Alright, so here's my problem:
I just upgraded to the Galaxy S III yesterday, and today decided to try to 'root' the device. So I found the Toolkit here on XDA (from here), and went through the initial steps without any issues (driver installation, device recognition, etc..).
I then went to the 'rooting option' menu, where I selected the first--and most basic --option, which was to only install Super User, and the push the permissions.
I was following the automated guide, opened Odin, selected the correct file, 'boot-insecure-i9300xxale8-gsm.tar', and made sure only 'auto-restart' and F.reset time' were checked, and clicked 'start'. The flash appeared to have gone well, but when it tried to restart, the phone never rebooted. I attempted to reboot into download mode (Vol. Down + Home + Power), but the device was unresponsive. I then browsed around the forums a bit looking for other methods, including taking the battery out for several minutes, then putting it back in whilst holding down the 'download mode' button combination, and other various variations of that method; yet again, none prevailed.
The device gives no indicator lights when plugged in, no light up when the power button is held down, and is overall seemingly unresponsive. However, when I hold down the 'home' button alone - after about 30 seconds - a green vertical battery appears on the screen, with a little white loading indicator on it, but vanishes after about 5 seconds or so, and the device becomes unresponsive once more.
The device is not being recognized by my computer whatsoever, no beeps or anything when plugged in.
Any ideas as to what I can do?
EDIT: I have been able to get into 'Download mode' somehow, but after trying to reflash the stock rom, it went back to the 'Unresponsive' mode. I have it in Download mode again currently, so what do I do from here?
I assume it is still under warranty, since it is less than a few days old. Return it to the store claiming hardware malfunctioning.
Forget about the toolkit. In my opinion, it's quite useless (as you know by now), and it tends to automate tasks that are simple by nature.
Even although I appreciate the effort the developers of the toolkit put into it, I would never do it, since I want to have control of the entire process: I want to know exactly what is being done and why, and that is something the Toolkit won't give me.
If you want to root your phone and keep it stock, do this:
- Install the drivers for the device.
- Install SiyahKernel for S3 version 1.3 using ODIN.
- Install superSU (from market) and let it update it's binary su
- Install MobileOdin (free version)
- download the latest Samsung ROM (such as DBT [Germany] or ITV [Italy]) using CheckFus downloader
- copy the downloaded and unzipped ROM to your phone's external SD card (just the .md5 file)
- using MobileODIN, flash the ROM and select the "EverRoot" feature
- after reboot the ROM will be updated, stock, but with root
- Install TriangleAway to get rid of any annoying triangles and to reset the binary counter
Done. supposing the ROM is already downloaded, the entire process takes exactly 4 minutes.

I have the phone in download mode right now though, as I've been able to get that far. Is there anything I can do from here to fix the issue? I really don't want to take it back up, and face the chance of confrontation if they decided to call me out on the issue.
I tried flashing the Sinyah Kernel via Odin just now, using the PDA mode, but once again, just flashes the Samsung logo for a brief second, and disappears, leaving me with a black screen.
Samsung don't seem to really care if you have rooted or not, so far about 4 people in 2 days on this and other for mums have returned phones because they have possibly bricked them, all got them exchanged with out a problem.
To unroot and return your galaxy S3 to stock for warranty watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8Tga_yKywc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Flash a stock rom for your phone and location or if it was a branded phone flash that .
Even if it does not boot you stand a better chance under warranty .
Say you where doing a Kies update and it just failed to reboot .

I tried to reboot the stock firmware 'boot-stock-i9300xxale8-gsm.tar', but when Odin failed to reboot the phone, and I manually put it back into download mode, it still said my binary was 'Custom'.
Should I be trying to flash that under 'Bootloader' in Odin or something? Because I've been doing 'PDA' and it hasn't been working.
Download an original, stock ROM from samsung-updates.com or use checkFus downloader.
That is what you'll flash.
This is the one I use: http://samsung-updates.com/get/1932/Samsung_Firmware_GT-I9300_DBT_I9300XXALF6_Android_4_0_4.html
After some further browsing, I was able to fix it thanks to this post here, posted by 'mskip'.

