How do you flash a zip file? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

How do you flash a zip file, say something from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27717297
that requires me to flash it, i've already downlaoded and put the folder into the downloads folder on my sd card and have also downloaded rom manager, what next?

Have you rooted and unlocked the bootloader of your phone and installed CWM recovery?
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium

you require a unlocked bootloader and a working clockworkmod recovery (you can use doomlords his recovery)
when your phone boots, press the volume up button and you'll enter recovery
press the install zip from sd card option and select the zip
simply press 'install it!' and you're done

Turn your fone off. Turn it back on and the bottom bar should light up and the led when the sony logo is on. When it does press volume up a good few times and it'll boot into recovery. In there chose flash zip file from sd option
Sent from my Xperia S on which The Kernel has been installed but he bought no chicken.....

you first need to flash dooms kernel trough fastboot
you cant flash his kernel trough recovery because you simply dont have a recovery to flashbit with
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app

does anyone have the link to which doom kernal? And also where exacttly should i put it in the phone directory so that it will detect it when I press volume up.

You really are a bit of a noob, you need to flash dooms kernel trough fastboot, there is a thread for this stuff

I don't have my computer now and want to update miui tonight. Is the steps of using this app
1. Select recovery image
2. Chose the new rom
3. Wipe dalvik and cache
4. Hit ok
Is there anything else that is needed to do? I can't afford to mess up my phone since I don't have my computer now. Any help would be very helpful. Thanks.

You dont need a PC if you are s-off.You are on hboot 1.50 I think
In another thread joeykrim (developer of Flash Image GUI) told that there should not be any problem untill a rom and kernel mismatches.
So i think you are good to go with that app.
But imo the steps are:
Run Flash img GUI
Choose kernel
then tap browse and selecet the zip file of miui rom
It should give a message to make sure it is a valid rom zip as the file size is much more.
Then tap flash image . the app will flash the boot.img from the romzip file.
Then it will ask to reboot.
But i think you should not reboot the phone as you are flashing a aosp kernel.
You should power off the phone.
Then boot into bootloader >Go to recovery > Then install the miui rom zip file from recovery.
Hope this helps......
Dont forget to thanks if I helped you.....

As far as I know, support was added for selecting the kernel image from the ROM zip itself. So select the image, wipe dalvik and cache, ok, reboot and flash the ROM.
So select kernel image in the app. Pick the miui and wipe dalvik and cache then hit yes and that's it? I'm alittle confused cause I don't want to f it up. Don't choose recovery image to do it choose kernel?

Yes exactly......choose kernel image in app not recovery.......then choose miui rom's zip file > then boot in bootloader > go to recovery > install zip from sd card > choose from sd card > then select the same zip that you have chosen in the app (miui rom.zip) . If you choose recoverey and then selct miui rom .zip you may really f it up
If something goes wrong then you will need a pc to solve the issue......

are you able to boot into bootloader? you need to uncheck fastboot from settings>power or you can turn off the phone and remove and reinsert the battery then hold volume down+power button.
If recovery is not working try to flash a zip file containg a workig recovery with flash image gui.

I downloaded the recovery from the website I got the app from and flashed it through the app and it said successful. When I boot into recovery the htc logo comes up and after a minute it just reboots. Do you have a better link for me for recovery?

The only Recovery that worked for me is in the attachment.
It contains the recovery that i use. Extract the file using any file explorer then you will have a cwm.img . I dont know if you can flash a .img file with Flash image GUI. And dont forget to select recovery image option in the app while flashing this.
I've been trying to get into recovery and It won't work. I followed all of your guys suggestions and still nothing. I downloaded the cwm file from the website and selected it and it said successful but when I try to restart and boot into recovery it stays on the htc screen for a second then vibrates and then just restarts. Anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?

Many thanks.

Well if you're getting the bootloop then I'm guessing it's not possible. Because while it's rebooting, you're holding down right?
If so, then I guess that answers our question. It's not possible.
Need to go into bootloader the normal way using a computer.
So I'm assuming that this app is really only for flashing kernels. I tried that and it worked perfectly.

