Finally Found my CM9 Wifi Fix - TouchPad General

Hey all,
I have spent the past 4 weeks frustrated by the constant dropping of wifi connections over and over and over since upgrading CM7 to the latest CM9 nightly .... Anyways, I accidentally walked into a fix for my issue. I haven't seen this in any of the forums or suggestions so I came and created an account just to post this fix.
So all I did was disable the WMM Mode option in my wireless router and now wifi is not dropping at all and is flying speedwise!!
I have a Belkin wireless router and all is now well with WPA2. I have no clue if this will help anyone with another manufacturer.
Google says: What is WMM Mode belkin?
A feature called Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) is present in the router, which allows for media files to be given precedence over the wireless network.
Anyways, hopefully some poor soul as desperate I was will see this and it will help them too.

I just got CM9 and haven't had the chance for wifi to drop on me yet, but when it does I will surely try your suggestion. Thanks!

Yeah,... no.. Disabling WMM didn't work for me.
In fact, it managed to completely knock off my laptop from my LAN. And the only way I was able to connect to my LAN was through my Extended LAN. Weird.. I know.. I don't understand it..
But on the flip side, I was only wanting to test out this WMM method to see what happens.
I wasn't having any connection issues as far as getting on the internet.
The issue I was/am having is accessing the Internet via my LAN with Wireless N Only.
Currently I can connect with Wireless N.. However with that setting.. accessing Youtube video streaming is very slow (Turtles Crawl) to load (Which is a major deal for me).
Also Connecting my HP TP to the LAN with that setting is HIT or MISS, Mostly Miss. When trying to connect to my LAN the HP TP will not respond to the request to connect and simply do nothing.
So to correct that I have to bump down my LAN to Wireless G Only. With Wireless G Youtube streaming is normal with almost no delay what so ever.
With this WMM method I was hoping it would fix Wireless N/YouTube Streaming issue I currently have with my HP TP.
But.. Alas Horatio.. I didn't know him well!... hehe...

WMM/802.11e is REQUIRED by the 802.11n standard—so disabling this should break 11n and, as such, should not be done if you use 11n.

I was using an app called wifi fixer to keep a connection. That was after trying everyone of the router tweaks people suggested. It worked fine for months on the Alpha 2 (without needing an app or router tweak), then when I started using the nightlies it started dropping. Whatever version I am on now is solid, and has no issues. I am afraid to try a newer nightly in case it breaks again.
Sent from my Galaxy S II

I did not have any WIFI issue with CM9 so far, perhaps the new nightly fixed the issue. I had problem with Wifi on WebOS where the connection would drop randomly. At first, I thought it was TP but later found a fix for DIR-655 router, since then, no problem whatsoever.

all these problems can be fixed by modifying your wpa_supplicant.conf file also, learn about this as well

hello
i was so looking forward to getting my new x10 mini pro only to find a few faults some of which i can live with until 2.1 comes out (should really be 2.2 & sooner) but i cannt seem to connect to my wireless router.
i have tried several different methods, including going through all the wireless channels on the router, enable mac address filter and have only my x10 set, try all the differents security settings - but still i cannot get my phone to obtain an ip address before it gives me the unsuccessful message.
so went to mcdonalds tried their openzone and connected fine to their network.
now my next guess would be is my router is old (about 4 years maybe more) linksys WRT54GS so anyone know of any problems with specific routers at all?
i know i had problems setting up my godsons ipod touch with my router, but didnt dig any deeper on it as he wasnt fussed about it at the time - so think it could be that but will hold off rushing out to get a new router for a while yet, probably to test some other peoples routers first.
Is you SSID hidden?
I have found that on some routers, Android phones in general won't connect if the SSID is hidden.

The WRT54GS should be a perfect router to use.
Make sure you are running latest dd-wrt firmware on it, setup wifi security as : WPA2 Personal Mixed, TKIP+AES
I have these settings and phone connects easily.
Its a good router, do as above poster advised and definitely get latest firmware on. Try going on just G mode if there's no B-only old wifi gadgets in your house.

