Mhl problems. Screen size - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an s3 with a Mhl adapter. Works good for the most part.
However the screen is too big on my tv. Overscan I think it's called where the edges or the screen sure cut off. Any way to fix this? Also when I play ANY video it shows it full screen on tv. Even If it's in a window on phone. I want it widowed until I full screen it.
Can I fix these issues?

HDMI Mirroring/Webtop Mod Problem? Everything has a tint of blue

So got my Atrix on thursday, rooted/deodexed/Greyblur'ed yesterday and now I'm trying out the Webtop mod and mirroring for the first time since. I dunno if it's because im using my 22 inch monitor or something but there's a strong tint of blue using either of them. I've googled/searched around and it seems like im the only dude around here with this prob. Ill post some pics up in a bit.

I have replicated this using component cables from my pc to my TV and when one of the 3 colors (red, blue, green)RCA are not seated properly you dont get the full color spectrum. Might be a bad Mini HDMI to HDMI cable. Could be a bad pin on the connector on the phone as well. If possible try a different cable or gently brush out any dust or junk in the slot on the phone, monitor or cable. Seems like its not sending all the colors properly through the cable. Try the entertainment center as well and see if that produces the odd color as well. The patch to make the entertainment center work instead of mirroring is in the thread--- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991595

I'm interested in the exact same feature. Seems wasteful to have two displays running.
I have done extensive reading on this tonight and thus far are unable to find a method that will turn the Atrix display off, while connected by HDMI. There was one interesting thread for the Xoom that will turn the display OFF, while leaving the HDMI ON. Also, references to video players that recognize when hdmi is connected and turning the phone display off. Nothing that I have found that will function on the Atrix. Other member ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

[Q] My new PC... the S3!! MHL HDMI Resolution

Hey guys and gals,
Although I've been lurking on these forums for a few weeks I've finally decided to join and ask some questions.
I've completed my S3 PC, got a nice monitor with HDMI input, bluetooth keyboard and mouse and of course the MHL adapter. Everything works great.. time to get rid of the ageing PC in my office.
I have a question though, I've connected the S3 to my TV and the new monitor and I never get a 1080p connection.. it's always 1080i
Is there any way to force 1080p as I do get a slight flicker with 1080i
I'm totally amazed at what the S3 can do! BTW I was a total apple fanboy until I got my S3 a few weeks ago.
Cheers in advance... and yes I searched
so nobody else is having this issue?? I was really hoping to get some help here Anyone??
Sure your monitor supports 1080p? What hz does it run when using 1080i?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
It doest output 1080p via hdmi just 1080i iv tested on all my tv sets and there are all top line and display tbe same i dont get any flicker tho are you using a good hdmi cable?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
thanks for confirming snowwhite007... I honestly thought it was able to output 1080p. I guess the slight flicker is due to the monitor then.
Flickering may also be due to the phone's HDMI chip. I'm not sure if it's clock source and other components are stable enough for a clean transmission of 31'104'000 (31,1million) pixels per second (1920 width*1080 height*30 images/second / 2 (interleaved) )
1080i and 1080p have the same native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels with the only difference being that "i" (interlaced) paints odd lines before even in 2 'ticks' while "p" (progressive) paints in one go from top to bottom.
So if there is any flickering it SHOULD only be every other line, can you confirm that?
Hi, i've got a question, can anyone give me a tip which keyboard and mouse works best with the s3?
I want to do exactly what you did. I want to use my phone as a pc.
So any Idea?
I bought a cheap bluetooth keyboard an mouse from Deal Extreme worka great
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Might sound like a silly thing, but just check your power saving isn't enabled, found that while it is enabled stuff like 1080 vids played really badly. That and what type of hdmi cable you are using could be factors.
I went on hols for two weeks and just took my S3 and a portable hard drive with hdmi and usb adapters and cables and used the hotels 1080p tvs as a full desktop, ubuntu and all
I am pretty positive that everytime I have used the hdmi it has been at 1080p. My guess is maybe a tv error unless it has run 1080p before?
EDIT: Oooh, just had another thought, what exact hdmi adapter did you use? Link included if that's not against forum rules? Know when I got mine I had to wade thru a lot of close immitations that don't display properly as they are cheap fakes sold as the real thing, one would only display 720p
can you tellme the model of bluetooth keyboard and mouse? i wanna do the same

I bought a generic mini bluetooth keyboard from amazon marketplace, it's not the bees knees but its about the size of the phone, bluetooth, rechargeable and only £10.
Works great for using the terminal or typing complex passwords etc when traveling or using as a desktop.
Also used the microsoft notebook bluetooth mouse 5000, got that cheap through amazon marketplace too.
Neither come with bluetooth adapters though so would need to by one seperately if ever using with a pc that doesn't have built in bluetooth.
1080i
Hi
I recently purchased MHL adapter from this website
http://www.clove.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-s3-mhlhdmi-adaptor
And I have same problem as you. My TV only gets 1080i not 1080p.
However I don't get flickering, I just see that there is not enough vertical pixels (visible difference)
Tried bunch of different hdmi cables (cables that work with various 1080p devices with no issues whatsoever) and I always get 1080i.
Even when I try to playback video which is 1080p.
I'll try later if there is any difference if I plug it in through AMP (onkyo) and not the tv and let you know if there is any difference.
Cheers

What are some options to hook the phone to a TV.? HDMI RCA ...???
Hdmi mhl adapter. Make sure it's one with a power source made for note 2 or sgs3.
I have the official Samsung Smart Dock and a HDMI cable. I just put the phone on the dock and connect the HDMI from the dock to the TV and get instant display

Well, I got it for 75 dollars but it was originally 100. I'd say if you use the phone for multi-media purposes (watch movies on standard TV), then get it. But I wouldn't just buy if you want to dock/charge it and nothing else. Personally, I use my dock to make my Note 2 a giant PC. I connect my mouse and keyboard to the USB slots on the dock and connect the dock to the TV so I can browse the internet and what not on a bigger screen. That to me is worth the money. You should get it! It does a lot!

