out with the photon. - Motorola Photon 4G

I love my photon, but there is that pesky unlocked situation. i recently switched internet providers and had to use 3g for a few days since im running the gummy rom. after the 3 days im ready to switch. i need 4g and the abilty to tinker with my device. this has been a great phone, but motorola has let everyone down. i will be switching back to htc starting with evo 3d. Thanks to the devs and photon members that have made hacking this phone fun and easy. im gonna miss it.

I feel your pain, but good things come to those who wait. I imagine youll hate your 3D after being with the Photon. Seems to be the general consensus. Bad software is fixable, bad hardware isn't.

3D? are you serious? I'd get original before 3D if that is your opinion. But just like other poster, Im waiting it out!

My Photon still does 4G just fine. Honestly, I've never understood why people moved from 4G to 3G-only ROMs.

I have an original EVO (now daughter's), EVO 3D (wife's), and Photon (mine).
Photon has clearly better radios. Otherwise, all are nice phones.

i don't understand why people need 4g so desperately.
the only thing motorola lacks is updates and unlocked bootloaders.

i already have the 3d. it works good and they have great roms. i need 4g when i cant use wifi. its an unlock issue. it shouldnt matter if i want to unlock it. evo was the best phone ive ever had. for a hackalicious person like myself. the 4g roms on the photon just arent near as good as installing kitchen sink. i want unlocked options on a 4g device. btw gummy is the only rom that works perfect mms etc.

theres nothing to wait for, motorola will never unlock the bootloader. i dont want stock ics. i want maxed out kernel pushing the device.

Forum someone that would on phones all day I can say that the 3d isn't nearly as well made as the original evo. I wish they used all the money they put in that parallax display for better build quality. I'm interested to see how policy changes at Motorola now that they are Google owned but I don't hold much hope that it will affect the current handsets.

Because it's there, like ICS ROMs. It's a nice perk, but vs. 3G? No big deal. I mean, you don't see anybody posting speed tests about how much faster it is. My understanding is that it isn't much faster, just more stable on video. So maybe it's 3MBit as opposed to 1MBit or something. But again, nobody with 4G is bragging about the speed with solid numbers; until they do I wouldn't worry about it. Also, it's in what, two cities in America? Los Angeles and New York City? Maybe Chicago and Dallas as well? I dunno. I'm sure it's more than that but the point is, most of us couldn't get it if we wanted it.
Motorola will always get better signal than HTC, at least for now. They have the best radios; everything else is a compromise. Motorola usually wins on battery life, too. I just think Motorola makes the best hardware. Best software, that's another story. Blur is a dog, but I'm no fan of Sense. I think Sense is great for iConverts who need hand holding in the big scary Android world, but for me, I just want AOSP with the Google apps and a few others and I'm good. I will say that the Sense clock is nice, though. They can keep their weird ring lock, though; the one in CM9 is better. Non-Motorola smartphones are to Motorola phones what Hackintoshes are to real Macs. A nice try but not quite the total package. IMO.

4G is Much faster, but I travel a lot and rarely am able to keep a 4G connection for more than 30 seconds or a minute or so. And more like 1G in my house, but I use 6M WiFi so OK. So, 4G for me is worthless.
But likewise, there is nothing in the custom 3G ROMs that excites me. I prefer stability over a few minor tweaks.

my gummy rom is super stable. i live in downtown seattle an my 3g barely loads facebook, but my 4g(when i sbf back to stock at random times) is blazing. faster than my home comcast. i might just flash this photon to boost so if im geting 3g only ill pay 50 instead of between 100-200 to sprint.
people say motorola has better radios but i dunno my gfs iphone 3g rules.

I just had to chime in. My wife had the evo 3d, ended up replacing it 6 times for different issues, she was finally available for her upgrade and she got the SGS3. She LOVES that phone. She is on it night and day. She said it is a night and day difference in how smooth everything is etc. Just my 2 cents, but the evo3d was a poorly executed phone. The hardware was great (with the exception of the 3d camera) but the software was JUST not there and too slow...