Help Please...I really need some now.
I had my phone unlocked and everything was fine. I have been updating the resurrection remix roms and enjoying them a lot. I was up to ver. 1.7. The problem is that I had some of the screen issues (fine horizontal lines on the screen) and I decided to get the phone repaired. I just got the phone back today and I noticed that Bell repair shop had wiped everything off my phone and put their stock version of ics on and the phone was no longer rooted. I have been trying to root the phone a few times now through Odin (like I did half a year ago) and at first it failed due to not being able to open the serial port. I opened Kies and the phone connected so I knew the drivers were ok. I tried Odin again and this time it went through and gave me a pass......but on reboot, it just hangs on the Samsung screen and I cannot turn the phone on at all now. I either am stuck on this screen or the CWM screen, but it won't carry out any command ie. power off, open zip from scard etc. I really need some help and quite worried about the phone now.
Please, please help
you allowed usb debugging?, go back to download mode and flash a kernel with root.
Go to download mode and flash a stock kernel. If you are unable to get into download mode because you said that your phone wont accept any commands for example pressing buttons then you could buy an USB jig. This will bring you directly to download mode. That would propably be your last chance.
Then flash a stock kernel back on there. Maybe the exact same which was on there before. Or just flash a stock full ICS Rom.

Yahoo!! I finally got the thing unstuck. I tried the Odin procedure again but this time I downloaded a more updated root kernel. It passed, then on bootup it wasn't stuck in space......although it still did not boot up properly. It ended up going just black...with no screen whatsoever. But the CMW program was working though and I was able to do a system restore from a month ago. I was very happy and very lucky I made that backup. Now, not only do I make the Titanium backup, but I also do a backup from the CMW program.....because now I know it's possible to freeze up before I ever get a chance to use Titanium. A good lesson indeed.
Hello.
I have a problem. When I bought my SGS2, I had a branded software (GINGERBREAD). I decided to update it to ICS. Everything went well, but I played a little bit with Android and messed up some things. My power screen did not appear. Phone was just turning off, while I was holding the power button, instead of showing up the power screen, where I could be able to turn off the flight mode for example. Simply, it was just straightly turning off. And I did not have lockscreen. When I pressed the lock key, the screen just got dark, and, when I pressed it again, the screen went on, without the lock screen to tap and move. It just took me straightly to the screen I had had before. I decided to wipe everything, but it did not help. I searched the Net and found my branded ROM, that I seemingly had pre-installed on my phone. After flashing I hoped everything to go well. Unfortunately, it did not solve the problem. I could not even make a call or access the internet. It said, that I do not have access to the network and asked me to put my sim card in, when I had it done. That was weird. I tried to install KI3 ROM, that I found on the net. It restored my Android to 2.3.5 and fixed the problems. But now, when I try to update my Android to ICS, the problems appear again. I just got stuck on 2.3.5 and I do not see any working way to update my Android.
What is funny, even after wiping, on the home screen, when the phone should ask me to type my google account to synchronize and all that things, it just takes me straightly to the home screen. It looks like the data about my account is saved somewhere on PC, and even the wipe does not seem to delete the data. That is rediculous. But this is about ICS only. Gingerbread is OK.
If you could, give me some real working links. I might used some damaged ROMs or something like that. I do not know, I have no clue. I've been trying to fix that since I got the problem, so I am really hopeless.
Thanks in advance.

1. Download a stock firmware. But, register first.
2. Download Odin.
3. Happy flashing.
I have tried to use Odin. I do not know, which link shall I choose. On the site, you gave me link to, there are a lot of ROMs. Which is the stock?
They are all stock. Where did you purchase your phone (location, carrier), do you have the i9100 or other (i9100t, i9100G, i9100p etc), is it branded.
I am from Poland, so I bought my phone in Poland. The carrier is Play and I have the original I9100. I have already tried to re-install stock firmware and then ICS, but I have no lock screen and no power menu. I also have no connection, it says put a sim card in, even, when it is in. Wipe does not help. I do not even have the first-start screen, when it asks you to type your google account data and synchronize. It just installs and updates aps and that is it. That is weird. It was OK before, but it got screwed up.