I noticed my wife's X10 mini won't connect to Channels 12 and 13. If your router is on one of those channels, try moving it to 11.
I have difficulties connecting to my wifi router at home, SMC Barricade N2, WPA2 authentication, it works only after resetting the router.
Now after turning off TKIP cypher suite (only AES), it works perfectly
update: and also helped to enable static IP... but I am using wifi only @home
Had the same problem. Changed to Channels 11 and detected imediatly my wifi network.
Hi, I have a different problem with the wifi.
At work and some other connections I've seen to have an open wifi, which i can freely connect.
However, I am still unable to browse the internet as it requires some browser authentication.
I've seen other fones (Nokia and Iphone) have their browsers popup a webpage to input the credentials.
but my mini pro doesn't display this page.
i've already tried going directly to the login url manually but still doesn't display the login page.
someone told me that this might be a limitation of android but haven't seen any reports about it...
i also saw and tried 2 apps (Open Wifi Login and Browser Wifi Login) that should have solved this but did not.
Has anyone else had this experience?
Help please....
shameless self-bump
other fones seem to have the same issue but no solution...

[Q] Can't Connect to WiFi

Hi just received my GTablet and have installed ClockworkMod v08. Next, I am attempting to install the TNT Lite Rom but I am having trouble connecting to my home router.
The response I keep getting when trying to connect is to the point of "Obtaining IP address.." then it disconnects. I am sure it's not the wireless router but just to be eliminate possibilities, I've even switched off all the security with connect to the router, but the sames results. It keeps trying to re-connect. I can easily connect with my other PCs and printers.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Hello there,
did you ever solve your wifi problem, I am currently running the latest TnTlite, and this just started happening to me as well. It just hangs in Obtaining Ip then it disconnects.... I have never had this problem before in fact was online on the tab last night, now it seems i cannot connect... I will see if I can connect in another location hope nothing happened to the Tab..... BTW I tried restarting as what was suggested but that did nothing for me also....
Are you broadcasting your SSID?
Can you take the tablet somewhere else and try connecting at a Star Bucks, or a library, or something. See if it connects ok there?
Also, if it doesn't connect anywhere. Try flashing a different ROM to see if it is just that one.
I've had the same problem. I do not seem to be able to connect to any wifi that is encrypted with WPA. At work, we are WPA and I cannot connect at all. At home, I have WEP and can connect. I thought it might be something with the wifi settings on the tab, and have searched and searched and cannot find anthing.
By the way, this is my third tab and none of them could connect to a WPA encrypted router. The first two I returned as defective. IF there is an answer, I would love to hear about it.
Also, this is my first android device. I have been messing with Windows phones for a long time...thanks to the great people on this site.
Sorry to hear about your wifi problems. Just to let you know my experiences, I've (in the week I've owned my tablet) run TnT, VegaN and cyanogen (latest of each) and have never had a problem connecting to my home wifi - I do not broadcast my SSID at all and use WPA2/PSK encryption. You both mention WPA - can either of you try WPA2/PSK?
But on saying all of that, if you can't even connect to your wifi point without any security involved, it sounds either:
1) Hardware - faulty tablet but you said you're on your third so that sounds unlikely. Remember, while the tablet supports wifi G/N it does so over 2.4Ghz so if you have a router that only does 5Ghz or is set to work exclusively over 5Ghz, your router will not see your tablet
2) Software related - Have you reflashed your kernel at all? Did you possibly install a kernel (not rom) that does not have wifi drivers installed or something similar?
I hope something above might help you....
I was never able to connect to the wireless router. I shut all the security off, reset the router, rebooted the tablet but still the same results, "obtaining IP address" then it fails and tries again. I could connect to my neighbors Linksys so I know the tablet wifi is ok. I also so know that the router was ok since it had been serving my other PCs & printers for a number of years. It just wouldn't connect to each other.
The problem still persists.

