[Q] Stuck at HBOOT with fastboot only - Legend Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Well, i got myself into this mess and after 3 days of trying to fix it, i give up and call for your assistance.
I had a working S-ON HBOOT 0.47 rooted Legend running CM7.2 and recently changed to Jelly_Bean_Extras_HomICS_2.0_Venus.
I liked the new rom but link2sd didn't work.
My guess was that i need to have it S-OFF.
So... i headed to HTCDEV but first i needed to be on one of the listed RUU.
My original RUU was RUU_Legend_HTC_ISR_2.05.461.52_Radio_47.39.35.09_7.08.35.21_release_140015_signed.zip
I used the LEGEIMG.zip method to flash the RUU and then i flashed the one from HTCDEV which holds "hboot_legend_7227_1.02.0000_111223.nb0" only.
Now the HBOOT got to be 1.02.0000
After flashing this, i got stuck.
No recovery - i get signature failed message - even after putting CWM update.zip on the SD.
No ADB - at all states, only fastboot sees the device.
RUU update gets fails either due to version 3.30.0000, signature or device.
fastboot flash - i thought i will manually flash the various parts. i get FAILED (remote: signature verify fail).
CID was HTC__K18
did a new goldcard based on the old mail i had (from 2010) with the goldcard file (thank you gmail).
but nothing seems to help.
I read a lot of forum posts and tried many things over these 3 days but i'm willing to start over, step by step, with anyone willing to assist.
Hopefully this step by step will assist me and will be a reference guide for others.

Have actually flashed hboot 1.02 yet?
Have followed ALL the instructions at htcdev?
Have you followed all the instructions sent to you via email about how to unlock the locked hboot 1.02, the email also includes a unlock.bin attached to the email which you need in order to unlock your boot loader?
If you had read ANY of the other question thread about this subject (there are a few) you would have found out that after you unlock your boot loader with hboot 1.02 you can no longer use update.zip cwm recovery, you can only use the S-OFF recovery method...
Sent from my Legend using xda app-developers app

I was expecting feeling stupid, missing something simple.
Originally, I couldn't get to step 8 since it requires that the unit didn't respond to fastboot command and while trying to find a fix, i got stuck with only fastboot and didn't remember that this was the step i was stuck in.
Anyway, your response had me go back to htcdev just to prove my point and i found that i can continue.
Finally.
Now i am unlocked and can continue with S-OFF methods.
Thank you.

Currently the phone starts with:

HBOOT-1.02.0000
MICROP-0816

Guess what, your phone is still locked, you typed it yourself, you still need to unlock it using the bin file sent to you in the email.
Don't feel stupid mate, this rooting thing can be confusing and fearsome at times. Even I had that "can't use update.zip" issue and thought my phone was f'ed till I realised I needed to flash the recovery image.
Sent from my Legend using xda app-developers app

ok.
now everything is ok.
flashed cwm.
got the rom back
and restored almost everything.
thank you

just to point out
Jelly_Bean_Extras_HomICS_2.0_Venus is not ROM

If you flashed a good ROM and your stuck in hboot, use fastboot and use the following command 'fastboot oem boot' that should force your phone to boot.

[Q] Root and Mod Aria 2.2.2 HBoot 1.03

My phone has Android 2.2.2 but with HBoot 1.03, so whenever I try Revolutionary or uNRevoked, it tells me that my firmware is too new. I've been searching through the forums for a few days without much success, but if I've missed something somewhere, I apologize in advance for not spotting it sooner. Thank you for any help you can provide.
Scott
Since you upgraded to 1.03, you will have to unlock the bootloader using HTC's method: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/unlock-instructions (You will have to create an account on their site and log in to view the instructions.)
Where do we go from here?
I've unlocked the bootloader on my Aria, and it says that hboot is at version 1.03. How can I install a custom ROM from here (cyanogenmod)?

Follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14693680.
NB: Read all instructions before starting.
Getting a recovery on to an unlocked bootloader
Okay, I followed those instructions, but they posted the wrong recovery. It's for those who have just run revolutionary, and since my HBOOT was at 1.03.0000, it was impossible for me.
Here's what I did first:
1. I restored to default AT&T FroYo firmware, a download from HTC's Website.
2. I went to htcdev.com/bootloader to start the process. The Aria had to have an HBOOT upgrade from 1.02.0000 (what I was on because of the FroYo restore, although if I had known it then I would've just run revolutionary) to 1.03.0000.
*An aside: I've not had S-OFF before because for some reason I was running a totally different HBOOT. I got this phone used and that's probably why.
3. I unlocked the 1.03.0000 bootloader and realized I was screwed, because I had a) no root b) no recovery and c) no easy way to get back to the other HBOOT or load a recovery.
4. After unlocking the bootloader using HTC's methods (you have to register for a developer account, and they tell you to get three files that they provide: adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, and fastboot.exe) I was at stock FroYo.
5. I found a clockworkmod recovery image for the Aria on the internet. I've attached it for convenience.
6. I booted the Aria to HBOOT, plugged it in, and went to fastboot. It said "FASTBOOT USB" above my options. I already had the drivers installed, so no big deal.
7. Using the instructions in this thread, I was able to flash an alternate recovery. It's easy enough to get the .zip of the recovery off of clockworkmod's website, but I just decided not to do that for one reason or another. I didn't think about flashing a .zip, but it's easy enough. Same procedure.
8. I navigated to the directory I had all my files in from HTC's bootloader unlock process. I ran this:
fastboot flash recovery cwm-recovery.img
alternatively, you can run
fastboot flash zip <clockworkmod recovery for aria>.zip
9. I was successfully able to boot clockworkmod recovery and restore my backup of CM7.2.
I guess, if you wanted, you could flash CM7 or some other firmware with the same method through fastboot without going through recovery. I've not had much experience and I didn't want to brick my phone seeing as I don't have a backup device.

Trying to root using HTC 1.5 with no success.
Hi to all I have tried to root using the HTC boot unlocker with no success. I was using the step by step instructions from HTC evo hacks. I got to the step at the command prompt where I put in the unlock code and I got this : C:\rootevo3dnew>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.152s]
writing 'unlocktoken'...
(bootloader) unlock token check successfully
OKAY [ 0.007s]
finished. total time: 0.161s
The phone screen asking me to unlock the bootloader never came up. Any help would be appreciated. BTW I have rooted at least 7 EVO 3D's. with no problems.
I'm stumped.

See the Guide/flashing Notes in my signature. You need to rerun the currently installed "FULL" Ruu or the the Latest RUU, then the unlock will work.
I did the HTCDev and unlocked it went to thread on downgrade from 1.5 hboot to 1.4 tried that and it did not work. I went to try the wire trick and this is what I get when I try to use the controlbear. the phone connects and goes through process but says the following...
======== ControlBear 0.6 beta for JuopunutBear S-OFF ==========
Starting up......
Connecting to device...
Searching device.....
Found device.....but device has no root!!
Press ENTER to exit.....
Any help would be helpful I have tried superuser but wont install, tried rootevo3dnew, temproot sensation Ect. everything says I need to be rooted.
I am running stock rom that shipped with phone and yes I did updates. I am Sprint CDMA 2.17 rom shipped, 1.5 Hboot. I have flashed roms and modded before but dont consider myself to be advanced. I have done flashing and installing roms with my old HTC Touch pro2 but alot easier on touch pro2 LOL... Please point me in the correct place I have beeen all over from this thread to that one and back and forth and yes I have search threads and I have tried them but still come back to the one with wire trick.. I am 1.5 with S-ON

Ok, let's make sure we know where you are at to start with. When you use the vol and power button to boot to fastboot, does the phone show "unlocked". If not, I think you need to do the htc method again. I have not kept up recently, but I am not sure there is any method other than the HTC method that works every time for 1.5. I have used the HTC method on two phones without a problem, so that is the method I use.
Once you get that far, I used adb to push or flash the twrp image into the recovery section of the phone. Then you should be able to flash superuser via the install menu of twrp. There are threads that have detailed explanations on how this is done.
Yea, I had a bit of a learning curve from my TP2 also, but love this phone!