Hey thats not true.....I was on olymus ROM and i wanted to switch to infected ROM but i wasn not having PC but my recovery was working . I used Flash image GUI > kernel image> Selected the infected ROM> And it flashed the boot.img from infected ROM .zip
Then I rebooted in bootloader > selected recovery > install zip from sd card> and chose the same infected rom.zip......................and everything worked fine.
@arozer
If you want to restore your backed up MIUI then I think you will need to flash the boot.img from your backup 1st using flash image GUI. Then without rebooting phone , you have to boot into recovery then restore the backup.
@peecs121
I guess you will need a computer to get your recovery working using fastboot.
Maybe you should do that on your friends PC .
Then try the steps.
I will download the latest MIUI and will try to install it without a PC for you.

hey I downloaded the MIUI ROM and flashed it successfully without using PC.
For you I also tried Flashing different recovery through Flash Image GUI which also worked.
Here's what I did:
1.copied the " MIUI.us_shooter_1.12.2_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed_scott951.zip "(97 mb size) and recovery.img to root of SD card
2.In Flash Image GUI , I selected recovery image option and flashed the recovery.img by using flash image button ( also checked wipe dalvik & wipe cache) Then it prompted to reboot and i tapped no
3.Then i selected kernel image in Flash Image GUI and Selected the "MIUI.us_shooter_1.12.2_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed_scott951.zip" and flashed it aslo using flashimage button( also checked wipe dalvik & wipe cache)Then it prompted to reboot and i tapped no.
4.Then i switched off my phone manually.
5.Then i booted into bootloader by pressing volume down+power button..
6.selected Recovery and pressed power button and recovery booted successfully.
7.In wipe menu i selected wipe cache , wipe everything ,dalvik etc
8.Then pressed go back and selected flash zip from sd card and select Synergy_3Dvo_Superwipe.zip
9.Then again flash zip from sd card and select Synergy_Format_Data_EXT4_Optimized.zip.
10.Then again flash image from sd card and select MIUI.us_shooter_1.12.2_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed_scott951.zip.
11.Finally reboot the phone and voila!! got it to workwithout PC.
You could flash any other rom instead of MIUI.
And i wanna ask you have you even unlocked and rooted your phone?
Here are the files you will need:
The recovery.img is here http://www.mediafire.com/?n72emuv5a1c00sd
Thank you so much man for those steps!!! It worked perfect!!!!

Oops!! Sorry
I wanted to say that after flashing boot.img you should not "normal reboot" the phone.
You should power it off and boot in bootloader > recovery..
Sorry for the mistake
Which version of which recovery do you use.....???
The CWM 4.0.1.4 recovery by revolutionary (which i was using till today) made ".img's" in nandroid backup. I dont know about your recovery.
If you had not changed your kernel while you were using MIUI
You should do one thing:
1.Instead of searching boot.img in nandroid backup, just use the boot.img from the miui rom's zip file you downloaded and flash it via FLASH IMAGE GUI and follow the above steps by me from step 3 (if your recovery does not work, follow steps from no 1). You will be good to go.

No files found.

I recently tried to install android revolution hd 2.2.0 and ran super wipe.I have put the rom on the sdcard too,so it isn't anymore and the normal bootup doesn't work,I am stuck in recovery and need a way to put that rom there to flash it..does the window explorer work in recovery mode?

If you have the stock Rom flash it via Odin.
Cwm sometimes mounts the external sd card but sometimes doesn't.. don't know how it is for others but it isn't working properly for me.
Go to mount and storage in Cwm for mounting sdcard.

I removed the battery because it was not charging and I thought I won't can flash any rom with the battery low,so I will seek more advices before turning it back on,so..
Wipe removed all my files, including stock rom,but I don't know if volume down + power + home button will work.Well I went into choose zip from sdcard and they all were there,I ran super wipe as it was said in the flash tutorial and it deleted almost everything,I am stuck into recovery and I cannot enter sdcard because there are no files anymore, such as the rom needed to be flashed.
If I mount sdcard n the mount and storage in cwm will windows explorer be able to put the rom back there? So i can flash it with.
update: volume down+home+power works perfectly, should I flash the rom with odin directly? the sdcard is empty too.

I will flash stock rom then I will try again to do android revolution hd 2.2.0 ( the step I missed is about creating a virtual ssd )
I will come with an update if the flash stock rom through odin works.
Checkrom comes in two versions, one is Odin flashable, flash that.then u are rooted after flashing
Next time u use superwipe remember to move the rom to EXTERNAL SD-card ,because internal SD-card is wiped.
Weird..odin exits after a while it says Please wait then it quits, while trying to flash stock rom, what's the problem?
I found a way to put the rom back there, but it is in sdcard, and I cannot enter it ( cannot mount )
How can I solve this from the recovery mode? I am still stuck in recovery mode or download mode..and the rom is on the card now,but cannot access to flash it with cwm
Why do not you just boot?
Previous rom is there but wiped and restored.
I do not think that superwipe was made to empty system from the rom.

