Hi guys.
First, thank you all for this forum, it is amazing the amount of information it contains.
I tried to find an answer to my question but did not find.
I have installed on my S2 a custom ROM. However, I would like to come back to a stock one for doing few checks.
My question is which one? I know that they are currently coded depending on the country, but does it really matters which one you do install?
French, Spanish, Australian, American?
Thanks,
No, you can install witch firmware you want, but then you can't update with KIES Do you want to update with KIES, or do you flash a firmware with ODIN ?
Get the latest from Intratech's thread but stay away from any LQ5 builds.
All contain English but you want a ROM with your language if not Englissh.
EDIT: PLEASE BACKUP ROM FROM RECOVERY!!

Thanks guys, actually, for the updates, I hope to do them Over The Air on Wifi.
I usually use my phone in English, so I look to be free to install any one of them.
I did try this morning a LQ5... well looks like it's not so good, just the developer mode in Settings, apps, is not showing up.
Anyway, I will try to revert to an older one, or maybe try the Resurrection Remix.
Thanks

Hi mihaixp.
Thanks for the tip, however, I did not chose to use my region's one, and I did try yesterday the Ressurection Remix custom ROM.
It's really cool and working fine for now.

However, I can see it's missing stuffs:
- timer/Chronometer
- The Text Note app, that I used to use quite a lot.
Otherwise, it's pretty nice and fast.
Well I think those certain apps was Samsung ROM apps, some call it bloatware but others find some stock apps to be very nice.
Yep, that's what my research said, it's Samsung applications.
I did manage to find good replacement on the Play Store for chronometer and timer, and for Notes and synchornisation.
However, I am still struggling to port the one I had (and that are now backed up as Google Drive docs) into the new Note app I did take.
I did downlad as well the FM Radio apk that was missing from the ROM.
It seems to work well and even include RDS
Should try the NEATROM which is base on Stock Samsung ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569686
I have been using this ROM for sometime now. In Australia I also flash the xxlpx modem. Works very well, good battery life, everything works.
I have tried RR, CheckROM, Omega, CM9 etc, but if you want everything to work smoothly, stick to StockROM.

Hi guys, Just got my sgs2 and was looking for a good, stable, rom being close to asop and having little or no samsung bloats helps. Infusion showed up in my search and it seems to have just what I need. I just want to know what people's general experience has been like (trying to look before I leap ). I used darky on the sgs1 which worked quite well for me. I would really appreciate it if you guys can share your experience with infusion rom. and if there are any other rom you can recommend.
Also I currently have my sgs2 rooted with a custom kernel on stuck rom, which for the most part works very and is damn fast and snappy. Do you think having a custom rom would make much difference? Thanks in advance
Yes, it is without a doubt my favourite rom. Very stable, improved my battery life and has everything a custom rom should (deodex, CWM, root etc).
At the end of the day though, try it and see. If you don't like it you can always download your stock rom and flash it back, or even try another custom rom like VillainROM or LightningROM