In my post Ive included a flashable SuperSU zip. What youll need to do is boot to recovery and install this zip. Then reboot. You should have superuser access then.
Still learning this forum so excuse any errors I make. I've spent the last 10 hours trying to fix the mess I created on my wife's Evo 3d. I was able to root my phone and it was relatively easy so I tackled hers as well and have gotten a bootloop I cannot figure out, 10 hours later. I'm on hboot 1.5. I unlocked the phone (using a pretty reliable video), loaded 4EXT Recovery then tried to load roms. Everything worked fine until the rom-loading portion. Since then, the phone loops, but once or twice it made it all the way to the main screen and before I could slide the ring, a read error message appeared next to the bars of service then the phone just completely reboots. Right now, the only thing I can get into is the bootloader and the clockworkmod v4.0.1.4, somehow I lost my 4EXT Recovery. I'm stuck and in dire straights as my wife is going out of town and will KILL me if I don't fix her phone. Please help! BTW, somehow I managed to NOT back anything up (stupidity on my part). Will I be able to get this thing back to stock at least or is it now a paperweight?

Your not bricked by any means. And Im going to guess you tried to boot an ICS rom.. dont. They dont work with hboot 1.5. If you really want to go back to stock run the 2.17 RUU and youll be back to where you started. Another option is to download a GB rom and flash that. Not ICS. If your able to get to the bootloader than you can still load up 4ext recovery so you can flash the GB rom.
Edit: some hboot 1.5 users are lucky and can flash them if they used the correct VM firmware but majority of users have problems.

Thanks, I just tried flashing a rom that has taken it back to stock but I'm still in the bootloop. Should I stop flashing and simply locate the RUU?
22410,
It sounds like the kernel did not flash correctly with 4ext Recovery (next time, make sure u indicat S-on in its settings). I'm not sure if you were just stock 2.17 rooted or not, but use 7zip on your pc to open & extract/copy out the "boot.img" file from the rom, zip, etc you were using and copy it to your fastboot pc folder. Still have the Cwm 4.0.1.4 recovery.IMG file there too right (or the 4ext recovery.img file)? Ok...
- put phone in fastboot usb mode
From PC's fastboot command prompt type:
- " fastboot flash boot boot.img "
(this will reflash the kernel/boot image extracted from a rom)
If your recovery is screwed up:
- " fastboot flash recovery YourRecoveryFilename.img "
(ie: cwm_4.0.1.4_recovery.img or recovery.img, etc as listed in fastboot folder, to reflash a recovery to your phone).
With S-on, to properly enter a recovery for flashing ANYTHING you must:
- " fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img "
(doesn't apply if using 4ext's Smartflash or TWRP's Dumlock settings. But you must have a bootable android OS/kernel first, once the flash is screwed it won't work).
If u have a Sprint CDMA EVO3D/HTC Unlocked & S-on (not Jbear s-Off), then the guide in my signature has more info.
Edit: as NIN said you will likely have problems flashing ICS roms with S-on (hboot version doesn't matter). If u are still unlocked & have a working recovery u can flash any gb Rom successfully after wiping system, data, & cache (or run superwipe zip). Meanrom GB v4.5 recommended.

