Security Measures? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Iv lQQked but either in the wrong place or its not here. Was wondering what's the best possible security measures HTC EVO 4G LTE rooted owners could take for our devices. I ran into sumn called "zAnti" but haven't done further research on said app. Thanks!

So what exactly are you trying to secure?
Best security as far as Android goes is encrypting the device and setting a Pattern Unlock (Make sure you wipe your screen frequently)

Cerberus from the amazon app store (cheaper then play)

My thoughts exactly.

Iv read that ppl w/advance knowledge of computers could piggyback your tethered connection and easily get most if not all information from your phone. Iv tried an app called AdbToggler but its conflicting with superSU or something. You can never be too secured but it helps knowing you can get pretty darn close and how to do so. Lol

Security is always an illusion.
Just be safe about the apps you install.
Try not to install them from 3rd parties unless you really trust them (Amazon, GetJar, a recognized XDA developer).
If a hacker really wants the info on your phone bad enough, they'll get it.
You take risks with rooting a phone, less security is one of them.

zAnti is a security researcher's tool that can do some minor pentesting actions (network discovery, port scans, exploit vuln checks). Think of it like a baby Nessus. It does not really do anything on it's own to secure the Android OS. As far as securing you device, the answer is fairly simple and is the same with anything:
1) Authentication: Secure the lockscreen with at least a PIN or pattern (I recommend a password). Face Unlock is a joke and the basic lockscreen is by no means secure...
2) Install an anti-virus app. I personally use BitDefender, because it has a full suite of options, including GPS tracking and remote wipe.
3) Optionally, use a firewall or manually configure iptables, if you know how.
4) Don't install anything that you are not sure what it does or have any questions as to it's safety.
5) Be aware of exactly what is on your device... all software, scripts, etc.
6) Physical Access == Pwned. If a malicious party has physical access to your device, all bets are off.
As far as security goes, common sense goes a long way.

I just use Avast! both on my laptop and on my phone, it works great!
There's a list of text commands you can send your phone, it's pretty cool! Also with root users there's more options for security.

Want your transformer prime back if it gets stolen? Here's how!

I know alot of people try to protect their devices with lock keys/patterns, while this may keep people from getting ahold of your personal files, what it does not do is provide a means of recovering a stolen unit, actually quite the opposite.
Coming over from a TF101, a lock screen does not protect you as much as you'd think. The first thing a theif will do in the event of a lockscreen is google a way around it. On the transformer this was simple - boot into recovery and factory reset through cwm. After that you're kind of screwed. Since we don't have CWM yet it works in our favor, but you don't want them to have to resort to that to use the device.
What you want to do is let your theif get into your device so you can track them.
Now I know you're thinking, "can't they just factory reset through settings?".
Nope. Install UAG Tab, this isn't a free app ($1.99), but it will protect apps from being opened with a password (pin, pattern, etc). So what you want to do is lock settings, titanium backup, root browsers, superuser, my apps, market, and download managers. I lock anything with root access that can delete things. The reason I recommend this over privacy gaurd and other free apps of this nature is because UAG has more settings, more lock methods, UAG helper (prevents it from being removed by anyone besides you), can remove its self from the app drawer, and has a nicer UI.

Acessing one of those apps results in...
Once you have settings locked down, and any way an attacker can remove UAG. You'll want to download Cerberus.
Cerberus is the master race of stolen device apps. It allows you to do the following.
-Wipe data
-Track gps
-Capture webcam shots
-Sound alarms
-Record audio
-Get network information about the network the device is connected to.
-Last calls sent and received
-Hide from app drawer
-Record video (v2.0)
-others
Cerberus is free to download, but you only get a week of service for free, then you need to buy a key for service (around 4 or 5 dollars, cheap considering all it does). Cerberus requires device administrator privileges, which is why it's essential you lock settings with UAG.
I have cerberus synced with my 2nd gmail account that is on my tablet, so if you do this you'll need to change your email password before you try to recover your tablet in the event of it being stolen so you don't notify your attacker (I also lock gmail with UAG for billing purposes).
Since the transformer prime doesn't have phone service, you can't send commands to cerberus through sms (edit: apparently google talk lets you send sms, but seeing as it needs a wifi signal to receive this it's not particularly useful at this time). This means you need to have alot of wifi connections setup prior to it being stolen because you'll want your theif to access the internet. Here are some examples.
-attwifi (starbucks uses this)
-mcdonalds wifi
-panera bread wifi
-chickfila wifi
-linksys (most of these work on different linksys routers)
-your college campus network
-any other location you visit often, because you're more likely to be in that area to be robbed, and the theif may visit there again.
Keep in mind they won't be able to connect to more networks with settings locked, so this is important. If anyone knows of a way to connect to networks outside outside of settings, tell me and I will add this- because they NEED to be using your device to check their facebooks, while unknowingly broadcasting their location.
I hope this helps.

