I have recently purchased an S3 and I am quite happy with it except it is showing one unread message and when you open messages there is not any unread messages.
I have managed to clear it by rebooting my phone and then when I receive another SMS it goes back one unread even though I have read.
How do I clear this annoyance.

Are you using the stock messaging app? I bet you're not... If you have a third-party SMS app, the stock messaging app will continue to register and notify about new messages received, even if they've been read in the third-party app.
To resolve this, just switch off notifications in the stock messaging app.
This is a bug in the firmware, it has been fixed you just need to wait for the OTA to be pushed to your phone

No. This is a problem with some S3s. Check this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705015
My colleague had this issue and I played around with it on Friday without success but she says that the issue was resolved on Friday and she has received several messages and calls but the 1 is not stuck on the icon after reading the message anymore. I am at a loss as to what I did...

wife having an issue with stock text messaging...read messages showing unread...help

Wife is having this problem with the stock text messaging program. She has messages that she has read that are still showing blue which I am guessing is unread and not sure why that would be happening? Anyone have any ideas? I am not having this problem with my phone.
The contact name is in blue still after the message is read and replied to...any ideas?

text messages loading time

Whenever I try to compose a new text message and I try to enter the recipient from my address book, or when I actually send the message, or open a text message thread...there is a lag of about 30-40 seconds. I used to have no limit on the amount of texts per thread, but I have took it down to 200 and I still get this lag. Why is this?
I'm stock by the way on the latest software update.
Sorry if this thread is a duplicate, I tried searching.
BTW I use mighty text and I have most of my contacts facebook linked.
so I take it that it's normal for a text message thread, no matter how long it is(10 messages or 200) to take half a minute to load....ok.

I think this is the same problem I'm experiencing ... Happens with my contacts too. Check out a thread called log all of a sudden ... There were a few responses but no solution

I'm talking about the stock message app. Mighty Text is an app that allows you to texts from your phone using your laptop.

Incorrect unread SMS count

I use Hangouts as my default SMS app in my Nexus 5.
No matter what I do, all the themer widgets seem to think I have 2 unread SMS messages. I don't.
Is there any way I can get the themer widgets to show the correct unread count?
I've had the same problem a few times. You do actually have to unread messages somewhere. You may have archive them or deleted them.

What RED said is correct, also check that it isn't showing SMSs from other accounts.

I noticed this as well. It seems to be due to the Android SMS Messaging app on my phone showing the message as unread even though my current default sms app (hangouts) has no unread messages. the only way I have found to clear the unread flag is to set it the original sms app back to default then click on the message and read it then set hangouts back to deafault. Or once I've determined which thread is the culprit (via opening the default app, then going to hangouts and deleting that thread it clears the flag. Not ideal, since there's a reason for keeping history, but it keeps my OCD nature of having an unread message from having a fit.....
I would be interested if anyone has found a fix for this as opposed to my work around.

Thanks for the update! We'll pass it onto our devs. For now we don't have a fix, but an update should be released this week that may help.