You didn't answer in your response above, is your router a 5Ghz router or 2.4Ghz? Could the frequency of your router be causing your problem here? Remember the tab only supports 2.4Ghz frequencies
1. if your tablet can connect to your neighbor's router, then problem lies between your router and the tablet.
2. is your router a linksys? what wireless router are you trying to use?
3. are you using mac address filtering? is dchp enabled on the router or by some sort of home server?
4. your tablet can see your router, but for some reaon they cant agree on how to talk to each other. i'm on a linksys wrt54gsv4 and havent had a problem, not with default settings or wpa2 or mac filtering or the custom firmware i eventually installed on it (ddwrt), tomato)

You are ATTEMPTING to install TnT ROM? You dont need the Internet connection, just sideload it then install. Am i Right?
Then after you install the TnT rom, sideload also the Kernel TnT base with wifi fix.

Hope this will solve your problem.
Good luck

I have an older Microsoft 2.4Ghz B/G wireless Router. I'll try to sideload the Kernel TNT base with the WiFi fix.
Thanks for the tips.
Since the original posting I have got TNT Lite installed (using my neighbors router)

Something else occurs to me out of pure ignorance. I'm not sure how Android stores profile information. But I know with both mac and windows I've had occasion where "forgetting" the network and letting the device rediscover it has solved problems.
It sounds like you've been down that road already. However, it does bear asking. It's the more obvious things we often forget to consider.
Well it looked like the tablet needed to be reset a couple of times as i was just online with it... now the tab just froze, shut off and now i cannot turn it on... off to another thread to see what to do now... god i hope this thing is not bricked....any suggestions on what is a good thread would be appreciated... off i go.......
edit: found a thread now to find the internal reset button. thanks to all at xda....

Try to hold the power button for a long time and maybe it may turn back on. Before doing your last resort (disecting the tablet).
I had a problem with my wifi going into loops when I first got the unit. It would show it connecting/disconnecting/connecting/etc as described in the first post.
I had another router (both the same makes - Linksys WRT54G but different model numbers) so I tested the other router and I connected fine. I haven't gone back to test the first router yet and I am using the 2nd one.
The router I couldn't connect to has DD-WRT micro on it, and I haven't had problems connecting other wireless devices to. The one that is working fine with the g-tablet now has Tomato on it (it is a lower version number which supported Tomato).
Too bizarre... I now have this problem.
I received my gtablet today and installed clockwork mod recovery and vegan-tab ginger RC 1. Or, essentially, I followed the instructions here and got everything working. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
Wifi worked fine until the evening. Wifi is on, and in the settings under the SSID of my wifi network, it says Obtaining IP address for a minute until it says Disabled, network in range. I've done some common trouble shooting, like restarting, turning wifi off and on, forgetting the network and reentering password. That didn't work. My cell phone has a mobile hotspot feature and the gtablet CAN join that. I wonder what gives... I hope someone can help.
(This could be just coincidence, but it's about when I powered up my desktop computer. The desktop connects to the internet through a DMZ router that has a wired connection to the wifi router in another room. The desktop is now off and the gtablet still has this problem.)
Ok. Resetting my router fixed it. I never thought that my router could just "dislike" one particular device. I thought for sure something had to be wrong with the device. Forgive my ignorance!
G Tablet Wifi
I do not transmit my SSID and this has never been a problem with any of our laptops or netbooks. When I first received my G Tab and tried to connect to my network, even though I had entered the SSID and Passphrase correctly, it still would not connect. As soon as I set my wireless router to transmit the SSID the G Tab connected without any problems.
This is the first time I've encountered a problem of this nature. Comments?
This is what worked for me. I posted this in a similar thread as well.
Hey, I had WiFi connection issues too. I just got a Viewsonic G-Tablet with the Android 3.0 OS and have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router. It could see router and would try to connect, but would cycle and never connect. I could try to connect to other available networks in the area. It connected fine to an unsecure network, and when I tired to connect to secure networks there was a place where I could enter a network key/password. However, I noticed this option was not available on my network when I tried to connect. I reset my router which did not help. I then chose the option to add a network on the tab. This worked!! I was able to enter the key from the add a network option. I then told the "bad" connection to be forgotten. Hope this helps someone else, as I had looked on the internet for awhile for an answer. I was about to buy a new wireless router too!! Oh, I am using WEP too.
edit: ok when I power my tablet back on the same issue was happening. This time I could enter a network and the cycling still contiuned. I even forgot and re-entered the network. The fix this time was to reboot the tab. However, my internet has been acting up lately so IDK.

