Hi, i was just wondering if anyone would be creating such a Rom? and if anyone would be interested in loading it onto their SGS3.. Coming from a Galaxy Nexus, the pureness of ICS is so smooth and clean, no bloatware or carrier specific apps. But, TouchWiz is nice, colorful and generally easy to get used to.. i was very impressed. I was just wondering if anyone would be interested if that Rom was made available to our LTE Devices.
Cheers! :fingers-crossed::good:
Add me to the wishlist.
This TW isn't too bad, but CM9 would be awesome.
I haven't tried touchwiz yet but I will probably want a clean install.
verizon.
Touchwiz ain't the bad there are some good features already in it, like toggles and battery percentage, for now you can replace them with some aosp apps, that's your best bet
Btw I'm running cap turbo with ics domination theme and it looks sweet netter then nothing

a lot of developers havent received their phones yet, so dont worry, i am sure that peopole will work on cm9, aokp/omega aokp ports from the i9300
Phone is too powerful to let it be pushed aside especially when the gs2 had a huge following. Patience is key this phone will be epic

The problem with AOSP-based ROMs is you lose the (very very few) features of TouchWiz that are legitimately useful... like SmartStay and whatever they call the feature that allows you to pop out videos into a floating window so you can watch while doing other things.
On the Incredible, we had de-Sensed Sense ROMs. They were based on the Sense framework, so Sense "stuff" would work, but they were de-bloated and de-themed as much as possible (at least that is my understanding... in actuality, I never used one of them because I liked Sense).
I imagine someone will eventually come out with a de-TouchWizzed TouchWiz ROM. That is something that I'd be interested in.
^ I think there's a large group who are insterested in the stock google experience, and don't have a need for Sammy's extras.
Edit: just to comment on the OP, I assume most devs will jump to jelly bean. Since (to my understanding) the code is fairly similair, being that 4.1 is an incremental update. I can't wait for some AOSP Jelly Bean!
Pop out video and S Voice have already been made into apps that don't require touchwiz, but I'm not sure about SmartStay.
It'll be great when I can get rid of TouchWiz

I wasn't aware of the video one being made into a separate app. What's it called?
As for S Voice, who cares? Nobody wants that crap.
Yea, I was just wondering.. IMO, i think that all our android phone should come with the option to have a pure AOSP option as well as the manufacturers UI overlay. It would just cut some of the hassle some people go through in theming.. just my two cents.. and I think they're worth every penny..

I'm looking forward to CM9 or CM10 to install on this.. the Samsung branded calendar bugged me but I was able to uninstall that and install the android calendar.apk
if any of you have been getting a random screen flicker while texting, this apk has solved the problem for me. i guess it was a problem with samsung's keyboard code.. it's the pure ICS original keyboard. download and give it a try. let me know your findings.

Is there a link to where I can find that calendar apk? I'm also curious how many stock google apps would work. Probably not flashable/system ones, but rather apks.
Edit: I much prefer Google's stock messaging app, dialer, and contacts/people app.

Me too. I'd love to see pure stock ICS or Jellybean for this phone. Thank God for GoLauncher and GoSMS.
The Samsung Calendar is driving me especially nuts.
AOKP!
Cyanogen is generally the way to go unless you find a different AOSP ROM that doesn't suck, which is pretty rare lol

I had a go to nexify and slim down Modaco's Desiree ROM
So i removed:
All HTC widgets
Rosie
HTC dialer
HTC calendar
HtC stockr
HTC weather
And loads other stuff,
added
modded launchers
Wysie's Contacts
Modded some icons and statusbar drawer
CorpCal
and some more bits and pieces
Modaco et al shall have all cred for the desire ROM.
Have a go and report your findings.
And remember: it's alfa based on a alfa...

is it not possible to get the desire rom and only disable rosie?
but keeping the widgets such as the mail, music player, calender etc...?
also, does this ROM include the nice select text feature similar to the desire rom?

I try to nexify the the desire rom. All htc apps is heavily integrated to the desire frame so i guess its difficult to get them running in stock nexus roms
does Flash Work? also, does "more soon" mean the ROM isn't ready for us to flash yet? I don't see a download link.
i also noticed that desire has better exchange integration. if anyone figures out a way to get the exchange apk or mail apk or whatever controls that onto a cyan rom that would be great.
I'm definitely interested in what you come up with!
Why not just use a homescreen replacement...like Home++ so you don't have most of SenseUI? The apps aren't drastically different, the biggest difference is the homescreen imo.