Like i said, flash the stock firmware. Sammobile.com>register>FIRMWARE>select your device, region etc>download.
I did, I tried to use the older version of Odin (1.3), and it helped a little bit, but I can not still update Android to ICS properly. I just get sometimes lock-up screen and/or a lot of red messages in recovery mode and I can not boot my system up.

Use CHECKFUS to download your providers or your matching original ICS firmware and flash via ODIN .
Problems then suggest a full wipe of the phone and sd card .

I will try that. But, one more question. Shall I use the PC version of CHECKFUS or the mobile one?
Use the PC version, which will enable you to download the rom & decrypt the package automatically. Connect your phone to PC via USB, fire up Odin, and choose the rom package you download with Checkfus in the PDA section. Flash.

Currently, I did the steps you gave me above and now Odin is flashing my stock kernel (at least, it is supposed to be my stock ROM). Stay tuned.
@ REFRESH.
After flashing, recovery mode vomited with a lot of red messages with errors again. As it was a 3 files ROM, I selected PIT and checked re-partition. Should I leave these options untouched, even when it is the 3 files ROM?

The advice on XDA is never use PIT and never repartition .

I did, but it did not help. What about trying to unmount these directories instead of just formatting in CWM RECOVERY?
Do a full wipe again...select PDA on Odin for rom file...select CSC also and insert the same firmware file u have inserted into the PDA onto the CDC..... It will change ur sales code back to the stock firmware and wipe all the crap that was on there before.do not select any other option on the odin board other than the ones that should already be ticked/selected
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
I've managed to fix that.
I just had to use a command prompt from Play Store, to change a line of code in one file.
Early yesterday I launched Kies and hit the update firmware option from the tools menu to see if the alleged ICS update was available for my phone. It appeared it was with, a message promoting that it would clear all personal data from the phone, which I then selected cancel so I could do a backup of pictures/videos on the phones internal SD.
Without doing any sort of backup yet I shutdown the phone, only for it to freeze on the shutting down screen. After 20 mins I pulled the battery and let the phone cool down since it had gotten warm trying to shut itself down. After replacing the battery and turning on it was stuck in a bootloop with only the SGS2 logo, never reaching the ATT logo.
At that point I came to XDA, which I frequently browse but have yet to root, and began reading and searching everything I could find.
Hours later I decided to attempt to flash the stock firmware from sammobile.com using Odin. The flash took a long time and I assume never completed. I left it overnight since I didnt want to unplug it mid-flash. Checking back in the morning the phone is black, Odin says failed/disconnected, and I find the battery completely drained. I charged it for a while then tried turning it back on and got the yellow triangle "firmware upgrade encountered an issue..." screen.
Now i'm attempting once more to flash the firmware but again it has been 30 mins on Sbl.bin. I've had a hard time finding stock firmware in different varieties with working links, so to not increase the flash counter in the event I ultimately have to send it in for repair.
Any suggestions on where to go from here? I've followed every direction I can find for flashing stock firmware and nothing has been successful.
Glad to help if I can. Please tell me exactly what package you flashed from sammobile, with a link if possible.
You should change the title of the thread.... I killed my phone. LOL!

Try this.....
2c.) How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows)
Download the "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" package from Hotfile. Extract the contents of the zip file to a directory on your hard disk drive. This is a One-Click version of Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package plus stock modem from the development forum. (Contains stock zImage, factoryfs.img with root, and modem.bin.)
Start the Odin3 One-Click Downloader program by double clicking on "I777UCKH7 OCD With Root.exe".
Now Enter Download Mode:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.
In Odin, the small edit box in the upper left corner will turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8]. The number could be different.
Click Start. Watch the progress bar advance in green while the message box in the lower area describes the steps. When the flash is finished, the top left larger edit box will turn green and say PASS! and your phone will automatically reboot.
Unplug the usb cable from you phone after it boots up. Success. You're Rooted.