[Q] Optimus one Wifi issues - please advise

Hi guys, so here's the deal : Just got a brand new Optimus One and the Wifi dosen't really work. It took me ages to get it to detect my home network ( Realtek RTL8187, used as a hotspot via win7's wireless miniport adapter - so basically virtual hotspot) Once I managed to get a connection the device would either be stuck at "obtaining ip adress from..." or would simply disconnect and reconnect in a quick burst. I finally managed to get it to connect by manually assigning the internet sharing permissions for the virtual miniport, but the speed is abysmal! We're talking to the order of bytes/s, measured both by attempting a small download from the phone and by reading the in/out data on the pc connection info. Upon some further poking around, a few wifi adapter and phone restarts later, I notice that when I connect to my hotspot the phone's wifi manager reports a normal speed of 54mb/s, but when I actually try to use the connection (say, the youtube app) it works fine for a second or two (it usually loads a bit of a vid, or half of a big webpage) and then drops down to the aforementioned speed and the phone's wifi manager indicated that the connection is 2mb/s
Also, I went out before setting up my home network to a mall and tried to connect to one of the free hotspots available. On some, it would connect straight away, but be very slow (signal wasn't great) and on one (max signal) it would disconnect/reconnect in very short bursts (10-15 times a minute) and it would eventually establish the connection. Then the same speed issue as above: works fine for a few seconds, drops down to unusable. Didn't think about checking the connection speed there, simply thought the public network was overused. In hindsight, the problems were similar to the ones experienced at home
A few side notes: The 3g speed is fine, consistent and problem-free
I have tried changing my home wifi's frequency to a number of settings (there are quite a few other wifi's around, I know it could cause issues if they overlap)
My wifi connection was actually not detected by a friend's laptop wifi, but we could connect our computers just fine via ad-hoc (which from what I've heard is a no-go with android at the moment - and the phone does not see ad-hoc)
The phone is brand new, only installed a handfull of apps on it, didn't change any relevant settings (I think)
Set wifi sleep policy to "never"
My pc wireless adapter worked just fine in the past, used it for a few months as the main internet connection, and even with half-signal it would achieve good speed. I also moved the antenna away from the PC itself to avoid interference
I set my PC to use only 802.11b since I've read around that some phones prefer this to 802.11b/g
That's about all I can think of right now. (oh, and It's my first android, so I don't know my way around the OS that great yet)
I appreciate any advice you can give me. Basically I'm trying to find out if it's an issue with my Wifi adapter, it's settings, the phone's settings, or if the phone itself might be broken, so I can send it back to warranty.
Thanks in advance.
Try switching from b to g.
it was initially on b/g