So I want to install some custom ROM but as I can see EVERY ROM has some bugs and I really hate that, is there any ROM that can be installed and that they are bug free, I want to use the phone, not flash it every week. I really like CriskeloROM, it looks great and it has that great camera tweak for better sound but it has some BT issues etc. So other are, MIUI, Cyanogen and Darkys, are they bug free ?
Thanks
MIUI based on CM7 & AOSP, CM7 based on AOSP, both of these are not yet stable but good enough for daily usage, camera's are much weaker compared to stock Samsung.
Samsung based roms stick with something based on stock, like VillainRom, KitchenRom, and such. Plenty to choose from.
Or custom roms such as Cog, CheckRom, HyperDroid, plenty to choose from. Read each one and see what users are saying about them, best way is experimenting yourself.
Then either stick with CF Root as a kernel based on stock or experiment with others like Speedmod, Siyah and a like.
Asking a general question like this will usually lead to comments from users on roms they are currently on saying its the best etc, so you'd be even more lost!
I could say X is good Y would say Z is good and such
for one why do you want to flash a custom ROM? first answert that to yourself
if answer comes i rerally dont want, then simply root your phone.
you can always flash stock newer roms like 2.3.5 roms
i for one actually dont need custom roms as im very much happy with stock and anything i cant do on stock i can after root.
i used to use custom roms when on my older htc phones when stock were slower and custom roms were faster, but with this specs stock is fast enough.
Thanks to both. Well, I want to have that better camera that has better video and sound and also I like those lock screen on CriskeloROM with shortcuts like HTC. And I hope that they have better battery and are fasgter than stock !? If, not, is there 2.3.5 stock that has Croatian language and I coul try ti use that rooted first and remove some Samsung annoying apps, right now KIES says 2.3.3 is the latest. I definitely dont want worse camera on my phone, only better so pelase direct me in the right way because I dont know where I can find stock 2.3.5 woth better camera app.
Tnx a lot
Cognition for me. Always install ROMs fresh to prevent problems.
Go for a KI4 rom, Criskelo had modified the camera for that 2.3.5 version you can download and just replace using a root file explorer.
As for rom, I'd say look into RomKitchen, optimized stock rom and works well. The guys over there are also very nice and helpful. Like most tbh.
Ok, but can you please point me what I need ? I have CF-Root now and I have read that I should not use ROM Manager for backup of current ROM and I dont know how do make NANDroid backup ? Is that with 3 button combo and then I have that option ?
Also, I see that there are more than one thread with RomKitchen name in it, which one should I take and how can I know if they have croatian because I didnt find that info on any ROM. I can backup my ROM with CWM app ? I have just clicked it and it has rebooted and backuping something on internal memory, I didnt turn on the phone with 3 button combo.
EDIT: is this the one, in the 2nd post ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171523&highlight=kitchen
Tnx
One more thing, if I make complete backup with Titanium and then restore it on some ROM which does not have stock Samsung apps will it be ok then and it will not restore those apps ?
Ah wait, they don't do KI4, only KI8 & KI3 in kitchen.
To flash a rom via CWM, vol up + home + power, I recommend installing fresh, so wipe factory data, cache and dalvik cache under advanced.
Use Titanium to only back up app data for your applications and no system data.
You can use KI8 or KI3 those are good to, KI8 being newer, or from their post KJ1.
http://romkitchen.org/sgs2/?s=generator
I have donwloaded this KitchenApp and there I can see more ROMs and other oprion, I dont need to install other kernel ? Now I have XWKF3. When I choose everything I just press download and it will download it on my phone and from that Kitchen app I can install that ROM ? I can make the ROM in app and here online, it says GAlaxy S but I hope it is for i9100. I generate ROM and then transfer it to root of the mass storage and then flash it trough KitchenPro app on the phone ? It will NOT erase my photos and backups on mass memory ? What backup and with what app should I make before flashing ? I have made some with ROM Manager, I hope it is ok.
What Model and Kernel to choose ?
But if I want to backup apps and widgets from the Market with Titanium ? Or just choose thoe market apps and not system apps and settings ?
Thank you VERY much for your patience but when I make it one time then I will learn, now I have like zillion questions because I come from iPhone 4.
What kitchen app?
Oh you are using CheckROM? That's the newer one, I was talking about RomKitchen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14934522&postcount=5
I have tested many Roms but for me Hyperdroid from Androidmeda is the best Rom out here.. Fast smooth and a hyper great support... Since this Rom I never switched to another Rom... I am AT HOME

Is CheckROM ok ? It seems great.
@seavers11: please dont mess with my head with another ROM )) I must take one that is bugfree and that it looks great, I dont mind speed and that stupid quadrant score.
CheckRom is good, the kitchen app allows for easy customization.
Just trying out GingerMod and that's lovely as well. AOSP feel based on Samsung firmware with mostly AOSP apps but with some goodies from Samsung left over like camera and such.

Depends on were you live for CSC and modem. I use UK csc and KI1 modem as it gives me better data coverage.

But go for something stable maybe SpeedMod or CF root based on stock later you can experiment with other kernels.

