, etc.
For apps it doesn't seem a big deal, I'll just keep screenshots of my downloaded list if I had to wipe and reinstall. Particularly as I will not be rooting.

Yup, I use Dropbox and have a task in Astrid reminding me to upload all photos every couple days in case I forget
I just tried ultimate backup and backed up all my downloaded apps to the sd card, it seems to have worked? Is it a bs app or have I just backed everything up without root?
There is an option in dropbox to upload photos as soon as they are taken. No need to remind yourself
When I root i will need to try titanium.

Admin rights are only required for the app to become uninstallable. Everything else works without it.

Does anybody have a good app that will back up the entire phone... especially the apps and settings.... to an online cloud. The really ideal way would be for it to backup to my home machine via blue tooth or wifi.
Ideally, the backup app would have a scheduler so I wouldn't have to worry about it.
The closest thing I found was myBackupPro, but I tried the free version and it didn't work. Told me that I had to purchase the pro version to get enough online space to back up my phone. Stupid.
Anyway, if you have a recommendation, I would love to hear it.
My backup pro is great and worth it

There has to be something else. Its hard to trust an app where the free "trial" version doesn't even work as expected.
You can always uninstall and get your money back if it doesn't work how you expected in 24hrs

1) Why the hell would I try and application when the trial doesn't work? Refund or no. And, I am more than likely not going to need to reinstall the backup within 24hrs..... at least I hope not. AND, the only way to test it is to do the factory reset and then hope the backup works. Why bother when the free trial fails??????
2) There must be an alternative that is more trustworthy?
Is this thread surveyed by mybackup pro shills?

Cease to amaze. You asked for help and suggestions for apps. I've used the app on my G1, MTS, and now the Vibrant and it replaces everything. Including location of homescreen icons, settings, contacts, apps (short of protected ones), etc...
And the trial is to give you a feel for the app btw...
You can also try Lookout, don't know that it backs up apps, but does backup data. Will TEST FOR YOU now...
Ok, lookout only backs up contacts and pictures. Sorry, my backup pro is probably gonna be your best solution... Take it or leave it...
I would recommend Titanium Backup, and then you can copy your backup files to the cloud through Dropbox. It's not an all-in-one solution, but it should work.

MIQ will back up pics, contacts, notes, mms/sms, call log, and a few other things(but not apps)
Sprite Backup will back up the ENTIRE phone(apps included)
I was also looking for a solution like this...it's a shame google hasn't come out with a program to at least do this one task that iTunes does so easily for the iPhone.
To accomplish something similar I've rooted my phone and used Rom manager to make a nandroid backup.
I have heard a bit about sprite backup.... but doesn't that only work on 2.2.
I have a vibrant, so not quite at 2.2 yet.
Hey, this it's my first time posting and I had a question for you guys.
Does anyone here use Lookout Mobile Security?
I've seen a lot of screenshots of homescreens and I never see the Lookout icon on the notification bar.
Is it not needed or do you guys use
something different?
Thanks for your help!

That's a good question. I guess I just downloaded it assuming that I need it. Is the antivirus useless then?
Also, it backs up my pictures/contacts and has the "locate phone" feature. Are there any other apps that can do this?
Thanks

Not sure I need one either, but I have BitDefender Mobile on my phone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I used this thing for quite a while.....its great in theory. Here are the things that made me un-install it.
1) Could not locate my phone through GPS while indoors
2) website continuously said that message failed to be delivered to my phone while trying to make my device scream.....although I got every one of them and phone would not scream.
3) most importantly while doing batch updates from the market I would have to sit there and watch not only each app being downloaded and installed....but then had to wait for lookout to scan each one...which ultimately made the update process SLLLOOOOWWW.
I initially installed this just for the phone locator service but Wheres My Droid does that and it works great. IDK but maybe the paid version of Lookout is better but WAAAYYYY to expensive for a app that is technically NOT NEEDED.
I use WaveSecure... it does all the same stuff except virus protection. Everytime I've tested it, the lock has worked. I haven't tested the remote wipe feature. Also, I have it set so that once a day, it will backup all my pictures and sms and whatever else it offers backup for. That way, if I have to wipe it, I'll have all my stuff.
I used it for a while on my captivate. I stopped using it because when ever I had it installed the market would stall periodically. It would sit and say it was downloading something. Clearing the market didn't help, but uninstalling lookout would.
I use Google+ to auto upload my pictures, and SMS backup+ to back up SMS and call logs to my gmail account.
I never tried the locate, scream or wipe features so I don't miss them. I did notice WP7 included them built in, and worked well. Apple has integrated some now too. I think its only a matter of time before Google does the same.