Nook tablet WIFI issus

Sometimes when I wake my nook from sleep it wont connect to my wifi.
When i go to my Wireless settings, it shows that my WIFI is On but it it does not detect any networks(there are over 10 wifi networks in range (apt building)).
I go to turn wifi off and it grays out and I get a message that says "Unable to stop Wifi".
The tablet locks up and reboots. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have seen this once or twice. A router reboot can help a little, but it hasn't been enough of a problem for.me that I've tried to do anything else. All of my Android devices have had problems with my router now and again.
I dont think its my router. Ive got 3 Android phones, A kindle fire, 1 Asus Transformer, multiple laptops, Xbox 360's, wii and multiple IOS devices hooked up to my network and none of them have complained about my wifi being busted. The nook tablet is the only one doing this. My first nook tablet did do this at all. I am wondering if this one has a defective WIFI chip
Yes, I have this same problem on my home wifi.
But in my office, everything is ok.
I have had the same issue. I just reboot the NT. It happened this morning, it was charging overnight with the low battery warning comming on last night before charging. Perhaps that may have something to do with it. I'll try to see if it's on it's charger next time it happens.
I had issues with mine doing that somewhat often. It would even happen during use. I was non rooted with a couple of sideloaded apps. Finally I got fed up and took it in. They swapped me out for a new one and I've had zero issues since.
I was lucky in that both me and my wife got these and I had a point of reference. Her tablet had no wifi issues while mine did. That was what led me to believe there was a problem with mine.
If you keep having the issue, you might want to think of getting it replaced.
WiFi problems only on one router.. Connected - No internet.
The WiFi on my Rooted Nook tablet works great at home, at in-law's, at parents, at neighbors houses. But at church it would find the signal and accept the password then said - "Connected - But no internet". It had full bars. The IP address was some generic number with mostly zero's. I had access to two different iPhones at the time and they both worked and connected to the internet with appropriate sequential IP addresses. I rebooted the D-Link router and my Nook Tablet with the same results. Any Ideas??

Me thinks that your deity doesn't like the idea of you rooting B&N's device.
What are the IP addresses of the other devices, the NT doesn't like nonstandard network protocols.
NT reboot required to get WiFi working
I purchased two Nook Tablets for my kids. Both are rooted using Snowball-mod. Both typically work well, but then refuse to connect to my home wireless network after some time. I have several other laptops and PCs connected to the same WiFi network with no issues. Only the Nook Tablets are unable to connect (after several hours of use). Rebooting the Nook Tablet always solves the problem... until it happens again. I have not found a patter to this yet (i.e. what might be triggering the WiFi to stop operation). If anyone find a solution to this issue, I would love to know what is found.
Several of us have found WiFi will lock out when the device is in sleep mode. Killing WiFi prior to sleep seems to stop this mysterious behavior, for me anyway.
Swyped from my rooted BNTV250 using Tapatalk
Is it known whether a un-modified ("stock" B&N NT) also requires WiFi to be disabled before entering sleep mode? If this is not an issue with an un-modified Nook Tablet, then perhaps this issue can be corrected soon.
Hi all,
The NT does not support Channels above 11 on WiFI networks...so if you router is on Auto-mode, it might choose a channel higher than that...and puff...no net...
Also, I had a Netgear Router which had some WPA2 incompatiblities with my both my Blackberry and my NT. Flashing the Router's firmware, also solved my problem.
Hope my experience is helpful.....
Cheers,
Gizmo
Gizmo, thanks for the suggestions but I do not think this is a router channel issue. What is happening is that the NT WiFi seems to lock-up (possibly driver issue). Bringing up Settings and tapping to turn off WiFi results in a grayed-out WiFi toggle (not "Off" but inactive). Attempting to touch WiFi again after this produces a message similar to "WiFi is not responding" (I don't remember the exact message now). My routers are set with fixed channels 1 and 6 as well.
Hi, I'm sorry, but I'm having trouble getting WIFI to work on my NT. The thing is: it only works disabling the password on my home network! But I want to maintain a secure connection... Can someone helpe me? Thanks in advance!
waking the wifi
Don't know if I'm late or not, but I actually found a resolution to this issue by downloading an app from the Google Play store called Wifi Manager. It's free and as soon as you launch it, it'll instantly re-wake and reconnect your wifi within less than 1 second. It's not intended for that use but it helps big time!

Help with this very frustrating wifi problem on my Tablet S!