[Q] Hboot 1.5 Unlock Not Working

So I've been following the progress of the Evo 3D for a bit, decided ok I'll get one, and now am at a loss. I've tried every method posted on this site to try and unlock my phone, the TWRP method, Revolution, HTCDEV method, all of them, and none of them are working for me. With the HTC DEV method, I flash the unlock code.bin and there it stops. Tried running the RUU and I get errors, Revolution doesn't even support my hboot version and TWRP is also for older hboot versions. The only one I haven't tried is a method listed in the Express rom thread, there is supposedly a file called reboot3d.zip but the file isn't there anymore for me to try. I'm at my wits end. All I want is to flash a new rom and recovery, unlock my wifi tether and remove some bloatware, why is this so difficult? Has anyone had any success with an unlockable phone by any means? Please, any help would be appreciated.

the htc device method should work are you sure youre typing in the command this way
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
and are you using linux mac or windows as your computer operating system to do this
I assume u are getting stuck at step 13 with Hboot 1.50 unlocking. Htcdev method is the only method.
What is ur current Sw version. 2.08.651.3, 2.17.651.5, etc?
You need to run the matching full Sw Ruu or a more current one (exe or zip version), then the code will work. The Guide/flashing notes in my signature may help u.

[Q] How do I update to ICS in a rooted phone with HBoot 1.4?

Hi, everyone. I hope someone can answer my questions or point me to the thread with the answer to it. Below is the information for my Spint Evo 3D running stock ROM:
Shooter XC Ship S-off RL
HBoot 1.40.1100
Android 2.3.4
HTC Sense 3.0
Software: Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_2.17.651.5_odex
The last time I did an update of my phone after rooting was early this year. Basically I installed a zipfile provided by a user on this forum (apologize to that user for not being able to credit him) that allows me to get the OTA update on my rooted phone. Now that Sprint released the Ice Cream Sandwich update for EVO 3D, I am looking to upgrade the software again. The main question is...was there a thread for this topic where someone has provided a zipfile to allow updates to ICS for a rooted phone (stock rom)? Would someone please point me to it if they found it (sorry, did not see it)? Second, is the update process the same as before? Do I wipe cache and/or dalvik cache and then just install from zipfile? Any help is appreciated. Just didn't want to brick my phone. Normally I let my sister test things out on her device before I do the same thing but last year she decided to go with Motorola Photon while I sticked with HTC. Help? Thanks.

That's simple mate, but you will lose, recovery and root, I can help get them back, but first you will need to flash this http://cmw.22aaf3.com/shooter/radio/1.09.00.0706/PG86IMG.zip by placing on your sd card root directory and booting into bootloader and then following on screen instructions

Please bear with me as I am more of a casual user who barely have any inkling of why he is doing something, only how to get to S-Off, rooted through developers who provided step-by-step guide for "Dummies who want to Root their Phone". I have been in contact with Ramjet73 who is really kind to answer my questions but I am trying not to bother him too much hence I am trying to pass on any further questions that I have to other users such as yourself. So...thank you in advance.
From what Ramjet73 told me, I can just run the RUU.exe for 2.89.651.2 (Sprint ICS build) since I am S-Off. However he then inform me that I need to download a custom bootloader and custom recovery. This supports your comments that I will lose recovery and root after update? Ramjet 73 suggested a custom bootloader from ENG or JBear. How is that different from the bootloader that you suggested in your reply?
I assume that after I update both the ICS RUU and the custom bootloader, I will remain S-Off and rooted with superuser status and apps such as titanium backup and wifi tethering operational?
As for custom recovery, Ramjet 73 suggested 4Ext Recovery which I assume is 4Ext Recovery Updater (if I want a free version) or 4Ext Recovery Control if I am willing to pay for more options. Now in the past, I haven't really install any custom recovery other than what was installed when I used Revolutionary's tool to turn my phone to S-Off. I believe that installed Clockworkmod which I access when I boot to it using Power+Vol Down. Is Rom Manager the newest equivalent to that? What is your opinion on 4Ext Recovery vs Rom Manager.
So to summarize, I run the RUU.exe for ICS upgrade. Then I flash a bootloader like you recommended in your reply or one of the custom bootloaders from ENG or JBear. Then flash a custom recovery and I am all set? Sorry for all these questions and I hope you can help. Thanks.
I'm looking for a cut and dry answer to this as well. I'll be monitoring this and if I see or figure out anything first ill post here.