The rom had to be put on a virtual/external sdcard, but because I didn't read carefully I put it on sdcard aslong with superwipe,so after I launched superwipe it deleted the sdcard files and the stock OS too,so it just says samsung galaxy siii like before it boots, but it stays that way..
I don't know how to get into the sdcard, cwm recovery says it cannot mount it,sdcard contains my rom,and because I cannot access it,I cannot flash it..I need a way to help cwm to mount sdcard,so I can flash it from there..
Otherwise I tried flashing stock rom but odin crashes, like I press start, then it says check md5 then Please wait,it gets stuck and quits..

A rom can't be flashed by a noob

Right, I have a rooted Xperia Sola and I want to flash the eXperience ROM, and I don't know how to do that.
The problem is that I can't understand most of the instructions of flashing the ROM, so you guys can help me, please?
Ok, here it goes...
Flash any Stock .54 FTF (use flashtool). Ok, got it...
Let it boot properly. Ok, got it...
Download eXperience.zip and transfer to internal memory. Right.
Flash boot.img from Munjenis v5 CWM kernel.zip (use flashtool). Ok, I can do that...
Now boot to CWM recovery. CWM? WTF?
Flash the eXperience.zip via CWM. What?
You will be entered in AROMA Uh?
Now follow the instructions(Select your device carefully.) select the apps you want to install and remove. Ok.
Again boot to CWM recovery. DAMN CWM...
Do a wipe data/factory reset. What the hell is that?
Wipe Dalvik Cache I don't know...
Turn the phone on and wait for POWER OFF button, when it appears hit the button.Ok.

CWM stands for Clockwork Mod recovery. You need a recovery installed to install any roms or mods....
CWM is a recovery where you could perform several operations like accessing the system files, system partitions etc, for us and as of now it is needed to install custom ROMs.
So as the first step says, you need to flash .54 version of ICS (ftf file) by flashmode (volume down key and plug in USB at the same time, led will light up green) you need to install flashtools (flashing is done by flash tools) in your pc first
Then there is kernel, that is basically the bridge or interface between the phones hardware and ROM, kernel decides the hardware limits and accessibility to the ROM,
In order to replace stock sony kernels you need an unlocked boot loader (boot loader is locked default by Sony) there are few steps to unlock the boot loader, once you do that you can flash custom kernels (kernel files are like "boot.img" .elf files etc)
To flash them you need to enter fast boot mode ( volume up key and plug in USB, led will light up blue) or there will be flash able zip version which can be flashed by CWM (again recovery, which can be accessed by repeated pressing of volume down at the booting Sony logo), custom kernels have pre installed CWM.
After kernal that is boot.img switch on, on Sony logo press repeatedly volume down lets you enter CWM, you have to perform some wipes, that is data (factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache) after that choose "install zip from SD card" install the ROM.zip file, (assuming you have already put the ROM.zip in your sdcard, ROM = name of the ROM here it is experiencev2) you are done after the installation is complete, reboot and you enter AROMA, its an installer again, follow on screen instructions.
And you have that ROM.

Reading helps a lot rather than asking questions.
What i meant, if u read the guides you will get the answers more quickly.

Do I really need SD Card for flashing a custom ROM?

Hi,
better to get one do', not expensive and useful loll or buy an xperia P then u don t need an sd card...
When u gonna flash there will be an option select zip from sd card in CWM; or u flash rom with flashtool with the ftf file of your rom, its up to you, or its gonna be actually up to the file you gonna download.

Do I really need SD Card for flashing a custom ROM?

Yeah, the ROM.zip file to flash has to be either in the media internal storage or SD card (copy it before flashing the kernel) only then CWM recovery can access the package for installation.

I've asked in the ROM's thread and they say that an external SD card is not needed. I don't know what to do now...

