Replacing Messaging App - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I know how to change the defaults that is not my issue.
I came from the first Galaxy S running crayogen ICS and the messaging app on that is way better than the Samsung one, it just sucks.
I tired installing the apk from the crayogen rom but I keep getting an error.
When I try I get the this is a system app are you sure you want to continue and replace it. I then select install and just get a error Application not installed.
So I used root explorer, found the default samsung app, renamed it, copied over the other app with the same name and installed it from within the system folder and it worked, so it is now working but it doesn't look the same as it did on my old phone.
Any help?

This is the XT9 message app with dark background thy this install just like you did b4

couldn't get that one to work for some reason, did the same thing and kept getting unable to install error

Try Go SMS Pro?

I use GO SMS Pro also and its awesome! You are correct...The stock messaging app is god awful!

I use Handcent and it's way better than stock.

Instead of renaming the secmms.apk, make a copy and pt it on your sdcard. Delete it from your system/app folder, push the new apk to system/apk.
Reboot. It should bout to the Android is updating screen if it worked.

Thanks for that, but it still didn't work it defaults to the app but it still isn't working correctly and doesn't look like the old app I use to have and when I open settings it always crashes.
What I have done is disabled the default messaging app in settings, installed GoSms and using that as the default. Its not bad and better to adapt to but still miss the CyanogenMod messaging app I had on the I9000
Thanks for the replys

Have you modded the app at all? You might have to sign it before it will install/work
Name it Mms.apk

Not receiving picture texts.....

Hello all, I was hoping someone may have run into this and might could give me some feedback.
I have my phone rooted, and use Handcent for texting. I have no problems sending pictures......and up until recently, I've had no problems receiving pictures either. At first I thought it was just going to be iPhone users, but have since experienced the problem getting pics from various phones and carriers.
iPhone4 - Verizon
iPhone3 - AT&T
Samsung Eternity - AT&T
There are a few others as well. I have disabled the original messaging app, and only use Handcent. I've had no problems until the past couple of weeks. I am wondering if maybe it isn't an update issue from Handcent......I know it has manually updated a couple of times in the past few weeks.
Anyone have any suggestions?
What do you mean when you say you disabled the original app?
What ROM/kernel are you using?

Firmware 2.1update1
Kernel 2.6.29
I rooted simply to remove bloatware, I haven't changed to any of the different ROM's or anything.
I deleted MMS.apk. I wanted to try to reinstall it, to see if maybe one of the Handcent updates caused the problem somehow, after I deleted the MMS app......but I can't get it to install. I downloaded the MMS.apk on my desktop, and open it through MyFiles. I've done a few apps this way, no problem.
MMS.apk you have to push to /system/app
You cant install it like you would a normal apk.

You can install it with ESFile Explorer if you are rooted. You can find it on the market for free. You'll then need to find a mms.apk place it on your sdcard.. then using ESFile copy the apk and place it in system/apps/
Another option would be to download GeekSMS.. it runs on its on without the mms.apk. I've tried it and it worked fine for me.

Ok, I have it on my SD....and long press -----> copy, but can't figure out how to paste it into RE.
Sorry for being such a noob.
Ok, figured out how to paste in RootExplorer.
Now that I did that, I ran MMS after pasting......it still won't install. It boots like its going to install the app, then I get a message saying it didn't install. I got the same thing when I just copied the APK into MyFiles and tried installing it.
What am I missing?
You're not supposed to try and install it. You move it into the /system/app and then it should show up in your app drawer.