OMG i just checked that rom and it looks amazing! built for touchwiz haters like me, who still admit that the samsung browser and camera app are far better than stock android
The new Checkrom and Leo's kitchen is very solid, I don't think there's anything bugfree but it gives the easiest option I've seen to try different builds.
Heys guy I just brought a S2 and it will arrive in 4 more days, been using a x10i and has been rooting and installing custom rom.
Now I'm new to S2, any thing in particular that I should know?
What is the Original Android Development and the Android Development difference?
Which is the some of the recommended ROM (no bugs, don't want MIUI) since there's really a lot custom rom compared to my previous x10i.
And one more question, what is the price of the HDTV Adapter? Can I connect S2 to a just HD ready tv with hdmi port? Or it must be a full HD tv?

Original android is supposed to be ASOP tweaks/roms whereäs the other has to do with touchwiz (I believe, but then again I've seen threads crossposted in the wrong section all the time). As for ROMs, I would personally stay far away from the ICS ROMs because they're nowhere near ready for daily use; there are many bugs and problems. When looking through firmwares there's no difference between XW and XX other than the countries that the ROM was released into, you can still flash these ROMs for use anywhere in the world. Personally I'm using XXKK5 because KL1 and above are developer builds with inconsistent framework changes. CheckROM KK5 is what I suggest for a stable ROM that works good. I also highly recommend JKay deluxe. CM7 is also an option, but I personally had problems with charging and was forced off the ROM. Your mileäge may vary. Also there are a ton of radio firmwares available: try out the latest revision and take note of your battery usage over a few days. Try others to see which works best for you. There's no real "golden" radio firmware. I personally use KH3 on AT&T in Phoenix.

If you wanna to try ICS ROMs, I will suggest you try simplistic. Now I use it as daily rom and I feel it's good enough.
And if you want to use HDTC Adapter , I suggest you stay in Stock Rom first. As I know, most custom roms don't support HDMI output.
There are no recommended roms. Try some out for yourself & see how you find them. A rom that works well for me will not necessarily give you the same experience.
for my opinion i suggest you flash cm7
but if like the intersting things, just flash cm7/andyX

Ricey
wait for cm9, i've tried the devel vers and is very fast!
Just a suggestion
Hiya! Well, since you haven't got your phone yet, I would suggest you play around with your stock ROM first. The Original Android Development is for AOSP ROMs, ROMs that were created from scratch. The Android Development section is for custom tweaked versions of the stock ROM if I'm not mistaken.
I'm currently using Simplistic ICS but it has its fair share of bugs. You might wanna try insanity ii. It's a nice AOSP ROM. Never had FC's and it's amazingly fast and battery life is great. Good luck!
Hi bud, good choice of phone. If you want best standard ginger bread go to original development and flash intratech KK5 original Sammy ROM it's seamless!!!
Or, like me and you want to jump into ICS go to www.darkyrom.com and flash facieto's ICS LP2 THEN on top of that, upgrade to his LP6! Came out this week and it's seamless and crash free, all works!

I never met lock screen problem. I am using RC5 + Update 2 , try this combination. Also remember , don't directly flash update package after installation. Following these steps: Install RC5 - (reboot) - Install Update 1 - (reboot) - Install Update 2 - (reboot) - Call from others phone to unlock home button.

Stock ROM, or any ROM based on stock. It needs the Samsung framework. So nothing that is pure AOSP (such as CM or MIUI) will work. If you want a ROM that is as close to AOSP as possible that still supports the MHL adapter, try GingerMOD.

See above, but there are many others. I don't personally use any of them (I'm still on stock, rooted, modded myself), so I can't recommend one above any others. It's a personal preference anyways, so you should just try some and decide yourself.

Hi. I have decided to upgrade my samsung galaxy s2 with miui. Since this is my first time flashing an android device I have a couple of questions.
Firstly, is there a reason why I shouldnt install miui on my phone aside from the void warrancy?
#do I get the warrancy back if I unroot and unflash before I take my device to the service?
Next, i have read that i need to root the device first, before i can install miui. Is that true?
#which kernel should I use for that?
I have heard that siyahkernel Is the best. But on the xda thread it says it isnt compatible with any ICS roms. Will it work with miui 4? Is this thread a root at all? I can only assume it is because it has cpu/gpu oc/uc and ov options...
Also, cfroot Has a big and detailed thread. But this one does not support rom manager. I'd need to use cwm for flashing. Is this a problem?
So with which kernel do I go?
No, use a jig too.
Use Cfroot.
What? You don't need rom manager, not sure what you're getting at here.
I'd recommend using a gingerbread version of miui as it's your first time. Gb is stable, ics isn't 100% there yet.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Good choice going with miui, however I wouldn't use the ics versions at the moment as they are buggy. I would personally recommend wiui latest gingerbread version as it is stable as hell and works with siyah.

