GS2 wont boot passed recovery - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Late last year i sold my GS2 to a guy at work. Rooted and with a custom ROM installed (Cognition V1.5.1 - yes i know its old but its not my phone )
I've attempted to install RC1 for CM9 this morning however, I'm falling at the first hurdle. I've booted into Clockwork recovery (4.0.0.2). The menu buttons work fine i.e, up/down and power as enter but when i select anything it goes to a black screen with the ROM Manager logo on it (the gog and the hat) - but no options.
Do i need to install a newer version of Clockwork on the device? If i do whats the best way to do it? Do i use ROM Manager to update it as i cant access any of the menus in recovery (other than the top menu)
I've not seen this problem before as normally people are kept in boot loops or cant get passed a splash screen.
EDIT - i've just managed to get the phone to boot and its now running as normal. I'm just concerned that if i go back into recovery i might not get it back up again.
Many thanks

You're pressing the wrong button lol... use the power button to confirm and the volume buttons to move up and down. The home button does nothing.

[Q] Booting into Recovery

ok i just got an atrix and im aa bit uncertain about booting into CWM. i know on other phones ive had, i had to boot up with volume down and power. i tried that and nothing works, boots up like normal. tried volume up and power to. my bootloader should be unlocked, the boot screen that says motorola dual core says unlocked in the corner. CWM is installed, i flashed gapps, cuz the person i got it from forgot to put them on. any idea on how i can fix this?
(Download Rom Manager & install the cwm from itif your cwm is not working?)
Power + volume down takes you to the options, there you need to scroll down (with volume down) and use volume up for choosing android recovery.

Strange.. Are you keeping volume down pressed until you would have seen the options, you're not letting go before that or so? Is the volume rocker still functioning ok?
Otherwise just try quick boot from the market.

im holding it in until i see the logo, and yes the rocker is working properly. and i know i can boot into recovery by other means while the phone is on but what if i get a bootloop. i wouldnt be able to fix it, unless i had a computer with me so i could use adb to enter recovery

Hold power and volume down, keep holding volume down until you see the word fastboot appear. Then press the volume down button (7 times I think), until you see android recovery, then press the volume up button.
That should do it!

I never see it say fastboot, it just says unlocked up in the corner. All the time, when I'm not even trying to boot to recovery. I'm assuming that means the bootloader iis unlocked. But I do exactly what you guys are saying and I never see fastboot or anything like that

Something must have gotten messed up when you flashed a rom.. I'd say try flashing a fruitcake and start from there.

Stuck Booting to Rom Manager Recovery

I'm the stock att rom on 2.3.4. I had my phone for a while but never backed up my ROM. I performed a permissions fix and rebooted. I selected backup ROM and it rebooted. The phone tried to reboot but got stuck trying to boot to recovery menu. I hit the volume button and got the Rom M. recovery menu. None of the options work. It just shows an icon and does nothing. If I hit the volume button it goes back to menu. I've tried to reboot several times and it keeps on booting to a non functional Rom Manager menu.
I'm done my searches and I'm no luck. Is there a way to recovery without completely wiping the phone? I'm hoping there's an easy way to recover the boot using Odin?
Here's exactly what I did in that situation .. take the battery out and leave it out for about 2 hours.. this will totally deplete your phone of any kind of power.. after your done put it back in and it should boot up perfectly! If not try to take it out for longer

Depending on which version of cwm you are booting into...what button are you using to select? Most of them its either power or the home button. Try the home button to select.

Thanks for the response but I don't see how this would fix the problem as it boots from internal storage and not the memory. I'll try it while I'm doing research and waiting for more responses.

Much Thanks!!!!! Karashta. Selecting the home bottom to select instead of the power is the proper way of selecting the menu's.
Thanks for making my day.

ClockworkMod recovery wont open.

So I decided to go ahead and root my player. Then I found this custom rom and followed their instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517194
It keeps on bootlooping my device, and even though installed steves kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377771
(which contains CWM) I cannot boot CWM recovery from boot.
It booted up a few times in CWM recovery, but now it doesnt want to. Since then ive tryed flashing steves kernal sveral times to see if I can get it to work. It hasn't.
I really just want to get my device back to stock, I have a stock rom but it still gets stuck in a bootloop.
Help!

