[Q] Voodoo sound working on the GS3 (Sprint)? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

My OG Epic 4g kicked the bucket. I loved voodoo sound on my phone. Does voodoo sound work with the GS3 yet? I know it has the same codec. Did a quick search on the subject and didnt find anything,

Its not working yet on the i9300 but the dev who makes it stated its coming to the i9300 so I'm sure it will soon to u guys not 100% though

supercurio has no us variant to test with yet. the international uses a completely different DAC (wolfson) so its like a different phone in terms of voodoo sound. It requires completely separate legwork. He's curious about the us version but is not working on it and hasn't even heard audio through it yet so don't get your hopes up. I desperately want it too, just trying to be realistic.

The US sgs3 doesn't have the wolfson audio chip that the International version and all other voodoo devices use so it is unlikely that we will get voodoo sound. It is possible that supercurio does some other sort of sound enhancement like his voodoo louder he made for non wolfson devices. We'll see what happens after he gets it working on the international s3.

I thought it was confirmed a few days ago that the US variants DO have Wolfson DAC?
Anyways, OP try Awesome Beats mod in the Mods section. Not exactly the same but it should keep you satisfied until we figure out whats going on with Voodoo Sound

I know I cried too lol. It absolutely doesn't. Supercurio chilled with peeps from wolfson so he knows.

it doesnt need wolfson... this is the same level only qualcoms chip.

I think another way to word it would be the same quality. So it's still a great DAC, just not Wolfson

Is it possible? KA5+Voodoo+Voodoo Sound

I for one use my phone as my main MP3 player in the car, and after using the new Dragon Kernel with voodoo sound the difference was absolutely flipping amazing. Just the battery died so fast that it wasn't even worth it.
So I ask you this. Is KA5 Kernel with Voodoo and Voodoo Sound possible? Does it already exist? AM I ASKING TO MUCH!?!?!
I for one would personally like to see this, any takers?
it does not exist. your best option would be to flash Nero V5 ( this is KA5 )then flash dragon kernel 2.8 so that u will have voodoo sound and buy a car charger. i have Nero V5 and dragon kernle too so i know how short the batterty life is. despite that, it's still long enough to get you through a day especially if u have a car charger and a home charger. better option will come in a short future. have faith
Thats Sad news, your post brought to my attention the existince of such a thing as voodoo sound. Man that blows. The new KA5 that comes with Nero 5 is giving me grief so I may give that other one a go.

As soon as we get KA5 source code, you'll have your kernel.

I'm in the same boat, I LOVE the sound in my car, but I can't stand the battery life, might just give in, and go back to 2.8

I second this. There exists a Voodoo kernel that improves sound quality?
this is proof
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910412
I'm waiting for Voodoo sound on a Vibrant kernel too... The ridiculously poor battery life of Dragon Kernel makes it a deal breaker
Haha yes. Samsung...SOURCE CODE. RELEASE IT YOU ****ERS...
But while we wait in agony, there IS an app which does the SAME thing as Voodoo sound. The drawback is it has to do it in software continuously hence its less elegant than Voodoo sound.
HOWEVER, it has NO effect on battery life. Maybe 1% total...I wouldn't call it anything really.
It is called Audioboost. I believe you can find a paid version of it on the Market now, or if you're willing to look, there is a free version of it in burried in the Galaxy S I9000 dev forums. Hope it helps the great lot of you while we wait for Voodoo sound to make it into the kernel.

Not being an ass but google "voodoo sound galaxy s" and one of the top websites will explain it completely, which is what I did.
Long story short though; Galaxy S phones have really good audio hardware but poorly written drivers. Supercurio (VooDoo creator) has written VooDoo sound to compensate for this. Unfortunately it's based off the i9000 and not Vibrant so if you want it you will need to flash a Voodoo sound compatible kernel.
Personally I am going to hold out for TW or someone to write it into their ROMS which will be when the source for US is leaked *hopefully*. I am just too happy with everything else on my phone to start mixing and matching.

Buahahaha, no it's true. I had to research it myself aswell cause I could believe it.
I am here to testify, voodoo sound is worth its weight in gold. The most current version of dragon kernal can be found on teamwhiskey.com, dragon kernal v2.8. Its louder and clearer, literally like night and day.
I downloaded the Over clocked version of dragon kernal, and its burning fast. But yes the battery will require me some car charging to get through the day. Not a big deal. My only issue is it freezes from time to time requiring a reboot. But voodoo sound, yes give it to me baby!

Volume for media?