Thanks for the reply. But:
Whats a jih?
MIUI install guide (miuiandroid(dot)com/community/threads/how-to-update-upgrade-miui.15424/) says to use ROM manager. But I suppose cwm does the same thing.
I've read somewhere that the last sgs2 miui version is based on official 4.0.3 samsung files. Shouldn't that mean that there are no bugs aside from the ones which are also found on samsung update channels?
I really mainly want miui because of ics, and chrome browser. I have no interest in voiding my warrancy so I can stay on gingerbread. The better UI simply isn't worth it. So you suggest I wait for official samsung updates? (I do want the better UI...)
Thanks for the reply!

No, miui ics introduces several bugs of its own despite being based on samsung rom.

A jig resets your "Custom binary counter", the thing that counts how many times you've flashed a rom/kernel/whatever. Samsung will see its above 0 and may, or may not, said that your warranty is still void.
If you're really that desperate for ics, go for it. Just make a Nandroid backup with CWM incase you don't like it.
No, it's still buggy, but it is still really good & can be used as a daily rom, I would think.

I wouldn't say that I am desperate for ics, but I am pretty sure I will install miui at one time anway. I don't like the cartoonish icons of touchwiz. The question I think right now is, whether I install ICS right now, or should I wait for ICS to become availabe on KIES and install miui later. (I suppose they'll fix the remaining bugs than)
Also, does anyone suggest a different rom than miui, which is better for some reason? I like eyecandy, but I do want performace as well.
Thanks for your answers.

Edit:
If I do upgrade to ics and miui. All I have to do is root it with cfroot and use cwm to do a nandroid backup, and than use cwm to install miui 2.3.16?

If you're not desperate then flash miui 2.3.9. Best rom I've ever used.
MIUI is already rooted. Just root whatever you're on now, make a Nandroid backup of that, and then flash miui. Btw, once you're on miui you'll never turn back

Was back on the ROM in my sig within 36 hours Tried 4 different GB MIUIs, not one gave me anything my current setup couldn't do better. Each to their own though.

Fair enough.
The thread title does however confuse me:
MIUI ROM 2.3.9 Releases [GB] & [ICS ENGLISH FULL]
miuiandroid(dot)com/community/threads/miui-rom-2-3-9-releases-gb-ics-english-full.15662/
So miui 2.3.9 for sgs2 is gb based. If i understand correctly than I have to download from this thread. But isn't installing old versions dumb? Or is 2.3.16 a major jump which introduces new bugs?
Edit:
Okay as far as I understand 2.3.9 is GB and 2.3.16 is ICS. 2.3.9 works very good while 2.3.16 is laggy.
So to get this straight:
I want to install miui 2.3.9-- The steps are:
update to latest version. (i have dukg2 i'll go to kj3)
root with cfroot
backup with nandroid
system wipe, galvik wipe, cache wipe
install miui rom with cwm
???
This is it?
Edit2:
Is there a way to store my defender savegame?
Edit3:
I have read that siyah kernel is very fast. How do i install that kernel?
Do I do all the steps liste above, and than when I am done installing miui install siyah kernel?
Turns out siyah has NTFS usb OTG feature. I now really want siyah.

Before i got samsung galaxy s2 I had a nokia 5800 for 3 years. It was like switching from a sedan to formula 1. I am still so impressed by the power of SGS2 that some minor performance improovements aren't important. Not yet at least...
Thus I am looking for eyecandy (since i can't get ICS and chrome just yet). Which as I've hear MIUI is best at.
Besides, there's no link in your sig. Otherwise i'd love to take a look at that rom. What does miui lack at btw?
Don`t use miui, is ugly

Look in xda sgs2 forum is 20 normals rom and 2 miui, you can change what kernel you want, what theme you want, coz almost all is compatible each others. For miui you need special kernel, special theme, etc. Don`t wasting you time using miui
Rubbish. Opinion is one thing, misinformation is another :-|

Right. Because touchwiz is a lot sexier? Please. The miui themes are beautiful. Even stock looks stunning. But hey, I heard kids love the cartoonish look if touchwiz.

