You can prevent apps from updating by changing the settings in playstore to update over wi-fi only and turn automatic sync off in your phone(if you don't need that). You can also set limit for data plan using onavo count.
This thread is not needed, as you have another one open here dealing with basically the same thing. Please post in that one with any further questions.

I have a HTC Fuze. The last few ROMS that i have been using (Energy, RRE, Tael), all the Apps always use the 3G internet to do their work even if a much faster Wifi is connected. Is there any way to make all apps(including things like email) globally prefer the Wifi when available? Also I dont want to have to keep changing settings to do this, It simply needs to be "If Wifi available use it, else use 3G"
Thanks in advance.
What i did was to go to start>settings>connections>advanced>select networks and change the default connection to the internet to "My work network", rather than my 3G network. This way, if theres any connection to the internet needed, my phone will use my wifi connection. The problem with this, however, is that when you dont have a wifi connection available, the phone will not connect to the internet unless you change the above setting back to your 3G network. If anyone knows a better way, please let us know
no i cant keep switching. thats too much trouble. there must be a better way.

Does it automatically connect to WiFi when a known network is within range even when the phone is in sleep? If yes, does it disconnect once not in use for a while?

As far as I know there is no way to do it automatically. You can use one or the other but they must be switched manually. All HTC phones have always worked this way. Maybe if the demand was high enough which apparently it is not a Chef could come up with an app that would do it. But for now you must do it manually.

that is extremely failurous. not preferring the fastest internet connection is major fail. did not know that.
My phone does this automatically. It uses the WiFi whenever it's on. If the WiFi is off, it uses the data connection.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong?

what the heck? how? u must help me find out..
i think it does prefer wifi over 3g in WM 6.5...!!
to check it out here is wt i've done....turn data connection off...check that its on in the notification manager "when u click on the task bar"..then run any app that needs internet " opera, msn messenger, email...etc" while this app is online..
now there r two ways to check it
1-the notification manager & see if it turned to 3g data connection...if so u should find a timer running in ur service provider section, if not then its only using wifi
2-check the communication manager & see if it turned the data connection on, if its off then its using wifi...
thats how it is with my touch pro...i'm using energy rom nov. 08 build
Indeed it prefers wifi connections 2 data, but You have to :
1. Have Known wifi spots in range
2. Keep wifi connection on, while in stand by
Keep in mind that if a program starts to use the data connection it wont change to use the wifi one. So firstly connect and then open programs.

apparently its some sort of combo of this. i am using 6.5. any apps that have been using 3g continue with it. and i have to go to the comm screen and turn off data to force new apps to consume wifi. which isnt too bad, certainly not as bad as going to the network options. i would wish they made this a bit more seamless like with the desktop technology, i can switch from wired to wireless lan without even dropping a skype call.

now i have discovered a new problem. even if i open the app after i have wifi turned on and data turned off, some apps just dont want to use the wifii.
Bing maps and google maps for example just tell me there is no internet.
this is really pissing me off, whats the point of having wifi on a phone if the apps wont use it. i dont really care about the google location service if the data is through the internet, but atleast turn on.
lame.
Hi All,
It's been awhile that I not using an android device ( the last one was milestone then I switch to iPhone, a stupid decision ).
In the past, i used to tether using some third party apps like pda-net to share the 3G network to my laptop for internet access. While I notice the latest android have this function built-in, which I successfully did it as well, I am unable to use my phone to receive any data while tether. All apps I tried to open that require data access will tell me no 3G data detected ( like Whatsapp / Doplin HD / some forums tools.. etc etc ).
My question is , is it normal for the stock rom ( I didnt root it ), or it is just my device having some problem? Thanks for reading and hope I can get an answer to solve this annoying problem.

Thanks so much for the quick reply!
I have tested the same scenario with my friend's Nexus One but do not have this problem occurred, so I bet this might be some other possibilities. But still, thanks so much for the help
Hi
Whenever the phone has access to the internet, it is using the net for all kind of traffic, even if auto sync and backgroung data are disabled.
Is there any way to control the data of the phone, so only foregroung processes has access to the internet?
The problem is when traveling to another country where the data price is very high, and you just want to send a small email, without all the other processes are using the internet.
I have not rooted my phone.