BROKKANIC/krips2003: Thanks for helping so far, but no luck. Those both link to the same Odin One click. This and another one click I tried do not show the phone connected to any COM#. But, in the non-one click Oden the phone shows up. I have pulled the battery and changed USB ports and it still will not show up in the one click.
In the mean time I'll see if there's a solution for that, but I'd like to hear any other suggestions.
Edit: I get the feeling Odin is not starting the write process, since neither the progress bar or words show up in the box above COM# until AFTER I unplug the phone, at which time it flashing quickly then displays Failed.

Try using another micro usb wire if you have one. If not then get one from radioshack or bestbuy. I had the almost similar issue on my captivate with the original USB cable. Then I got a Rocketfish one from bestbuy and it worked like a charm.
I'm sure you might have already done this. Make sure you first run the ODIN and then put your phone in download mode.
krips your a genius!
The one click is now working thanks to the suggestion to pay attention to order of operations. I must have never plugged the phone in AFTER starting the one click. This was easily overlooked when I've been switching the phone between 2 PCs and 3 micro usb cables.
I now have a progress bar and have had made more progress than in the last 24 hours. Even after searching I did not find this solution, even though it's stated in the directions and it seems trivial, maybe it should be emphasized the one click needs to phone plugged in after it's running.
Thanks again. I'll update this post when it's back to being a phone again.
PS. BROKKANIC: you were right, if I didn't kill my phone then I sure was the impeding factor in its recovery.
Good news/bad news. Still stuck in bootloop, but now have SGS2 logo instead of yellow triangle. Trying to enter recovery mode crashes the phone soon after it appears.
Is this a bootloader problem, kernel problem, or something else?

I believe that what I have been doing. I ran I777UCKH7 OCD With Root.exe, which resulted in bootloop, then ran I777UCKH7-CL503881-No-BL.exe, which also resulted in bootloop. Both completed successfully, but resulted in the same bootloop.

I've resorted to my WinXP laptop which has been more successful than my Win7 desktop. On the Win7 attempts everything is run as admin, but has many time bluescreened and hard reset the whole PC when attempting to flash anything with Odin. Maybe a separate issue, maybe not. But the XP machine is atleast successfully flashing the Odin one clicks.
Update: Odin standalone (non-one click) appears to be unable to flash anything, it will only hang when trying to write. One click Oden packages seem to work. Is there a one click with full stock sbl, param, kernel, etc?

I haven't flashed a package with a bootloader yet. The only ones that work for me are Odin one click packages, and the two I've tried do not have bootloaders. I've been looking for one WITH a bootloader but no such luck yet, since maybe that would solve the problem.
The guide/link you've suggested will not work for me at this time. I do not have the ability to boot into any andriod OS. The only capability my phone has is executing Odin one click packages for some reason, even Oden standalone firmware flashes do not work.
I had a similar issue...I eventually got mine stuck at the ATT droplets....
Finally I flashed back to 2.3.4 stock....did the ota...then upgraded to ICS.
Its all on my work laptop so I wont be able to post any specific files or their names until monday...
Good luck!
Once your phone gets to the boot screen try to get into stock 3e (both volume buttons + power till 2nd SGSII splash screen) recovery and do a factory reset. Should boot after that. Good luck.

Why not try a custom ics rom? What else do you have to lose? Staying stock is overrated anyways. You may also have an antivirus stopping Odin but I doubt it. Just turn off your antivirus and try.

Hi guys, I'm new to XDA, flashing roms and sadly 'soft bricking.'
Or atleast that's what I think it is. Essentially i downloaded a couple of ROMs that I was testing out; and one of them was for an i9300; my phone is a locked to the optus (australia) network i9305 (4g) (sgS3 LTE [that's what the yanks call it, right?]. I had cwm back up and i had read into the whole ordeal a lot. I did everything it said and it sort of worked; the device was rooted CF-root via ODIN and the device had once been rooted before through framaroot. I checked the root using root checker, and got ready to install the custom ROMs. I copied the .zip to my external SD card and i went into cwm and clicked install or load or whatever. It didnt work-- at first i could get back into cwm but now I CAN NOT GET INTO ANDROID SYSTEM RECOVERY, CLOCKWORK MOD AND IT GETS STUCK ON THE BOOT. I think it's soft bricked because i can still get into download mode.
SO firstly, what steps should i take?
when i connect it (usb cable) to the computer it doesnt show up on kies though its got all the right drivers.
I'm quite lost.

