Some facts:
My last rom on the phone was CM7
I can get into download mode but I cannot get into recovery
The drivers on my pc (windows 7 x64) are not installed correctly. I've tried the vibrant drivers and Nexus S drivers.
When I boot the phone on I just get the Vibrant/samsung Logo and it just stays there.
Since I can't get into my phone I cant turn on or disable USB Debugging.
I have SDK on my pc with the drivers in the google usb folder but they do not work.
How can I get my pc to recognize the device w/o being able to turn on USB debugging. I'm I stuck even though I can get into download mode?
just keep trying with download mode

I have the same problem. Now this is my first time with this phone as it is a friends. I installed TW bionic rom on her phone with no problem. Then tried the MIUI rom on the first page of the development section then the phone just bootlooped. So after pushing to many buttons in a very noobish move the phone just stays on the vibrant screen. So my question is where do I go from here? I will attempt to try you method to get the laptop to recognize the phone but maybe some links to help me out would be great.

id say miui's for more experienced users, it uses a different install meathod (same as cm7)
get odin and the pit and tar files (if you havent already)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
power off the phone
open odin
hold volume up and down
plug usb in
or
open odin
pull the phone battery
plug usb in
hold vol up and down
push battery back in (while holding vol buttons)
both of these ways should put you in download mode, if they dont straight away just keep trying and try different ports on your computer
Thanks for the link to that thread. I wasn't having much luck last night finding links that weren't broken. Downloading the rest of the files now so ill post back soon with results. Odin finally recognized the phone so I think this should go well. Not sure what I did wrong flashing MIUI, its not my first time running the rom just never used a vibrant before.

make sure factory reset isnt checked in odin, unless you want to wipe everything
always checked in mine for some reason, didnt notice last time and lost all my angry birds lol
Thank you very much for posting that link. It should honestly be stickied for all to find more easily since the one that is currently stickied has dead links. Everything worked, managed to reboot and reinstall team whiskey bionic rom then restore the last back up I made. If it wasn't for these forums I don't know where I would be.

So I've been happily flashing the JB files, and phone was doing great. Tonight I came across a couple of programs, Root Explorer and Root Toolkit. Put both on my phone, everything is still OK.
Looking through the Toolkit, I see that you can update fonts to the phone, so being that type of guy, I picked one and went to install it.
Big Mistake? The phone went to reboot, and is now stuck at a nice blue SAMSUNG logo, and won't do anything.
Of course, I hadn't done a back up, so thinking a way around the problem (I'm at work, not on my own PC), I redownloaded the last update (DLI8) with Odin. Ran Odin off a flash drive, then went to connect the phone (brick) to the PC. The PC's (tried on 3 of them) all say that the device connected is a GADGET SERIAL (?) and is not recognised by Odin.
So, I know that I will try when I get home in the morning. But am I missing something else, something that I have not tried? (except some brain cells!!!!) Is it because Odin can't be ran off a flash drive? Is the S3 well and truly dead? Should I smash it and claim on warranty?

erm did you put your phone in download mode by pressing Home + Volume Down + Power before using odin?
Whilst holding the power button, hold volume down button also. This puts phone in download mode. Odin will now recognize it, assuming you've got the drivers installed.
Read the sticky threads thoroughly and you'll solve this in no time.

Yes, in Download mode, PC's just sit there, so am thinking that because they are works ones (that I can't install drivers on) that I'll have to wait until I get home.:crying:
Fingers crossed
Managed to get the drivers installed on a work PC, running Odin, eventually connected to the phone, is currently saying 3minutes to finish. Blue bar is getting bigger. Hopefully by the time someone else reads this thread the problem will be solved.
Let this be a warning to all NOOBs (like me). BACKUP, BACKUP BACKUP
EDIT: IT WORKED. Now just to set it all up again how I like it......
Most work PC's are locked down so people can't install stuff on them that can cause the company problems.
Be VERY careful trying to do anything on a work PC as you may, inadvertantly, wind up with a brick.
Remember, just because its your work PC DOESN'T mean its YOUR PC....

Yes, I know. It was a contractor PC, so not connected to our network. So no harm done. Phone staerted up great, but after a reboot lost all contact details, am in the process of getting them all back with that software from Samsung called "Kies" which is not playing very well at the minute. We live and learn.
I killed my s3 too while playing pokemon. It just suddenly reboot and stuck in boot logo with some white distorted line. I panic and plug out the battery and tada, phone dead. Can't even go into download mode.