Is there a way to really raise the volume when playing music through the audio jack? I have it plugged into my car and it's just unacceptably too low.
I'm sure this is something that could be easily hacked, is there any methods out there? I downloaded and bought louder volume hack from the market, doesn't really do the job.
I just don't know what it is. When playing music through an Aux input, it just sounds muddled and low. I don't remember this with my droid. Any suggestions?
Just before the froyo leak, voodoo sound was being implemented into eclair kernels that was truly amazing. Voodoo sound made use of the good headphone amp within our device that samsung seemed to have neglected. But the developers are at the mercy of the froyo source code being released for our phone for that feature to be added to the froyo kernels. I really really really miss voodoo sound.
Voodoo sound thread.
good day.
Things like this are the reason I don't want froyo yet.. It sucks no new stuff is gonna be made for dj05, its such a good rom.

Way to Increase Max Volume?

I was just wondering if there is any way to forcibly increase the max volume limit on ICS? I've seen some apps in the market that claim to, but wanted to ask here first. I can't hear the phone ring if I'm in just a moderately loud environment, and my last phones (iPhone 4, Galaxy S and OG Droid) were all PLENTY loud.
Let me know, thanks!

I agree with the OP and would like to see this myself. I can never hear my phone if there is mild background noise. Almost never hear texts unless it is dead quite.
Was at a strip club for a friends bachelor party and my phone rang a few times that night. Never heard it. Kept hearing my buddies iPhone all night though.

how about.....a dev request for just MORE steps of volume?
so like, the steps go by 5 or so
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and so on...that would make me happy with lower volumes, and would make you guys happy for louder perhaps

I actually found one that works well. Its called volume+, and its $2 on the market or free on his forum. For the rezound, because it has beats, it needs a special audio-settings.conference file, which he also has posted on his forum with instructions to add it. I turned the audio settings all the way up and it makes a considerable difference, without too much distortion. Give it a try
Just a suggestion...i make my own ring tones from mp3s in audacity and just pump up the gain. Right now it's the guitar riff from Mr jack by system of a down and it makes people around me jump even in a busy loud store when it rings, hell I could hear it at the last football game I was at.

can you not get DSP manager??? im on GB but was just wondering
I know on CM it would rock the phone on my thunderbolt
but i thought it had something to do with the kernel also because IMO had a kernel that had very low sound and then he revamped it and it came out good
this looks promising but i do not have ICS just got my rezound today but this guy said he extracted DSP from a AOSP rezound ROM

How do you make a phone ring louder with DSP manager??
I have it in my ICS ROM but I don't see any volume settings in it??

probably just set "phone speaker" to have a higher output in the EQ..or just raise the EQ so they're all even, but like 5 steps up or so
With DSP Manager, the only thing that really makes it loud is headset virtual room. But of course its only available for headphone setting. Eq dont do squat in headphone setting...no effect... But EQ works ok on speaker. Just dont go all that loud even with the EQ enabled, but no volume boost for main speaker. Need louder volume on the Rezound....period regardless what ROM you using. Im on GB still
What about that xloud mod that I've been seeing lately I see that newt baked it into his new Rom and actually works we need to get all the devs to bake this in the roms this and the bravia engine as they are good together cleaner graphics and louder sound

I purchased this app a year or so ago but don't bother installing it anymore. I immediately found it didn't play well with DSP manager, both start FCing constantly if they are installed together. I couldn't see that it made much of a noticeable difference anyway Other than for headset volume and that's plenty loud enough anyway.
Where did you find the beats fix?? I just searched that site for beats fix, Rezound mods etc etc and got no result at all???

It's listed on the releases page I believe, and it's it's own separate thread, called [MOD] htc device fix or something along those lines. And you have to install that audio_settings.conf file he provides if you're on a Rezound for it to make a difference. I installed it and have the volume set to +15 and it makes it unbelievably better. Much, much louder, and I set the eq to Beats like and there's very little distortion at full volume, and notifications/ringtones are much, much louder.
here's the thread for volume+ fix for htc devices with beats:

[CANCELLED] Voodoo Sound for Galaxy S Wi-fi 4.2

Hi guys!
After receiving a lot of request to support Galaxy Player lines I decided to buy a Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.2 in order to provide a quality Voodoo Sound support for this device.
I don't know yet if I'll do the same for 4.0, 5.0 and previous device, with your help maybe − usually I prefer owning devices to be sure to provide good support and solid fully tested update.
I've just received it (it's not even rooted) I'm convinced its a great platform already.
Really accessible price, zippy system, reasonably good IPS display for the price providing an okay color rendering and of course a lovely WolfsonMicro audio codec: I like it!
Too bad my unit is defective because only one speaker of the two works so I'll have to return it, but I figured I could say hello to you guys
If you have questions and requests, I'm listening.
Sorry I don't have an ETA yet, sometimes I'm slow, but I know is that I'll do it right.
EDIT:
Eww just noticed, a required kernel config option (KALLSYMS_ALL) is missing which make the port hazardous.
Maybe it will not be possible eventually.
So to be clear, its possible it won't happen. I don't know yet.
EDIT 2:
Listening tests gave me the impression it doesn't sound as good as I expected from this codec so I didn't wait and measured the output.
THD and IMD+Noise levels are the highest I found on any WM8994 / WM1811 device so far, jitter is present too.
0.017% THD instead of 0.011%
0.019% IMD+Noise instead of 0.012%
.. and that's enough to sound off to my ears.. f*ck my life.
RMAA measurements for Galaxy S Player 4.2 Wi-fi
Nice, thanks for the support. I don't own a 4.2 but this is great. Hope you get them some nice sound improvement.
We do have some voodoo port for the 4.0 (as it have the WM8994) but I don't know if it's really it's true power that it's revealed here. It should have the same config because the WM1811 for the 2.6 kernel uses the same kernel drivers as the WM8994. Also thanks for your consideration! :good:
Also isn't it possible to add the KALLSYMS_ALL config option?

Well my long term project is a fully parametric EQ with some ambitious volume and dynamic range management stuff so I rewrote the whole thing from scratch in this purpose.
Its very complex and takes a hell lot of time but eh, why not.
However after listening tests and then measurement I'm not too sure the hardware implementation on this device is worth it and probably not the sound quality I expect for "Voodoo Sound".
So, I don't know.
For KALLSYMS_ALL, it's what allow to insert the driver in memory − at the right place.
As my target is standard firmware & kernel + root only, it compromises severely the feasibility.
Lots of doubts as you can see so far!
I'm still searching a way to root the 4.2 I have without flashing anything as I have to send it back because of the faulty speaker.
Rooting will allow me to prototype Voodoo Sound change and measure if the sound quality can reach requirements or not.

The project seems big indeed. I would speak french if I could (would be better) but I think in your case it would be good to flash a custom kernel, then root it and then reflash the stock one. Also just knowing, does the I9300 have voodoo sound with them? It could explain a bit of why the YP-GI1 is not that good with the sound (they do have the same chip as far as I can see).

WM1811 is capable of excellent audio performance if the hardware implementation allows it, you can compare YP-GI1 measurements with Nexus 10 ones.
Flashing a custom kernel, hmm as there's no way to return to stock it won't do the trick for me :/
Rooting this device seems like a nightmare without flashing uncertain modified firmware and having no way to go back to stock.
I guess this is not a good platform for Voodoo Sound deployment and will probably just return the device, not matching the requirements in terms of audio quality, ease of rooting and driver maintenance ability.

Okay, I looked for other easy rooting methods.
I could make a cf-root equivalent with 2 devices but I don't have 2 devices, and the device I have is faulty (dead speaker) so I can't modify it before returning it.
Audio quality doesn't seem promising enough, kernels symbols are missing.
I'll ask the seller a return & refund, sorry guys − project canceled so far: FAIL on each most important requirements with this device, I'm disappointed

When you speak for 2 devices, you speak about the 4.0 and the 4.2? If yes the 4.0 can even be rooted with superoneclick (if it's not 2.3.7) If it is, just flash a custom kernel and it should be good (it's a france rom and kernel so if you want to come back, you should have no problem).
Anyway, good luck. :good:

Concretely, I would have need 2 4.2 devices.
Rooting first one with /system to dump the kernel, rooting the second one with a root-injected stock kernel to dump original system and restore it on the first device.
This method would allow to build a stock+root kernel which is my preferred rooting method if no exploit is available.
4.2 is not vulnerable to exploits currently in town.

Yes I'm sure.
However only the US ROM is available around and breaking Wi-fi function for many makes it an unreliable method, stock+kernel would probably be better.

You can find this full firmware here: [ROM][STOCK] Samsung Galaxy S 4.2 WIFI YP-GI1CW ->CODE GI1XXLF1
With the full firmware available, I rooted it simply unpacking factoryfs.img using sgs2toext4 and ext4_utils, injecting SU binary + SuperSU and after repack it, I made a tarball and flashed it throught Odin.
After that I've installed from GP the busybox installer.

Result: SGP 4.2 rooted without flashing kernel with only one device and no problem with wifi.
Hope this could help, and it isn't too late

[Q] Voodoo Sound type app for the S4

Well back on my Droid Charge there was an app called Voodoo Sound Control (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.controlappdonate&hl=en) which did some voodoo magic to the audio hardware and made music sound incredible. For a phone, that is. It seems that Supercurio has stopped developing in general and I was wondering if any of you knew of any replacement apps for it. This app was used for a few Galaxy phones including the S1, S2 and Nexus I believe, so I figured thered be a few old fans out there who found the next best thing. Much love, appreciate any help