Does anyone know how i can get out of this nightmare? would it be worth to pay OPTUS $258.01 AUD for them to fix it?
What method have you tried to get into clockworkmod since this happened? Just to clear up any potential lose ends.
Guessing, pulled out battery for 5 secs, put in (make sure it doesn't boot automatically as soon as the battery is back in), hold down these buttons in order for 5 seconds home + volume down + power. You can also try both volumes up/down and up in this combination. They generally may do different things.
Keep calm, as long as we have All in one toolkits or Odin, it's nearly always okay.

I haven't tried to get clockwork back. my computer won't even acknowedge the phone plugged in so i dont know?
i;ve done that-- it only gets to download mode
Also, i can't get into any sort of recovery mode (clock work or android system)
i have Odin on the computer, but it doesnt read the phone
Good, download mode is all you need for an AIO or Odin to work. While it may not recognise the device conventionally (generally the software is trying to work in MTP or usb mode), download mode is just fine.
Download Unified Android Toolkit from here: http://www.skipsoft.net/?wpdmpro=skipsoft-unified-android-toolkit-v1-2-8
And it gives pretty good steps to run procedures on your phone. From memory it lets you flash a custom recovery, flash certain roms and a few other things.
[Edit]
You have installed the Samsung usb pc drivers right?

Just one thing I would like to point out reading your thread is that you say you downloaded a number of roms including a I9300 your phone is a I9305 (DO NOT FLASH I9300 ON A I9305!!) This can potantially brick your device! Also uninstall Kies if you want to use Odin it interferes with it.
Last but not least you have posted in I9300 thread their is a dedicated I9305 thread here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help-i9305 <<

Is my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Bricked ?
I got the phone from Ebay on July 6,2015 everything was great
But on the morning of Sep 21st looking at my gallery pictures, I found they deleted themselves?
not knowing what that meant I went looking for recovery software "Wondershare Dr.Fone for Android"
it was not working so I had to root(?) my phone, so I went to the google play store and found a root app that seem
to have high reviews, tried it and did not work out right the phone restated saying "Samsung's firmware upgrade encountered an issue" so the next day did some research first before trying anything. I downloaded Odin3 and entered download mode & flashed the Samsung it restarted had it on for 3-4 hours
then turned it off & turned it on later to find it would not go pass the Samsung logo so I went to hold the off button shutting the phone off that happen 2 times and on the 3rd try turning it on It did not come on at all. Went to see if google had anything on this some say it is bricked and need to use a jig so I got one from a USA seller on ebay and returned it because it did not work at all. Not the phone still won't come on & I can't enter download mode, how do I fix this, is it a boot loader problem? is it hard bricked? do I need to take it to someone if so who & how much would that cost? you think.
Other Info of the phone
70% of battery is on the phone
It's factory Unlocked
Root Software I tried to use was (Kingo SuperUser)[Root]