Is there a way to make a backup of my Skyrocket and restore that to my new Note? The Skyrocket is still on 2.3.5 and the Note is on 2.3.6 if that matters. The goal is to transfer everything apps games settings etc all at once. I don't post often but I do a lot of lurking
Thanks for any help or suggestions. I'm sure this could help others who decide to try out the Note in the future.
Simple answer is no.
ahh well it was worth a shot anyway, I guess I'll just have to settle for transferring my contacts and texts and media. I'm off to google play to redownload all my apps lol.
I would say titanium backup is fine for regular apps just don't restore any system stuff. Most of my backups are from my OG SGS2 and no issues.

Contacts and media from Google and Play Music can easily restored to your GNote without any problems by just adding your GMAIL account. If you want to restore your texts, you can use an app SMS Backup & Restore. Thats what i use whenever i flash new roms.
Try mybackup root it should work I have changed devices many times and managed to restore everything

I managed to score a deal with Orange UK after I'd called to cancel my old contract with them (I'm with Three) and they offered me a FREE Galaxy S3 with 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 1.5GB of data for £23.56 (no idea where the 6p comes into it).
This is perfect for my GF, so I took them up on the offer and I'm giving her the phone and contract.
Now, she's been using my old HTC Desire through GiffGaff, of which we barely get a 2G signal around our house and where we live. Anyway, she's made three purchases on her Google account. Swiftkey, Battery Widget reborn and HD Widgets.
She used the Samsung keyboard on my phone a little to test it out (I use Swiftkey myself) and she quite liked that. The battery widget isn't any use for her on the GS3 since you can show the battery percentage next to the icon, but she'd like to keep HD Widgets.
We're giving the HTC Desire to my stepson as his first proper phone as well (he's 13) and the battery widget would be better on his phone and perhaps he could use the Swiftkey instead of my GF.
How do we go about keeping the purchases or moving them to another account? Is this possible?
Or, would it be possible to simply sign my GF into her Google account on her new phone as well as on the HTC Desire (so her account is present on both phones) and therefore both phones can use the apps?
The only tricky thing about that is the Google wallet and my stepson. I don't think he'd make purchases without asking but you just can't be sure!
Help!
You can have the same Google account on two different phones. Yes you can keep your purchases as long as you're logged into the same Google account. Moving app purchases between different accounts isn't possible as far as I know. As for keeping your son from making unnecessary app purchases, there's a setting in Google play that allows you to set a pin for downloading/purchasing apps
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Perfect. Yep just found that setting. "Require pin for user purchases".
That'll do nicely!
EDIT:
It might sound cheap, but can both phones use the same apps? Is there an install limit or something or is it a per account basis?

Nope never heard of an install limit. As long as your account is synced, you can use the same apps. BUT some paid apps are phone specific(purchased for the first phone and you might have to purchase a new license for the second phone). Best thing you can do is give it a test run- log both phones into your gfs Google account and see if you can restore paid apps in both phones. No harm in trying
Edit: I have to point out that your gfs contact data/gmail would be synced into the sons phone if you share the account. Even if you remove them from the sync settings, a 13yr old can always go into the settings and turn it back on

Sure you can use an app like titanium backup to freeze/uninstall it but the app is free on the market and can always be redownloaded. Even if you freeze the app, on the market there's an option to enable it(Just checked that myself)

That's fine. I doubt he'll try to use it.
I'm also checking online. According to Google, you can change your email address and transfer all your stuff over. I also never considered it but there'll be all my GF's contacts on there...
I think it may be a better idea to set up up his own gmail after all this! The widgets and stuff only cost a little anyway.
Yeah just setup his account and link it to your credit card so he can purchase apps with your permission.

Yeah, I guess that earlier. I think I'll just make him his own Google Account and put the pin lock on purchases and perhaps buy him the battery widget reborn thing (though Thomas H the dev was happy to move a donated purchase before, he might do it again?)

the best option would be to sign in, install all the apps you want, and then remove the account from the device. it'll mean no future updates but for a battery widget/swiftkey, i don't really think you'd need them anyway. if a major update does come in, you could just sign in again, install update, and then remove account a second time.
I read on Google Play that Sony had disabled Helium. Anyone know why?
I am looking for a backup and restore app that covers everything without the need to root the XZT. There is a built-in app that seems to have covered it but does it? I have just had to re-build my device and used the restore from the PC companion and it was awful. I've spent another day re-downloading and configuring settings and apps.
Is there an app that backs up and restores everything including the folders and icons on the home pages?
Thanks