Hi,
I got a new Sony Tablet S a few weeks back and I have this really weird problem.
As soon as I on Wifi and connect to my college network, it connects fine and webpages open as expected.
But after a minute or so, all data transfer stops even though I am connected to the network. Initially I thought
it was a hardware issue with my tablet but when I went to my nearest McDonalds and connected to their connection, everything
worked fine and there was no interruption in the data transfer.
I tried a couple of other hotspots around town and they seemed to work fine.
So, now obviously its a problem with my college network. The funny thing is that my laptop, my cellphone and about a thousand other devices
connected to the same network work just fine and do not stop exchanging data all of a sudden.
I have tried various apps available on the Play store but none helped.
My (geeky) friend told me that the issue may be some sort of interference between the routers (Cisco Aironet series, I think), as every floor in my hostel has 4 routers, but he could not give a solution. I have also referred the problem to my system administrator but he too could not come up with a solution.
If anyone has a solution to this, please help!
Thanks in advance
Really strange.
I have a rule that occasionally works, strange probelms can be sorted out by a restart, if not, a reset mostly helps.
Can I suggest resetting your tab if not done yet!
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA
Did both. Doesn't help.
you need to re-flash the wifi modules, which comes with the kernel usually. But I dont think that possible at the moment.
Can you elaborate?
I have the same problem with my tablet, and when I called Sony for technical support, they said that the tablet is not compatible with the router I have. Which in my honest opinion dont think is the problem.
But as a way around, what I do is turn off the wifi for few seconds and then turn it back on.
This way the problem gets resolved.
I hope it helps you.
I have exactly the same problem, unfortunately the problem is with the wifi in my home, my sony tablet connect and disconnects, or it stop transmitting after a while, but other devices (my htc phone, my tablet, ipad, iphone) doesn't have this problem.
and as you said, when I go to other places the tablet works fine.
Someone said me that the tablet is not compatible with the motorola router of my ISP
I've been searching but there is no solution, by now I turn off and turn on the wifi every time I lost internet
Thanks people, but this is hardly a solution. It means I need to turn on and turn off the wifi every 60 seconds to browse the internet. Bye bye downloads, buffering videos and installing apps through the play store
Is the Sony Tablet S the only tablet in the world that is incompatible with routers? Then Sony should make sure that its clearly listed on their website that routers from major companies are not compatible with our Tablet
I solved the problem .. at last for me,
1 - turn off wifi.
2- in accounts - turn off "auto connect"
3- turn on wifi ( test if work )
4- reconect the accounts
too simple .. but works , try it..
I am sorry but its not working (that is if by auto connect, you meant auto sync)
Are you sure you are telling the solution to the problem I mentioned or something else?
Hi, I was suffering exactly the same problem and it boiled down that was a compatibility issue with the router. Unfortunately I could not find any other solution but replace the router itself!
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using XDA
Looks like I have to do the same. except I cant make my institute change their routers
What kind of encryption are you using on your router? Try disabling the encryption and see if the problem persists.
Also, what channel are you broadcasting on? It could be a highly populated channel, try changing that if you can.
I don't know what options are available through your routers configuration page.
I will enqure with my system admin and get back.
Meanwhile, I got a workaround to this problem. There is a freeware called MyPublicWifi which creates a virtual hotspot on my computer. This hotspot works fine and I can share my router's internet through this, even though it means I need to keep my PC on while browsing on my tablet.
I have experienced exactly the same problem since I bought the tablet. The router I have at home is a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2. After a very long time trial-and-error, I have found a solution to it.
(1) Router setting: Force to set the 300Mbps mode of Buffalo router to 20MHz, not auto nor 40MHz. Some routers may display 150Mbps mode.
(2) Tablet setting: Settings->Wifi->advanced->Wi-fi disconnect policy, set to "Never"
You may try it and I think this will resolve the wifi disconnection problem. As for the reason, I think it is related to 11n because I have not found any problem with 11a/b/g router yet.
Hope this helps!!