I thought I made it as "cut and dry" as possible:
1. Flash the 2.89.651.2 RUU (.exe from Windows or .zip from the bootloader if you prefer that)
2. Flash the JBear Sprint ICS (1.58.5858) bootloader so you can use fastboot commands
3. Flash 4EXT recovery using the "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" command
4. Flash the superuser.zip of your choice or a custom rooted rom from 4EXT
I have more detailed instructions in my guide and a single download with the software you need for each of these steps.
Is there something that you don't understand about these steps, or are you just waiting for someone else to confirm that they work?
Edit: If you are looking for another way to do it you can follow the steps in this post, but you will wind up with the stock 1.58 bootloader and won't be able to run most fastboot commands unless you flash a custom bootloader. It takes about as long to flash the firmware, superwipe and ROM in that post and still flash a custom bootloader as it does to perform the above 4 steps, which I believe give you a cleaner ICS base, but it's up to you. That option will save you from having to reflash recovery.

Hi, sorry if I sound like I am doubting you. Your method are pretty simple. Being a relative newbie who rarely tinker with his phone, I am being extra careful to make sure I understand everything before doing something. In any case, I am going to just do it following your procedure. Just downloaded the QADERSO.zip from your guide. I will follow the 4 steps below. If I encounter any problems, then I hope you or other knowledgeable members of the forum can help out. If everything works out great, I will also post to this thread. Thanks.

No problem.
I was actually responding to sullivan7221 because I thought all his questions were answered in my guide thread and then I saw his post in this thread that seems to be asking the same things. It's no problem if he wants consensus from more people, but I did take exception to his reference to a "cut and dry answer". I know that Samsung and other brands have simpler "one click" processes for rooting because I've used them myself, but I've tried to refine and simplify the root and S-OFF process for the Evo 3D as much as possible, and I tested a "one click" root utility that popped up in this forum a few weeks ago and it didn't work.
I understand that you and sullivan7221 aren't looking for root and S-OFF since you both have that already, but it's still important to use a reliable and consistent method for upgrading to the offical Sprint ICS build, which may not be the easiest.
Good luck with your upgrade!

Well...HELP! I successfully update my phone to ICS (not so hard). Then I hit the wall called "Step 2" and promptly bounced right off on my ass. The first thing I try to do was flash the jb_boot.img through fastboot cmd. I put my phone (which is still S-Off like you said, H-Boot 1.58 with "Locked" all the way up top) into Fastboot then connected my phone to usb, resulting in Fastboot USB. Then I use the command "Fastboot flash boot jb_boot.img". Then the problem happened. It said:
writing 'boot'
failed (remote: not allowed)
From discussions online, I also checked to see if it sees my device using 'fastboot devices" and it seems to recognize it: "HT179..."
How do I unlock my bootloader? What did I do wrong? I have the jb_boot.img and jb_boot.zip from your file and the pg86img.zip that was recommended by the poster above containing a radio.img. Any other way to flash it?
Help?

Well...color me stupid (and an ass) for not reading in depth ramjet's guide. From ramjet's guide, I went to mpgrimm2's "Evo3d(CDMA)HBoot/S-off Differences & Rooting Background Info 9-25-12" thread which eventually lead to ramjet's post with all the different bootloaders available. As suggested, I used JB's ICS bootloader and now in the bootloader page, it no longer say "locked" but "JuopunutBear" now. Onto flashing recovery.