Big banner that says "SlimROM by krinyo75"... not visible on xda's app. Skinny, fast, monochrome - the way I like it (yes, I tried BAT)
What does miui lack:
- installed adfree, still got many ads.
- sammy's stock browser is so much better than MIUI's
- camera is nowhere near good enough
- flaky GPS
- laggy music player (tried it first on my SGS waybackwhen, still no better)
- limited kernel choice
- all phone numbers hyphenated after 3 digits
- don't want workarounds for an app drawer - I want an app drawer, period
Sure some of these sound petty, but horses for courses... since MIUI v4 will be based on Samsung's framework and kernel sources are now released, I'll try it again when it's done.
One thing I love about MIUI - only non-3rd party contacts app I've seen with a list view - no photos, no stupid icon next to contact name.

I don't have any of these problems. But regarding AdFree, it really is quite bad, use adaway, it's a lot better.

I was wondering if someone can tell me for which rom to go. There seem to be many along with CM for this tablet so I am not sure which to use. The tablet comes with 2.2 loaded on mine and thats pretty useless since one of the main uses will be Skype. But I have read that it can be upgraded to 2.3 which support switching cameras so it will be useful with skype.
Thats what I want from the rom too at least. Just be able to work with skype. Can anyone suggest me a rom to use or should I just stay on the official rom after upgraded and just root it?

Hi It would have been better to know if you were using an USA or INTL device, but this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623529 supports both so make sure that when you choose to download one you choose the right one, also this ROM is based on 2.3.7 i think hope this helps

Thank you very much for the replies The phone is a european one (I think) build number is FROYO.XXKD6. So I should stick to 2.3 for now I guess. Thanks again for the help guys!
It would also help if you told us whether you had the 4.0 or 5.0 version of the player as ROMs are dependent on which player you have and whether there international or US versions.

you just assumed he had a 5.0? really should of asked what version of the players he has before suggesting something that could brick his device if its not for his version.
The Model is YP-G70CW/EUR so it should be european and its the 5 inch one. Sorry I did not include the information before.

Any rom developed for GPS 5.0 should work. Just make sure you load the INT kernel.
As none of the ICS builds have the camera thing worked out yet, your best bet is to stay with GB custom roms.
I have both INT and US GPS 5.0 with Eryigit 3.5 roms. It's smooth and stable.
Have fun with your player.
Thanks cvcduty I will go with Eryigit for starters. I do not want it to do crazy things or play any high end 3d games, afar from skype some games would be nice but I want it mainly to read and get on skype. I hope I can install the modded roms without updating it through kies first.. because no matter what I did Kies can't detect it.

You would want kies just for the drivers so your pc can detect the player when you connect it via usb. That would be the only reason you need to load kies software. If you find the right drivers by other means, you really don't need to load kies at all. Matter of fact, I have loaded custom GB roms on players straight out of the box. These players had Froyo from factory.
No need to update your player to factory GB in order to flash custom GB.
If you are having issues with kies, try uninstalling and then reinstalling. You need the driver from that app in order for Odin to detect your player. Once that is done, locate your selected rom in the "pda" area inside Odin and flash. 5 mins to flash and reboot and you are done. Your first boot might take a while so be patient.
Good luck.
For now I am looking for Odin. Lol it can't be so hard to find it since it will be in these forums. Is the latest version 1.85? Also do I have to install the Kernel too or its inside the modded rom? Do I just run odin and choose the rom and install?

there may be newer but 1.85 is KNOWN to work without issue, so best to use it.
It worked like a charm! Very smooth and fast rooting, Odin seems like a great tool to use although the part of having to use certain versions of it for certain devices is a bit complicated. After searching a bit around I understand what you mean that later version might not work as well.
Well I will be sticking to Erygit probably until an ICS rom with camera support appears, if it will. Thanks again everyone for all the help