[Q] IS it possible to switch dialer apks

I want to switch dialer apk from one rom to another should just use take files and place them in rom from my computer using win zip then re flash the rom? is there an easier way... sometimes it doesn't take...
Take the dialers...
The original one located in system/app
Rename it from dialer.apk to dialer.apk.bak
Then put the other dialer in, system/app
Reboot see if it works fine.
If it doesn't you'll get fcs.
If it works then it works.
If it doesn't...
Go back to system/app
Delete the dialer.apk you got from another rom.
And the original you had remove.bak from it and reboot..
I suggest you only switch apk from vibrant roms, using others like... Htc dialer probably won't work and sometimes you may have to re flash rom.
P.s.
Use root explorer to do the renaming moving etc. it's a paid app, worth it!
If you want a free, use astro file manager

I have the one with the call recording feature but it is useless. Does your phone really record phone calls ?
The only thing mine does is create empty audio files. so I had to replace them (phone & DialerAct.) with the ones from an earlier Bionix ROM.
i never thought of using bionix...I like the the themed dialer..with rec...

[Q] AOSP MMS App

Has anyone gotten this to work successfully on a stock-based ROM? AOSP Flavored Nonsense seems to have died on the vine, and none of my tricks with adb can seem to get this going on a BAMF based ROM.
Anyone have any luck with this?

This is in the complete wrong section but I'm going to help you anyway.
Download my File Mms.apk, place it on your Sdcard.
Remove HTC Messaging app via ADB or file explorer
Push Mms.apk to /system/app via ADB or file explorer
Then go to sdcard and INSTALL the Mms.apk
Reboot Phone
I'm not sure if pushing it is necessary before installation, but it's what always works me for. Remember this will remove your HTC Messaging app so back it up first, and if you want it back just follow these instructions except with the different apps.
Lemme know this works!
Thank you very much! The push then install was what I was missing!
Sorry for posting in the wrong part of the forum, won't happen again.

Aren't there problems with MMS not actually sending when using the stock app? I'd love to use it, but I remember reading about these issues

When I send it from the gallery it crashes, but I reopen it and it sends.
Shrug?
But yes, I actually removed the htc app and dropped in the stock one with root explorer, did a fix permissions, rebooted, then installed. All my messages were there, didn't need to restore them, and it worked like a champ.
MMS is acting flaky I got it to send once and now nothing. Going to try the AOSP Gallery and see if that fixes it.
Okay, install 3dGallery, and start a text message in Messages, hit menu, go to attach, picture, select gallery, select the picture and then it will send.
At least so far that seems to work.
Not quite the out of the box AOSP experience, but getting closer.
Thanks for all the help everyone!

ASOP Messenging and

So anyway I can get asop mms apk to work with working mms? Cause I tried to with my LG thrill and failed with it. Nothing ever worked. I'd prefer the stock android messagsing app. But iI don't want to flash a Rom. I know I have to root. But I don't want to flash a rom just for that.
Also Is tthere anyway to change in the framework like where its like froyo everything is vannila like a theme I know it wouldn't be something simple but would be nice

You have to be rooted. The mms.apk is a system app so, to get the apk to install requires you to override.
Yes I know that!!!!! I have known this since I got my first android begenning of last year....... I was asking where to obtain one that will work completely with mms working as well

I accomplished this a while ago but I can't remember how I did it! I attached the apk I used, but I don't know if I installed normally or if I deleted the old mms.apk and used this one? Here's the code for getting rid of the old apk and replacing it with this one, which is what I THINK I did.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
su
cd /system/app/
cp mms.apk mms.apk.backup
exit
exit
adb push mms.apk /system/app/
Let me know if this works
EDIT: If you want the stock android messaging, with no themes or anything, look here for the apk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220698
The attached file is themed black, which I think is cool, but the stock is there if you need it.

You need root explorer, then go into system/app give write permission top center and rename ones you don't want .back and move it to a safe place in case you ever want to swap them in future.

Did you install mod from an ics Rom. JB changed in that camera is integrated with gallery, only works if gallery is active.
The odex file below is part of the app structure so they go hand in hand. If you remove they go in pair.
In ics samsungcamera and secgallery are the apps. These are probably the mods and something like gallery4 not sure in JB cuz I don't have it.
I'm root and when I remove bloatware I use Titanium Backup I first freeze watch how phone behaves then delete after a few days. If you remove anything put it in sdcard somewhere safe and note permissions before you move it.