Okay, final update for those looking at this thread. I now have stock ICS, remained S-OFF and have superuser access. Basically I followed ramjet who was helping me out. The first thing that someone in my same position who wants to do the same thing, should navigate to ramjet's guide: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438). Download his file (QADERSO.zip) and unzip it.
1) I turned on USB debugging on my phone and connected to my pc using "charge only" option.
2) I clicked on RUU.exe file in ramjet's QADERSO\RUU folder which then update my phone to ICS. When I access the bootloader, it now said "Locked", then "shooter xc ship s-off RL" and finally "Hboot1-58.5858". So now i have ICS, still S-off but with an upgraded locked bootloader.
3) Then I copied the custom bootloader "PG86IMG_jb_hboot_Sprint_ICS.zip into the root directory of my sd card (the zip file can be found in another of ramjet's post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30014044&postcount=7) and renamed it PG86IMG.zip. Once you go into the bootloader, the zip file will automatically update. Now instead of "Locked" on the top, you should have "JuopunutBear".
4) First remove the previous zip file from the directory. I put the "SuperSU-v0.96.zip" from the QADERSO\Root folder in the root director of my sd card again. then i access my bootloader once again.
5) I went into fastboot and then connect to my Pc with usb. It should now say "Fastboot USB".
6) you can now flash any recovery img that you want. This is where I differ from ramjet's suggestion of 4ext as I did a backup of my system before all of this with clockworkmod recovery.
7) once the recovery of your choice is installed, then just install the supersu.zip file from your sd card and you should have a rooted phone.
Thanks to ramjet for his guide and his help. Now onto my next problem. going back to the state I was before updating to ics. Posting another thread about it. Anyone who can help out, please do. Thanks.

[Q] Help - unable to return to stock, but need to because of broken touchscreen.

Been a lurker for a while, now I need some input if possible. I have a Thunderbolt whose touchscreen is not fully working, there is a strip about 1/4" wide top to bottom that does not respond to input. I rooted it using trter's Thunderbolt Tool and have been running Santod's ICS. When I decided to return to stock I did not read anything and merely ran trtr's tool and used the unroot option. This has me stuck now with a weird state.
Boot screen:
*** UNLOCKED ***
MECHA XD SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.05.0000
MICROP-/
RADIO-1.48.00.0930w_3
eMMC-boot
Jul 19 2011, 14:51:08
4ext recovery is still installed for some reason.
Here are things I have tried:
1. Unroot using trtr's tool - leaves me in a non-booting state with a Security warning and Main Version failure.
2. Used HTCDev unlock and pushed PG05IMG.zip of 2.11.605. This allows me to boot to a seemingly stock ROM.
3. OTA's get pushed, device reboots but OTA's fail to install.
4. Tried recovering Nandroid backups with 4ext, no matter which one I try to restore I get stuck in a boot loop (BAMF SoaB, ICS Santod, Liquid ICS, Multi-source ICS, ICS stock deodex).
5. Tried using 4ext to install the above ROMS directly, along with full wipes and partition formats before each attempt. They seem to install but get stuck in a boot loop on each.
6. Other various combinations of HTCdev, Thunderbolt Tool, FastBoot boot.img pushes, etc. Trtr's tool connecting in booted and fastboot modes fails to unroot or root or change S-ON state.
7. Did step 2 again to get me a working phone (except touch screen problem) until I can figure out WTH is going on.
Current state - the above Boot Screen details, 2.11.605.19 deodexed-signed image, and lucky I have not totally bricked it yet.
Help please? I've googled for the last 3 days and read countless posts and am not sure what to do from here. All I need is to get it back to stock so I can send it back to HTC and get a replacement. I have a working ADB set up and am willing to follow steps exactly or read whatever page you believe I have missed, or call me a dumb n00b, berate me for not reading something, anything... at this point I have no interest in retaining data on the phone or SD card or my dignity, just a stock phone that I can send back.
Thanks all!
Me too
google thunderboltforums How to Fix Security Warning - this is what trtr10 himself recommended to me . It didn't let me post, when I tried direct link.
Your #2 & #6 is similar, but maybe not exactly the same. It didn't work for me, though. And I had to add an adb manual lock step, because you need to be locked before trying trtr10s tool to unroot (or at least locked before it runs the final flash update, which fails for me with Main Version is older. Update Fail!
Also, technically the adb fastboot oem lock yields error #1:
(bootloader) Lock successfully...
FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))
finished. total time: 0.459s
That's major coincidence I have exact same problem, down to dead touch screen strip. I've been trying to get unrooted for a week and was supposed to mail the thing back last Friday . .
Here's hoping a solution gets posted. I don't want to pay cuz the insurance refurb was fail, when my warranty service is supposed to be free replacement and it is stupid hardware failure.
All I can say is trter supposedly updated his tool to work with the latest ota, but its been about a week and he hasn't released it yet.
He did say something about having a problem with his host though.

