Ok, totally nervous and anxious noob here. I had a question about the capabilities of the modem in this phone. My coworker has a captivate, and he told me all about the stuff you do here, and how he upgraded his modem to 4g. Is the vzw variant capable of the same? I've been reading the threads for a few weeks now, trying to figure out what to get, and now I'm just confused with the whole process, but that's a topic for another day.
Thanks.

Not. . . . . . . . . . . .
No.
The captivate can do HSPA which is all of the sudden be marketed as 4G (as HSPA+) but only up to the device limit of 7M.
That is one of ATT/TMO's ways of saying 4G.
VZN is using LTE which is different from their current CDMA#K which means phones can not take advantage of it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, no. The "4G" he is talking about is not really 4G. It's a fake 4G.
http://www.technobuffalo.com/comparisons/htc-inspire-4g-vs-htc-thunderbolt-4g-speed-test/
but wait......i thought if you put 4g icons in your theme....then it unlocked that super secret lte radio that came with the fascinate!?!?!
Thanks for the info.

So now you are discrediting VZW because they use a different technology than AT&T and bought a phone that is working as advertised?

Its not really 4G, the phone works fine and as intended. If you want 4g, then go get a 4g phone from verizon(who has the best 4g network at the moment, forget ATT's crap)

Hahahah, this. +1
HSPA and LTE are different tech, just like CDMA#k and HSPA. HSPA has the same speed capability as LTE but the drasticly different delivery mechanism makes it a loser for these kind of tests.
LTE is the true future tech even though it doesn't meet 4G guidelines. Future HSPA evolutions are just going to be like new and improved satellite TDMA systems.... larger pipe for more terminals... but dont ldt ths customer know how many terminals there are.

If I had my choice, I would've gone with AT&T for numerous reasons, but given my circumstance, VZW was my only option. Big Red has a track record of making things difficult for the end user (like upgrading phones). I love this phone, and the service is good, but it's a bit discouraging that I'll have to wait 2 years to get a faster phone when this one has capable hardware being held back by them.
Sorry for the rant. Basically, I'm anxiously awaiting the day when I can cut the bloat and let this thing fly. Keep up the awesome work, and I'll keep reading until I get all the pieces together.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The captivate doesn't do 4g..the guy just has a theme that changed his icon to show 4g when he still has 3g. And neither phone has the hardware to run 4g.
At&t has **** for service...hence the REAL reason iPhone is with vzw now. I will never pay for at&t again.
is there a way to unlock this phone so I can use it on t-mobile U.S.A.I dont think t-mobile is going to get this wounderful phone.there betting on the htc sensation for some reason with all their locked down bootloaders.a link to do it, information, anything would help.thanks brothers.dont have the phone yet.I will save this thread with any information.I just would like to be ready from day one of have the phone.

wait a minute. the SGS2 is being sold unlocked already from most places. so if you buy one it will just work on tmobile USA, just pop in your sim and go. however the SGS2 will not support tmobile USA 3G so you will only be stuck on EDGE/2G. nothing can change that.

no that wont work either unless the phone is specifically made for tmobile usa 3g bands. when the USA versions come out, they are already confirmed for ATT, verizon, etc, but no tmobile. none of those versions will work on tmobile.
this has alreayd been covered, and the only choice you have is the samsung Hercules coming in place of the SGS2 to tmobile.

The i777 doesn't have the bands for Simple Mobile's 3g. I'm pretty sure you'll just be stuck with EDGE.

Are they a T-Mobile reseller or AT&T reseller? If TMo, no 3G for you.

So you think you should be able to trick the network into thinking you have hardware that you don't? For what purpose? I mean you still wouldn't have the physical hardware required.

dude, you are trying to figure out a way to trick the network into seeing something THE PHONE DOESNT HAVE, which is HARDWARE to support the frequencies...
so lets throw some logic in this shall we?
EVEN if you could trick the network into thinking you had the hardware, your HARDWARE wouldnt be able to utilize the network speeds......so what would the purpose be?

What? Simple Mobile is a T Mobile virtual network operator reseller. They are in no way affiliated with AT&T or do they support AT&T frequencies. No wonder you're trying to "trick" the network into thinking its a different phone.

I'm just asking a question if it's possible to get 3G speeds. I'm new to the forums and still learning the aspects of my phone and the network. Too harsh..but thanks anyways.
It wasn't just a question, it was a seriously stupid question. Like asking if there's a pair of glasses you can wear that will make a Prius look like a Corvette. Sorry, but it just isn't possible. You can't spoof the network into thinking your phone has hardware it doesn't. Are you getting that yet?

If you're planning on using Simple Mobile, then you don't want the GT-I9300 or the SGH-I747. You want the SGH-T999. You'll be stuck with a combination of EDGE and/or no data service if you put an I9300 or I747 on Simple Mobile. An unlocked T999 would be your best bet. The T999 is already configured to access Simple Mobile's 3G/4G network. The I9300 and I747 are not. Hop on over to the T999 forum and check on some prices.

A dumb question. If I decide to get GT-I9300 mean I can't get 3G/4G speed with Simple mobile service right?
When I look at the SGH-t999 spec indicate "No" 4G LTE and have Adreno 225 GPU rather than Mali-400MP.
I felt that GT-I9300 is slight better. So is there a way to get around it?

The T999 is capable of 4G HSPA+, not 4G LTE. As for the T999's GPU, the Snapdragon S4 has more than enough kick to give you what you're after. Plus, you'll be getting an extra GB of RAM and 4G data. If Simple Mobile is what you want, get the T999... that's what the T999 was designed for.
On the other hand, you could get the I9300, which is slightly faster. However, you'll be stuck with half the RAM and 2G EDGE data only. The I9300 was designed with standard global GSM/HSPA+ networks in mind (like AT&T's); not AWS GSM/HSPA+ networks (like Simple Mobile's).
It's a square peg/round hole situation. The T999 is the peg you need... and it doesn't even have to be unlocked to work on Simple Mobile.

Yes, you're wrong again. The I9300 supports 2100MHz. However, T-Mobile's/Simple Mobile's 3G/4G network doesn't use 2100MHz; it uses 1700/2100MHz AWS. It's a huuuge difference!
You want the T999; not the I9300. If you want to use another carrier, then maybe the I9300 would be appropriate... but not on Simple Mobile.

This screenshots were sent from a friend that says that his cellphone is receiving 4G, however i also have the same GT-i9300 factory unlocked, but bought from the US. His S3 is bought from Orange Dominicana Carrier. We both are in the same network. But i only receive H+, while he receives 4G. Does this mean that there are GT-i9300 with LTE? Or mine is not configured properly?
IMPOSSIBRU!!!!
On a serious note, I was sent a text from T-Mobile uk saying that later this year I would be able to get 4G
Here's hoping

Edit: unfortunately after having restored a nandroid backup, I have lost the text, doesn't seem like i have a great deal of credibility now oh well
