Is there any possible way to change the search key function to be the power instead of search. I am on cm9dx2 and I tried the button remapper APK and it didn't work it would reboot every time I hit apply with no results.
Sent from my MB870 using xda premium
You can change it by modifying the file tegra-kbc.kl located in /system/usr/keylayout. I forget what to change. Let me get back to you on that.
EDIT: Ok, change the line that says
key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED
to
key 217 POWER WAKE
Then reboot for it to take effect.
Thanks alot. Worked great

I think we should have a sticky with this and other key layout options, we are a year and then some into this phone and I'm sure everyone who is still on thier first dx2 are all feeling the power button start to die

My button is definitely wearing down. Its not so clicky anymore. It still works though. But its good to know that if it does completely go out, I have this option.

Hey guys, is there a way to put the screen to only turn on with the power button?? because in my pocket, the other buttons are pressed, so it's using battery and sometimes stop the music i'm listening. The other buttons that i'm speaking are: Search, return, home and menu. I'm using mik's v6.5.8 with fserve's goldenleaf.
I guess u can! Go to cm setting --lockscreen-- unlock options nd edit as u want ...;-) don't for to press thanks

I'll upload the files, simply put them in /system/usr/keylayout/ (Overwrite existing) and set permissions to 777.
you've made it lanis! thanks, you've helped me a lot =D
now, not to detract from this threads original purpose... but it seems as if the OP got his answer, but while we are on the subject of keys and their functions.
Can we make the search button a pause / play button? with CM7 vol up and down are volume and skip buttons, but there is no physical button for pause play, it would be really nice to have that.
Nice wish they had a thanks button on this app that works great I have been meaning to do this for a while

Simply edit the 2 files I've uploaded (You can even edit the original ones) and replace each key's function with the function you want. (Ex. key 222 MENU)

ya i figured that out with a lil bit of googling. So i now have the search for pause n play with out waking hte phone.
But i would like it to act like the vol up and down buttons in CM7. where they have to be long pressed to skip... id like to have to long press to pause and play on the search, and ONLY when the screen is off / phone is locked like the vol up and down buttons.
dang it would be so awesome to have long press like described above.... if anyone could point me to the vol up and down rocker script that does their long presses i could go from there.
Is there a way you can hard-coded, let say the left capacitive button to act as a home button when you long-pressed it? especially on ICS roms that for let say you want to see the recent apps(home button long-pressed) alternatively you'll just long-press the left capacitive button = profit?
My home button is being quirky nowadays(6 months owner) and I don't want to bring it to Service Center just to repair that.. The problem is not groundbreaking(not yet) but this will save me in the future and probably others will so
It's not exactly what you want, but maybe Button Savior will do for you?
I think capacitive buttons are more likely to stop working than the physical buttons. My friend has a motorola Milestone and his back button stopped working in a month. Dont know if it is a bug

Still need to use home-button I'm in CM9 right now and the home button is really ****ed-up especially when I'm multitasking and I really love how ICS implement the task-switching/killing "Recent app"

Well that's a different phone but maybe that can apply to ours. What I mean is that sometimes my home button when I long press and then released it, it double registers the pressing so it's like you pressed again the home button
I am also looking forward for a solution to this. As I also want as much as possible not to use the home button. I quite feel that somehow it is already degrading. Showing press results that are not what I specify. Like for example clicking does 2 clicks thus entering 2 directories in CWM.
Button Savior could have been perfect if the recent apps it shows is the firmware's version. It shows its built-in recent apps instead.
Sort of just been pondering about how useless the capacitive search button is to me (and probably a lot of other people) and how I'm a little envious of the physical home button on the International Note, then I came across an article about how a HTC rom dev had switched their capacitive multitask button to perform the function: menu due to app incompatibility. Now I didn't know capacitive buttons could have their function switched but it kind of had me flirting with the idea of how insanely epic a menu/home/back/multitask capacitive layout would be on Ice Cream Sandwich. I wouldn't be jealous of the International Note's physical home button at all if that were the case. I thought this was a little day dream of mine worth sharing. From what I've read it's just a file in system/usr that needs to be edited, I took a quick look but haven't quite figured out which it is yet.
What about you guys, do you like the capacitive search function or would you like to see it something else?
inb4: yo dawg u can just hold down home
multitask with long-press for search would work for me. maybe there is something in the play store than can do this