Yeah, I have to say the 3D was a super turd when it came to performance. Idk exactly what was causing it to be such a dog, unstable sense and firmware ota for my wifes, I definitely would have took my og evo over it any day of the week... And it wad dropped on toilet, spiderwebbed screen, half a flash, lol! It was a flash machine, roms for days, kernels, devs out the wazoo, just a great phone. Unlock this photon I have now, locked up like Fort Knox! And I need 4g so that the way it shall stay... #goodbyemoto #hellos3/evolte

Loved my Epic, But... My MoPho is amazing... Not to mention, I was getting harassed by my co-workers about my Samsung, due to the fact I work for Motorola Solutions...
been rockin' my MoPho for a couple days now.. battery life is STELLAR.. the screen is too bright sometimes.. not bright enough others..
it's stupid fast compared to the epic on EXT4.. but.. (to be fair) once the GS2 comes out, I might toss the Photon .. depends on how well i like the GS2.. lol

I'm really loving my Photon, and I really didn't have many complaints about my Epic. I really didn't use the keyboard at all. My battery life is far superior top the Epic, which I attribute to its stronger radio. I work on the service floor of a hospital and my Epic was constantly searching for signal in certain areas where I now maintain a solid signal throughout the day. My only complaint its that I daily experience the "silent call" issue. I read that removing the SIM card helps some folks, so I'm trying that.

I didn't come from an Epic but I did remove that sim card. Since then, haven't had NOT one issue.
I also upgraded from the Epic to the Photon, and I think the Photon is way better than the Epic..and faster. My Epic was getting laggy, and over heating whenever I was charging it. So far I am really enjoying the Photon.
Well to be honest with you I have become bored with the Photon and might go back to my Epic. The things I miss the most with my Epic is having to always keep a spare battery in my pocket, waiting for the phone to figure out where I am so I can check into Foursquare, the time spent searching and waiting for Gingerbread, and waiting for the camera to respond among other things. Without all of this, my life with my Photon seems so boring and I'm having trouble finding what to do with the extra time. It's been very hard to adjust to not having those features like I did on the Epic.

TBH I dont have that many issues on my Epic while on a stock-like ROM. Still waiting for official GB like everyone else though...
My mother needs a new phone so I am sending her my Epic while I upgrade...
One of the issues I have not yet seen info on (I'm still searching) is whether or not Motorola has decided to start following the microUSB standards yet or am I going to have to double up on 5 USB chargers that I keep anywhere I might need to use my phone...
Other than that most of the issues I have seen are pretty much software related and the phone looks great. I think I'm still going to go ahead with the Photon rather than the Evo3d.

Every phone will have a micro usb. Its been standardized now. No phone that comes out will use a different charger. This was passed awhile ago to cut down on the amount of charging cables and such in landfills among other reasons
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Aye, i know they have been standardizing them, but I know Moto was still being different. After talking it over with my Sprint guy today as I was ordering my phone.. I came to the conclusion that this was likely only an issue with the MINI-usb plugs. There were specific warnings on the websites I use to order my parts against mixing Moto and any other usb cables. As I understand it they had a couple wires reversed in those, and it seems they are getting with the program now and standardizing with the rest of the world.
In 2 days I will officially be a former Epic owner..
It would be today but they didnt know how to put the phone on my bill and have me walk out with one like they did with my Epic.
I had an Epic for a bit, but ended up going back to the Evo. I had better luck out of the Vibrant than the Epic. Photon is light years better though lol.

For me - I love the phone. Only thing I'd change would be placement of the USB port relative to the kickstand.
I've rooted it to remove bloatware, but don't know that there's anything that I want it do to that requires a custom ROM. Customizations, yes - but launchers, widgets and apps can do what I want.
I was in the same place with my EVO 3D. Stock was fine.
ROMs were necessary in the WinMo days (and perhaps the early Android days, though I missed those). I spent a LOT of time cooking kitchens for my WinMo phones.
There will always be people who like to cook ROMs as a hobby, but I knew that the Moto Photon would NOT be one of the target platform for them - will be mostly HTC phones, I imagine.
Well unlike my evo shift I'm happy with the phone the way it is. The evo shift was boring unless rooted and running a custom rom.
I love this phone and i'm satisfied with just root. Best phone I've ever owned. It just seems like there were a lot more people in this forum last month.