This is how I fixed the security warning when I first got it, using HTCDev unlock. I also used adb fastboot relock to lock back before trying the tool.

Yep - got that too...
Weird. Guess I'll wait for the new tool and see what it does...
As far as the identical touchscreen issue, this phone is also a refurb, my second with a touchscreen problem. The really weird part is that it works sometimes, particularly after all this work flashing and re-flashing, but I don't think it has anything to do with the ROMS or software, rather the fact that during all this work I am constantly doing battery pulls and SD card swaps and maybe it's because of a flaky ribbon connection or something - if it was not under warranty I would open it up and just try reseating anything I could find inside.
Have you tried to RUU back? It is a way manufacturers refurb or make the software new again without having to figure out what state it is in.
As long as you can get in fastboot it will work... Also could you possibly fastboot an ENG HBOOT? It doesn't show if it's unlocked nor does
it have any of those pink banners up at top.... Those I believe allow you to flash anything you couldn't normally do before... Try that.. Also I
ALWAYS manually push and flash my stuff through ADB and fastboot. It is faster (if you know what you are doing) AND it has better control
over what I am doing. I made a tut on how to flash boot screens (the very first image that comes up when you turn it on) and it is just about
same commands to flash normally stuff.
I run a Linux Box and always use root terminal so I am not certain at what point you would need superuser if any but as follows
#fastboot devices
#fastboot flash zip "name of zip" (no it doesn't have to be called anything specific, it could be called file1.zip)
#fastboot erase [option] /cache /data /system
to force it into the special RUU mode to use HTC's RUU, this is the command
#fastboot oem rebootRUU
Linux too Yes, I can flash via fastboot, I'm concerned about which one to flash though, I don't want to brick...

If you can give me today and I'll send you either the link to download the RUU or the exe itself.
You have the new radios installed and need to downgrade them by going s-off again. Need to do this to avoid main version errors.
The ota's don't install because of the custom recovery.
Backups don't work because your s-on and the kernel can be installed.
You may be able to install santod's ota rom in recovery and install the boot.IMG from the rom (kernel) in fasboot = ./fastboot flash boot boot.img
Relock the boot loader and send it in looking like stock.
There is also a way to spoof your main version and downgrade from ICS to GB Ruu stock. That is posted on another site.

The RUU's to take you back to stock
Thanks to hints from you both, I am back to stock... probably more steps than were needed but it worked for me LOL.
1. Used part of the Revolutionary tool to get S-Off again and let it install CWM over 4ext
2. Re-rooted
3. Installed 2.11.605.9 radio and GB OTA rom
4. Used fastboot to put stock hboot back
Appears to be normal stock now and OTA in progress.
Thank you both again!

that is what the community is all about , right?
Exactly!
One last question - bootloader says ***RELOCKED*** instead of ***LOCKED*** - presumably because I used the HTCdev unlocker at one point... is that fixable or permanent?

you could ALWAYS use an ENG and nobody would be non-the-wiser if you rooted or not! It would look like a developer phone instead..
when it says ***RELOCKED*** it tells anybody and everybody you have been rooted at one point or another (no bueno for warranty)