Maybe i will post a barebone stipped ROM if anyone wants it.
I really want a rooted stock ROM (CM, Enom, TheOfficial, etc.) but I love the camera & music apps from the Desire ROMs. I've been trying all day to get them working on CM, but have failed epically. Anyone wanna throw in some help on this?
What I've Tried (& Failed):
Copy the right libs from the Desire ROM to the stock one. Used the list of libs we needed to port the music/camera apps from the old Hero builds to the stock G1 ROMs.
Ideas:
Something with Smali/Baksmali.
+1 For this, as the Camera on desire IS AMAZING! Seriously, much better then the original. Same with the music app, as it actually reads id3 tags correctly.
Is there any way to get there widgets to because there a lot better then stock

This request has been asked for already:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=638106&highlight=camera
I can't find the posts at the moment, but I believe there was discussion about this pulling the HTC Camera app out alone, but that it was so integrated into the core components that doing so would be a MAJOR undertaking (for not just pulling out all the necessary pieces, but also having to put patches in for those pieces on whatever ROM you do use).
I'm in the same boat, the Desire Camera is far superior to the stock camera and would LOVE so it as its' own app (or ported to CM5 ROM).
If someone would compile ldd, then you could easily run it against the camera app to find all the library dependencies. Then lump all the libs into their own dir (so as to not overwrite stock libs), then launch the camera app from a shell script where you set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/desire/libs and it should run. It may consume 100 megs, but it would run
Its possible, but you need to use baksmali and smali to find out what the app needs to run....its possible...but not easy...
/joins the seemingly cult following
+9000 for this idea.
Tunewiki is the best music app in my oppinion, but I wouldn't mind the camera app.
+8000 from me
I don't mind the stock camera, but I do prefer the HTC Music app. So I would love to see this.
On a down note, I recently read something over at MoDaCo that Paul had written about porting Desire to the N1. Most, if not all, of the issues he is having are caused by Sense calling upon many additions to the kernel, which is heavily modified and therefore very different from the vanilla kernels floating around.
He mentioned the camera app using certain things in or created by the Desires kernel, which is why I highly doubt we will be porting the apps any time soon.
oh yes, i would LOVE the desire camera app!
i had the same idea
i spent all the afternoon trying to install the HTCCamera.apk, plus the according libs, but it looks that something is lacking in the kernel or in the framework (i also injected all the htc relative jars in the /system/framework unsuccessfully)
I Hate sense, but it would really be nice to have the camera, the music, and also the contacts widgets.
Maybe we can try the reverse : use the modaco rom and patch it with cyanogen's kernel.
The only thing why i don't use modaco alpha rom is :
1 - i hate sense (really )
2 - i need a lot of memory and i miss the 2nd bank patch

Not quite how it works on Android - Java, man, Java
What i ended up doing in this scenario is just running the MoDaCo custom rom, but disabling and deleting Rosie and its widgets, along with the other apps like footprints which i never use. It runs the stock Launcher2 for home, but i still have the Desire's contacts, camera, music etc.
From what i hear, you can still install some of the stock .apks to replace ones you dont like from desire (like stock Mms.apk rather than the one that ships in Rosie roms)
Works for my needs (or desires anyway... no pun intended.)
Give it a whirl by going into your apps list, selecting rosie, then clearing defaults. When you press home next it'll ask you if you wanna use home or Rosie, with an option to make it default. Could be close enough to what people are looking for, and in any event its far easier to mod Desire to be more stock than vice versa. Most of these are even available as options in the kitchen as well.
EDIT - you'll need to pull the launcher2.apk from an earlier build, as it appears it isnt included in alpha 17 onward...

Huh? What is that.
I'm running king Kang now, but there are some things that I miss from the i717 roms.
I miss the s pen support, the screenshot feature, the 4g network indicator and not to mention the premium apps made for the s pen. I'm sure there are a few more things I'm missing that I forgot...
But AOKP is so customizable that it's hard not to use it.
So I was wondering, is there a ROM out there that would fit my "wants"?

You could run the fj version of the official ics.
Unless it's based on a Samsung ics, it's not going to have spen extras. But there are apps like memo which can replace a bit of the app functionality you may be missing. Anymore it's often included in ROMs.
Just try a few and use the one that suits you. Good luck.

I just installed the AoCP rom and I really like it. I miss the Samsung video player haven't found anything close to as good. And I miss the samsung calendar, I really like how it displayed event alarms. I'm teetering between sticking with AoCP and just ignoring those apps that are missing or going back to the ICS rom I ran that had them. It really sucks the Samsung apk's can just be flashed, or someone who has talent ports them. I'll admit a lot are just bloat, but especially the video player is really nice.

Try Dice player from the market. I've been using it for almost a year now and there is not one video that plays on Samsungs player that Dice won't play. I have run into a select few that Samsung won't play that Dice players still plays! To me it's the best video player out there, I have yet to see a video that it won't play. Ok, I'm done threadjacking now!
I was wondering the same thing because I love the aokp and cm9 customizations, but flash player runs better on the stock based ROMs. Every time I go to full screen player and back out of it, my links don't work and my video stops and other weird things. But I think I'll give the hybrid a try.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as the OP. I used CM7 and AOSP ROM's on my OG EVO 4G and simply loved them. However on my GNote, I like the SPen and the functionality it provides...as well as SMemo and SNote. I know I can use Papyrus (which I already have), but the ability to capture a screen shot (don't care how I do it) and draw on it (without sending it to a notepad)...is something I have a hard time parting with. I use this feature on G+ /Twitter and when sending pics out via MMS or email. Damn!!! I flashed AOCP and it was fan-effn-tastic!! They included a memo and notepad I think...just couldn't draw on a pic from a screenshot. Please correct me if there is something I'm missing. DAMN!!!
I know most users are the reverse of me, but here's my puzzle.
I love AOKP in almost every way except... I really love the TouchWiz contacts/dialer (go figure). I use the swipe left to sms/right to call at least once a day. To the point that I went back to Shostock3 (and its battery-heavy ways) so I could have this core functionality back.
In the stock SGS2 thread, someone asked the question of whether there's a contacts/dialer replacement that acts like TW contacts/dialer and nobody responded.
So I'm asking here... Does what I'm looking for exist?
EDIT: refined title