Once again mate, what you want is to flash a custom ROM.
download the ROM, it may consist of the kernel file “boot.img” inside the ROM.zip or separate links would be there for the kernel.
[These custom kernels have CWM preinstalled]
so here it goes
1. could be as you said, flash .54 ICS firmware, hope you know that.
2. Switch on the device, let it boot. Copy the ROM.zip file in the SD card or internal storage.
3. Switch off, enter fastboot mode (assuming you have an unlocked bootloader)
3. Download the above said kernel, if its in boot.img, use flashtools in fastboot mode (fastboot mode>select kernel to flash) to flash the kernel (so after kernel flashing you have the kernel installed with CWM in it)
4. Switch on, on seeing sony logo, repeatedly press the volume down key, you enter CWM.
5. Perform wipes (for clearing or deleting user data /cache to make it a clean install)
-wipe data
-wipe cache
-advanced>wipe dalvikcache
6. Now on the main menu find “install zip file” access the location where you have stored the ROM.zip file, whether in internal storage or external SD card.
7. Click install, done !
8. Again wipe data and wipe cache
9. Reboot, let it boot
you have new ROM.
try reading more tutorials in the general section if this didnt help you.

Lmao you re right!
Manudo you really need to read some more tutorials before flashing if you don t understand what you doing that gonna become dangerous for your mobile...
and actually hope you know that the bootloader once unlocked void your warranty... don t mess it up with flashes, read a week more then flash a custom rom!
Anyways we are here if something goes wrong
Sorry for being a noob, but I understand, finally...
The boot.ini file is always at the root directory of the zip file, right?

Nope that boot.img or kernel.elf or kernel.sin has to be at the root of the sd card that means in no any folders u drag it n drop it directly on the name of
the drive in windows. Then u flash but before doing it u have to put the rom.zip at the sd card root too...
Got it?

Yeah, but... The CWM part, I read that it's necessary to have the unlocked bootloader to flash the CWM Kernel, I tried but flashtool gave me an error that says that I don't have root access. At the beginning the log says "Root Access Allowed", I can't understand...
Thank you in advance.

Ok
Kernel and cwm its two different things clockwork recovery mode its like a small soft that gonna be useful for you to set up the kernel. The first thing to load on the mobile its the bootloader then kernel then firmware (rom)
A rom that u gonna flash HAS to be compatible with kernel u want to flash
If you want to get your rom rooted i don t think (unless theres a way to do it on ure phone) you can do it with flashtool most of the time you have to downgrade to an older version of your rom cuz root is voluntary blocked by sony to deny u access to it but developpers found weakness in systems but it takes time and sony by updating systems find those weaknesses and fix it.
Then i m not sure u have to get unlocked bootloader to enter flash mode but once again to do it void warranty and to unlock it permit u to flash a custom kernel
So at the end....what u wanted to do? Flash a custom rom?
then if its yes
FIRST OF ALL You unlock bootloader, then put a custom kernel, then a custom rom and for this u look below mrmbk told u how to do it

Right, I have to unlock it...
But, I have that fear to brick the phone, you know?

How to flash cm 10.1

I've got my boot loader unlocked. I'm rooted on v10g. I have cwm and I was wondering if I could just flash the zip file with cwm.
I think you have to make sure you have the right recovery to flash with. If I'm not mistaken I did flash with the cmw for locked bootloaders but to be safe I'll say to find the right one that is for unlocked bootloaders. I'm using CMW touch for unlocked bootloaders. Make sure you do a factory reset. It might not be necessary but I run a factory reset, I wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing a ROM. Also, make sure you backup your stock ROM before flashing another.

Is there anywhere I can get the files for cwm touch? I wasn't able to install that when I unlocked my bootloader. Thanks for the reply.

Here is the recovery file, just install it using fastboot as cmahendra describes in his awesome guide
Everytime I issue the unlock command to try and get in fastboot mode it just restarts my phone.

Oh, I didn't know you had a P769.
Look at the bottom most paragraph of the first post of this guide by carloswii5.
He explains it very nicely.
So to get this straight. I download the recovery image & put that on the root of the sd card. Then flash it. Then I'll boot to recovery & flash cm 10.1

Yes, exactly, but use the "Nandroid Manager ROOT" to flash recovery and then do a full wipe + format system before flashing CM10.1
You can of course then flash Gapps as well.

If you want to install the cm10 rom the optimus L9 has as of right now you
have to do the following
1) Go to the app store and search for the app called "Nandroid Manager ROOT"
download the app and open it then go to flash recovery you must first put the recovery from the downloaded file to the
root of you external sd card and then go to the app and search for the recovery and flash it.
After you flash it you will have a recovery on your phone
(just to let you know it will be mirrored) but to boot to recovery you must turn off the phone
and then hold the "Volume UP + Home Button + Power Button"
now go download the cm10 rom from here " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2216542 " put the file to the root of your sd card and then reboot to recovery and then to flash you will need to "wipe system, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache then flash" after you flash the zip reboot and you will have CM10 Hope This helped