very nice. there is another on the market for free called Avast!. it will write itself to the /system partition so that a factory reset cant get rid of the app and it hides itself from the app drawers and list after setup. requires root though
I was thinking about that earlier, writing apps to /system/ could protect them even from cwm - but wouldn't the app data be lost in a reset? Similar to how gmail is in /system/app/ but a reset still loses your data.

I don't develop much but I'm in college to get into information systems security.
I used the trendmicro mobile security app when I first started using android, which has similar features to both avast and Cerberus, but costs substantially more at 29.99 a year. I still wish trendmicro would do a port of rootkit blaster or rubotted like they have for windows.
Would be nice if there were a method to receive sms on the transformer prime.

you might as well be talking to me in chinese, dood. i use windows defender (i know, be gentle), i do not know much about computers. and im only slightly better with android lol
but good luck with school man, there should ALWAYS be a HIGH demand for information systems security!
I wrote some scripts in Tasker that do the majority of what Cerberus does, and then some, including the remote camera uploads and some fun things like forcing a phone to call me with speakerphone on, wherever it is. The problem with a WiFi tablet is that you can't track it when it's not connected to WiFi.
Frankly, I think AndroidLost is a better simple solution that's free. And Avast Mobile also has anti-theft options with root support that will allow it to survive a factory reset.
Both of the apps you propose cost money, which is really unnecessary when there are solutions that work just as well for no cost.
Well, it's a combined total of about 7 dollars. I paid around 690 for the tablet with dock, so 1% of that to recover it was an easy bargain.
You can do most of these things in ssh with a remote access client installed on the tablet if you're strapped for cash, it's just more convenient to install an app to do it.
Also I did mention privacy guard which is free, and there are a few free alternatives to Cerberus, I just don't think they're as featured.

rubotted is a botnet detection app and rootkit blaster is a rootkit remover. Generally speaking, botnets and rootkits are things you don't want on your system.

Once again, AndroidLost is as good Cerberus appears to be according to the feature list; thus I'm hardly leaving a car unlocked.
As I've mentioned previously, I secure my phone using a pretty involved Tasker script, backed by Avast with it's root support allowing it to survive a factory reset.
As I've not yet rooted my Prime and my Tasker scripts are highly dependent upon cellular signal, when I got my Prime I fired up AppAware and scrolled through the highest-rated apps until I found the security app that is rated the highest of all that are free, AndroidLost. After installing it and finding that it really is quite excellent, I've stuck with it.
Just because an app is free does not mean it has to be any less effective than one that is not. In fact, I find many free apps seem to be written by people more concerned with making and supporting a quality application than making money.

AndroidLost is fine, but like I said before it's just not as featured. Cerberus allows you to send commands forcing the device to automatically connect to networks in range and also record video, which are just 2 of the features androidlost lacks. You can flash cerberus with rom manager so if your device is reset it's not deleted. LSDroid has developers that are making sure cerberus is optimized for ice cream sandwich, in addition to having tablet support. There's nothing wrong with capitalism and developers getting paid for their work.
Plus you can rick roll thieves.
Without an app like UAG there's nothing stopping someone from flashing a new rom anyway.

The problem remains that you need a wifi connection to receive it :\
So Maybe I don't get the complete picture. But if I were a thief, and I would notice that all the main apps were locked. I would still do a cwm recovery wipe and then there's still no way to trace your stolen prime.... Well offcourse when it's availible. So this is more a kind of temporarily security... Or am I missing something here?
the main app for most people is the browser imo. Even then cerberus and UAG can be flashed with rom manager. The most dangerous move is to give them no other choice but to have to google how to hard reset, rather than to have all your settings secure the way they are on your current rom. As long as they can still play games and get on the browser they should be content thieves long enough for you to file police reports and track them down.
Let's not forget a majority of people who would rob you are like marvin guzman.
It appears that UAG Tab is no longer available on Google Play. Is there anything similar that is as nice or featureful?
Ah, never mind. I found it by looking for the creator's site as listed in their app's package name in the URL link.
being as this was almost 3-4 months ago is there any updated way of achieving this level or greater level of security our is it still all the same procedure and setup?