When I open a contact in exDialer to SMS, it opens the default messaging app... But if I start out in the messaging app and want to call the person, then I am SOL. The nice thing about the TW integration is that any time you interact with a contact (from any of the three apps) is that the swipe left/right thing works.
As a result, I am now looking for a messaging replacement app that can also do the swipey thing.
Far as I know there isn't anything like that for AOSP, but if you DO find something that works the way you want it to let us know.

Not sure I get it. Are you talking about the AOSP Messaging app? There's a call button in the title bar. Furthermore, if you press on the contact icon, a popup appears, and you have the option to do a lot more than call them. You can send an email, map their address, etc.

You could try flashing shostock3 (that's what I'm on) and backing up the dialer with Titanium (and the messaging & contacts apps, whatever you need) and then reflashing your current rom and restoring the app without data. There probably wouldn't be any data to restore at that time anyway.
But, I have no idea if that will work, or if it will give you problems or even brick your device (which I doubt would happen), but there was a thread where someone did something like that with the Touchwiz task manager. I think they were running a TW ROM on an N7 and went back to a AOSP ROM and it worked perfectly.
Good luck. I personally am a big fan of touchwiz, especially with a nexus style blue theme to the toggles and other system colors instead of green. Samsung has some pretty awesome user friendly stuff like the swipe to call/text, the quick toggles, even the s planner calendar app stands out.

Yeah, I understand that functionality exists, but that's not what I'm looking for. It's less elegant (for me). I'd rather have a certain specific one-touch experience rather than the two-click experience.
And TouchWiz apks, as far as I've read, don't work on non-Samsung kernels.

Yeah, I understand that functionality exists, but that's not what I'm looking for. It's less elegant (for me). I'd rather have a certain specific one-touch experience rather than the two-click experience.
And TouchWiz apks, as far as I've read, don't work on non-Samsung kernels.

Apks have nothing to do with kernels

I'm not sure this is possible. If you want TW functions you should run a TW based rom. Even if the rom doesnt have the TW keyboard, if it is based on TW you should be able to restore from titanium or just get the apk file and install.
If you want a good keyboard for swyping use the "swype" keyboard for purchase on the market. I really like the market swype keyboard bc I find it a lot more accurate (this may be a useless suggestion as I used the TW keyboard maybe once before repalcing it so i dont know what functions it brings that people like).

Tw keyboard is similar to Android kb... themed differently. As far as word predicting or how close or precise, Swype is champ, Android is second, Samsung comes last

i do like how the TW keyboard has the numbers above the qwerty to avoid long pressing or changing "pages"

I do not have a Samsung TW Keyboard working on AOSP, but a quick Google/XDA Search resulted in a lot of information and downloads of success stories on different devices and carriers. Some reverse-engineering may be needed. There are many Samsung TW Keyboards from other devices (like the S3, S2, etc) that have been made available for AOSP-Based ROMs. They might not be the S4 Keyboard, but if you want something ready-to-flash or ready-to-install, you might try them. Or start with a deodexed apk, locate any dependencies needed for the Keyboard to function, and try your luck with an app like ZipSigner.
I would first:
1- Download a Samsung TW Keyboard that has already been ported to AOSP
2- Download the Keyboard for your device/build
3- Compare them and try and find out what big differences there were
4- Try and apply those differences to your Keyboard
5- Run some Trial/Errors

Just because it is something that can be figured out by searching. I mean that in the nicest way. No pun intended.
It seemed from the question that the OP was asking for a method. And there are plenty of tutorials on Porting and Reverse Engineering (AOSP->TW/ViceVersa/.apks/Apps/Etc./Etc.).

Nice post. I did do a search and even did google searches but all of the ports I found didn't work. I should have mentioned that in the OP.

The TW Keyboard has too many Touch Wiz dependencies. I like it as well. Try Kii keyboard from the market. It has the numbers on the top row and all kinds of other neato features to make you forget about TW keyboard.

I second this. I have used the Kii Keyboard for a long time. Its the best money I spent on a keyboard. I personally prefer the new Google Keyboard from the PlayStore, but I always keep Kii installed just in case I ever need to use the top number row for something. Works great on the S3, S4 and Note2.

Purchased and have been using ever since. Thanks for the help, guys!
Don't know much about this so this could be WAY off.
but I DO know to get AOSP .apks on TW you need to compile the AOSP .apks with TW sources, maybe try doing the opposite. compile TW .apk with AOSP sources, no idea if even possible, just trying to help.