I also spent more time here and AC a month ago, but really don't have much more to say, or problems that need solved. I'm spending my time now customizing it and try out new apps.
Enjoy it!
Love this phone but its too complicated to unlock boot loader and such so people lost interest in the forums, not the phone in my opinion. I came from the Nexus S 4G and don't see a reason to lose 4g for a rom its great as it is running launcher pro. Just my 2 cents.

Photon was a great phone, its great with root alone. I now got the sgs2 and gave the MoPho to my gf. She loves it coming from an HTC Aria. I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader, I tried but it looked too risky. I was pretty much satisfied with stock and my own build prop tweaks, there was no need to unlock. I do recommend to phone to people who aren't as tech savvy for just being a good dependable fast phone.
The sgs2 is no way inferior to the photon, every day use they run about the same, the photon does have better battery life and video recording, the sgs2 has a bigger screen and an unlocked bootloader.

CPU is only one component in comparing phones, and IMHO not in the top 3 criteria. Screen, battery, radio signal, construction quality, vendor support all more important than minor (in the real world) CPU differences.
I won't get into any more bashing - will just say glad you like your phone; enjoy it!
I think my Photon is the best Android phone i've ever owned and I've had a few over the past couple of months, including the SGSII. The SGSII is a great phone but just too thin for me, so when on a flat surface my manley fingers couldn't quite grasp it right and i ended up dropping it. The Photon just feels perfect, build quality is great, just ticks all the boxes for me and I'm gonna stick with it for a while

Phone is great out of the box, not much to complain about on forums nor are people in a rush to slap a ROM on it like they would need to so their Samsung works correctly.
I came from the tmobile vibrant. At one point I had a choice of 65 custom roms and 11 kernels. I wanted unlimited data and more minutes and sprint was the only choice. I got the epic but took it back the day this phone dropped on the market. I like htc but 3d had some drawbacks. Mainly signal quality. I would like more roms, but mainly overclock kernels. I am learning to make my own themes and that will probably satisfy me. I hope development picks up, but if it doesn't I won't be upset. This is a wonderful phone and works right out of the box. I don't get 4g on my end of town and probably never will, and I could really care less.
It's good to see people are still here and they are satisfied with their phones. This is probably the best phone Sprint has to offer right now. It sucks that it was released sandwiched between the 3vo and sgsII.

Photon 4g Or Atrix 4g OR SGS II

some one will tell me that which is best please ... i like photon 4g is this phone good or just.....
Atrix isn't on Sprint that's AT&T, SGSII is good if you want a million roms, buncha dev support, and custom themes and all that stuff. But if you want a phone that is a phone, and works as such, with a couple really awesome Devs the Photon is the way to go.
What it comes down to is do you want a phone that is a phone and damn good at it or do you want a phone that is so so but you can tweak? I vote Photon myself. Just my two cents.
Yes, I also vote photon. I owned Atrix before going for photon. Photon is better than Atrix on radio & heat(never over 40 degree even playing games). Sgs II is so plasticity & don't like the graphic.

If you are simply using a phone. Just like web, gaming, watching movies go with photon. Other wise you r playing with different roms go sgs2 good luck

I own an Atrix and just got the Epic Touch 4g from Sprint yesterday, my buddy has a Photon I've rooted for him. Out of the 3 my Atrix seems the most trouble free (but its been out the longest) but if you're thinking about going to Sprint the Photon is the way to go, signal strength and battery life on the Photon has been amazing. My Epic Touch will probably go back to Sprint, Samsung just can't get it right.

This man has the best statement ive read in a long while! a former atrix user, now ET4G user, and he says to pick up a photon. id shake your hand all day, lol
I had some usage of friend's atrix and now I owned the photon. We both are not from USA, i cant say anything about the signal.
Atrix has a lot of fixes already and several good firmwares, not so much like photon, but some awesome developers are working here and make it much better. I would vote for buying photon, I have very good feelings about using it. Actually was iphone 4 user before, but if compare with atrix, I would suggest photon.