When I turned on my i9300 galaxy III phone last week it prompt me for an upgrade. I installed it and as soon as it booted again, every single app started to issue warnings about stopping. The phone cycles through all of these pop up warnings over and over again and never reaches the home screen.
What I have tried:
Plugged it to PC open Kies - drivers were not installed correctly, Kies didnt connect.
Ran troubleshooting (unplugged phone b4) connected phone again Kies didnt connect.
Restarted the phone in d/l mode --> wipe data/factory reset, this time the drivers were installed correctly but Kies didnt connect again.
Unplugged phone open Odin and it didnt recognize the phone either.
Tried 2 different cables switched USB ports and nothing!!
PC recognizes the phone but it wont let me see content in windows explorer.
Please help me, thanx in advance. :crying:

For ODIN to recognize the device you must first go into Download Mode and you need to shutdown the device first then do this hold home+vol down+then power button)
You don't need root to use ODIN though. If you want to revert to stock see the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610 it's pretty straightforward anyway so i guess you won't do something unnecessary.
As you were upgrading legitimately, take it back to vendor or Samsung and get them to sort it

Neither Kies nor Odin recognizes the phone. PC installs drivers correctly and knows when its plugged in but thats about it

Yea maybe phone has no chance at all and I probably need to replace it.
Hello,
I've read numerous times about people being able to restore their dead bricked phones. No button combination will get my LG Optimus L9 P769 (T-mobile) to turn on. I think bricked it while trying to complete a carrier unlock. I understand that I can try to restore my phone through either fastboot or kdz. For fastboot, I was able to install the omap driver, but you know how I'm supposed to install a second driver? Well, I can't seem to do that. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I would love an explanation of how to install the driver a second time. I know I'm doing something wrong, because when I use the fastboot script to flash the xloader and uboat, I just get "waiting for device." Also, if I want to flash a kdz, do I need fastboot drivers? I feel like my success depends on installing the fastboot drivers properly, but my computer and two others would not let me do that.
I'm really new to this stuff, so any help is appreciated! Also, please excuse me if I'm using the terminology incorrectly. Like I said, I'm new to all this.
Thank you in advance!
To install a kdz, you need to be in upgrade mode. Hold the volume up button then connect it to the computer.

Hello, I can't get into fastboot. It may be that the phone battery does not have a charge and so the fastboot script does not recognize it when I insert it into the phone after 4 seconds. Could that be a possibility? Because I tried everything, tried many different timings many times, to no avail!

I was just in the same boat as you and pretty much gave up hope but finally got fastboot working and flashed ics x and u and bam it worked like a charm on offline flash method. You just have to pit usb cable in phone w/o battery in and go to device manager. When you see it popup under other devices right click and press install driver. Make sure you have electronic signatures disabled or it will give a error and not install. This is what prevented me from getting it to work the first 100 times! Now run CMD. TYPE CD C:/FASTBOOT < OR C:/ W/E FOLDER NAME IT IS. THEN RUN START.BAT. < OR W/E THE .BAT FILE INSIDE YOUR FILE IS NAMED. Now press enter. It should prompt to plug in phone. I put my battery in as soon as plugged in and it worked. Now Choose option 5. Let it do its thing. Now go reinstall driver as done before to be safe. Then remove your battery. Hold volume + button and plug usb in. S/W upgrade mode should come up. Slide your battery in and proceed to the offline flash method to flash you kdz file. Should be alive again! Mine was tricky going into sw upgrade mode. Sometimes it came right up then sometimes it took 4 or 5 tries so dont give up! Goodluck and you can do it! I almost gave up I felt so hopeless about getting it to work then it finally worked like a charm!

The problem is, I can't install the driver in the second location because it doesn't come up in device manager.. I was thinking maybe there's a problem with the battery, like it doesn't have a charge or something. Because when I run fastboot it doesn't detect the battery no matter what timing I used. I tried everything. If I use the old fastboot script and I get to "fastboot? y or N" and I enter y, it keeps asking the same question.

Could be a problem with the battery? I'm going to get an external battery charger and try charging the battery.

It died after I plugged it into the computer. I never rooted it and has the stock software. Before dying I also carrier-unlocked it using a cheap code from ebay.