Hi all,
Is it possible that my WIFI usage somehow faultily gets counted as data usage(3G), in any android device, particularly in Galaxy S2 I900?
I know it sounds silly, but here's what happened:
I just got 3G activated yesterday.
Through WIFI i downloaded about 600+ MB of data (Sygic)
Through 3G I browsed 2-3 small YouTube videos.
Today when i contacted my carrier (Vodafone India), They say my data usage is about 700 MB in last 2 days. That looks like my WIFI + 3G usage.
Hence this doubt.
Does anyone know of anything like this happening before?
Also, is there any way I can analyze my data usage for the past 3 days?
Now I have learnt my lesson and installed MyDataManager from android market, but it can only analyze data usage from the day of it's installation. Is there any other way I can analyze previous data usage?
PS: I swear I did the download through WIFI. I could see the WIFI signal strength indicator in my status bar. Neither the e(edge) nor the H(hsdpa) was seen.
Please help.
Thanks.
Network cannot charge for data downloaded over WiFi they do not know what WiFi you used . WiFi and network data re separate components .
You made a mistake and did not use WiFi but mobile data .
WiFi signal on and Data in use .

Sorry, im pretty sure i used WIFI.
That's the reason im asking, is it possible that due to some fault in the device, it will somehow log the data downloaded through WIFI as 3G data, because unless there is some fault at the device's end, the network couldn't even know of our WIFI usage.
Also would it be possible that the device does an auto switch from WIFI to carrier data (due to any reason like weak WIFI signal strength) and fails to reflet this on the notification bar(still shows as WIFI on the bar)?
Has anything like this happened to anyone? I just want to cross check before I contact my carrier further. Anyways once i get my connection logs from carrier, it should show the server from which data was downloaded and that should make it clear.
>> WIFI signal on and data in use.
Is this possible? Doesn't the device switch to WIFI whenever its on? I thought WIFI takes priority over data by default
Pretty sure yep thousands if not millions say that when they get a big bill from the network . Network measures data at source and charges they dont get the data from your phone and charge you .

Is it possible that the phone shows as WIFI on the notification bar while it is actually using carrier data?
I don't have any issues paying the bill if i have done the usage. I just want to analyze what happened here so that it won't repeat again.
I am pretty sure the notification bar had only the WIFI symbol and not the data indicator. since i had 3G activated recently, i was very conscious about it and watching it quite frequently.
Also previously i had similar over billing issues with my carrier and they promptly gave a reimbursement upon thorough analysis of the situation. so carrier mistakes isn't also something unusual.
I don't know how old your signature is but if you are running ICS rom then you can use built-in data usage monitor (in settings) to verify the volume of data used.
Installed Data usage monitor

The signature is update to date mate.
I don't have a build in data usage monitor, but I have installed one from the market - My Data Manager

After much analysis and discussions with the carrier, I have finally found out the issue.
As pointed out by jje, the usage has actually happened at my end.
The WIFI had become unavailable many times in between the download, and the download had switched to carrier data.
To avoid any such occurrences again, and to help people manage their data usage better, I have compiled a simple list of best practices here:

Thanks mate... I have tried 3G watch dog and many more apps.
I find My Data Manager more likable.
It's simple, free and has all the same functionality - it notifies when ur usage is reaching threshold.
One good thing about it is that it stays cleanly in the notification area. When you pull down your notification bar, you can see it there, it shows 2 horizontal progress bars indicating 3G usage and WIFI usage each. It also shows number of days left in your bill cycle.
Pretty handy
Dear all,
How to with one switch allow that only one application use internet over carrier (data usage) in roaming on non rooted phone, and when i am not in roaming to allow synchronization to rest of applications?
For this problem i see two solutions firewall and synchronization profiles.
Firewals:
I know for this is necessary to have firewall and rooted phone, for Mobiwol firewall which not require root i am not sure that Mobiwol control data usage in roaming internet access and also does have automatic/manual switching profiles when iam in roaming or not.
Synchronization profiles:
For this solution iam not sure it will work because its not clear for me how its work. Does switching of synchronization means that this application will not access internet or also it necessary to switch off background data usage?
Does all application accessing internet going through synchronization menu and can be controlled in this menu?
Does any body know any application with synchronization profiles, its little bit boring to all the time switch on/off application when you in roaming or not?
Waiting your comments, advises...
Thanks and best regards,
Alek
