I currently have stock GB version 2.3.5. I plan to flash CF-Root kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery and flash ICS. If I make backup of my current version will I be able to revert to it once I install ICS? Or will flashing ICS flash a kernel which is incompatible with GB?
Yes if i make a backup of 2.3.5 i can flash a ICS rom and from there even if i flash a custom recovery for ICS i can still restore my 2.3.5 backup its "universal"

So will I need to flash another recovery after flashing ICS or will ClockworkMod Recovery still be there?
Clockworkmod will still be there no matter what 2.3 or 4.0 rom you use just that every rom tend to have their own "themed" version of cwm. but they all still backup and restore the same way. Just a note, for the SII the recovery is part of the boot.img (had to get this in my head the first time as my old phone was different

I'm not 100% sure what that means so do I need to take some extra steps because of it?
Erm if you dont know what it means then its ok (it was meant for those that has prior experince)
Just to add, if you go stock using Odin, cwm won't be there until you flash cfroot or similar.

So let me see if i understand this correctly. From what i have read, it looks like i cant install CWM recovery without installing a custom Kernel? So me backing up my stock set up is pretty much out of the question? So everytime i wish to install a different custom rom i am essentailly reinstalling CWM recovery as well?
How can i backup my stock set up and restore it if i screw something up, or install a rom that i am not happy with? I am coming rom an epic 4g on sprint and it was different with that galaxy phone.
Flash a CF Root kernel that matches your firmware, create your near stock b/u. This will be your point to fall back on. 99.99% of ROMs you flash will include a kernel, that also has CWM, it may be a different version but they all work the same, for the most part. The majority of kernels include CWMr 5 or higher.
You'll always have the option of restoring your "stock" b/u so long as you don't delete it. Titanium b/u is the ticket to back up all your apps and their data rather than having to extract those apps/data from a CWM b/u.
You only have to root once. The easiest way to unroot is to flash a stock firmware. Flashing a stock kernel back on after you've rooted will replace CWM recovery with stock recovery, but you'll remain rooted. Probably doesn't address all your questions, but you've got a start.

forgot to mention that i am rooted now. using oneclickroot.
Just flash a custom kernel with CWM recovery installed inside.
Such as:
- Siyah
- Phoenix
- Ninphetamine
etc...
DO NOT FLASH STOCK KERNEL AS IT WILL DELETE CWM RECOVERY. ROM MANAGER DOES NOT INSTALL RECOVERY ON YOUR PHONE.

is it as simple as using Odin, clicking PDA and flashing the downloaded kernel? and there should be no side effects from using a custom kernel such as Siyah?
Getting back to 100% stock is easy, odin flash a rom.
CF root *is* the stock kernel, just with some bits added (CWM recovery and root).
CF root with your stock rom is defo the safest bet.

Yes if you get the kernel in odin tar file, otherwise flash CF root and use CWM recovery to flash the zips.

Basically, you flash a zip the same way you put on CM9. Find the ROM you want, make sure you are running the right kernal, usually entropy's, put the new ROM's zip file on your SD card, boot into clockwork recovery, wipe data and cache, insall zip from SD, reboot.
You may want to back up data beforehand with an app like Titanium backup.
Edit:unable to return to stock

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you should do. Someone more experienced will know.
if the 5.0 are anything like the 4.0's then flashing to CM7 or CM9 converts the partitions, you have to use heimdall to flash the stock recovery with a pit file to recreate the stock partitions. check the development threads for a "5.0 stock recovery" thread and follow directions, hope you have a good backup of your stock partitions, a CWM backup doesn't backup your efs and its been converted by flashing CM9, so if you don't have an EFS backup your gonna probably lose your lockscreen and power menu's, at least thats what happens on the 4.0, I imagine the 5.0 is similar.

Sorry for the noob question, but i really need some assurance before i proceed
My goal is to install CM10 for S2.
So in order to do that i need to:
1. Download ClockworkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4 and flash the kernal via odin
2. Download SuperOneClick to Root my S2
3. Proceed with CM10 flash -> then Factory reset.
So that's about it right? backup has been done. anything else i need? What about modem?
So pointer would be great. I'm kinda rusty, left the android scene for years.
PS - My S2 is stock, no mods.

