[Q] (system) apps safe to remove? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which samsung (system) apps are safe to remove or to freeze with TB?
I froze with TB the next apps:
Deep sea, Double clock analog and digital, FW upgrade, game hub, Helv neue, Kies air, Kies via WI-FI, Klok 3 apps, Luminous dots, Mobile printing, S-suggest, S Voice, Samsung GO, Software update 1.0, Software-update v_3, Weather deamon, Weather main, Weer 120507.01, Windy weather, Yahoo, all 3.
Please feel free to add the apps you removed or froze to get a complete list, MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE REMOVING STUFF!

Do you use SystemPanel and Titanium?

I use SystemPanel to identify apps that are running, and Titanium to freeze apps that I don't want to run. Here is a list of apps that I have safely froze, and a list of apps that I am considering freezing but too scared because I don't know for sure what they do.
Apps that are safe to freeze:
AllShare -- never ran it, so I don't know what I am missing
Buddies Now -- never ran it, so I don't know what I am missing
com.sec.android.samsungapps.una --not sure what it was, but I don't seem to miss it
Daily Briefing --downloads news and stuff to show in its widget.
DRM Protected Content Storage --needed for the Avatar movie.
DRMContentLauncher --needed for the Avatar movie
Fancy Widget --comes with macnut
QuickOffice --lets you view MS Office documents. Not sure why it would need to run all the time though
SNS --social networking sync. I think it's needed for the social hub
SNS Account -- same as SNS above
Social Hub --an app that shows FB and twitter posts
Visual Voicemail --Never used it or needed it. Who uses voicemail anymore??
Voice Dialer --I don't use voice dialing
Wi-Fi Calling --Freezing this one is strange because it still shows as running even after being frozen. Maybe it should be deleted???
wssyncmlnps --another syncing app for one of the apps that I have froze above, I believe
Apps that I am considering freezing, but too scared since I don't know what they do:
BadgeProvider
com.sec.android.providers.downloads
Mobile tracker settings
My Uploads
Task Manager
Wi-Fi Calling --well, I know what this does, but freezing it won't stop it, so it might need to be deleted.
MTP Application
Gallery --why does this continue to run in the BG all the time?
HTC_IME mod
LogsProvider
Processes running under System Processes that I am considering freezing, but too scared since I don't know what they do
mmcqd 0.2
sensorserver_ya 0.1
mediaserver 0.1
rild 0.0
evetns/0 0.0
pvr_workqueue 0.0
zygote 0.0
Anyone want to add to the list, or explain what some of the apps that I am considering freezing actually do?
By the way, I am using the Macnut R13 ROM.
hey nice list...
one question off topic
i can't seem to find Social Hub in my r13 rom..... do you? i know Samsung IM & Email are probably part of samsung social hub.. but i cant seem to find the social hub app itself... weird..
All ROM Devs have removed wifi-calling because you can never shut it down and it eats through your battery.

I'm running Obsidian V5 and I uninstalled wifi calling all together.. I dont plan on using it. Here's others I froze/uninstalled without seeing any issues or anything:
- android live wallpapers 2.2 (dont use any)
- buddies now
- calendar 1.1 (dont use)
- calendar storage 1.1
- calendar sync
- car home 1.2
- car home 2.2
- desk home 1.0
- email 2.2
- feeds & updates (not sure what it is, but hasnt affected anything ive noticed)
- files 1.0
- google voice 0.4.2.8
- live wallpaper picker 2.2
- manage online album 1.0
- samsung apps 1.2.183
- talk 1.3 (dont use it - dont know what it is but always running)
- task manager 1.11
- voice dialer 2.2
- voice search 2.0.1
Wifi calling can be uninstalled through Titanium, but you need to reboot immediately because it will cause constant FCs.
As for the others, I wouldn't touch sns or the providers.downloads. The latter is necessary for market downloads I believe. Also leave the system processes alone unless you want to Odin back.

hello, uhm i just installed titanium backup pro (TBP) and i have one question:
does TBP need to stay running on the background for frozen apps to stay frozen?