I would definitely get the photon, I have had it a month now and theres been 3 updates already. This is the best phone i've ever used, no need to put roms on it, it's great just like it is.
Motorola packs some good radios in their devices, his Photon will pickup a full 4g signal inside while the Samsung is still chasing it's tail looking for any signal at all. 3G on outlying areas acts the same, no service with Samsung and enough bars to browse the web on the Photon. I'm a smartphone junkie and I admit the Photon blows me away. The Samsung is faster and smoother but not by an insane amount.

Well, I can add this as someone who had an ET4G and took it back, the Photon is one rock solid device. I've been running it about a week and a half now and I'm totally satisfied w/ the situation.
As for games...Tegra Zone brother. Built for this processor specifically and some of the best games available. Shadowgun is looking promising, though I don't really game, so WTF would I know.
Also, the Photon should be able to readily handle any app coming out for at least a year I would imagine, so you're covered there.
And just in case someone on the fence reads this who *is* interested in ROMS, I can't say enough about the devs working on this device. They are few, but their persistence and dedication is top tier. On the bar shelves of life, they are beside the Johnny Walker Blue. Loki, mrine and shabby have done so much work and above that (in my opinion) are highly interactive with the users giving feedback/asking questions which makes me look foward to each new development even more. I learn something new, even if small, almost everyday that I check up on the forums. I love that. Plus I don't care for over animated, convaluted neon puke themed ROMs w/ illegible font and acore FCs shatting all over my communcations device. That's me. YMMV.

well, i'll give you this to ponder, was in the same boat as you, had my evo for a year, year and a half, photon came out, was the only phone that made me upgrade, if i didn't would still have my evo to this day
GSM
I gave my Evo to my daughter when upgrading to the Photon. Used it in the Dominican Republic last week with an Orange GSM card withdrawing no problems. Was nice to switch between networks without having to carry two phones. I also used Skype when on WiFi and the quality was excellent.
I miss being able to mod the phone like I could the Evo but there is a lot more activity on this forumn than a month ago. The Photon is a little better phone than the Evo in my opinion lighter and the screen a little better
Well you won't have a thousand ROM's to flash, but......are those thousand ROM's on the Evo REALLY any different? Or are they just slight differences on the same base?
I used to be addicted to flashing ROMs on my EVO too but honestly haven't missed doing that since I got my photon. The reason I flashed ROMs and kernels on my EVO was to make the battery (and overall performance) better. With this phone, that's not necessary since the battery is amazing!!
If you wanna change the look of your screens then there's always different launchers with themes to choose from.

+1 to this. Went from the WinMo HTC Diamond years ago, to the flagship Sprint Android Hero, to the EVO Shift to the MoPho (just got it yesterday). Becoming a Flashaholic was a way of life, and...as semi-exciting as it was anytime a new base or kernel would drop, flashing 1-2 ROMS a week or so became tedious and distracting.
I rooted the MoPho this morning simply to be able to access the build.prop so I could set the LCD Density where I wanted it (200), adjust the VM Heap (64m) and run a few scripts, along w/ convenience apps like reboot, screen off and button remapping. At this point, I'm more than happy to sit back and let the experienced devs do their thing as this phone comes into its own, and it just feels good to not HAVE to tweak the hell out of the phone just to get it to behave like a phone.
That's what I needed to hear...
A little positive reinforcement.
Thanks guys ...Nov.1st is my day..to get the photon.
But I'm keepeing my EVO .) To play with.

A few questions about sprint

So some of you might know me... Some may not but, I've been developing roms for Verizon's HTC phones for year's, and I think I might want to try a different carrier for awhile and sprint is at the top of my list... Don't get me wrong I love the user base from the Verizon peeps but it just keeps getting smaller and smaller... The last 2 devices I've had Incredible 2 and Rezound just seemed like they died before they got going by that I mean no support other than me and a couple other devs...
So what I'm asking is what are your thoughts about sprints service... And do you think the LTE should be my next device? I've played around with a lot of the new HTC phones and the LTE seems to be better than the other's, so it will most likely be my next phone, but I want to hear what you all think?