USSD Exploit - EVO 3D is vulnerable

I just tested this with a harmless test page with my GSM 3D EVO, and, using the stock browser, the USSD code was executed immediately without asking for confirmation (in this case the test page only used the USSD code for IMEI number, so no big deal). I am using one of the popular ICS+Sense based ROMS from the GSM section, but this will probably affect all the ROMs derived from the official HTC ICS update.
Not too concerned because I use Chrome (which is not affected by the exploit), but this is one more reason to wait anxiously for CM10 to be ready.
I ran the test link on this page on my CDMA Evo 3D and it doesn't seem to be affected, but I'm using the default browser from MeanROM ICS 2.6 which is different from the stock ICS browser. My impression from reading a couple articles on this exploit is that it only affects GSM phones.
ramjet73
Just ran the exploit with the default browser in SOS 2.6.1 and it works. Strange since it's based on Mean.
... with Tapatalk 2
Ok so my phone can automatically do a factory reset, bigger deal if you are stock with no backup, that's why nandroids are so important
Signature (Don't ask me for help, couldn't careless if your phone explodes)
On SOS 2.6.1, stock browser and my phone does not seem to be affected.
Checked it through this website http://dylanreeve.com/phone.php
If your phone is vulnerable to the recently disclosed tel: URL attack then this website will cause your phone to open the dialler and display the IMEI code. With other USSD codes it could do any number of other things, including wipe all phone data.
You can find some more information and a simple workaround here: http://dylanreeve.posterous.com/remote-ussd-attack
What does it all mean?!
If visiting this page automatically causes your phone's dialler application to pop up with *#06# displayed then you are not vulnerable. If, however, the dialler pops up and then you immediately see your phone IMEI number (a 14- or 16-digit number) then you are potentially vulnerable to attack.

It seems only gsm phones are effected, unfortunately I am in that category, I believe it would be more of an issue if you run a stock phone.

From the article linked in my post above:
In conclusion, what is the risk to my phone?
The risk is that, upon visiting a website, a USSD code could begin running in the background, which is undoubtedly a serious breach of security. However, you shouldn't panic just yet: so far, no cases in the wild are known where this security breach has been exploited.

It seems that even if our Evo 3d shows up the IMEI code when visiting one of the many test pages, we are quite safe from the really harmful codes.
See here for a more detailed explanation.
I tested the factory reset code from the dialer (after a Nandroid backup, of course!!!) and it does not execute on my phone. :good:
I found this article talking about the samsung gallaxy s3 problem. There is also a link in the article to an app in the play store block the USSD codes from executing at all. I tested the app on my phone and it did stop the USSD codes I tested.

Is there a good fire wall app for evo 3d until such a firewall can be integrated with our phones?
I got an update for avast antivirus and apparently the USSD exploit is patched in the update

[Q] NFC on the DNA

I'm new to using NFC and discovered that apparantly there are issues with transfering data between different platforms (android to windows) and sometimes even between different versions of Android. Has anyone come up with a way to transfer files between different platforms or does anyone have any tips and tricks to make the best use of NFC? I know NFC tags are probably the easiest answer, does anyone know of the best tags or where to buy them? Thanks!

Can you please explain what you mean by issues with transferring data? Like what kind of data? NFC is for like sending contacts to another phone by tapping them together. NFC tags are pretty cool you can program them to do all sorts of thing from enabling WIFI when you get home or disabling it when you leave. NFC isnt for sending files back and forth from phone to phone... as far as im concerned you cant use it from phone to PC.
Sorry not to be clear on that. I'm referring to transferring data such as pictures and videos between android and Windows phone 8. I've also read that some different droid phones have issues doing this as well.

I'm also curious about NFC. I've never used it before and don't see any kind of app or settings regarding NFC in the menus. How does this stuff work?
It's actually easier to use than I thought. All i did was browse to a contact or webpage and then touch another NFC phone. Once you make contact you'll see your screen change at the top to say "touch to beam" just simply tap the screen to send. That assumes that you have NFC turned on in Settings > More. Also be sure to turn on the Check box for "android beam". My problem was that I thought we could transfer pictures and video from android to windows phone but apparently we can't do that yet, only android to android for that stuff.