No, it doesn't need to run in the background (i.e., just freeze or un-freeze with TB and you're set to go).

appwidgetpicker
so much stuff that usually isn't there with custom clean roms
Anyone? Is there no guide? Link?
I am sure much of these are crap, and removing them can be great. But which?
First of all, most of those are /system apps, so I would not delete any of them until you first "freeze" them with TBpro and see if there are any adverse effects from doing so. much easier to defrost that to push back to /system/app and set permissions. If nothing happens, then you can delete.
I usually delete the picoTTS and keep the appwidgetpicker (this is when you longpress on home and your widgets pull up, it show Beautiful Widgets (19) rather than 19individual widgets.
Here (see below but the thread is a good read too) and here and here is a list of bloatware for your viewing pleasure (simple Google search pulled all these up btw). Almost anything with com...and is red in TB, you should leave it alone.
First off all the Standard Apps:
AccountAndSync.apk/odex -> The app in the drawer, not the settings.
AddToHome.apk/odex
AudioPostcard.apk/odex
Avatar.apk/odex -> The app that launches Avatar in the video player.
BuddiesNow.apk/odex
Dlna.apk/odex [Allshare]
FlashPlugin.apk/odex
GoGo.apk/odex
Infoalarm.apk/odex [Daily Briefing]
KindleStub.apk/odex
Layer-samsung.apk/odex
MediaHub.apk/odex
Memo.apk/odex
Mini Diary.apk/odex
MobiTV.apk/odex
MyAccountStub_4-5-10.apk/odex
Myfiles.apk/odex
Sims3_Samsung_Embed_Launcher.apk/odex
slackerradio.apk/odex
Swype-Tips.apk/odex
Telenav.apk/odex
thinkdroid.apk/odex [ThinkFree Office]
vvm-signed.apk/odex -> T-Mobile Visual Voicemail [can be re-downloaded from the market. for some reason that version is the preferred one.]
VoiceRecorder.apk/odex
VoceDialer.apk/odex
Writeandgo.apk/odex
TouchwizWidgets:
Day.apk/odex
DualClock.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_Calenderclock.apk/odex

[Q] do multiple launchers slow phone down?

I have upgraded to the stock jelly bean and I do really like it. However, I love switching out launchers and keyboards. Now my note has slowed down when unlocking and switching apps. Is this because of the several launchers? Or is it jelly bean? Help!
in advance, thanks
Rachael
I don't think launchers hog resources and slow the device down. Only one should be running at a time. You can check in your stats to see if more than one is. Under settings - applications swipe right to see what's running.
However launcher add-ons can. I noticed go launcher has TONS of cool additions and themes but seemed to kill my battery.
Are you rooted? You can always freeze the stuff your not currently using, and unfreeze when you want it. Also the stock update has a LOT of unwanted apps. Freezing and removing that crap can increase performance.
Thanks for the advice. I have rooted my device and tried to freeze several apps. I am not sure which ones I can freeze. Any advice?

You can always "feeze" an app, then use your phone for a day or 2 to see if anything doesn't work properly and unfreeze it to fix. Stay away from freezing system settings. There is very few you can get away with freezing. Some of the apps I froze you may or may not want to depending on what you do with your phone. Like for example I don't use allshare or quickpic but you might. I'll try to write down as many as I can remember and see are removed thru titanium backup. But I might of uninstalled some and cant remember.
I'll add to the list as I remember or freeze more or if someone add's in future posts.

Apps That Are Safe to Remove From 4.4.2 [NC2]

Here is a list of apps that I have removed from the 4.4.2 (NC2) build using Titanium Backup and Root Explorer. There are more apps that can be removed but these are the ones I've deleted so far. Please keep in mind that you use your phone differently than I do so some of these may interfere with your daily use if frozen/removed. I have completely removed them but the best thing to do is to freeze them for a while in Titanium Backup or rename them with a .bak extension in Root Explorer to be sure that they aren't going to cause any issues.
Feel free to post any additional apps that you have removed and I'll add them to the list.
The following were removed with Titanium Backup:

I usually remove/freeze all that I can with Titanium Backup first then I use Root Explorer for the ones that I can't find in TiBu.
Did you freeze them or did you actually remove the apk? Only reason I ask is some of those might fall under the category of do not remove but you can freeze so we should probably clarify

Is it possible for a moderator airmaxx23 to keep a complete listing in the OP? I cam see this list useful in ROM development. Thanks.
Don't remove my magazine if you're using the email app. Here and now is safe to remove still

Thanks for putting this together. I usually freeze/delete all the bloat I can. I hardly ever use the Samsung apps anyways.
Wanted to drop a thanks as well. I LOVE ASOP and I hate bloat that I never use. I'm seeing some of my best battery life on 4.4.2 with all of the above removed.
I plan on removing some of these items from the system/apps folder of the de odex version before flashing to 4.4.2. I assume there shouldn't be any issues as I have done this with several other roms in the past?

You shouldn't have any issues, but I can't guarantee anything.
Just wanted to say thank you for this helped delete every thing from two N3's.
Just chiming in I did remove a lot of the mention apps from the system/apps directory of nc2 rom floating around before flashing from 4.3 and it works perfectly fine. thanks again for the list!
I removed a lot (but not all) of apps from this list using Titanium Backup. I noticed a few things that broke after doing so and was wondering if anyone knew which missing apps might be the culprit?
1: Automatic screen rotation seems be broken for all apps.
2: I have Battery Widget Reborn installed and the quick settings in the notification shade don't work anymore.
Here is a link to my list.

Hey thanks! I'll compare the 2 lists and try restoring the ones that aren't on your list.
EDIT: Restoring "Easy Settings" in the Titanium gave me back the ability to use use my Battery Widget Reborn quick controls again. Strangely, after rebooting, this program name doesn't appear in Titanium anymore.
Also, I have no idea what is causing my rotation to not work, and no one else is reporting this, so I don't know. I found 2 apps that I removed in Titanium by mistake because I don't any backup for them: media and imsqmisocket.
I may just hard reset at this point.
So I've been trying to track down the app that is causing rotation to break but I can't figure it out. I started fresh and each day I've been deleting around 15 apps twice a day until they have all been removed. Today I removed the last 12 apps from the list and rotation is still working so far.

Thanks for the reply. It helped me to know that I wasn't the only one having this problem. I found the solution today after some searching:

You might want to update your list as I don't think all of these are "safe to remove."

[TOOL][ALL] S8(+) Extreme Debloater [ADB]

Extreme Debloater for dreamlte and dream2lte devices
This small tool will debloat your phone, compatible for both variants
Originally made by @serajr for Xperia XZ2 and XA2, I edited it to add our own bloatware list
Note: This is an adb tool, currently it's only working under Windows
This is very WIP, I need feedback what apps to keep or add, or should I make a different version that won't delete specific apps
If you wish to help, or create your own debloater, go to this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz2/development/oreo-debloat-script-v1-0-t3798979
You can then see a "List Installed Apps Info" .zip file which will collect all installed apps, and export into a .txt file
Deleted/Disabled apps/features:
Bixby
G-mail
Calendar & Contacts syncer
Edge related apps and features
Talkback
Drive
Maps
Several Google services
Facebook installer/services
Excel and Powerpoint
Samsung services and apps
Game related apps
Samsung widgets
UPDATES ARE DISABLED
Please note that this will also disable the Update Center!
If you do a factory reset that should re-enable the apps

No, this won't work with any recovery, since this is an adb tool
Maybe I should put this in thread to avoid any confusion

great tool thanks, but would like to keep Samsung account, Samsung themes, think you need samsung acct, samsung experience, scloud etc apps. And the screen capture, scroll capture, screen write etc for the screen grabs (not sure which apk's though)

Hi, I just looked through the debloater list, and It looks like I never added those apks to the list, so they won't be removed (atleast from the Extreme Debloater, Samsung Debloater removes all samsung apps)
By the way, I removed Game tools and services from the list, so they won't be removed either, since I have seen so many people actually use it