I love my LTE and have had Sprint service for nearly 15 years. No complaints here...Sure, the 3G speed isn't that great, but that should change with Network Vision project. I live in Baltimore so I get pretty decent speeds right now, but there are plenty of others that are not.
Customer Service: never had an issue with them
Dropped Calls/Missed Calls: not nearly as many as with AT&T and some others that my friends use. Seems pretty stable.
Data: 3G isn't great, but, it works and is unlimited.
Bills: Never had an issue with Billing
Hope that helps somewhat.
EDIT: I ran your NEWTS RC3 on the EVO 3D and loved it. Couldn't change ROMS after flashing yours because nothing came close...
You should definitely come over to the EVO 4G LTE forums and hook us up. LOL...
Do it newt. Data speeds are pretty decent in major cities, price is right and this phone is a beast. Two best parts: screen and audio quality. I came from the 3d and am glad I left the drama and subparness of that phone behind. Ran your sense 4.0 port at the end of my time with the 3d and loved it. Lets just hope sprint doesn't forget about this device like the 3d. Oh and there's no drama here like the 3d. Come join the party newt, we need more devs like you.
The phone is a beast, sprint is what it is
Would love to see u on this device

I've been with Sprint for 11yrs, it's been a rocky ride at times but they've improved substantially over the last several. I love my LTE but a friend of mine just got the GS3 and I was playing around with it and it's a really nice phone. That being said, the selfish part in me wants as many quality developers as possible committed to the LTE to try and bring development here to the level it was with the OG EVO. Since you're a developer and the phone will likely stay bone stock just long enough for you to root it, it really comes down to specs and personal preference as to design and build quality. LTE is a little lighter and seems a little thinner, GS3 seems a little more soldly built (even with it being all plastic). There's an issue of the LTE bending just above the kickstand due to the aluminum being so thin and weak in that area. IMO the LTE has a slightly better screen but the GS3 screen is still beautiful. GS3 has far more storage available to it and a removable battery. I've actually been thinking of switching to the GS3 just because all I really want is a fully working, solid, stable AOSP build and I have a feeling the GS3 is going to get there first.

I feel the same, my last 4 were Touch Diamond, OG EVO, 3D, and LTE. Honestly, I'd rather have you and as many other developers here as possible to help make this thing greater than it already is.

If your willing to take the sacrifice from insanely fast data to Sprints mediocre data until LTE really starts going, I think you'll see this as a nice upgrade from HTC's previous devices. The build quality is something I didn't expect, because its really that nice. The one thing that I still have yet to get over on this phone, is this beautiful screen.
If you decide to come to the EVO-side I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The EVO LTE is awesome compared to any other phone out there, period. Only draw back on the phone is not being able to take out the battery. Everything else on the EVO destroys the competition. (Well not destroy, just get the phone you won't be disappointed.) Sprints service is better than they get credit for I think. Though they need to work faster on 4G so we can stop getting charged for something we cannot use and so they can stop BSing that it is for data coverages. 3G speed is what you would expect really. Unlimited everything is a big plus. And their customer service is sub par but I think most carriers are.
From what I read here, your the man. Make it happen chief!
Would be good to have you here newt

Word... I WILL NOT buy a phone from another manufacturer. I feel that HTC's build quality is unmatched and honestly I love Sense with Nova instead of Rosie (i know that isn't a popular opinion).
Sprint has been good to me here in Charleston, Wv. I have the OG Evo, the Evo 3D, the HTC Flyer tablet and now the Evo 4G LTE... wouldn't trade this phone for anything currently on the market.
In this area on 3G I seem to average between 1500 and 1700 mbps and that is plenty for me as I am usually on Wifi... I honestly don't care much if 4G even comes to this area and of the handful of dropped calls I have ever had, I was talking to someone on AT&T so I tend to believe that it was on their end.
Sprint service is decent i have had worse t-mobile "cough" phones seen alot nicer on sprint if your an htc fan..excited to see you considering the lte