FIXED
OK i managed to fix my own problem. I installed steves kernel, cleared the cash and the dalvik-cache. Then I flashed the stock rom and wiped all data(reset the factory settings) and then cleared the cashe.
Then my device booted up properly. :good:
Glad to hear you fixed it

You get into Clockwork mod by turning off the device. Then Hold power, Volume up, and the settings (the one to the left of the home button) at the same time. Sometimes you have to let go when the samsung logo appears and then hold it again

could you give more incorrect info, the CORRECT steps for entering CWM (or stock if not using a custom kernel) is to power device completely off, wait for the vibrate to indicate shutdown. Then press and hold volume up and the power button, once the samsung logo comes on release only the power button, do not release the volume up, continue holding volume up until CWM loads.

On my 4.0 US I don't hold the volume any longer than the power button to get into CWM--i.e., I let both go at the samsung logo, and it goes in.

That's how I always entered CWM or the stock one lol. It works for me. Also another way I did it was wait until the samsung logo appears and then hold power + volume up at the same time. I didn't let go of either the power button or volume up button, and just waited for it to come on.
Next time for a better result Go to a stock rom and Flash a kernel with odin. best way to Install CWM perfectly.
like Terra Silet, i have Gplayer 4 and Rooted This Kernel One Milion time

[Q] Galaxy Note(Rooted) stuck on boot screen after trying to boot into recovery mode

Hi. My galaxy note is getting stuck on boot screen.
To begin with I was using Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1 and had rooted my phone with CWM 6.0.3.1. Then I used it to flash CynogenMod 9.1. Then I used it to flash CM 10.2 . After this when I tried to reboot in recovery mode by pressing volume up+home+power, phone didn't go into recovery instead it just did a normal reboot. Then I enabled advanced reboot option by enabling developer developer setting and selected recovery option after pressing power button and selecting reboot. This time the phone restarted but neither went into recovery nor did a normal reboot. Instead it got stuck on galaxy note logo screen and that's the way it's till now.
It tries to reboot when I press either volume up+home+power or just power button but keeps getting stuck. It does go into download mode though when I press Volume down+home+power.
Someone please let me know what should I do to go back to safety. This is the first time I am trying to do any kind if rooting/flashing stuff.
Thanks.

OK, so this device we do not use HOME button to get recovery.
Volume up/down and power. Once vibrate , let go power and still hold volumes until recovery comes

I have the international version of note i.e GT-N7000 actually. I posted this issue here as I couldn't find correct forum at that time. Though have posted it to N7000 forum now @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44977074#post44977074
(I have discovered now that posting duplicate threads violates rules )
But anyways I am unable to boot into recovery even by pressing buttons mentioned by you. I am thinking of flashing Philz CWM6 kernal using ODIN through download mode and then flashing CM10.2(or CM10.1 if the problem lies with CM10.2).
I had flashed Philz CWM6 kernal before flashing with CM 9.1. But after CM 9.1 was flashed I think it replaced Philz touch recovery with its own recovery. After that I flashed CM 10.2 with this recovery. Now I don't know if CM10.2 is the problem or the recovery which overwrote Philz recovery
I hope I get an answer to what went wrong so as to be wiser when flashing a new ROM next time.

[Q] Stuck on CM Logo Loading! Can't go to recovery via button combo!

I installed CM10.1.3 with CyanogenMod Installer today. It was working fine but I had the APN issue and thought of flashing again.
So I downloaded the stable version from (http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=stable&device=i9100)
I could not boot via the combo even when the phone was working fine. I downloaded Goo Manager and rebooted from recovery from there and installed the downloaded CM10.1.3 from there! after that the phone is stuck at loading CM10.1.3 loading screen! No bootloop! Just endless loading!
What can I do? Please tell me! How to fix this?

When you plug your phone into your pc can you see the sd card and files whilst stuck in your 'non boot loop' ?
Why doesn't your 3 button combo work? - I had similar issue with my wifes phone recently and the other night to my surprise it worked all of a sudden, I just had to hold the buttons for far longer than I do on my own s2

Glad that I fixed CM! It's booting and working like a champ! but the recovery thing is still a paint! Boots to recovery easily from advanced reboot optioN!

I just press them all at the same time really - although, I have to say I really rarely use 3 button combo as I use 'quickboot' from google play which gives 3 shortcuts to instantly either: reboot, power off, or reboot into recovery.
As for your issue with the 3 button combo - more likely hardware related or (if you are anything like me) lack of patience lol
Having the same like you. When i hold the button combo the samsung logo comes up, phone turns off, again the samsung logo and then the recovery starts. You have to hold the button combo the whole time.