Quite right.
You need CWM recovery to flash CM10.
The easiest way to get it IMO is to flash a rooted kernel which contains CWM recovery.
You can use SiyahKernel or PhilZ-cwm6 kernel ... it's your choice and depends on your current ROM version.
After flashing the kernel, your phone will be rooted and you will have CWM recovery.
You should create a nandroid backup in CWM recovery - just to have a complete system backup of your current ROM.
Then you can flash the CM10 in CWM recovery - stick to the installation instructions of the ROM. You may have to wipe data/do a factory reset.
Good luck !
So if i were to use PhilZ-cwm6, i dont have to use superoneclickroot? Correct?
- so no need for odin right?
About choosing PhilZ kernel, mine is XWLP7, so, i would download XWLPZ kernel? Correct?
im nearly getting it LOL.
You don't need superoneclickroot when using PhilZ-cwm6, it's already rooted.
Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270 and search for XWLP7 and download that kernel (I'm not sure XWLPZ is close enough in version, but as there is a XWLP7 kernel there, I would use that.)
superoneclick is obselete. If you have CWM then theres no need for Odin. You get CWM with almost all rooted Kernels. If you aren't currently rooted however, you wont have CWM. Imo, the best way to go from no root > root is to flash a rooted Kernel via Odin, and yes your kernel version should correspond to your ROM version.
I'm used to just rooting and then using ROM Manager to get CWM on other devices.
(Or using ODIN and a .tar)
I'm only seeing .zips for Kernels/ROMs which as far as I know are only installable by a (custom?) recovery.
Can I just use the built in recovery to flash a Kernel/ROM?
However for i777 I see everyone is saying ROM Manager leads to a lot of problems.
I've seen that for s2 the kernels come with CWM (or a custom recovery) attached to them already?
I'm just seeing old and outdated posts, and the stickies don't make it terribly clear either.
So after rooting, what would the next steps be if I wanted to install CWM?
I assume Odin/Tar method? Can someone show me the latest tar to flash?
After that I could use CWM as usual to install a ROM such as CM 10(.1) or Task650 AOKP correct?
E:
Now I'm seeing inside of the .zips there is a Zimage (for this Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592228) and that I can safely flash that file using ODIN?
Would this also (in most cases/for most Kernels) also contain CWM or some type of custom recovery?
like the stickies explain, recovery is packed with the kernel. if you are rooted already, use mobile odin to flash the zimage. otherwise, use a tar file with regular odin to flash a custom kernel....
Okay so after root, use Mobile ODIN to flash the ZImage file found in the .zip of any kernel file?
Do ALL S2 kernels come with a custom recovery?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592228 I believe that

Okay thank you, just used to i747 things so this is very new to me.
What would be the proper order to move from a ICS to JB?
Flash ICS Kernel.
Flash JB ROM via CWM.
Flash JB Kernel (If I wish to use a different one that what the ROM comes from).
And just to double check, I just flash the ZImage via Mobile Odin and I'm golden?
Once you got cwm you are good to go.
Following intructions from rom's op make it safer.
Usually factory reset + flash rom.

I don't know if it still bears true or not but AFAIK, if your currently running GB OS, then you need to flash GB kernel, not ICS kernel and vice versa.

As far as recovery goes, it shouldn't make any difference. An ICS kernel with a GB rom will not boot, but it will still boot into recovery.
Correct. If you're just flashing a kernel to gain cwm recovery it doesn't matter as you're not booting into the OS with that kernel installed.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_i777 this method worked perfectly for me
Do. Not. Use. Rom. Manager.
the above method seems to initially just boot cwm, i didn't try to flash the zip again in cwm to see if it sticks.

Yupp it states that but you can flash another kernel from cwm
Hi ,
I am currently having 4.1.2 official on my SGH-I777, recently rooted it and have mobile odin lite installed.
Need CWM recovery installed so that i can flash SuperNexus2 rom. So i have downloaded recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.0-i777.zip file from clockworkmod dot com website . Can i flash it directly from the stock recovery which i have now? or any other safe method you can suggest.
In some thread, there was a mention to flash boot.sys file from other kernel using Mobile odin which will get cwm installed.
If this is the way to go, please suggest a safe Kernal. I am just looking to get a stable daily driver for now, as i dont have an alternate phone.
Thanks in advance
the stock recovery isn't good for much, so no, it won't allow you to directly flash the cwm recovery.
Once you're rooted and have mobile odin (&the odin i777 kernel) installed, you're halfway there.

If i flash boot.img extracted from AJK, will i be able to boot into the stock 4.1.2 which i already have, or should i directly start proceeding with CWM and the new ROM, just want to make sure before i start.
...side note warning... Do not use Rom Manager with the i777. If ya do u could possibly brick ur phone. There is a Stickied thread in this forum warning of this.
....no back to the regularly scheduled topic.

I think the nomswap version will allow you to boot to stock 4.1.2, but I can't promise that, I've never tried it. You should prepare as though you won't be able to return once you hit [flash firmware] from Mobile Odin. It's all covered in the guide.

Yes, if you use AJK v4.8 NoSwap you will be able to boot into your 4.1.2 system.
Also, if you are new to the I777, you should know that the recovery, including CWM recovery, is a part of the kernel, and not in a separate partition, so it can not be flashed separately from the kernel.