Ah yes. That is exactly what i'd be doing is a pc like setup. I had a similar setup back in the early bionic days but that phone just didn't have the hardware to double as a desktop. Thinking the n2 will bring what it was missing. Appreciate the feedback!

You don't need a setting, you just plug it in/hook it up and after selecting the correct input on the TV it works automatically.
I have a little problem. I wonder if I can get some help. When my phone is connected to the dock the edges Getty cut off from ask sides. I have changed the ratio of my tv but nothing happens. Any work around to bet the screen to fit perfectly?

I have a setting on my TV that changes the mode to PC or TV, check and see if your TV has that. It fixes my issues with the screen being cut off.

If you want to try to get it for $50, let me know. I'm not promising anything, but I think you should be able to get it as well.

I have been using the MHL adapter that was purchased directly from Samsung for the Note 2. Oddly enough, since day 1 of me owning it, I have had the edges of the screen cut off from the display. I've checked every setting on my tv and nothing has fixed it.
Now here's the interesting part, every other phone I have tried to troubleshoot this issue with, (two sgs3's, an sgs4, I haven't found another note 2 to try it with) has worked perfectly, without changing any TV settings, and without the edges being cut off. So with that being said, I've been trying to figure out why my Note 2 is the only one that has this problem, to no avail.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I wouldn't know why only the note ii is doing that. With my note ii on different monitors or tvs (either) there is definitely variation in display. Some tvs you can't change the scan settings and will be stuck with the picture as is ( as far as I know-probably worth researching). Some you can change the setting and your all good or some monitors will display the whole image properly. Thats just my experience. I too would be Iinclined to have a more technical explination... i just havent sought one yet.
i have pc settings but since i dont have anything connected there i cant change them. i have tried it in 3 different tvs and played with the settings but nothing seems to work. i got to admit. its no big deal but in really bothers me for some reason. especially when it comes to the multi window tab...
Or you can get the chromcast

Note 3 + Samsung smart dock = very low resolution

Hi everyone,
I just got the Note 3 and am absolutely loving it so far. I also own a Samsung Smart Dock that I used with my previous phone, a Note 2.
When I dock the Note 3, it very nicely detects mouse and keyboard and sends the display to the monitor I have attached to the smartdock. The only problem is that the resolution on the monitor seems very very low and very grainy.
Any suggestions / thoughts / hints would be greatly appreciated
With your note 2 the picture was same?

I'll see about taking a pic, but initial thoughts are:
-On my monitor, I have an 1 inch area above and below the image from the Note 3.
-My monitor reports the incoming signal as being 480p
-My monitor refuses to auto adjust
To try and describe the "grainy-ness" a bit further: Any letter, for example an S (caps), that is rounded will appear with visibly pixelated curves. It is as if the resolution is very low, which would seem to correspond with my monitor reporting the signal as 480p.
What resolution does your monitor use with your Note 3?

When I output to a monitor using the MHL cable or one of the Samsung MHL to HDMI adapters it is full 1080p. 480p I can well imagine will not look too great. It's not a matter of your monitor not adjusting, if the N3 is outputting at that resolution then that is what the monitor will display. Typically the N3 will output whatever the device it's connected to will support so that implies your docking station is the problem. Either that or the input to the monitor is telling the dock that it can only support 480p but that's highly unlikely with any modern monitor.
To help you further, what is the model of the docking station and the monitor you are using and how are you connecting the dock to the monitor (HDMI, DVI, HD15, S-Video etc.)

Thanks, that's very helpful
The monitor is a Dell S2340Mc and the dock is a Samsung Multimedia dock. The monitor works great with both my PC's.
I use a 3rd party HDMI <-> DVI cable to connect the dock to the monitor. (I'm wondering if it's a cable issue?)
I have tested this in 2 configurations:
1: Dock connected to monitor via a KVM switch: Monitor reports 480p
2: Dock connected directly to monitor: Monitor reports 480p
Probably a cable or adapter issue. The hdmi-dvi is probably the weak link. Anyway for you test using HDMI straight up?

Yes. Try and eliminate what could be causing it. If it's physical you can replace it. If it's software then you gotta figure that out.

My Smart Dock is outputting 1080p to my TV.
I have a friend who had problems outputting to his monitor, but that was because his monitor would not accept 1080p at 30Hz which is what the Smart Dock outputs video at, and it dropped the resolution due to this.
Hi people, if you ever want to hook up an HDMI 4 port KVM switch to your Samsung Smart Dock, here is a demo on how to do so:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pBSeNlMmeQ
The Multimedia Smartdock from the Note 2 has a standard output of 720p type resolutions (up to 1280x800) as this is the maximum resolution of the S3 / Note 2. The Note 3 scales output back to 720p in order to be shown on this hence why it is blurry as hell. It is very distinct difference when you compare the Dock output to a Miracast/WIDI output using a dongle - that really does 1080p (with lag) but it is so much crisper and clearer than the dock.

Both. It is roughly about half a second delay between the input/display that makes it a bit irritating. The best way to get around this is to cover the screen of the phone and just concentrate on the big monitor instead. Otherwise you will notice the difference between the two. The only machine that I know of that doesnt have this type of delay is the NVidia shield - There is a function that minimises the delay and works pretty well. Wish this was an option on the Note 3 as well.

Nintendo and nvidia have worked on stuff like this because it's a necessity for latency tolerance. It needs to trickle down already. Big reason I haven't invested in much wireless display stuff. I still live by the cable.