Should I post this in the Troubleshooting Forum?
The pictures I took on the phone disappeared all 300+ pictures disappeared .I am the only one using the Samsung
and it was on my table all that day. So I went to google to find a photo recovery software & found a software called
Wondershare Dr.Fone for Android (you can find videos on youtube) & using the software it can do 2 things, auto root the phone to find the photos and bring it back to normal or you Have to have your phone rooted. The auto root setting was not working on the Wondershare Dr.Fone for Android software so I went to the google play store on my Samsung and found a root app that a lot seem to like as it was 4.4 stars, went to install that the app stated I should have "Kingo SuperUser" on my computer so had that put on the went to root the phone & it did not work.
I got a screen on the Samsung saying "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." Youtube had a video on this same problem so I went to Sammobile's site and download the firmware what was
"2014-06-11 USA(Verizon) Version 4.4.2 PDA (I605VRUFND7) Kies. After I downloaded that I downloaded Odin3_v3.10.6 opened it had auto "Reboot & F.Reset Time" selected and added the firmware MD5 file add in the "AP" secion then Entered Download mode on the Samsung & hooked it up to my computer
then I hit start about 30min later it Passed with a green light and everything seem back to normal 3 hours later I went to turn the Samsung off and latter that night when I went to turn it on it got stuck at the Samsung logo that happen 2 times and on the third time it did not come on & so can't "enter download mode" and the "usb Jig" did not
work. What happen & what do I need to next. Do I take the phone to someone to fix this.
Short version of the story
.Pictures I took 300+ disappeared so when looking for recovery software
.Found a software called "Wondershare Dr.Fone for Android" (the software had "2" Options for recovering. 1 the software would
Auto Root and bring the Samsung back to normal after recovering the pictures or I would have to had the phone already rooted.
. When to the google play store with the Samsung, found a root app download that & "It stated I should download "Kingo SuperUser" to my computer so I did that.
.It failed & got a screen on the Samsung Saying "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".
.Went to Sammobile's site and download Firmware 2014-06-11 USA(Verizon) Version 4.4.2 PDA (I605VRUFND7) Kies
.Download Odin3_v3.10.6 had auto "Reboot & F.Reset Time" selected and added the firmware MD5 file add in the "AP" secion
Entered download mode & the Samsung passed
.Everything was back I had it on for 3-4 hours then shutdown the phone later that night went to turn on and it got stuck
at the Samsung logo 2 times and on the 3rd time it would not turn on nor enter "Download Mode"
.Got a "usb Jig" & that did not work and now I am here wondering what do next & what happen to my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 do I need to take to someone to fix it ?

You may have a possible hardware problem then= a bad motherboard and possible replacement!!!....Can you power it on in anyway shape or form??...meaning can you toggle it into recovery??...can you toggle it into DL mode??....does it pwr on to the bootloader screen and continuously loop???.....if you can do any of those things then its not hardbricked, which means you need to reconstuct the SW and then see if the Hardware holds stable....If it doesn't....then it could be a severe HW problem!!!....For the future be advised that, you completely took the wrong road to achieving blindly what you intended to do!!...meaning ....you should've completely took control of the situation and been totally proactive in your rooting and unlocking the bootloader...you wrongly turned to 3rd party APP's when you should've read first...educated yourself completely on what you were to embark on, and then set everything up with 3 different choices of rooting/unlocking..again depending on what ROM version your operating on, before engaging!!.....NEVER TRUST 3rd party APP's to do something only you should have step by step control of = lazy!!!.....I personally wouldve 1st tried to get to the stock 3e recovery, and attempt a nandroid backup of the phone as it was...then afterwards try to get the phone detected on my computer, so as to access the file containing the photos, transferred them to the computer safely... then flash the phone to a stock ROM with root already baked in or not = equals totaly factory stock.. doesnt really matter!!!.... and then set up the phone again, and see what it WILL!!! or WONT!!! do!!...point is, easter-egging a problem carelessly, will cause you to either install the wrong stuff or go completely outta proper sequence and either hose the SW, or worst case scenario....corrupt the primary Bootloader and hardbrick it!!....if you can power it into DL mode!!!.... Then, 1st BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!!.... go get Odin 3.07....then get the Samsung drivers for your computer to detect the phone...then DL the Pit file "sch-1605-16gb.pit"....then the proper stock ROM..4.1.1...4.1.2 in .TAR files only, BTW there is a stock 4.1.2 with rooted already in it!!....and then flash your phone using Odin with the pit file and then tick the PDA .tar file of whatever ROM. you choose.....I suggest 4.1.2 as a base to start with and reconstruct it, re-root it if necessary, that's if you choose the one W/O rooted baked into the ROM and unlock it with advice above using ghetto root, do not use adams outlers unlocker, there seems to be problems with it, triggering KNOX, and YOU DO NOT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN!!....relying on 3rd party app's will FK you up....use your head...not your heart!!...and yes you really should post NEXT time in the trouble-shooting forum, but for now leave it here!!...for your benefit!!