Ah, the Settings > More part is where I'd missed it. Thanks!

Exchange Email Security Policy - (No Pin)

I've searched the board here and found a few threads about bypassing the security policy when corporate email requires a pin/password code unlock on your phone preventing you from customizing your lock screen. All of the threads I saw where made under forums for other devices and I'm curious if anyone may know if they will work for the Verizon Note II?
I have a corp email account I sync on my phone and it forces me to use a pin lock or password phrase for security. I would like to try and get around this limitation, does anyone have any suggestions?

As the office IT guy. We make you set that stuff for a reason! Be careful as this could be a violation of your corporate use policy.
Make sure and ask your IT department before circumventing this policy.
However I belive touchdown leta you leave this password on just the exchange data on your phone.

thanks for the help, but not only is Touchdown $19.99, according to their website the software will not bypass pin/password security.
Touchdown doesn't circumvent the policy but you only need to enter the pin when accessing anything synced to your device via the exchange service. Everything else is wide open. Personally, I prefer to have all my information locked down via a pin. Too much information accessible on these devices anymore and the minor inconvenience of entering a pin is a small price to pay IMHO

Then I was able to follow these directions located here,

This worked for what you are trying to do. Follow the directions and be sure and download the Java files that are pointed out and it will work just fine. It's real easy to do but make sure you FOLLOW the directions. I have used this method on my GS3 and it worked for it also.

Then I was able to follow these directions located here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117452
This worked for what you are trying to do. Follow the directions and be sure and download the Java files that are pointed out and it will work just fine. It's real easy to do but make sure you FOLLOW the directions. I have used this method on my GS3 and it worked for it also.

As much as I would like to, I KNOW that my IT department would kick my @$$ if I did this. If your phone was lost/stolen, your exposing yourself to some serious issues if there is any sensitive info on your phone.
I just wish they would allow the pattern lock and not force the PIN method at my company.
I'm trying to setup a home VPN and I'm having the same issue. It's requiring I setup a security lock for my phone just to enter any VPN information.
Kind of frustrating because it's not a corporate network I'm connecting to, just my own personal home network. And there's no way for me to do it without some type of security lock. Very lame sauce.

Yeah I agree here, really wish there was a way to disable that feature. I understand that they want to make the device secure when using passwords, but it should be our choice when using that security. The VPN security is annoying as hell for me. I end up removing the vpn when I'm done.
Being the "IT Guy" at my job, once corporate data touches a person's phone it becomes a liability. No matter how you look at it. YES the phone belongs to you but the Email belongs to the company.
We enforce the Pin on our Exchange Servers here and require any employee to sign a contract pretty much stating that they're going to comply with the rules and regulations.
Is it inconvenient for the user, "He'll yeah it is", you know how often I get cussed out? But the fact of the matter is that the company has to protect itself.
Before we put this policy in place, we had an employee that had an iPad he had email and other proprietary materials on it. No Pin and it was a 3G model. He reported the iPad missing 5 days later only because he was wondering why his emails in outlook would go from unread to read with out him doing anything. After investigating it came out about the iPad and we had to remotely wiped it.
Long story short a company can't take chances with its information so if it means inconveniencing it's employees a little to give them the convenience (oxymoron) of using a mobile device for accessing data....then so be it.

Is this exchange email security policy a verizon specific requirement? I just switched from sprint and never had to agree to any permissions that alowed my phone to factory reset without my input before. I was on HTC before but now samsung. Ditto a coworker who is now on motorola and gets the same excessive permissions to setup work email. So many limitations and restrictions since the switch that I would think about going back to Sprint

APP REQUEST: Locate, Control, Wipe A Lost Device

1-My friend lost his phone. I came across Lookout Plan B - an app that can be installed after the fact to locate phone. But it's for GB and won't install on ver. 4+. I was wondering if there is a similar app for 4+ devices and if none request development of the same? I would be willing to pay for such an app and I think it's really needed. Also additional options could include a low level, secure device wipe via sms messages, data retrieval, etc.
2-A self wipe app if passcode is entered X number of times unsuccessfully. This would be similar to Autowipe.

Cerberus is a good one. I use it on 4 devices with the same account.

Hey thanx it looks good, that's what I was looking for. It is perfect short of one simple feature - self destruct if wrong unlock is entered x times. Thanx bud!