I love the search button, especially since it's app-aware for context. I see your inb4, but can you explain why reassigning the search button is better than just holding down home? Is it just a second of time you're trying to recover?
I have my long pressed search button mapped to an app called "AltTabApps" which gives me a longer list of recent/installed apps. Long pressing the home button only gives you 6 recent used apps, which sometimes isn't enough.
I think the button does enough multitasking. Short press to search, then long press to voice search or voice talk"hi galaxy" control... I like the voice search because you don't have to access the s voice controls. You could just simply long press search then select voice search and say text blank, "come over after 3" and it will do it... So having there separate functions under one button works for me great.

I wanted to do this for a while now and finally I got around to it. Basically all I did was to replace search key 217 in system/usr/keylayout/generic.kl to APP_SWITCH. Rebooted and now I have search key remapped to recent apps.

Id love to switch the search button for S voice, and set long press to nothing. Then just tap the search button and it opens s voice.

OK so I figured it out for anyone who is also interested in this, and its very easy. First of all I keep my back light off on the touch keys so there's no confussion. But I did that before switching them anyway...its just the way I like it. So you go to system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl and open with text editor. There are numbers followed by the key action. Just edit the key action to what you want(Make sure its in all caps). in my case I changed menu to back and back to menu. I then pressed the menu soft key and pressed save changes. It actually creates a new sec_touchkey.kl file and renames the old one to a .bak file. Just reboot and your good......

Mine is currently set up as:
key 139 HOME
key 158 BACK
key 102 MENU
key 217 SEARCH
The menu key now goes HOME, cool. The back key still goes BACK, great. Search still goes to SEARCH, awesome.
But the home key still goes HOME. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?
edit: Nevermind, I just realized this file is only for touch keys. By editing sec_keys.kl I was able to achieve the results I wanted.
I'm curious if we could change the back key to a RECENTS key. Like the nexus.

Has anyone found what tells the home button to call up recents when held?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Hmm new to android here, be gentle. I too would like to know how to remap the RECENTS key. I would love to swap MENU and RECENTS. I bought Root Explorer and checked out all the files, didn't see anything that had "RECENTS" in it.
Seems like a ton of people want the hold-for-open-apps button and menu key swapped. It would make multitasking sooo much better.
I'm wondering if it's possible to remap the capacitive Search button to open up the ICS Recent Apps menu instead, exactly like described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21501238
I'm on stock OTA 4.0.4 rooted, but I'm not sure if a custom rom has this functionality or I have to try to make it myself (no idea how!). There seem to be mods but are for other devices.
Currently if I modify the cy8c201xx.kl in /keylayout (i.e. change SEARCH to APP_SWITCH) it just opens up the old gingerbread app switcher.
Hmm.. This shouldn't be too hard to do.. I'll have a few friends of mine take a look into it with me, and come back with what I find They're long-time Android Hackers
EDIT: Talking with my friends, will be working on trying to get this to work Can't promise anything, but I'll sure try to get it working! lol.. It would be something that I want too

Hi, I found this on another Droid Forum:
You just need to edit the corresponding key mapping file in /system/usr/keylayout/ to make the changes you want. On my Razr Maxx the file that controls the 4 capacitive buttons is named cy8c201xx.kl. To swap the key functions you just change the word next to the key number: i.e. replace SEARCH with MENU and vice versa. Make sure to backup your original just in case.
You can set it to any function that is defined (POWER, AUTO_ROTATION, VOLUME_UP, etc.) you just need to know the proper name. I have read that recent apps may be APP_SWITCH but I have not tested it myself. I do not know how to create a new function if it is not already defined.
Hope it helps.

Works Great on my XT912. I can now lock my screen by short pressing the cap search
I know that on phones that you have to use the power button to lock/unlock it is usally the first button to fail.
Now I need to figure out how to wake using a cap button.
Here's the original
Code:
key 158 BACK WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 139 MENU WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 102 HOME WAKE VIRTUAL
Here's what I changed
Code:
key 158 BACK WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 139 MENU WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 217 POWER WAKE_DROPPED VIRTUAL
key 102 HOME WAKE VIRTUAL
